Mud baths with mildew on the walls tubs are super gross
    Tara P.

The mud bath facility looks atrocious! We walked in and checked in for our mud baths and made the mistake of booking without looking at pictures beforehand. Once we saw how horrible the place looked and outdated we asked for a refund we had only booked the package less than an hour before and the receptionist was not accommodating at all saying that a refund wouldn't be possible. Don't go here!

We came here last year for a romantic day and when we were booking our Valentines Spa day this year, ended up choosing a different spa that is just steps away...that made me realize I had not reviewed the Baths at Roman Spa and also gave me a little more perspective on what else is available in the area. We had previously had a mud treatment in Calistoga at a different spa and we loved it but it wasn't a traditional mud bath, so we booked a mud bath here and a couples massage. We arrived early because we were advised we would have access to the pool and we love to relax in the water and the ladies in the office were nice enough. Unfortunately, to get to the pool, we had to go out of the office and across the parking lot, which was strange and definitely not relaxing so I had to take a star off for that. Who wants to go to a spa to relax only to have to go back outside and play frogger with cars coming in to get to the pool area just to have to do it again to get back to the spa. I will say that the pool was covered and warm and the fact that we were the only ones there was nice, so if you don't care about leaving the facility to use the hotel pool then you can disregard the loss of one star. When we came back for our mud baths we were optimistic and excited. We enjoyed the end of the mud bath but the mud was FAR too hot and we were both very uncomfortable getting in. I actually spent much longer than my husband outside the bath because the heat was intolerable and I was worried my skin was going to burn with the hot mud stuck to it. Therefore, my actual "mud bath" was quite short because it took me quite some time to allow the mud to cool and actually get in. Having had other traditional mud baths since, I now know this was a problem with the facility/staff as we have never encountered this issue again, so unfortunately they lose another star. After we got cleaned up and ready for our massages, I was VERY upset when the therapists tried to separate my husband and I and took us into different rooms. I explained that we had a couples massage and they said they only had single rooms available. What??? I have to remove another star for this and I was really very upset at first, however, in retrospect, I actually enjoyed the massage quite a bit; it was one of the best I have had! I did not get the name of my therapist as I usually would because I was annoyed but my husband had a younger Caucasian male with blonde hair and I had an older darker skinned male who was just excellent and I feel like I enjoyed the massage enough that it almost made up for being separated from my husband. So if you are coming here solo and just for a massage, it's possible this place might end up being more of a 4 star visit for you... Obviously we had too many issues to return here and have opted to try other spas in the area instead.

The Baths entrance is behind the hotel entrance. Different driveway. Less attractive curb appeal.

I would not come back here. They asked me to come early so I could "get ready," but not only was there no place to actually get ready, there was nowhere to put my stuff. What kind of "spa" has no lockers and nowhere to put your belongings? When I say nowhere, I mean nowhere. So, if you come with a bag for the pool and Jacuzzi, you will be lugging that stuff around with you at the spa. There is no lounge area for you to relax and drink tea. It's just the front desk and a long hallway that has some bathrooms and massage rooms and the mud bath room. I expected a lot more of a luxurious atmosphere for $175 in services, especially because if you book at a nearby spa (like Moonacre), you get so much more for the same price. Another inconvenience was that I had to walk across the parking lot to get to the pools and hot tubs. It's just not a cute walk. It doesn't feel peaceful or serene or spa-like. You cross the parking lot, go past laundry room and bike rentals for the hotel, and then you are basically at the hotel pools, which happen to be super warm. How warm? I don't know because no one at the Baths lobby told me... just like no one told me about the lack of lockers (This is a theme.) So, after spending a little time at the pools, I have to go back to the spa to get ready for my mud bath. I change and have to lug my stuff into the bath room. It was a dark room, covered in dark tile, that had two regular porcelain bath tubs, two mud bath tubs, and two showers. I was worried they would bring someone else in there, but thankfully they did not. First, I got into the mud bath, which was an interesting experience. I kept trying to figure out what the smell was in the spa, and it turned out it was the mud. I mean, it's real mud. It smells like dirt and funky gases. So, I climb in, and it is thick. I have to wriggle my way down, and it gets hotter as you get in there, and then you have to find a way to bring your arms back out to cover yourself with the mud. And it gets into all your areas. There is hot water constantly running into the tub, which I presume cleanses it somehow, but I could not help but wonder who else sat in there. It's probably safe to say mud baths are not my thing. Once my time was up, the attendant for the mud room came in to let me know that it was time for me to shower and get into the regular bath tub for a soak. So, I climb out, and there is mud everywhere. The shower was great. I had plenty of time to get all the mud off and out and get into the bath, which she had turned on and started with bubbles. Except the bubbles never stopped. By the time my 15 or so minutes were up, the bubbles were all over the floor. I could not get comfortable in there because I had to keep pushing bubbles out of my face. It was not relaxing. Then, it was time to get ready for my massage. Of course, I needed to shower off again because of all those bubbles. Anyway, I got a mediocre massage, and the masseuse did not listen to what I wanted him to focus on. And the even weirder part is that he kept spraying me with some kind of essential oils or something. It was really jarring and totally took away from the vibe. I left the Roman Spa feeling completely unsatisfied and kind of like the victim of a bait-and-switch. They should be up front with people about what the experience is like and let people decide if that is the ambience they want.

