I end up spending a fortune here every visit. First off, they claim their "wellness exam" is not covered by insurance because it's all new high-tech testing that only they offer. It's a $30+ charge for that, if you want it. I described this and all the testing to my sister and family who go to different eye doctors and they all basically laughed saying that those tests are all normal eye tests that they do at their doctor visits and are covered by insurance. So I was ripped off there. They charged a "lense tutorial fee" just to teach me how to put in and take out contact lenses, my first visit getting contacts. Yes, this was an extra charge to show me how to use them. Once again, family members that all use contacts said they were never charged a fee to be taught how to use the contacts. It was basically just some lady sitting and staring at me anyway, watching me struggle the first few times then said oh you got it, ok bye. Ridiculous that now I've been charged TWO fees that would be covered anywhere else. Then you get walked out to "pick out your glasses". You CAN say no, you don't want to get glasses there, but I can't stand that they basically make you feel you need to buy them there. Some people getting glasses for the first time may not know better. And of course the glasses there are more expensive than Visionworks, etc. So once again, getting their patients to spend more money there instead of giving them options. My contacts were also much more expensive than needed. I was dumb and got my contacts there as I was on a time crunch at the time and wanted them before vacation. So they promised they'd be there in 2 days and I can come get them. When it came time to get more contacts, I priced our 1-800-Contacts who would mail me my contacts so I don't have to go pick them up, and they were $30 cheaper PER BOX. This place is a ripoff. They should be ashamed. Go to a normal eye doctor- one that doesn't try to upsell a basic eye appointment with "special tests" and "lense tutorial" fees.

Also, you cannot email a payment so, a la 1985, have to give over the phone or drive there. They also have a wide variety of glasses and sunglasses in the store as well! Ranging from designer to cheaper options. The last time I went, they made sure I knew exactly what I was going to have to pay after insurance whenever I go and pick up my contacts. I was glad to not have any surprises! They also typically have my prescription in trials which they always offer while I wait for the new prescription to come in. The extra fees at Visionworks are beyond ridiculous…read more First, I was charged an additional fee simply for using a credit card to pay for my eye exam. Visionworks is a huge company, so charging patients extra just for using a credit card feels unnecessary and frustrating. Second, I was told there is a $50 charge for the Optomap, and it felt like patients using insurance are being pushed toward paying for this service. If you want traditional dilation instead, appointments are apparently only available on Thursday afternoons. Making dilation available during such a limited time makes it very inconvenient for patients and makes the $50 Optomap seem like the easier option. The technician explained that many patients prefer not to be dilated, but I feel this may also be related to productivity and scheduling since dilation can take more of the doctor's time. Dilation is still an option, but limiting it to such a small appointment window makes it much less accessible. We already pay for vision insurance with the expectation that covered services will actually be reasonably available to us. Patients should not feel pressured to pay for an additional service simply because the covered alternative is intentionally difficult to schedule. I wish Visionworks would make dilation appointments more accessible and reconsider adding extra fees, including credit card fees. After paying for insurance, having additional unnecessary costs added on makes the entire experience even more frustrating.
