I've been taking introductory lessons from Mei at KaiXin for almost four months, and highly recommend them. My class is small, and we all get a lot of practice in a supportive environment. The lessons are well-paced and mix things up, so it doesn't feel like an onslaught of grammar or vocabulary - we practice by asking and answering questions and reading aloud, but also with different language games and little skits. Mei is a really fun teacher! I've been enrolled for a few months and I think this class takes a great approach to learning Chinese. What we've focused on is using pinyin to learn grammar. Along with that we focus on speaking which has allowed us to get to the point of speaking basic conversations with each other. The class size is small ( less than 4 people) which gives everyone plenty of space to contribute to class. I studied Mandarin with Mei when she was teaching at ILSC. She was such an effective teacher that I decided to follow her when she started her own school. Right now I am taking private lessons two times a week in preparation for a trip to Taiwan. Through a combination of customized lessons and active role-playing, Mei is helping me improve my speaking and listening skills and making me feel more relaxed about interacting in unscripted situations. Already after just three lessons, I feel more confident and more comfortable speaking Mandarin. Looking for a tutor/teacher/Chinese class is hard. There are lots of things available, such as SFSU, CCSF, and other private colleges. They all suck in comparison to KaiXin. Mei runs KaiXin, and teaches all the classes herself. She's Shanghai-nese, completely fluent in English, and formally trained in Teaching and Chinese Literature. When I signed up I hadn't taken a Chinese class in three years, but after a private class with her she knew where to place me, and I've been having a great time learning. Class sizes are very small. I believe the biggest class she has is the beginner one, with at most 6 people. One on One attention happens often, and classes are warm and fun, not rote repetition. Mei uses modern learning techniques, encouraging supplemental studying with tools such as Anki, Podcasts, etc. She has a great grasp of using technology to assist with education. Best of all, her classes are affordable. Rather than signing up for a large commitment from SFSU/CCSF (~$1000 for a 30 person class!), her classes are small, modular, and good value. I began taking classes with KaiXin (Mei) about 3 months ago mostly for work, but also because I'm beginning to travel to China for fun a bit more. After trying to learn Mandarin through multiple sources (i.e. Rosetta Stone, etc) the small classroom learning and back and forth needed when learning a new language is done extremely well at KaiXin. I took basic level Chinese coursework with WeiJen. She is a great teacher. The difficulty and amount of content is just right for what feels like optimal learning. Each interactive lecture is a mix of review and new material. The textbook, Chit Chat Chinese, seems good and is supplemented with additional vocab relevant to current events and life in the Bay Area. There are homework and quizzes, which are fairly low-key, so you get out of it what you put in. I will continue to take Chinese courses from KaiXin Language School. read more

I just started a month ago as an almost complete novice with Mandarin and now can say a variety of things. This is the seventh or eighth language (or more...) that I've studied formally and I have to say this is the best intro language learning experience I've ever had. I've also had formal training as a foreign language instructor and have to say this class must have been the ideal they were striving for in that instruction. Mei is a really good teacher - she explains things in detail, manages to review things with her students and do new things in just the right balance to keep the material fresh and she has a great sense of humor. She's very encouraging and has a classroom where you don't feel intimidated or shy. Her chosen textbook is reasonably priced and well thought out in its pedagogy. So seriously, if you want to learn Mandarin, don't pay the stupid amounts for CCSF and fight for the limited class space - this is a much better deal and a lot more fun. read more

When it comes to language, I'm pretty awful. So when I was looking for a language school to help me break through my challenges, KaiXin was at the top of my list because their approach makes learning a language easy and fun. Mei and her staff are wonderful. They really helped me understand the basics in a way that was simple to understand. I never normally write Yelp reviews, but KaiXin has been so great that Mei and Chloe deserve it! I started learning Mandarin a couple of years ago. First with Rosetta Stone, then Fluenz and then MindSnacks. But every time I gave up after a few weeks or months. Nothing compares to having a real person teach you. The ability to ask one-off questions is irreplaceable and Chloe often tells stories to make the explanations fun, and to give us some cultural insights. The free beer for good work is a nice motivation too ;) The pacing of the class is good, even if you work full time. A couple of hours a week outside of class is all you need to move at a semi-reasonable pace. The structure makes sense and the teachers are flexible to go off course a little bit to help you understand specific things or to keep you interested in the stuff you care most about. We've also done fun things outside of the class such as karaoke and dim sum... because they are just fun peeps to hang out with :) I can't wait to see where I'm at in a few months time! read more