I had to update this after reading some other reviews- I mean ya I would not say it's the most scenic or romantic atmosphere- you go and have an experience either you love it or hate it- I am slightly OCD so I would have liked to see more modern/ renovated - this location should mar upgrades - it's kinda like getting a shabby shack on the beach but who cares about the shack cause you at the beach right? The fact that yes it's been around for so long doesn't mean the cant spruce up the place , you would think with all the money coming in the would do some renovation-the oportunista is def there if they give the place TLC but due to it being an attraction I don't think they will -it is bland when you walk in I've been to spa where yes there is a hang out room and drink tea the only thing popping is the actual mud tub LOL the massage was great

What a fabulous experience with the Triple A! We started out with "A"ngie who took great care of us in the Roman Bath Room. She gave us great instructions, checked up on us to refill our cold water and made sure we were comfortable. Then for our massage, my hubby's masseuse was "A"ngela and he definitely enjoyed her expertise and dozed off three times! Lol. My masseuse was "A"lex who gave me the best deep tissue massage! He took all the knots away and I was so relaxed. We will be back here for our next visit! After our spa session, we ended up back in our room and dozed off like babies.

It was a wonderful escape, especially during the winter with their Olympic size mineral spring pool. It was/is magical to see the steam rising off the springs and looking up at the stars at night with my daughter. She was a stressed out middle schooler/high school student when we 1st discovered ISR. At the time, it was a little pricey, but something we could afford occasionally. Now, let's just say big buckets of money. My daughter is now a doctor and married, and she recently visited for the holidays. I looked for something special for a relaxing time because of holiday travel and their work lives. I was so lucky to speak to Eli to inquire about a 2 day stay. Out of all our visits I feel this was the friendliest conversation and pretty much booked it because of Eli. She booked at a very busy time my special requests. The rooms were very nice, clean & comfortable. I booked two rooms but did not want them side-by-side. Maybe just a couple of rooms apart but in the same building. Can you believe I had the nerve to ask this during the Christmas season? She not only did not laugh in my face, but she actually booked it perfectly. I have to say this is the first friendly and personal service I've ever received at Indian Springs. It is a very popular place so I will give them that. Thank you Eli for giving my family & I a very wonderful & relaxing memory. Best to you and Happy New year. P.S. They have free bikes on the property, but boy are they weird! I think I might've been nine years old when I've used handlebars like that.

