We had a wonderful dining experience and will definitely be back! Everything we ordered was absolutely delicious--from the fried calamari and perfectly cooked lamb chops to the shrimp spaghetti and the fried green beans topped with goat cheese. Every dish was flavorful and beautifully prepared. The drinks were also fantastic. I only wish I could remember their names because they were that good! To finish the evening, we enjoyed the tiramisu, which was delicious and the perfect ending to our meal. While it wasn't complimentary for our wedding anniversary celebration, it was still well worth it. We went with another couple. It's a very good place - they transformed an old firehouse into a restaurant. They kept the firemen poles - just a great use of the space. Our server was very personable, attentive and spot on with recommendations. If there was any 'down' to the dinner it was that the music they play is very loud - they should turn it down a bit. Otherwise, a perfect dinner. We started with the Bread Service. The bread itself was standard but we had a choice of Herbed Butter, Whipped Ricotta, Roasted Garlic OIive Oil. We opted for herbed butter which had a great flavor. Since I love olives, we also ordered the House Cured Olives which came with chili oil, Gorgonzola and roasted garlic. They were very good and there were plenty of them. We also chose the Three Cheese Beef And Pork "Meatballs", which are seared on the outside and flavored with roasted garlic tomato sauce and Parmesan cheese. They are actually squares (four to an order) and they had an amazing flavor. Next we had the Wedge Salad, which also serves two people. It had tomatoes, red onions, dill ranch, bleu cheese and pepperoni. The flavors really worked well together! We tried the pear salad (also served two people) which had arugula, pecorino, pine nut crumble and Saba. As with everything else, the flavors were very good. My wife had the Trenne Bombay, which was a triangle shaped pasta with Pomodoro, Cream, Pancetta, and dill. I loved it - the flavors were amazing with a slight hint of dill. I'm not a big pasta guy but I would order this! One of our party had the Eggplant Parmesan which was served with Fontina, Parmesan Custard, Besciamella, Pomodoro and Basil. I am not an eggplant guy but I decided to try a bite and was pleasantly surprised. The guest who ordered it loves eggplant and she said it was honestly the best she's eaten! Two of us had the Parmesan-Herb Crusted Lamb Chops with Roasted Garlic and White Wine Cream Sauce. We both like lamb chops but both have eaten far more that weren't good than good ones. We were very pleased with these. They were breaded, which is a bit unusual but it worked. The sauce was the perfect pairing - these were very good. The vegetables are all add-ons. We decided to order the Grilled Brussel Sprouts, with Balsamic vinegar, Honey and Crispy Pancetta. They came with enough to share with two or three. That were really tasty. The balsamic was the perfect flavor - they were very good (and I love good Brussel sprouts but most places don't prepare them well). You wouldn't think we had room for dessert - but we had to. The couple we were with ordered the S'mores Panna Cotta. I don't know what all they had in them, but they were really tasty and not too heavy. The order of one came in two bowls. My wife and I shared the cheese cake. I honestly forget what type of cheese was in it, but it was extremely flavorful and a perfect texture. Our server said she loved it but some folks thought it had too much of a fig flavor - we didn't find that at all - it was a perfect flavor with a very slight hint of lemon. They overbooked the restaurant the night we dined here and had a reservation at 8pm. Didn't really give us an explanation or an estimated wait time. Also didn't offer to comp anything. Just said there were people in front of us. We waited it out and got seated at 8:40pm. Waiter didn't say anything about the wait time. Once we were seated the experience was fine. The food was very good and the waiter was attentive. Highly recommend the meatballs, spinach dumplings and the fettuccine prosciutto pasta. Our server greeted us promptly with water. He told us they are a family style restaurant, and we definitely received enough food to share. We got the spinach dumplings next, which I thought were ok but I don't like spinach. My husband does and he absolutely loved it and told me it will live in his dreams forever. There is an open kitchen concept on the second floor and a nice bar in the middle of the first floor. We did a family style meal so I was able to try a little bit of everything. The restrooms were kind of gross because they are unisex and the toilet seats were left up and there was pee on the floor and I'm sure if they knew it would have been taken care of. Our friends from Kansas City recommended we sign up, march on over and extinguish our hunger at Batallion. We are so glad that we did. As you'll read (and see) the Italian restaurant is located in a rehabbed firehouse, hence, Battalion refers to its' heritage. We trekked over on the Saturday of the Thanksgiving holiday weekend, after making a reservation that didn't seem to have any time slots unavailable. As we entered the establishment it was obvious that this was a very thoughtful designed and renovated space; beautiful decor, a gorgeous Chihuly-style chandelier above the bar and a hip post-industrialist vibe. So far so good. While there were small groups of people, we did see plenty of empty tables and a smattering of people at the bar, which did give us some pause as to why, on a Saturday night, the place wasn't packed. If their was a concern that the quality of the food or the service wasn't good, that was quickly put aside. Our server, Alexander showed up immediately, was cheerful, knowledgable and on top of things. The