Dean is amazing. He was very persistent, calling me daily after I had expressed interest to a Facebook ad. I made the appointment. He told me it would be an hour and a half. I arrived just before 1pm and was finished at 2:30 as promised. He is very personable and has a genuine interest in seeing his clients succeed. As an experienced nurse I know when someone is on top of their game and knows exactly what they are talking about. This guy knows his stuff. The place is clean and well spaced out, one doesn't have to be a contortionist to navigate to the next machine. He met me where my fitness level is currently. He had just the right amount of motivation without seeming too pushy. He explained the purpose of each exercise and the benefits of doing them in the specific order. The rest periods seemed appropriate. He was insistent on proper form and explained precisely why. I must admit I was impressed with the guy from the start. I felt good after the introductory workout and knew that this is the place to come. The individualized attention is definitely there. Only one other guy with his trainer was there with us. No waiting for anything. For all this knowledge and expertise, one is going to pay appropriately. As he explained this is a lifestyle change. Nutrition advice will be offered. He has a 12k body composition machine to track the progress. On display in his office area is a pound of fat and a pound of muscle. A good visual with an explanation of how the changes will take place. It's expensive, but I definitely believe you get what you pay for and you definitely do not get what you don't pay for. He is a fitness professional with an amazing gym and you're going to pay for the privilege of the expertise and convenience of not having to wait. This is my first time doing personal training and I wasn't sure what to expect. I have some limitations like tachycardia, arthritis and a compressed disc (C5) and was concerned about a trainer pushing me beyond my safe limits. I came in wanting to gain muscle, strength and improve my diet and Drew has helped me with all of those things, while being considerate of my limitations. I can proudly say I have gained strength in my 60's that I didn't have when I was younger. Also, I'm able to get out of bed in the morning easier and have improved my ability to stop myself from falling, something that has happened before. This is an update to a review I posted 2 years ago. I've been a client at Bay Area Trainers for nearly 5 years. I began my journey in order to get strong and build muscle for my overall health and to keep up with my grand children. Early last year I learned that I'll eventually need a hip replacement due to osteoarthritis. I just celebrated my 64th birthday and I can say without a doubt that the exercise routine and focused training has kept me moving, comfortable, and has delayed any hip surgery. Jordan is my first personal trainer and I have enjoyed every session with her. She really listens to what I want to work on and if I absolutely hate an exercise, she comes up with fun new ways to target the same muscle groups. I originally signed up for 3 months of training and I have signed up for another 3. I have seen so my progress for myself, not only externally, but mentally as well. I no longer absolutely despise the gym. The gym is clean and fully equipped and workouts can be changed often if you get bored/need change. Just started my 3rd week of 3 days a week, 6 month commitment with Justin after my initial workout with Dean. In just the few sessions I already have more energy at home, more stamina and feel better! The trainers are all friendly, helpful, know their stuff and best of all, totally non-judgemental. It wasn't easy making this commitment at my weight and age (I'm one of the oldest clients) but it was the best decision I've made since I retired. Big shout out to Dean Lumia and his trainers at Bay Area Trainer! In highschool I was a nationally ranked competitive gymnast. So needless to say I was in VERY good shape! My career ended with a shoulder injury which lead to a surgery, which in turn led me into the work force. Well, the work force landed me with a wrist injury that left me unable to use my left (dominate) hand/wrist for over a year. Two surgeries later I could finally use it again so I decided to get back into shape. Seeing as I never had to lift weights for my gymnastics workouts I needed the right guidance. I have been going to Bay Area Trainers since September of 2020. I initially signup for 80 sessions with the goal of losing 50lbs. Before attending my first session I was nervous and felt worried that I would be the only one in the gym who looked like me, over 100lbs overweight. I knew tackling my weight problem would be a huge mountain to climb, and really did not know where to begin. From the first session I felt so comfortable with our trainer, and my worries eased. Dean is great and will get you amazing results! This review is way long overdue as I used him in 2007 before he had his own gym at the current Martinez location. Not only was I paying for a 24 Hour Fitness monthly membership but I also had to pay for a membership where Dean would train, but that no longer applies as the hourly fee is included with the current gym location in Martinez. So today's pricing is better overall! I always paid 2 months in advance and that forced me to commit to the training as well as offering a better per hourly deal. After 10 months of training with Dean, I lost 10 pounds and got in the best shape of my life. I actually had 'side abs! I trained with Dean 3 days a week and played soccer on Sundays while still enjoying my regular Coca Cola and chocolate nearly every day.... I was still able to lose the weight. Had I been able to increase my cardio another day per week and reduced my sugar intake, my results would have been sooner. Dean will give you a before and after body fat test, an overall analysis, as well as give you nutritional recipes to try while you're training to give you faster