This is possibly the cleanest restaurant in the state of Indiana! I could not find a speck of dust. Even the bathroom was spotless. (See photo below.) The food was very tasty. I loved the pasta. The lavender cookie is a must try. The subtle hint of lavender in the shortbread cookie just takes you to a peaceful place. The service was good. My only complaint was the server never ask if we wanted a refill on our drinks. The food was brought promptly. The gentleman who took my reservations over the phone, was above par. He was very friendly and very accommodating. I appreciated his willingness to work with our request, as I was coming from Indianapolis. This is definitely a place you can go to get a nice lunch and really feel at ease and peaceful. No cell phones here. They request you keep them away and enjoy your environment. This place is a super cute spot for lunch! The atmosphere is very relaxing, you have to silence your phone and not take phone calls at your table. The tables nice and the decor is very fun and bright. They do not have high chairs or booster seats. We had one with us anyway so it wasn't a big deal, but if you plan on going with a small child be aware so you don't have to have them on your lap the whole time. The outside is very pretty and feels very much like a lodge. Its located super close to the Muscatatuck National Wildlife Refuge so it makes a great stop for lunch before, or during, your hiking adventures. When you are done eating there is a fun little gift shop/store that has a lot of different things to purchase, but only a small selection of "Batar" specific items like shirts and mugs. We bought some very nice candy from the little candy shop they have and wish we would have gotten some of the tasty rice crispy treats they had. Looking forward to going back! read more

My mother, aunt, sister, niece, and I had such a lovely girls afternoon out here. We live in Louisville so it was a little bit of a hike to get here, but it was well worth it. We made a reservation as I have read that this place fills up fast. The restaurant is nestled back in a wooded area with cute little gardens surrounding. We had to wait just a few minutes (we got there early just in case) while they got our table ready for us. This gave us a little bit of time to walk around their store and a small sweets shop. We were seated in what I would consider the best table! It was a round table tucked back in a gazebo-like private room lined with windows looking out onto the garden. Perfect for our little party! I had the soup and sandwich combo with the turkey club and their soup special that day, broccoli cheddar. Everything was very tasty! We also tried the apple dumpling and blackberry cobbler, both super yummy! After lunch we had a great time walking around their property and gardens! read more

This is a darling place I discovered by accident on my way to the nearby nature preserve. The sign near the highway gives no indication of what Batar is. Decided to pop in after some cursory internet searching and was pleasantly surprised. It's a brunch place that is decorated adorably. It's a perfect place to take your mom to lunch. Serves typical cafe food such as chicken salad, sandwiches, soups and salads. Everything I've eaten here is good. The fruit tea is delicious. It's a mix of tea and fruit juice. I've been there twice for lunch and the wait staff is always pleasant. Batar also has a small gift shop area with tea sets, cookies, etc. for sale. Worth the stop and glad I was curious enough to explore. Be aware that it does close for the winter season and is closed on Sundays. Also guests have to silence their cell phones which results in a relaxing atmosphere. Wish more restaurants had that policy. read more

