There are only a few German restaurant options in the Edmonton area that serve Schnitzel and Spatzle (a German-style egg noodle). Bauernschmaus is one of the options but unfortunately not the best option. The decor was authentic and homely but the service was drawn out and lacked follow up from our waitress. There was also a crazy long wait for our food even though the restaurant was about half full. With the entrees, you got a side salad to start which was tasty with a sweet dressing. The schnitzel however was not crispy and served at room temperature. You also get a very tiny portion of the side you choose regardless if it is fries or spatzle.

The Bauernschmaus is an interesting, if not difficult name to remember and pronounce. It doesn't exactly roll off the tongue nicely. A buddy of mine and I decided to check out this German/Austrian restaurant on a cold, first Sunday of winter for lunch. The place has an old school vibe to it and reminded me of being back at my grandma's house. From what I saw, I'm guessing that 99% of their clientele are regulars as many were dressed in their Sunday best and of a certain age (aka. old geezers). We were greeted rather rudely by one of the waiters when we first walked in (Urbanspoon never lies) but the waitress we had was nice enough. Also, I oddly got some stares from a few of said older clientele which was a tad off putting. Don't you just love when a restaurant has no website AND no menu to see beforehand? I took a few photos to remedy the situation (sorry, the photos aren't the best). Most of the dishes are in the $15-18 price range but include a soup (goulash) or salad along with your choice of side. We ordered: - Bread pork cutlet with mushroom cream paprika sauce ($11.50) - I picked the mixed salad and dumpling as my choice of side. I like how you can hear your meat being hammered back in the kitchen so you know it's fresh. The sauce was delicious with the pork cutlet and the meat itself was tender (and not greasy as it was lightly fried). The dumpling was interesting to try as I've never had one before. The lunch deal is cheap but could have used more vegetables (two dinky carrots don't cut it). - Promenaden platte ($15.50) - combination platter of breaded smoked pork loin, sausage and pork cutlet. I tasted a bite of the sausage which was quite good. My buddy enjoyed his as well but would have liked a sauce to go with his various meats. Verdict? The food is decent but be prepared to wait. I'm not sure if I would go out of my way again to eat at the Bauernschmaus. German/Austrian food is heavy on the meat, deep fried and doesn't have that oomph/flavour that makes me want to go back for more. If you want something simple, then definitely check them out. Look for the Centre 99 sign as it is located in quite the random spot.

Extremely reluctant to review this gem of a restaurant for the simple fact that I'd rather not share this hidden secret with anyone else. The good was absolutely delicious. I had the butter pan fried pork chops with dumpling. The sauerkraut complimented the meal well and the rye bread was great for cleaning the platte afterward. Atmosphere was great with authentic German/Austrian decor throughout. Service was nothing short of excellent. Prices were very reasonable and we left very satisfied.

The Bauernschmaus is one of my favorite restaurants in the city - we do all of our family dinners there. It is an incredibly charming little family run business. When you walk through the doors, you are immersed into the atmosphere and culture; it truly is an experience. My favorite dish is the Paprika Hendel (chicken with paprika sauce), potatoes, and a side of sauerkraut. If you like sauerkraut, you have to have it here because it is phenomenal! The menu items are named in German but the descriptions of the food are in English. The meal starts with fresh buns and rye bread, followed by a salad that is to die for! My family has been trying to get the recipe for about 20 years now! The service is always great and the staff are friendly. I love everything about The Bauernschmaus. It's a pretty well-kept secret except to those who frequent it. And those who do, are loyal customers who eat there on a regular basis for the many reasons I have listed above. Check it out! I dare you!

What a fun experience! The restaurant is like a quaint home outside and the servers were SO nice. I tried the parmaschitzel with dumpling and the pork roast with red cabbage. The salad served with scalloped potatoes was a nice appy with a delcious sour sauce and just a bit of decadent goodness. The parmaschnitzel had a nice crunch and a deliciously strong cheesy flavour, but the dumpling was on the slightly tougher side. The roast pork had some delcious streaks of fat, but sometimes the fat was a bit chewy. Personally I found the red cabbage too sweet but perhaps some like it that way. All in all, I would go back for more!