results. This place is great! This gym is used solely for personal trainers and their clients. When you sign up, you meet with Dean, the owner, who asks you about your goals and talks over the options. You're then assigned to one of his certified trainers. I signed up for 2 sessions per week for 3 months. I was assigned to Jordan and she is amazing. She was very down to earth and committed, and you can just tell that she cares about the work that she's doing to help people reach their goals. She really teaches you how to do exercises correctly so you don't injure yourself. And she checks in with you in between sessions to motivate you and provide feedback. She has a great balance of motivating and pushing you with absolutely no guilt. Realizing that sometimes you have to adapt to life. I really enjoyed my sessions with her and I look forward to working with her again in the future. After just three months, I saw a big difference in the toning of my arms and legs and slimmed down a little around my waist. I've never considered myself a gym person before now but Jordan made it feel like it was accessible to anyone, not just buff gym pros who can sometimes make it intimidating for us regular folk. The vibe of the place in general is very welcoming and the other trainers and clients become familiar faces each week. My budget could only allow for a three month stint but it was so worth it and I'd definitely sign up again in the future (just not something I can do year round). What can I say, I had never stepped foot into a gym in my entire life. My objective was to learn how to properly train, eat and maintain a healthy life and feel better. If I could give zero stars I would the owner is a complete Ass! He says oh I'm not like those other gyms I'm really working towards your goals! I was completely committed. I need to work towards a healthy weight and get where I need to be. Health is wealth! He sets me up with a trainer that isn't a nutritionist which was included in the price of $560 a month! I told him my dr was concerned with my health, blood pressure, cholesterol, pre-diabetes. When I meet with the trainer for the first time she tells me she can't tell me what I should or shouldn't eat because she isn't a nutritionist. I was a little taken back but i think hey I really don't eat bad and we would talk about what I was meal prepping. I didn't want to guess about what was correct for my body. I really enjoyed working with my trainer on lean muscle mass and working with my plantar fasciitis. Unfortunately when I went on vacation and needed to reschedule a session it was a complete fiasco. I was the bad client who didn't TELL my trainer to train me at a specific time. Whether it worked for her or not. Apparently the trainer didn't need to confirm the appointment OR tell me what time would work for her. Neither did she ask what time worked for me. And waited for me on a day that I said would probably not work for me since I was getting back late from vacation which included a lot of walking (with plantar fasciitis.) I am completely blown away with the customer service. The owner literally called me a "crazy lady" when we talked about the situation. Then proceeded to tell me if I wanted to come and work out on my scheduled day he would let me! Are you kidding me! You just called me a "crazy lady" and want me to still come spend money at your establishment?!?!?! He then proceeded to tell me he would let me out of my contract and hung up on me. When have you ever NOT made an appointment (not a no show) and been told you missed an appointment with the dr or trainer, etc... they waited for you and you were charged for a no show?!?! I found him totally by accident. I'm over weight & terribly out of shape. In 10 sessions I've noticed a difference. He is a fantastic trainer & a very nice person. I trained with Dean for about a year and a half. He was going to school and I was working so the times did have to be adjusted to what was going on in both of our lives. When we agreed on training times and he did not come TWICE, I could tell I was not a very valued client. He takes care to correct your form so that you remain safe and also get the most out of each exercise. I am a 48 year old, full time working mother of two who has been going to see Dean at Bay Area Trainer since January. I work out with Dean three times a week. Since going to Bay Area Trainer I have increased stamina and no longer need my afternoon coffee. My back problems have subsided and I can finally wear high heels again. I have lost body fat and gained muscle, dropping from a 33% body fat to a 28% body fat in a short amount of time. I have been able to shave two minutes off of my 5k run time. I am defying my diagnosis! I give huge credit to my personal trainer, Devin, from Bay Personal Trainer in Martinez, CA. When I met with a physical therapist for the first time yesterday, based on my medical chart, she was expecting someone who was walking bent over and looking down on the floor. She was surprised to see me walking upright. During the assessment process she discovered I was a lot stronger than she anticipated and gave me more challenging work to further attend to my lumbar spine concerns. I learned that Devin already had me doing a number of the exercises she was recommending. At the end, she said that I was doing all the right things to help myself keep moving even though my back is a mess. I felt deep gratitude for the amazing help Devin has been in this process. Without injury, he has been such a great help in my efforts to not be ruled by my diagnosis. He is a master of creating modifications. He consistently addresses my areas of weakness and changes the workouts to keep them challenging and fun. He is able to in the moment adjust the workout based on whatever physical discomfort I might be experiencing. My hour with him is full and I always feel confident that if I follow his lead, good things will happen. Most importantly, he never treats me as an invalid even though I have limitations. read more