What a wonderful surprise discovering this beautifully secluded restaurant near Seymour. The restaurant is just over 2 miles from the Seymour interstate exit (east) and is nestled against the Muscatatuck Wildlife Refuge. Large pine trees line the gravel driveway that leads to a parking area. Then just a short walk leads you to this small ranch style restaurant surrounded by flowers and gardens. Inside the entrance, there are alcoves of items for sale. Inside the lobby, there is Batar Sweets where they sell candy and chocolates. It also has the cashier where you pay for any items, including your meals. I was seated in the rear dining room called the Red Geranium room. Red and white tablecloths and red and green flowers throughout the room make for a welcoming space considering the windows overlooking the woods and gardens. I ordered the Batar Chicken Salad which is deliciously served on a Croissant with thick sliced ripe red tomato and crisp green leaf lettuce on the side. It also comes with a dill pickle spear and some crisp potato chips. One of the best chicken salad sandwiches I've had! It's so good, they sell it by the pound near the cashier! The service was very friendly at the cashier, the waitress, and the woman who was handling the Sweets counter. Everyone was greeted and treated like a friend. It seemed as though a lot of folks were regulars because of the friendly atmosphere. Oh, and the sweets? I got a butterfly shaped sugar cookie and a frosting painted lavendar cookie. Both were excellent! I also picked up a small box of chocolates. I went with a box of four and selected the Key Lime, the Strawberry Caramel, the Dark Chocolate Raspberry, and the Mint Pie. All were delicious! I made sure to take time to walk around the gardens and lawn area under the large pines. If you can get here during the blooming months, you will get a lot more out of your visit than during the winter. It is so peaceful and inviting. Definitely bookmark this place. There are two parts to this review: the space and ambiance, and the food, Laura was our server and she did ok, After I told her about how disappointed we were with the food, she appeared less. The ambiance is wonderful. The cafe is on very pleasant wooded grounds abutting the Muscatatuck National Wildlife Refuge. They do serve on Wedgewood plates. The food, however, is atrocious. My Reuben was preprocessed meat product, presliced and completely uniform. The sauce was High Fructose Corn Syrup 1000 Island dressing. For dessert, my wife ordered the "homemade apple dumpling with whipped cream". The apples were canned and the "whipped cream" was non-dairy that came in a bag from Gordon Food Service, as reported by Laura. I am so agitated by the poor quality of the food that I cannot scream loud enough "STAY AWAY"/ BTW, for 2, with tip, it was $30. However, if this cafe were to embrace good quality ingredients, organic and local, they could attract clientele from a 100 mile radius. The current customer base is 70+ women who don't know and don't care what good food is. If Batar want to survive, they need to up their food game, because Seymour is a food desert. read more

Ignore the earlier negative review-service was great, food wonderful, and 3adults with entrees, drinks, and desserts was only $46. If you're looking for a place to enjoy a relaxing, unhurried lunch - this is the place to go! The setting in the woods is so peaceful, and they have a lot of bird feeders in the garden - makes for an amazing aviary. That's just the atmosphere. The menu has mostly lighter lunch fare and some amazing desserts. I've been there just to indulge in the Chocolate Raspberry cake! They have somewhat limited hours and are closed during the winter months, but it's worth planning ahead and putting on your calendar. Nice the see that they now have a website so you can check out weekly specials and other stuff they offer. I like places that don't stagnate - last year they added a sweet shop. What a cool (and yummy!) update! You don't go to Batar for a quick lunch during your workday - you go there when you want/need to kick back. read more

This quaint little restaurant/ gift shop is out in the woods. It is all girlie, with red and white decor, accented by a cherries theme. All tastefully done. The Red Hat Ladies often meet here. The food is good. I had a cup of broccoli cheese soup and a half sandwich which was a ruben. The soup was hot, the sandwich was not. There are paper doilies on the table for a place mat on a white tablecloth. You can look out into the wooded area and watch the wildlife. They even put a pair of binoculars on the window sill for you. The staff is nice and they all wear the same kind of bib apron. There are no cell phones allowed and one lady got told to walk outside because hers went off. I giggled. The owner is serious about that. After we looked at the gift shop we walked next door to the music museum. There is every year of Life magazine and about 30 or 40 different pianos and organs. Very interesting. Today was the third time friends and I have eaten at Batar! Less than happy today with the whole drink thing! First time we went we had the orange lemonade and I had a few refills! Second time we were there I was told only 1 refill of the specialty tea was allowed! Third time we were told no refills on the specialty tea so I got the regular tea! When we were leaving I asked for a tea to go and I was told there would be a charge for that! I have never been to a place so chintzy with the drinks especially when they sell different teas there! I had a cup of soup and a salad with chicken on it and my bill was over $16.00! How the heck can you not give tea refills? Won't be back! Ridiculous! read more

The atmosphere is bright and very clean. The food is just okay. The portion size would probably be sufficient if you were dieting or not very hungry. I would actually have been ashamed to serve the salad I received. It was a small bowl of iceberg lettuce with tomato and cheese. You can buy bagged salad mixes that look better.