We started w a pierogi sampler plate. Every current flavour - some new ones, chicken curry and pulled pork. All delicious w great sauces. The bread was super tasty- multigrain w garlic butter. Who knew gluten free bread could be so good Pickle soup and French onion soups were great. Pickle soup is not that sour so definitely try if you want lighter fare. Most had chicken or pork schnitzel specials were great. My husband is half Austrian and raised on schnitzel - he loves CTs schnitzel. I had the tomato and avocado salad. Great dressing - not sweet or cloying just a great accompaniment to the rich avocado - w grilled chicken that must be marinated- it was so good. Too full for dessert again! But have their Apple strudel which is lovely. CT is a YEG institution for good reason. Try their pierogi's at Strathcona Farmers or Bountiful.

(I know the year 1982 well... It's when I was born. Ha ha.) Any restaurant with that kind of longevity is a mainstay. A reliable "forever" type of place that has stood the test of time - and believe me, it has been a test. Owned and operated by three generations of the Borówka family, their roots from Poland and Ukraine are reflected in the menu. They have even opened a second location downtown in recent years, expanding their comfort food empire twofold. So what is "continental" cuisine? By definition it's any food from Europe. And Continental Treat is prepared to feed you just like your European grandmother did. Voted Best/Favourite Continental Restaurant in 2020, 2021, 2022, and 2023 by the Edmonton Journal, this restaurant's legacy lives on in the hearts of Edmontonians. The ambiance is palpable. Just walking by Continental Treat on any given evening, you will be delighted by a visual tableau of the most cozy and romantic restaurant that you have ever laid your eyes upon. Dim lighting, candle-lit tables, lovers holding hands and gazing into each other's eyes... That's what goes on here. I visited on a Saturday evening and was in the mood for a little bit of the CT magic. Their corner location allows for windows on both sides and the inside of the restaurant is packed with old-world charm. You'll find a lot of dark wood, perfectly set tables adorned with tablecloths, European art, and the aforementioned candle light. (We're talking wine bottles being used as candle holders with tons of wax dripping down the sides type of vibe.) It's exceedingly cozy with light jazzy piano music being played in the background. The space is certainly not modern in any sense but it feels right. Situated at a comfortable table in the middle of the dining room, I got myself acquainted with the martini list. There are some interesting options to choose from and I was curious about the Pink Squirrel (Amaretto, Creme de Cacao, cream, splash of grenadine - $14.95 for 2oz). It would be nice to see a "signature cocktail" or martini that reflects the restaurant and its cuisine a bit better (maybe it's the C-Tini, actually) but I am always happy to try something pink. I loved this pretty, pink, girly drink and enjoyed it thoroughly! Did it look a bit like Pepto-Bismol? Yes (and we made jokes about it). But it tasted delicious (not too strongly boozy) and I loved the cherry-sweet flavour! It was almost like a dessert! This martini looked cute and I would definitely order it again. Our server was personable and friendly, staying on top of our every need for the duration of our visit. I'm glad that I made a reservation because it wasn't long before every single table was occupied. We were immediately served a warm basket of two types of bread (gluten-free!) and I helped myself to a slice of rye slathered in ample amounts of melty butter. If I had to pick the most famous item on the Continental Treat menu it would have to be the Creamy Dill Pickle Soup (Helena's famous dill pickle soup - $6.50 for a cup). I have ordered it every single time that I have dined here and I'm sure that many other people do the same. This soup is a hit for a reason. If you had an Eastern European grandma (like I did) this will remind you of her soups. It's lighter than you think it will be and filled with nice big pieces of potatoes, pickles (of course!) and other vegetables. The pickle flavour is at the forefront but it isn't too much. (Let's be honest, it could never be too much for me). It's cozy comfort in soup form. In a city that boasts many amazing soups, this is certainly one of the top picks. You can even order a "Euro Bowl" which I think is a really big bowl of soup! No one would judge you - it would be the right call. There are also several other soups on the menu that sound amazing and if I could ever tear myself away from the pickle soup I would love to try the Red Barszcz or the Sauerkraut & Potato. Can we talk about the gluten-free aspect for a sec? Continental Treat wasn't always a "gluten-free restaurant." This change was brought to the menu in 2007 when the decision was made to embrace gluten-free cooking both to promote healthier eating as well as to provide wonderful European dishes to diners who have intolerances. The goal was to make food that is indistinguishable or superior to traditional gluten-containing products. And I have to say, eating that rye bread, I would never have known the difference. This makes me think of my Polish grandfather, who did indeed have celiac. He would have loved this place. I don't think of Continental Treat as a "gluten-free restaurant," I think of it as a European restaurant that happens to serve gluten-free food. You KNOW that Continental Treat is going to have Signature Gourmet Pierogies & Dumplings on their menu - it's a must a
