James from Bates Fencing was hired by my neighbor who was intalling a new pool, I gave my neighbor perission to access my fence so that a small escavator could get into his backyard by removing some of the fence pannels in between both houses. In return the fence was replaced new at no cost to me and I was told my gate would also be replaced. Before the fence work started, I reached out to James in regards to upgrading my gate, James said, he would have to return the monies my neighbor that he paid for my gate because it wouldn't be fair for me to upgrade and I only pay the difference (not sure if that was legal). James wanted to charge me the entire price of a new fence if I was to upgrade. On the back side of my gate James used old wood as well as all of the old metal hardware not replacing it with anything new. After seeing my gate, I called James to ask why there were such gaps in my gate, Jame sent me pictures of my old gate showing me it was the same. Now James is saying that I tried to commit fraud because I questioned him, Seriously. I tried to open my gate only for the old boards used to secure the back side just falling to the ground down. The old boards are not secure and the bolts that are supposed to hold them in place are old and wobbly. I called James to let him know of this issue and he said my neighbor only paid for the pickets to be replaced. I was never given the option to upgrade to a whole new fence or told that the old wood and hardware (bolts) would be used. There was never any communication from James letting me know what was paid for nor was I given any information regarding my gate. I'm aware that my neighbor is the one who contracted Bates Fencing and James but I should have been addressed when It came to my property and gate. I should have been given the oppertunity to pay the difference to completely upgrade my fence enough so it wouldn't be falling apart. We contacted Bates Fencing for a challenging project in Valley Springs to enclose our yard for our dogs. Even though he was based in Lodi James came right over to see the job. Our home was built in 1995 and had never been fenced before due to the difficult terrain and rocky soil conditions. James came up with a creative plan at a competitive price. I would give Zero stars if I could... Lack of communication, poor quality of work. James Bates represents himself as the owner, he came out and wrote a quote. I signed and return later that evening. Per the contract it was to be a steel framed gate, 60/40 split with redwood pickets and completed in 2 days. I was to receive a phone call from his "fabricator" to schedule an on-site appointment to take specific measurements and discuss final plans. He never called and I found out after the fact he came to my house unannounced at a time I was not home. Not sure what he did. The following week on Wednesday several men showed up to remove the existing gate and place the two new posts and left. Thursday they returned and hung the steel frame panels. I came home to see, the frame was NOT 60/40 but 50/50 and the posts were not aligned for the gate to close properly. In addition there was no wood in the panels, debris left along the existing fence, tape left where they painted and we were told James would come on Saturday to put in the wood. I spoke to James by phone that night, who was argumentative and condescending the fabricator would be back to fix and clean up. He came on Saturday, took measurements to design the correct panels and said he'd be back on Monday. He came back, moved one of the posts to align properly, hung the two panels (with wood inserts) and cleaned up there mess. I returned home that night to see my house is painted black outline from the post that was painted. Also the newly moved post was secured by two bolts out of four that it should have been. Once again, I called James --- his question- how do I want to settle payment. I provided an option of mailing it or he could pick up - he opted for mailing. I told him I am unhappy with the outcome, the gate is wobbly, gaps in the wood slats, the black paint on my house and overall poor shotty job! His response - the fabricator will come and fix it all. He came, now my house is pained grey, another bolt add and no change to the stability of the gate. Now an important factor to remember is that James never showed his face after providing a quote he never came out to review the job performed or oversee any of the work or look at any of the issues I was bringing to his attention. His check was mailed as he requested and I have since advised him, he is not to be on my property or any representative of his company. I will be hiring a professional painting company to match the paint and paint the section of my house they damaged and will provide him a receipt for reimbursement. I will also file a complaint with the State Contractors Licensing Board and the Better Business Bureau. If he chooses not to reimburse me, I will be filing a Smalls Claim Action. And for anyone interested I was charged $150 a foot for 13 foot opening; consistent with other companies. read more

I phoned James a couple years ago to check out a "dreaming" gate issuer at a rental property. He was there within the hour, had a plan to resolve the issue and repaired it by the end of the HOT HOT said meet day. I called him again about the fence in our back yard that had been weakened by the previous winter storms. James was at my house within a couple hours. Again -he had the answer I had hoped for...he didn't have to tear down the fence and build a new one either! He had a brilliant and aesthetically pleasing idea to repair the fence.
