Went with my parents on a day trip to Sandpoint (sometimes nice to skip out of CDA for the day) and loved it. I appreciate a relaxed atmosphere with gourmet food (too much hype and white linen makes me nervous) so this place was perfect. What a fantastic place. We are early so not many people were there in their atmospheric dining area. Our service was prompt and courteous. And our meal was outstanding. My husband had their bleu cheese and bacon hamburger and I had their meatloaf. Both were absolutely delicious. My side vegetables were mandolined and grilled. Simple and healthy. My meatloaf had a portobello mushroom sauce. The key lime pie was the best we've ever had, including in the Florida Keys. We'll be back soon! read more

I tried coming in the past and the snooty host scoffed at us for trying to come on a weekend without a reservation. I am coming back to town and I thought I should get a reservation this time. I've tried calling the restaurant 6 times and finally on the third day of trying to get a reservation a completely rude host picked up and wouldn't take a reservation. My husband and I had been wanting some Prime Rib for awhile and saw that Baxters had it on Friday and Saturday nights. We both loved the way it was prepared and the meat was very tender and flavorful The sides were delicious as well. Mashed potatoes were delicious and asparagus and the salad was fresh and just the right size with House Blue Cheese as the dressing. We would highly recommend this dish. Baxters is our hands down favorite dinner spot in Sandpoint. Great, friendly service. Well prepared food with daily specials. The menu isn't extensive, but everything we've tried is excellent. A limited but well selected list of beer on tap, and a well priced wine list with something for everyone. We are originally from New England and order the Lobster Roll appetizer every time. OMG. It's better than Maine only because it's bulging with very nicely prepared Lobster. Even served in a buttered and toasted New England hot dog bun! (Cut on top, in case you didn't know). The owners are great, and always available to answer questions or get feedback on any new item they're trying out. This summer, they plan to open a wine bar in the adjoining basement space. Fun! No reservations except for large groups, so arrive early--like 5:30--on a Friday evening. Saturday isn't as busy and weekdays are generally easy. Closed Sundays. read more

One of the best places I've been to. The menu is somewhat limited, but very diverse, and extremely delicious. The staff is very friendly, and even though they are very busy, there is still that endearing small town charm. Worst thing I've seen while dining is how the guests treat the staff. I appreciate an establishment who doesn't just cater to rude patrons, and stands up for their employees! That in itself is enough for returning visits. Great dinner experience. Casual atmosphere and a very local feel. Our dinner was delicious. The coffee crusted park chop was the best chop I've ever had. I don't usually order chops at a Resturant because they are way over cooked and dried out. But, this chop was cooked to perfection. DISAPPOINTED! Ranted and raved about this restaurant to friends and random tourist.. Took my daughter to Baxter's for lunch for her SWEET SIXTEEN BIRTHDAY.. WOW!!!!!!!!! I will never give this place my business again... I kept my cool not to upset my daughter any more than she was. MANAGEMENT TREATED US LIKE DIRT... my daughter who seldom eats out due to health issues (Celiac and highly allergic to milk) was served dishes with cheese in both her spinach salad and tacos after we requested no dairy products. This is not what upset us, the man literally rolled his eyes and sighed while we ordered the food. Waiting for our food we asked for drinks, not good.. We left the restaurant feeling horrible, spending hard earned money to be treated so poorly... That man truly ruined our afternoon and our appetites! read more

The restaurant has a nice vibe, beers on tap, and a variety of wines by the glass and bottle. I also got the key lime pie. It was homemade and pretty tasty. We stopped in for dinner. I had a chicken breast with broccoli and mashed potatoes. It was good but not great. Son had a steak with the same sides and he said it was tasty and cooked right. My wife had a penne pasta dish that she rated excellent. Waiter was great. Ambiance was perfect. The turkey basil soup was absolutely KILLER! I would return again and again just for a bowl of soup. Very good food and service! We came in for an early dinner and it turned out the kitchen wasn't yet opened for dinner. They took excellent care of us during their Happy Hour and then opened the kitchen early for us. My wife loved the duck breast. Over two days, the steamers, lobster rolls and Brie appetizer were all excellent. The only thing which wasn't absolutely perfect was the duck confit, which was just a little too salty. This is no doubt one of our favorite restaurants in Sandpoint. Our favorite entree is the portobello burger with blue cheese ( or your choice) which is excellent and never differs, always consistently ample, hot and delicious. We've enjoyed many of their entrees and apps. Now they have The Back Door which is connected to the restaurant but down below. It is a very cool, spacious, comfy and intimate ambience. "Well, I've had worse meals." Was the best thing anyone had to say when we left this place. After a ten minute wait our server took our order, 45 minutes later our food came... Well most of it... I had to wait another five minutes for my meal. Our server checked on us a total of 0 times and never even asked how the food was... He probably knew better. The staff was so inattentive our table of four actually ran out of water. Burgers were over cooked and the soup tasted like the first time you tried chef Boyardee as an adult and realized how truly repulsive it really was. They didn't even get the French fries right. With the stellar ratings this place has I am simply terrified to try another place with good reviews in Sandpoint. Usually I am all about giving a place a second shot but I think I'll hit the McDonald's on the way out of town if I'm ever that desperate. read more