I highly recommend KaiXin if you're looking to learn Mandarin for a reasonable price and in a casual, conversational setting. I started as a near-beginner over a year ago, and I've since learned a great deal by attending Mei's twice-weekly group classes, which I look forward to attending even after a long day at work. The group setting helps to make classes engaging and fun, because Mei and the other teachers try hard to pick interesting topics for class discussion and to create a relaxed atmosphere in which people feel comfortable speaking and asking questions. Mei is a patient teacher who has no problem repeating something more slowly and gently correcting your pronunciation. Her classes largely rely on pinyin, but the material typically includes both simplified and traditional characters, so you can also learn to read and write if you want. KaiXin also occasionally holds social gatherings and outings, like a recent hotpot outing and a Halloween party last year. These events are a nice way to meet and get to know other students and generally just have some fun. It's a bonus that the location is excellent - it's downtown and very easy to get to and from KaiXin by BART and Muni. read more

We looked all over for a tutor for my high school daughter. Thank goodness we found KaiXin! Yuan Yuan is so warm and encouraging. My daughter learns new grammar each time and they practice using it in conversation. The topics they've learned like, the weather, eating out, asking for directions are very practical. They speak mainly Chinese in class, but Yuan Yuan's English is excellent in case something needs an explanation My daughter is now smiling after Chinese class something that never happened in high school. I've been taking Chinese Mandarin classes for five months now and love this school. Mei is a fantastic teacher! She is very organized, her tone and accent are precise, and her English is excellent (so she can explain the nuances in meaning and cultural references). Each class has a clear lesson plan that includes speaking practice, learning new grammar/vocabulary, and written practice (in pinyin at first, and then chinese characters for advanced students). AND did I mention that she makes it FUN?? Class is always fun, and Mei plans lots of group activities outside of class to meet other students and practice Chinese. The location is super convenient. "You're going to take Mandarin classes? Why would you pick one of the most difficult languages to learn?" This was usually the reaction I received after telling friends I had signed up for Mandarin class (thanks for the support, guys!). Needless to say I was a bit apprehensive when first entering KaiXin's doors, even after reading the great reviews. It's been three months now, I've just finished the Basic level III class...and I've signed up for Basic IV. I look forward to class every week! Having zero experience with Mandarin I began with Basic I taught by the school owner, Mei. The class size had about 6 people (I think that's the average class size) which allowed for a casual atmosphere and equal opportunity for each student to participate in class exercises. Mei is a great teacher. With each lesson, she provides context on what you're learning and then presents the information in digestible, logical, and simple chunks. Students have the opportunity to practice in class working on exercises as a group or with a student partner. Mei is also about having fun and ensuring her students enjoy learning. She often arranges group activities, outside of class, for all students and fellow teachers to participate and meet each other. While I haven't had classes with other teachers at KaiXin, all seem to reflect Mei's perspective and approach on teaching. I'm enjoying my experience learning Mandarin even more than I had anticipated. I do advise that you'll get the most out of class if you keep up with the homework and study at least 15 minutes a day. You won't get pressured to do so...but at the end of the day, what you get out of it is about what effort you put into it. Oh, and KaiXin has added a Beginners Spanish class! I loved taking my introduction to Mandarin class here. It really got me interested in continuing to learn Mandarin. Mei was awesome to work with , and Joana was a good teacher. I'd give this place 5 stars if not for the fact that I found it difficult to continue to take continuation classes here. I envisioned going through each of the 4 levels of the 3 difficulties. Unfortunately that is really dependent on how many of the other students stay on and also continue with you. If there are not enough people for the class, then the class does not happen, and your only options are to either wait and hope another class comes around in a few months with enough people, or to take a private lesson. This is because the classes are really small -- like 3 to 6 people small, and they need a minimum to make it feasible for them to even put it on. It's still a bummer because I was hoping to go all the way without a break in studies. I think this is a great place to go for private lessons if you can afford it (they aren't THAT expensive but they are more expensive than group class). It's also a great place if you're going to China and need to learn some words to get around, or if you're trying to refresh your Mandarin, or see if you are interested in it period. It's just that until something changes with the unpredictability of the next level classes being available ,I am not sure it would be a good long term group study place. read more

