    Chicken Parmigiano
    Emma E.

TLDR: the good (Fresh pasta, big portions, good pesto sauce, well cooked chicken, lots of options and nice staff) the bad (high prices, slightly watery sauces, boring red sauce, food comes in takeout containers). Overall, food is a 3.5/5, rounding up bc I enjoyed it and think they deserve higher than a 2 star average. okay so background i am really picky and also was so scared to eat here bc of the bad reviews. I think either 1) we got them on a less busy night so our food wasn't rushed 2) there aren't enough reviews to go off of right now or 3) their management took feedback and had corrected issues. Either way, I was pleased with their food and I'd eat here again. I got the chicken pesto pasta and they have 6 different types of pasta you can pick from: macaroni, large elbow noodles, cavatappi, linguine, fettuccine and spaghetti. Not sure where the reviews came from that said "boxed spaghetti" bc this place does fresh pasta... and it's good! The pesto sauce was creamy and delicious. It says on the board that the pesto has dairy in it so not sure why another review complained about it being pesto cream... the chicken was a ~bit~ on the dry side but overall pretty solid, and there was lots of it! The portion sizes are large, which is good bc their food is kinda expensive. But that's now normal for 1) Charlottesville and 2) dairy market specifically. Their staff was super nice and the food comes in a takeout box which I think is convenient so they don't have to do dishes and so you can immediately take home leftovers. The cannoli I had was average and my friend said his chicken parm is good. The red sauce didn't look very fancy, just standard deal there. Service is super quick and the staff are very nice. Overall the sauces could've been a little thicker and more complex, but it comes so hot and fresh that it may need to sit to tighten up some. The pasta was well cooked and the chicken was seasoned and also well done. Prices are a bit high but overall not too bad. I'd eat here again and if you're in the mood for pasta I'd encourage you to try it out!

    Bland, discolored tiramisu for $5
    Louisa C.

I walked up to this counter because of the beautiful looking deserts in the case. The tiramisu looked amazing so I ordered it. One small piece for $5. After I paid for it, the cashier handed me a piece that had already been boxed. It looked completely different than the one in the case. The cocoa powder on top was black instead of brown. Instead of returning it, I tried it. It was bland, tasted like air. I'm unimpressed and disappointed. Don't waste your money

The pasta was really tasty and the vodka sauce was good but a little watery. Staff was nice and fast.

    Chicken Alfredo

ussin rating: 1/10. the high prices for the food quality is insane. the sauce was watery, the chicken was bland and gray-looking. unsure what the pasta shape was but it was over cooked. this is not chicken alfredo. i can get better chicken alfredo at olive garden for cheaper.

It has already assumed the shape of the tin.

There are…read moreabout a dozen different types of pasta and 1/2 a dozen sauces, lots of great vegetarian and meaty options! I love how they are at different farmers markets as I can go after work at the Penn Quarter market or catch them over the weekend near me around Falls Church, Mosaic District, and Reston. Come early because they sell out quick! I highly recommend the prepackaged Eggplant Parm, Pesto and Artichoke Cannelloni, and Marinara Spinach and Cheese Cannelloni, Spinach Tagliatelle, Cheese Pansiotti. The only dishes I don't recommend are the Gnocchi (difficult to cook), Thin Tagliatelle (thicker is better and easier to cook), and Pesto Sauce (too thick). My favorite dishes are the prepackaged baked Eggplant Parm, Pesto and Artichoke Cannelloni, and Marinara Spinach and Cheese Cannelloni. I love tossing them into the oven and within 30 minutes, viola! A delicious pipping hot Italian dish bursting with flavor. I really like how they are fail safe - you don't have to worry about overcooking pasta or buying sauce, cheese,or additional ingredients. Everything is included and those dishes are the best bang for your buck! When I'm not feeling lazy, I love cooking the fresh homemade pasta particularly the Spinach Tagliatelle and Cheese Pansiotti. The pasta is really soft and tender, it cooks al dente in a couple of minutes. It's really easy to over cook the pasta as I've done this a few times particularly for the thinner pastas. The Spinach Tagliatelle is unique pasta and thicker than fettuccine. As the spinach tagliatelli is hard to find and a top seller, I'm lucky if I get a chance to buy it before its sells out (keeping fingers crossed!) Of all the fresh pastas, the Tagliatelle has the largest serving and goes well with pesto. I really like the Cheese Pansiotti, a large ravioli stuffed with cheese and subtle garlic flavor that melts in your mouth and goes with ragu or marinara sauce. I wasn't a big of a fan of the thin tagliatelli, which is like spaghetti/bucatini, or the mini ravioli. I prefer the larger pastas. If you haven't cooked Gnocchi before, I don't recommend purchasing it. You need to cook it in under 30 seconds, I waited an extra 30 seconds and it turned into mush! To add insult to injury, I blended in the pesto sauce, which turned into mashed potato! I ended up throwing out the meal, $35 literally down the drain. Although the Pesto sauce is tasty, it comes frozen and very thick and difficult to blend in with the pasta. I recommend using it as a spread for sandwiches rather than for the pasta. I used the pesto for the thin tagliatelle, it was really hard to blend in and made the pasta congeal and clump together. The pesto sauce isn't worth $18. If you are going to eat the pasta within a week, I recommend just refrigerating them as they keep well. I don't recommend freezing the pasta as it tends to stick together. The pasta also keeps well after you cook or bake it. The pasta were good after a week. I gone to several farmers markets just to get Cavanna Pasta, they are that tasty and delicious! Their homemade pasta take me back to Italy.

I found pappardelle at Dal Grano's once and that says all you need to know. Papardelle are wide,…read moresoft, flat pasta noodles that I first had in Rome decades ago. Growing up Italian stateside, I never knew about this light, wavy pasta dish. So pappardelle pasta is like some rare delicacy and I love it. This pasta dish is not easy to find unless it has been popularized in the Italian dining scene, recently. How can I explain this pasta? Papardelle are not thick like butter noodles, but instead they are thin yet wide. And at Dal Grano's, they must be experienced to be savoured. Do call ahead, because they might just have them made. Dal Grano's is a neighborhood place. We love how when you are dining, they actually talk to you and are friendly. There are a few other places around Mclean proper which I wish were more overtly warm and hospitable, in this way. All of Dal Grano's pasta is homemade and delicious. It's definitely great for carryout pasta or a diner-style environment with a homemade pasta lunch or dinner. I don't think they deliver or work with any of the delivery services. You just call and pickup. The butternut squash ravioli is tender and flavorful. We have probably have gotten different versions of their ravioli every time. Outside of the papardelle, I'm all in for their rich squid ink pasta when it's made. I don't go there enough to know if it's always available. They have over 50 homemade pasta combinations to choose from and a big freezer case of food to take home. My biggest issue with Dal Grano's is when I see all of the pastas in the serving bowls presented to order and cook, I want to buy them all at once. I know it sounds tacky, but they make me yearn for a pasta buffet there just so that I can taste all of the variations. Alas, if we were in town more we'd just need to go more often to taste all of their selection. There's only one other restaurant that does Italian this well and it's around 15 minutes away in Falls Church. But even that fabulous Italian restaurant does not compare with the amount and selection of homemade pastas at Dal Grano's.

Other delicious and unique flavors I've enjoyed are the basil gnochetti and the porcini bucatini. I once got their white bolognese sauce and paired it with one of their pastas, it was divine. They have cute postcards with pasta sauce recipes, but you can also buy their incredible pasta sauces and pair it with the pasta you buy (which I highly recommend).