menu might not be extensive, it really did offer something for everyone, but the true delight is that it brought it home with unique preparations and delicious tastes. We started with the bread basket (fresh and served with creamy ricotta) and the marinated olives. I loved both, but the olives set the stage for what was to come. They were marinated in a slightly spicey bath of oil and crushed red pepper and mixed in with crumbles of a delectable blue cheese. Yummy! On to our mains, and while we had a very hard time making decisions, Alexander was there with expert descriptions and insights. Ultimately the Eggplant Parmesan, served as lightly breaded thinly sliced patties in a combo red sauce with a bechamel center came to our delight. For me, I had debated over a heartier meat dish and a pasta, but after hearing Alexander describe the Spaghetti with yellow tomatoes in a crushed red tomato sauce, I had to jump in. And boy am I glad that I did. This may have been one of the simplest dishes but best tasting Spaghetti's that I have ever had. And plentiful too. Oh, and speaking of fire houses, it also brought a bit of pleasant heat (yes, pun intended). The meal was accompanied by a terrific bottle of Chianti Reserva from a fairly impressive listing of Italian vino's. You really couldn't be stationed at a better restaurant in downtwon San Antonio. The food is no longer Italian, and while the menu seems to aim for shareable small plates, the execution doesn't support that concept at all. The experience was confusing and underwhelming from start to finish we actually left and went to another restaurant just to get tiramisu. I was one of Battalion's original customers when it first opened, but now I barely recognize the place. In addition, the waitress seemed to be disconnected from the place. (From January, 2025) Thinking about italian eats, my girlfriend and I decided to book a spot via OpenTable on a whim for a Saturday dinner in mid-January. This random booking on a fly led to one of the most satisfying dining experiences that we both will cherish and continue to talk about whenever we visit San Antonio. It was about a 15 minute walk from our hotel, we arrived on time and were seated outside. While it was cold and windy, they had space heaters available to keep us warm as we waited for our server. For a moment, we debated if we should move inside since the wind made things quite chilly for us (we should've worn jackets, oops) but decided to stay outside once we were approached by Kelly, our server. He had a bubbly personality and excellent knowledge of the food and wine, giving us great recommendations. The glasses of wine he recommended for us (Erath Pinot Noir for my girlfriend, Cantinia Montepulciano for myself) were both excellent and complimented our meals well. As for our meal, they had a restaurant week special which both of us participated in which were a 3 course meal. For the appetizer round, we started with the spinach dumplings and the trenne bombay (think of penne but more squarish). Both were excellent. The dumplings has a hearty taste mixed with the truffle cream, shaved parm, and saltiness of the prosciutto topping. The trenne bombay was an awesome pasta dish with the pasta cooked perfect al dente mixed in a tomato pomodoro sauce with pancetta topped with shaved parm and dill. We probably could've ordered that pasta as our main course (which is available as a main), that's how much we liked it. But we each decided on the NY Strip as our main course. Cooked medium rare and served with crispy potatoes, the steak was tender and juicy with a rosemary/lemon/fennel seasoning; bon appetit! Finally, our dessert consisted of the tiramisu and the s'mores panna cotta; both of which we scarfed down. The tiramisu was soft and contained layers of sweetness. Meanwhile, the panna cotta contained graham cracker crumbles with a marshmallow finish and chocolate chips mixed in, absolutely devine! Great food combined with great service made this one happy restaurant experience (despite the aggressive winds). The restaurant is lucky to have Kelly who was a shining star that night. As someone who worked in the service industry, I appreciated his graciousness and attitude in making this a memorable experience. I booked a reservation for my husband's 50th birthday celebration a week in advance for a party of 12. They followed up with courtesy phone calls and text messages confirming reservations a day or two prior, and the day of to make sure we were still set for the day . This place is sooo yummy! It definitely exceeded my expectations. My best friend and I ordered few different items. He did a tasting and had the meatballs, chicken parm, and tiramisu. We also got the bread service with honey ricotta and roasted garlic and olive oil. I love that they had so many different options of spreads to go with their fresh bread. I will say it is filling! My friend also got their homemade italian soda and that was a hit! The server we had was great. She was very attentive and kind. I liked the ambiance a lot. We got to sit upstairs which was nice because you can see southtown/downtown from the tables. Definitely a great atmosphere or perfect for a date night! Will be coming back for my bday! We diner in for a party of 7 for dinner. Our server Julia was amazing. She kept our drinks full and our belly's happy. The restaurant is very clean and decorated very nicely. I had a pasta dish and many others at the table got the restaurant week deal which I forgot to take a pic of the menu. Ample parking behind the restaurant which you have to pay for. The restaurant is an old fire station with the pole still intact on the 2nd floor. The food was good and fresh. It did take awhile for our food but I could tell it was freshly being made and not opened out of a packet like other Italian chains. read more
