Roasted Pork Roll with crackling, spiced apple, slaw and lime aioli, serve with fries

The Germans seem to have mastered the art of comfort food. Warm, hearty, rich and delicious dishes where servings are always generous. Famous for their pork and beer, the Bavarian is no different. In Bavarian Bier Cafe you can expect a modern twist to the traditional classics of Bavarian cuisine. It started off with my husband craving for Pork Knuckle that lead us here. And their Whole Crispy Pork Knuckle with creamy mash, sauerkraut, bier jus and Granny Smith Apple compote did not disappoint. The servings were generous, skin was crispy, the sauerkraut and apple compote did their job in complementing the richness of the pork knuckle. The Roasted Pork Roll with crackling, spiced apple, slaw and lime aioli served with fries was also delicious. Every bite you can hear the crunch from the crackling. Yes, of course the CRUNCH is very important! And the kids menu was reasonably cheap. For $6 you can choose from Chicken Schnitzel, Fish, Sausage and more which all comes with either mashed potatoes or chips. The menu itself comes as a colouring paper to keep the kids occupied. In terms of comfort eating, I went all out by having one litre of Franziskaner Mango Weissbier, or Mango Beer for short. It's the reason I keep coming back to this place for. Located in the Entertainment Quarter precinct, this restaurant is welcoming and family friendly. The staff were also very helpful even though it was a busy Sunday afternoon. This will not be my last visit, I will come back, if not for the Pork Knuckle it will be for the Mango Beer!

Sport and beer go together pretty well, right? Well right next to the SCG is a very good spot for the Bavarian Bier Cafe, and if you're familiar with the York Street cafe, you'll likely greet this place like an old friend. Perhaps you're craving a schnitzel or have a hankering for some Weissbier - either way, you'll come out of here a happy camper. Especially if you're heading to see some sport.

When going to Fox Studios to see a movie or concert, most of the restaurants are a little bit fancy and overpriced, while the pub is not an option as it is packed with people drinking. Fair enough. For a reasonably priced meal with no fuss head to the Bavarian Bier Café. They do good, honest schnitzels, with sides like baked potatoes with rich mayonnaise and a rocket salad. Or steak, or pork belly, or sausages... The portions are generous so go there hungry. If I was ever really hungry I would get the tasting platter with about six different kinds of meat but unfortunately I'm never that hungry. Might be good to share though, so just need to find a like minded meat eater. This place can get busy on a Friday or Saturday night, even if there are no big events on in the precinct. So booking is best. I haven't mentioned the beer yet, but do I really have to? Amazing selection of beers on tap, with a range of sizes. What more could you want?

The beer was good ! Ordered chicken wings and jalapeño pretzel but were told they were out (weren't told when we were seated) ... Ordered house pretzel with the Diablo sauce (that came with the chicken wings - Diablo in German must mean mild) ...Pork knuckle was oily because the cook didn't render the fat properly. Chicken sntz was oily, overall it seemed the oil hadn't been changed for awhile as it had a burnt oil flavor . Sausages were bland and oily, the beer jus was very fatty. Asked for mustard, got dijonnaise ... The sauerkraut was sloppy and taste d like salty moosh, red cabbage was too sweet. The York St one is better ! Don't bother with this place ... Staff are nice but horrible with recommending food and drinks.

What a disappointment! This place used to be good for food but it's just poor quality. I ordered the onion rings & mushroom"s" - onion rings were ok, they served about 8 but they gave only one mushroom & not worth the $14! But the worst was the main & I ordered the LÖWENSCHNITZEL 300g expecting it to be a decent portion but it wasn't, the crumbed mixture tasted of oil & the edges were overdone & tough. The hotdogs are OK but not worth paying over $10 for them.

A friend of mine wanted to combine a few beers with a meal, in the sun in a place that was kid friendly and the Bavarian Bier Cafe at the Entertainment Quarter was decided upon and it was a good choice in the end. The Bavarian beers were large and refreshing (not so refreshing the next day) , the meals were large and tasty and even the kids meals looked nice. I'm sure they would've liked them too if they weren't so busy playing in the park just up from here. It was a nice afternoon in a nice place but just be careful with the beers. People try tell me you don't get hangovers with these type of beers but they are out and out liars!

Pretzel was a lot nicer than the garlic bread. Nice butter.

I went to this place looking for an average burger but was very surprised when I discovered the burger was mouth watering.

