Walked into the bar as our first bar of the night and went to the bathroom together cause we had to use it... got kicked out immediately cause more than one person was not "allowed" in the bathroom at a time. Nothing in the bar notated that, nor is that the norm in a gay bar. Immediately got escorted out and customers yelled at us asking if we were having sex. Obviously we were not. We came here on a Friday night and it was good bar and everyone seems to be local Internet as far as not feeling like you're strangers. As a relatively new Missourian, I've become quite fond of frequenting the local neighborhood dive bars. You really need to have realistic expectations when visiting any dive bar...Dive bars are hole-in-the-wall, unpretentious establishments where the floors are always sticky and the bathrooms' sanitation are questionable. They're generally filled with locals and regulars, but these individuals are more often than not friendly and open to meeting new people. I was at Bastille this previous Monday and was tended to immediately after settling down at the bar. I have no complaints about the two drinks I had here. The bartender was kind and informed us of the impending drag show that was planned for later that evening. The drag show was fun and an unexpected find for a Monday night in STL. I made conversation with people at the bar, who seemed receptive to a random stranger talking to them. I would come back if someone invited me, but for now, I must visit the other dive bars in town. 6/21/21: Stopped in again and the same bar staff was there. I believe they recognized me from my previous visit, which was a nice feeling (as if I'm slowly becoming a regular!) I paid for drinks this time and the tab was much more affordable then other local bars. Bastille is quickly becoming on of my top favorites for the drinks and kind staff. read more

I recently won a $25 bar tab to Bastille. I had only been to this gay bar once before, so we decided to check it out again after a fun brunch. My biggest takeaway from my experience is that you just have to take Bastille for what it is... a neighborhood dive bar. The drinks are cheap and strong. The bartender was friendly to the "regulars" and tolerated our group being there. If you are looking for a night of craft cocktails and well curated music, Bastille is not for you. Now I will say, we went in just looking to have a fun time, and we did! The decor inside is so insane and gives you a ton to talk about with your friends. My personal favorite was the holographic photo of Cher that changed hair color depending on which way you were looking at it. The bar did feel dirty. I kept my mask on the majority of the time to protect myself. For the most part the patrons were not well socially distanced. read more

Bastille is such a great bar in Soulard and I love visiting it from time to time. Drinks are pretty cheap and the service is always fabulous! On my last visit my friends and I opted to sit outside on their sidewalk patio in order to enjoy the warm weather. Our server even added an umbrella to our table in order to help shade off some of the sun for those who didn't want the direct sunlight. They also have a game room in the back with darts and a pool table for those of you who like that kind of stuff. As for me, I prefer to sit back and enjoy a drink while chatting with my friends. read more

Oh what does a girl like better than being told she's fabulous all night long. This happens to me every time I go to The Bastille. Actually, this happens every time I go to a gay bar, but I especially like the crowd at this bar. Everyone here is incredibly friendly and it's not bombarded with the young, club scene types. The crowd is a little older, which means the bar is not obnoxiously loud or abrasive. It's a very kitchy place as well. Tons of cute things covering the walls and an interesting lighting scheme above the bar make the environment a fun place to hang out. I have never thought the drinks were so expensive, but perhaps that is only because I end up here after being at The Shanti which is notoriously the most expensive bar in Soulard. The brunette/gray haired bartender with the BAD attitude really needs to go back to school. I asked for an manhattan, this guy built everything in a plastic cup, no no correct measure, used a ton of bourbon a gross amount of sweet vermouth used his dirty hands to pick out a cherry, then poured old cherry juice into the drink. No mixing what do ever. I used to love this place but seriously. The cocktail was nasty and poorly done. I'm also a mixologist in NYC so I know what I'm looking for and this dude clearly did not understand the assignment. also, accourding to google the place closes at 1:30am. Bastille is a great neighborhood bar in Soulard. Very casual and low key. It is a gay bar, but as far as gay bars go, it is one of the most hetero-friendly in town and funny enough, I have several girl friends who have met their straight boyfriends at Bastille. Drinks are poured heavy here, so walk or get a cab when you leave. Karaoke Wednesdays are a hoot. read more

When I first moved to St. Louis, I heard that Bastille was one of the premiere gay night spots in the city. Being a woman, sometimes I love to hit up gay bars because there's absolutely no way I'm going to get hit on and I can drink with my girlfriends in peace. Peace is definitely what you'll find at Bastille. Its super dark with lots of fun decorations on the walls (think pez dispensers and action figures) and offers unassuming bar food goodness like your standard burgers, salads, and fried goodies. Drinks here can be a bit more expensive than other places in Soulard, but if you're looking for a fun place to go in Soulard, regardless of your orientation you'll have a good time at Bastille. Absolutely everyone can come inside... What a blast! Went in on a Monday night and had the extra treat of seeing the weekly drag show, which was a riot! Where else could you see renditions of "My Vagina is 8 Miles Wide", followed by "Me Na Me Na" and "Poor Unfortunate Souls"? I dare you to have an answer! I went here for a friend's birthday on a Wednesday. It also happened to be Karaoke night, which a fan I am not. However that being said the DJ would play Top 40 songs after a couple of Karaoke songs. The drinks were good and even the bartenders got in on the Karaoke action. If you want to dance though, I recommend other places, this is definitely a Karaoke bar. read more

I stumbled upon this Little cozy bar after my Budweiser Factory tour. Very friendly owner and staff as well as other patrons. We are an older couple (50s) who were in St. Louis for a quick weekend trip visiting Sweetie Pie's, City Diner, 1111, Sts. Peter and Paul Church and other sites. We had looked on-line for suggestions for LGBT night spots but we're not really into the dance clubs. Nothing wrong with them, just not our interest anymore. We read about this club on line and decided to give it a shot after a wonderful dinner at 1111. It's a small joint in the cool Soulard neighborhood. Crowded, loud, smoky, great music, hoppin' staff and fun atmosphere. We nursed our drinks in the back pool room and met a straight couple and had a fun chat for a while. We stayed for a couple drinks and then left about 11:30 pm as we had an early morning. All-in-all, we found the crowd to be friendly enough and the staff to be attentive and quick to serve and polite. Prices were reasonable too. Some folks may find it too smoky and loud. I don't really mind that for a little bit. It's fun to get out occasionally and be around a lot of youthful activity and mirth! read more

I (heart) the Soulard Bastille. It's such an unpretentious, funky, cool place to grab a generously portioned, reasonably priced cocktail. It's a great place for folks new to St. Louis who don't know a lot of people. Everyone is really friendly and very welcoming. The scene here is pretty low-key and, if it were not right on the very corner of Russell & Menard, I'd say it's almost off-the-radar. Most of the bartenders are very friendly and fun to chat with... Music in the bar is either selected by patrons at the jukebox or, when nobody is selecting, one of the local radio stations. Admittedly, it's kind of strange to hear a traffic report between songs in a bar, but... just part of the 'charm' of the place. The décor, as mentioned by others, is kitschy and becomes even more interesting after a couple of their well-poured cocktails.
