While exhausting, I feel well prepared for this part of the practical and strongly recommend Mike Shiflett / CFI Bootcamp. CFI Bootcamp is not a "diploma mill". Mike's oft-stated goal is to make you a competent instructor with an eye to the eventual checkride. This approach pays off. During the week I was there, three students took the practical and all three passed. The CFI Bootcamp maneuvers lesson plans, regulation overviews, endorsements guides and FOI materials are understandable and professional. They have curated FAA documents and publications, from handbooks to relevant AC's and legal opinions, into one place. Beyond that Mike provided important "inside baseball" on how the industry works, how to set student expectations while keeping them motivated and how to practically run the small business called being a CFI. Bottom line: Getting this rating is hard work, but CFI Bootcamp made it a better experience and, I believe, increased my odds of a first time pass.

I understand that the club has its own policies regarding club entry and has every right to choose its entry process, this is more of a personal opinion on that. Because you need to do multiple scenarios, that will pretty much equate to multiple flights with an instructor which can add up a lot of capital. This can be a pretty large barrier for those that do not have the healthiest finances. Aviation itself is already super expensive. My previous club consisted of one ground and one flight. Which would be around 500-600 dollars total. This club costed me about 2000 dollars for the flights I had to do to get checked out. They have multiple scenarios, which some should be combined. Scenario A- Flight proficiency in aircraft Scenario B- Bay Area flight operations Scenario C- Mini XC flight Scenario D- IFR Flight A and B should be combined. Scenario C is just another money grabber for the company completely unnecessary since Scenario B would show your proficiency in flight operations ADM, risk management, etc. From my previous club which is one of the largest in the world with a good safety record has a better checkout process. They are efficient and are aware of cost barriers. So they would combine multiple scenarios into one flight as opposed to separating it into multiple flights/scenarios such as this club. In that club we did one flight to one airport and on the way would perform the required maneuvers, diversions, emergencies, etc. Every member might have had a different experience than mine when entering this club, but this is from my point of view. Scenarios A, B, and D make sense to me, C is completely unnecessary. Other than the rigorous checkout process, the staff and instructors are very nice, the largest downside was the cost to get checked out due to multiple scenarios.

I was hooked after the demo flight, and am currently 3 months into my training. SCFC has easy freeway access, and is great for both San Francisco and Penninsula folks. The staff there is super friendly and knowledgeable. The CFIs all seem to have full student lists and the ground instructors and senior pilots are top notch. There is a diverse fleet of planes and simulators available for members to rent and for students to use during instruction. The ground school offers two classes per week to accommodate people's varying schedules. Thanks to my ground instructor Herb and everyone at SCFC, I just passed my written test with a 92%! SCFC member for life.

Very time-consuming and expensive with respect to the quality of their training. They don't let you get your PPL here. There are some good instructors here which is why I'm giving 3 stars, but there's also some really terrible instructors. I flew here a year and didn't make ANY progress except getting to the solo. Waste of my time and money. I recommend looking into a different flight school.

The first thing the school did was try to shed any blame off themselves by suggesting/speculating intentional pilot actions. Their airplane that crashed, N5203H, was also previously totalled in 2016 but they kept flying it anyways. If you love life and care about your loved ones, I'd avoid this school. There are plenty of other schools that won't turn their back on you if you have an accident.

Understand that less than 20% of students actually achieve their PPL. The challenges are cost, availability of instructors and planes, weather, instructor objectives, personal availability, and other minor obstacles. Instruction quality can be both lacking or superior depending on who is teaching. If your goal is to get your PPL quickly, a flight school is a bad choice. Do some research before you decide. I didn't and I've spent over 4 years, $90K, and have had 5 instructors in pursuit of my PPL. If you're not in a rush and are just curious, it will work for you. It isn't easy and requires commitment. Get some guidance and explore the alternatives. Instructors have to complete your training and sign you off for your check ride. If they leave for better opportunities, you have to start over. At $300 and hour for rental and instructor cost, it gets expensive fast.