Located on arguably Newcastle's best eat out street, Darby Street and great to see it adding another dimension to the variety of restaurants already on offer. Tastefully Austrian with beer flags and music, but not at all in your face. We ordered 4 different beers and I absolutely loved the different glasses for each. Pretzels to start that were warm; perfectly browned and salted on the outside and soft on the inside. My friend also got the pretzel stick served with a Camembert spread. Menu wasn't too foreign with my friend opting for the schnitzel, my partner the farmers plate and pork knuckle for me. My partner didn't like the amount of fat in his meal but for better or worse I ate every last piece of fat and meat I could scavenge from the knuckle. It was amazing! Ending the night with apple schnapps that were too strong for me but friend loved them. Both of us going traditional with the apple strudel and the Viennese iced coffee for my partner. He said the coffee was very strong with my friend swooping in again to finish it off. We are a good team like that! The bill was expensive at over $200 but I feel it was worth it. Made another booking already to take my Dad for Father's Day.

Although it's quite new, the decor feels a little tired. Some furniture might have be inherited from the old restaurant (Long bench). BUT, don't let this put you off. The food was delicious. We shared our meals and the waffles with ricotta and fresh fruit was one of the best breakfasts I've ever had in Newy. It was incredible! Service was good. Friendly, useful and sweet. Maybe a bit young and nervous but I'm sure after another few months she'll be great. The dinner menu looks well priced and delicious and so we'll definitely be back. A sophisticated take on lots of pork dishes. The back courtyard would be a nice place for an afternoon German beer, it looked like they had a selection on tap. Give this place a try next time you're on Darby St.

When arriving you're usually ushered in with great precision by a snappy little fella in a pair of Lederhosen, no messing about, it's all business & schnitzel. Most people know what they're going to eat before they even get there & usually your eyes are bigger than your stomach. Never fear order up & there's take away boxes available! Una's has a great selection of beers, or there's a bottle shop of the road if you'd rather to BYO with a bottle of wine. I tend to try & not drink too much beer here for the fear of filling up & not having room for my Schnitz. I've tried a few of the starters, Deep Fried Camembert, a decadent delight. The Dutch Beef Croquets are a favourite shared amongst friends & topped with a little of the mustard located on the table - yum yum! The mains, well it's hard to go past the Schnitzel! I've been here with friends & watched them order other great plates, such as the Una's Beef Goulash, with Spatzle. I'd love to try it some time, however I'm always drawn to the golden schnitzel. I've had the Vienna Schnitzel, & the Chicken, my favourite dish at Una's would have to be the Chicken Jaegar Schnitzel, served with mushroom sauce, rosti & a cabbage salad on the side. It's so HUGE you wonder how you're going to get through, I must admit though I usually do. I have to admit I even had an occasion where we were pressed for time as were going to a concert & had stopped in for a bite.. My sister said we haven't got long we'd better eat quickly. I think I ate that schnitzel like I was at the world class Hot Dog eating competition at Coney Island. No sooner had I finished my meal (in record time) that the patron's on the adjacent table commented on how well & quickly I'd gotten through it. I was a little embarrassed, but proudly so, lol! ;-) go ME! If you decide to get a take away box, or open the second stomach there's always a serve of Una's Apple Strudel & Ice-cream to top it all off, why not get one share it, just to try. So pack your stretchy pants & visit Una's, the perfect place to enjoy a schnitzel with friends especially in the cold winter months.

My partner and I chanced dinner without a reservation (with our backup burger plan already established), and I thought we'd be turned away but luckily it was just the two of us. This meant being confined to the window seats and ordering at the bar rather than table service but that's a small price to pay. People sitting on the other side were tastefully blocked by a partition of greenery which still allowed a degree of privacy. The place was abuzz with conversation, laughter and music so it was loud but not annoyingly so. After a good peruse over the menu; featuring schnitzels, pork knuckle and sausages to name a few, we settled on the Haus made pretzel, Texan schnitzel for my partner and the Bavarian tasting platter for me. We both LOVE warm pretzels with butter and these certainly did not disappoint. I could eat them all day! The schnitzel was a large portion my partner ultimately couldn't finish. The platter consisting of pork belly, sausages and schnitzel is a great introduction to the menu but also tested my stomach capacity. Washing it down with 500mls of Lowenbrau didn't help but it felt necessary for an authentic experience. Menu is on the expensive side but for an occasional splurge I don't think it will hurt. I certainly intend on returning and with a second one opening closer to home it has been made that much more tempting.