Even though I am giving Baxter's on Cedar, 3 stars, let me say, that I want to be giving it closer to 4 stars, but my overall experience with this restaurant, leaves me unable to quuuuuite, push it to 4 stars, it's somewhere closer to 3.7, if I could put that, haha. Anyway... Around 3:00pm, I was looking for a great spot to sit at a bar, to order a glass of wine and a light appetizer. I found Baxter's on Cedar, on Yelp and enthusiastically wandered over from my B&B to give it a try. Upon first glance, it did appear pretty busy for this time of day, which was a good sign to me, at me first. There was only one couple at the bar though, so I thought nothing of, saddling up to order. I loved the decor...lots of brick and outdoor texture, with fresh flowers on every table. However, the moment I sat down, I felt tension from both the man behind the bar and what I quickly observed to be another man, that was the only other server in the restaurant. I did not get a very welcomed feeling, at all. They both appeared agitated and hurried. The man behind the bar, barely looked at me, as he slid a wine menu my way, after I sat there awkwardly, for several minutes. When I caught his eye again, I ordered the Duckhorn Decoy Chardonnay. I was never asked if I would like to see a food menu, as he frustratingly slammed and washed cups and plates around, behind the bar, with a scowl on his face. A few minutes later, after spotting the menu's off to the left of me, I popped up off of my stool, and cheerfully said that I was just going to grab an appetizer menu, real quick. When I sat back down, with his head down, not even looking up at me, he muttered, "I could have gotten it for you!", obviously annoyed. But I honestly, did not feel comfortable to ask him for a menu. I ordered the Baker's Dozen, Shrimp in the Raw, with housemade cocktail sauce and then proceeded to wait for 20 minutes, for it to arrive. My wine glass became empty in that time and it wasn't until I caught his attention again, by announcing that I would like to order something else, that I ordered another glass, this time, a Pinot Grigio, as they no longer carry the Sauvignon Blanc. I have to say though, that the shrimp were perfection. I wasn't expecting them to be warm (as the usual shrimp cocktail is chilled), but it was really delicious that they were warm, as they were able to soak up the sauce. They were plump and pink and juicy, Gulf Shrimp. Now, let me just describe the atmosphere of the service, from the perspective of someone that was sitting at the bar, near the kitchen and privy to hearing everything. The male server (his name is Nikia (sp?) I know his name, because the man behind the bar, barked it at him several times), was completely overwhelmed for the entire hour that I was there 3pm-4pm, as was "the man behind the bar". They were both grumbling complaints under their breath and stomping around. Nikia actually said "Fuuuuck!" multiple times, within my ear shot and one time, when someone at a table with a large party, requested more ketchup, I distinctly heard him mutter, "fuck you!", as he rushed by me. That, is just not okay. I got the feeling that they were not expecting to be as busy as they were, at that time and were not prepared to handle the volume that they were hit with. So, here is the thing...I made the decision to come back to Baxter's later in the evening, for dinner! Why? Because the entree menu looked divine, my shrimp had been perfect and I surmised that they would probably be more appropriately staffed and less disheveled for dinner service. And I was mostly right, about that assumption. I arrived at 7:30 and headed straight for the bar. The restaurant was full and there was a wait outside. The same staff from earlier, were all there, plus a few extra's. "The man behind the bar", was still in his position and Nikia, actually recognized me from earlier and said, "welcome back, darling!", as he whirred past me. I preferred this greeting, over the other one! After some observation, I realized that "the man behind the bar", was actually probably one of the owners, which surprised me, given the treatment that I had received before. This time he kept my water refilled (earlier in the day, I was never even offered water), during dinner and gave me the recommendation, of a Merlot, when I inquired as to which red, I should order. I was between the pork chop and the halibut that was on special and he recommended the halibut. The halibut was very fresh tasting and perfectly cooked, with a nice crust on the outside and tender and flaky in the middle. It came on a bed of just 'meh', rice pilaf-ish type stuff and alongside perfectly cooked asparagus. The thing that kind of ruined it for me was the berry sauce it was covered in. It just didn't blend well; both were tasty on their own, but not together. Overall, my experience here, had high's and low's. I would probably try it again, but not on my very next visit to Sandpoint. read more

Wow! Hubby and I were looking for a nice place to eat on our way up to Schweitzer. This food was clearly fresh and made from scratch. I got the lobster (it was a special) that was not only delicious but the least I've ever paid for it. Hubby got the lamb shops and at one point I thought I was sitting across from Meg Ryan. Needless to say we were impressed and very full! The owner came and chatted with us and we told him next time we were there we want to try the key lime pie. Later he sent us over a little taste. Absolutely incredible food and service! I visit Sandpoint a couple of times a year, and this was my first time eating at Baxters on Cedar. It will definitely not be my last! The entire staff were friendly and responsive. They did an excellent job of making us feel served and welcomed. We ordered the chicken, meatloaf sliders, and the pear and brie bruschetta. It was all so delicious, I honestly do not think you can go wrong with anything on their menu. And of course, after reading about how amazing the key lime pie is, we had to try it. Like everything else about Baxters on Cedar, it was delicious. If you have room (or even if you don't!) you should give the pie a try. It is really that good. read more

They had a very surprising wine selection, a homey comfort food atmosphere with little twists on popular cuisine. I sat outdoors and had excellent service. The food is tasty but honestly nothing to truly right home about. Our Moroccan lamb sliders were a bit under cooked for ground lamb. We did have a below par lobster roll served on a toasted hot dog bun, The duck confit with creamy rizzo was the star of the night, unless you get a Vietnamese coffee! Overall satisfying. April 2019. We recently moved here and have eaten at Baxter's about 4 times. The Good: Wow. Every visit has been great! Great burgers, amazing fish entrees, tasty deserts, fresh lobster rolls, great specials. The owner usually mans the bar and it seems that he takes delivering quality food very seriously. His team also has the same sentiment... from his talented waitstaff and kitchen staff... everyone really seems to care to deliver quality. The atmosphere is also very cool and hip without being over the top pretentious. The Bad: -we have yet to find one negative.
