While explaining to the dr. why I was there, he kept using the hand gesture that we understand to mean hurry up & finish talking. Dismissive & rude. I'd fallen off a low step stool & twisted my knee. Couldn't walk on that leg for 2 weeks. Constant weakness & pain for months. My podiatrist recommended this dr. so I had hoped to get a thoughtful diagnosis & treatment or plan. I was told I have arthritis, "maybe" some torn ligaments, & need a new knee, that I need to lose a lot of weight before I can safely have surgery, & after asking TWICE for a shot to alleviate the pain, I did get one but a week & a half later I called the office for a second shot where the pain actually radiated from (other side of knee), I was told NO, to wait for 4 weeks for the shot to work (WHAT???), & to have a shot every 3 months until I get the knee surgery. I told the office woman that the doctor could've told me this when I was in there...no reply. This dr uncommunicative, disinterested, in a 'hurry.' My knee hurts 9-10 on pain scale still & I will definitely be looking for a dr who not only treats (sort of) medical issues but also sees patients as sentient beings who deserve respect & feel real pain. Maybe 2 stars are too many./Update: I went to another orthopedic surgeon for a second & much more thorough opinion I trust. Turns out I have arthritis AND bursitis in both knees, will have physical therapy for a while, only need to lose less than half of what this dr said to have knee surgery, still needed, still in pain. The bursitis is hereditary & the cause of pain. A good doctor really is important. Oh, & the new doc listened to me first because he learned things needed to know, gave me a thorough exam.

My only deduction of one star for this review, had been the two greeters on the first floor by the elevators - both had been very rude / curt. My two visits had both been first thing in the morning and both times I had been the only one in the lobby. So, not sure why they were both miserable on two separate days!!?? Plus, I believe they are volunteers!?! Miserable people shouldn't be dealing with the general public - especially in a hospital setting where patients are typically in a lot of pain and their anxiety levels are generally elevated. It was such a pleasant surprise to go to an office that was not over crowded and the front staff were friendly and helpful. (I used a different orthopedic group for foot surgery and experienced large, overcrowded waiting rooms, long lines for checking in and out, and late appointments.) ATX Orthopedics treats you like you are a very special patient and not just a number! When I met Dr. Gallagher, I could tell he was very knowledgeable in the field of orthopedics and after he looked at my knee x-rays recommended knee replacement surgery. I told him I could not live with the pain anymore and was ready to take the next step. He told me he uses a method of pain management that helps speed in the recovery of his patients. I was referred to a pain management specialist who deadened some of the nerves around my knee a week prior to surgery. This procedure was relatively painless and enabled me to have knee surgery, at Pinnacle day surgery, and go home the same day! I couldn't believe I was walking with a walker the same day as my surgery and sleeping in my own bed. If you follow his instructions and do the exercises, go to physical therapy, and take the prescribed medications you will be on the road to recovery before you know it! It has been a month since my surgery and because Dr. Gallagher is an innovative, caring surgeon I am well on my way to keeping up with my grandchildren again.