The hotel is over 100 years old and it's maturity is part of its charm. There was some work being performed in a guestroom on the 2nd floor but they worked on it for short periods every day. Love the strategy. There is no insulation on guestroom doors so it's easy to hear conversations and heavy slamming doors. There is no elevator so the 2nd floor doesn't appear to be Accessible. There are rooms on the 1st level however. The jacuzzi was wonderful and hot Tuesday morning but lukewarm on Thursday morning. Front desk staff state every now and then a guest inadvertently turns it off, and did so Wednesday night by pressing the Emergency button (instead of the timer for the jets). Bummer. It took hours for it to reheat. Maybe a sign for the jets could discourage that from happening again. Check In & Staff: Male staff were friendly and helpful - especially Manny!! The hotel does have a luggage cart but it won't help those staying on the 2nd floor since there is no elevator. However 2 of the guys volunteered to follow me outside to the car to retrieve my luggage. Soooo much appreciated! They not only carried them upstairs to my room but came back to carry them again when I relocated to a different room. They wouldn't even except a tip! Thanks guys! My heros. Other staff: The female staff at the front desk wasn't as friendly but maybe she had an off couple days. No eye contact, acknowledgement, or smile. She did engage however when spoken to. All other staff - housekeeping (especially), maintenance, painters, etc., were genuinely friendly and helpful. It made my stay relaxing which was much needed! Thanks again. Breakfast: Staff prepare a daily breakfast tray that's delivered to each room at your preferred time. Breakfast consisted of FRESH and DELICIOUS breads, lemon cake, a tangerine, and a warm pot of mild-blend coffee. Room: Towels were fluffy, soft, good-smelling, and appeared new! The linen and robes were fresh and clean. The room was well furnished and the environment inviting. The bed was on the firm side but was very comfortable. I had to remember not to sit on the edge too long though because the ribbing on the edge of the mattress hurt. There was no bottled water in the room but there was a carafe to be filled with ice/water at the Hydration Station located on the 1st floor. It would have been nice to have a Station upstairs too or bottles of water for upstairs guests. Having a mini fridge and safe in the room was a nice touch. A microwave somewhere for guests (use) would have been nice for reheating leftovers. Window screens would have been nice to enjoy fresh air in the room without bugs. Bathtub stopper should probably be replaced because it was old, discolored, and soiled. Bathroom walls could use a little touch-up paint but none of those issues were big deal breakers for me. The things that could have definitely been better in the room were the loud bathroom fan (and the inability to turn it off independently from the light switch) and the hum from the mini fridge. The fridge clicks on/off 24/7, and at night when its quiet the hum is annoying. Glad I brought adapters for electronics since there are standard electrical outlets only, and no place to plug in USB cords. Check Out: Payment for your room is deducted from your credit card at the beginning of your stay when you check in. To check out you can drop your room keys in the box at the front desk. I chose to wait (10 minutes) for staff to return to the desk for a receipt. Value: I didn't visit the hotel spa this visit. However even with the Spring Special the hotel seems a bit overpriced, and without the spa is probably closer to a 3-star hotel. Caveat though is that everything in Calistoga appears to be overpriced - after all it's a resort town. Love the peace and tranquility though. Overall a really nice stay and I definitely recommend.

With peppy Art Deco décor and furnishings, the inn boasts a charming ambiance that takes guests back to the 1920's and 1930's era. We stayed on the second floor in Room 221, a chic bedchamber with nods to the early 20th century, furnished with a high-quality, comfortable bed, flat-screen television, espresso machine, fridge, and glassware for self-catering. HOTEL SERVICE: The front desk staff, especially Manny, was extremely friendly and helpful. One night, when I couldn't find unmetered parking, Manny assured me that parking overnight in the metered spaces along the front of the hotel on Lincoln Avenue would not trigger a citation, even during the metered times. Seeing that I was apprehensive to do this, he promised to cover the cost of a parking ticket, if I would receive one. He was right; the timed metered parking was not enforced the next day. The complimentary light coffeehouse-style continental breakfast with fresh coffee, tea, fruit, juice and pastries, delivered directly to our room each morning was also very nice. TRUE SPA CALISTOGA: The whimsical accoutrements continue in the spa. No showers, but small, private lockers with robes and slippers are assigned to each patron. Since we were staying at a spa hotel, we booked appointments for restorative spa experiences, for Thursday, the 22nd, at 2:00 PM. It was very convenient to stumble downstairs for facials and revitalizing body treatments + massages. Our appointments were for the Detox + Glow (90MIN) (BODY THERAPIES) package, a relaxing combination of upper body massage (neck, arms, and shoulders) paired with a facial focus using Blue Beautifly Organic Skincare alongside the Bentonite Clay Mud Mask to nourish the body and skin head to toe. 90 minutes for $280 included a fully body massage. I was assigned to technician Rosa Cisneros who was very nice. The sessions were soothing and relaxing; however, Mom and I were confused at the conclusion, thinking that we were still to receive a full body mud mask or wrap, as per the description of the Detox + Glow package. Due to no mud mask, we were given a 15% discount. VERDICT: Mount View Hotel & Spa is a charming establishment and perfect place to slow down time and enjoy a respite.
