Been living in New Bern for 5 years now and have been coming to this restaurant for quite some time, and I will explain why I finally decided to write a review about this restaurant and why I gave this place a seemingly heartless one (1) star rating. Lived in California for 22 years, and we all know it's a state of huge melting pots, I've had authentic foods from most countries, and of course certainly include but not limited to Indian food. I really didn't start to venture out into trying the restaurants in New Bern until sometime in 2012 because of work and other life's obligations. At the time when I first dined there, the service was fantastic! There was a young Indian gentleman and another very upbeat and caring waitress who always greeted us with smiles and positive attitudes... they truly made the dining experience a five (5) star one, not to mention the food was absolutely amazing... don't really want to mention another waitor (looked sneaky most of the time) working there who is from Pakistan just yet, mind you, this was 2 years ago. As time progressed, the two awesome nice and upbeat waitors are no longer working there! Said one was fired and the other I believe is the owner's son quit or something (pretty disappointed with management at that point). I hosted some events in this town, had groups of friends dining there on several occasions, paying the tab at the end of a satisfying meal as usual but noticed snarly and passive aggressive comments and jokes, and asking inappropriate questions like "what kind of Asian are you? You from China or North Korea?" made by the Pakistani waitor (Really, how ignorant can a waitor be who barely spoke proper English had the pompous audacity to ask such offensive, ridiculously insecure and air-headed questions to an American citizen and a US Marine Veteran who served and is still serving this country). I clearly remembered I spent $30 some dollars including tip that one night, checked my credit card billing statement and discovered that I was charged $60 instead! When I approached him about it one night he, instead of being professional, polite, and at least check into it for me, he raised his voice and reacted like (pretty bad acting I have to say by the way) it was absurd! I had friends over that night so I didn't want the night to be ruined by drama, so I just told him to forget about it. It's been almost a year since I went back, so I had a group of friends over again and we were all having a good time this time until the owner lady came over and whispered into my ear, "when are you guys leaving? I have another group of guests waiting for this table, can you guys leave soon? I have a business I need to run here." WOW, I was pretty livid at that point, but I kept my cool and told her my friends (who are far from the obnoxious teenagers but in their 50s, 40s, a couple 30s educated professionals who are well aware of our conversational tones) are having a good time and you don't want to upset them, and her only response was nothing but a "I know." I then told her about how I was overcharged one time and she responded to me as if it was my fault saying "You should have told me this right away!" I shrugged disappointingly and walked away. WOW, really? Lady, last time I checked I'm still a customer? I am not one of your employees whom you could just scold around and that solves the problem. Clearly remember their lunch buffet was $6.99 then went up to $7.99, then $8.99, when inquired her about the past prices the owner angrily denied how those prices never existed. Just recently they started charging us $12.94, when asked how it gotten so high by one of my friends then she confessed that gratuity was already included (so basically, you gotta pay a 39% tip whether you like their service or not). No wonder they retained the sneaky and over-dramatic employee, their operating style is trickled down from the management. Never had a problem with their food, and I feel bad for their chefs because I really enjoy the food the chefs made (and no wonder they don't look happy when I see them running in and out). Because they are the only Indian restaurant in town, clearly arrogance, denial, and threatening service are their restaurant's prominent specials now. Will say this though, they won't last a week in cities like Los Angeles or New York. Would have given them a no star, but the food made up for it. read more