I was looking for good mandarin course in SF and because of good review in Yelp, I choose this one. Im very happy that I did it. Classes are very nice in a good atmosphere and Mei is wonderful teacher. She is funny, know how to teach and explain things very well and she is patient. You learn there useful words and sentences so you will be able to communicate in Mandarin very fast. In classes the most important thing is pinyin, but if you want you can learn characters as well. Mei laoshi gives in her worksheets two types of characters - traditional and simplified. So if you thinking about going to Taiwan this course is also good for you :). 谢谢老师 你是一位很好的老师！ read more

I have been taking Chinese lessons at KaiXin Language School for a little over a month now. During my time here, I've had a great experience learning and conversing with my teacher, Ju, during our private lessons. Ju has done a great job of breaking down Chinese grammar rules, and providing enough repetition throughout our lessons to really drive points home. Luckily, she does it in an interesting enough manner where it does not feel repetitive. The beginner Mandarin classes are in a small group setting (my class was six people) and Mei goes out of her way to make the class comfortable and social. Wo ai KaiXin (I love KaiXin)! Ive been studying Mandarin at KaiXin for 3 months now. I'm extremely happy with my experience here. I took Basic/1 with Chloe, and Basic/3 with Mei. Both of them are exceptional teachers. I had to skip Basic/2 because I was traveling, but took a private lesson with Chloe to catch up. Many other reviews here talk about Mei, the director, and I agree with all the positive things said. I'll focus on my experience with Chloe. Chloe is dedicated to her students both in the classroom and outside. Though I'm no longer taking her class, I follow her on Facebook, where she posts language tips and helpful resources. I've enjoyed the occasional social outings she's organized in addition to the school's monthly outings. In the classroom, she's able to really engage with students--I vividly remember an early class where she showed us how to combine the simple textbook expressions we learned in order to be a good Chinese boyfriend/girlfriend (I don't like to see you sad. I only like to see you happy). I also appreciated her great pronunciation tips. I also should note that the schools monthly social outings are a great way to meet other Chinese language learners. Coming out of Yelp-retirement temporarily to sing the praises of KaiXin Language School (which I actually found through Yelp). I started taking Mandarin with Beginner Level 1 taught by Mei, the owner of the school. I couldn't be happier with my decision to start "xué-ing Zhōngwén" here. The small class size (Beginner-level had seven students at the start) allows for a more interactive experience in a non-intimidating environment. Mei teaches using a building blocks methodology. Beginner starts with learning pinyin pronunciation and simple subject + verb sentence structure before progressing to subject + adjectives and question structures. She doesn't even get to numbers and counting until the third week of Beginner 2. Other features and benefits: 1. Evening group classes are two days a week, one and a half hours per. This is especially important for us working folks. 2. Each session runs four weeks, so classes aren't too much of a commitment time-wise or financially. 3. The location can't be beat, particularly for people who work in the Financial District/Union Square area. KaiXin is inside the Flood Building at the Powell St. Cable Car turnaround/Powell MUNI & BART station. 4. You're taking Mandarin Chinese with fellow students who want to be there too. It has been 10 years since I last completed a Mandarin course--I was an Asian studies minor in college with three years of Mandarin under my belt. I came to Mei, the teacher and proprietor of KaiXin Language School, with the challenge of helping me hone my Mandarin to become a certified simultaneous interpreter, which means striving to emulate native reading, writing, and speaking levels. In our pre-enrollment interview, Mei and I discussed my needs and goals. Subsequently, she helped me craft a private course that is both challenging and realistic, with a target date of a year to a year and a half to reach my penultimate goal. Based on initial impressions, I could tell that Mei was someone who was professional, skilled, supportive, and warm. Those are qualities that are the hallmark of a strong instructor. After completing three weeks of private classes, I can attest that my early assertions about Mei and KaiXin Language School were correct. I'm sure she encounters students of all ages, ethnicities, and walks of life. Mei has a rare ability to motivate and make anyone feel at ease, whether novice or expert. The Greek writer and philosopher Nikos Kazantzakis once said, "Ideal teachers are those who use themselves as bridges over which they invite their students to cross, then having facilitated their crossing, joyfully collapse, encouraging them to create bridges of their own." That is how Mei makes me feel when I'm in her cute and cozy classroom three hours a week. I become her #1 priority and she inspires me to excel beyond my comfort zone. I have already gotten more out of three weeks at KaiXin Language School than I did out of three years of Mandarin undergraduate classes at UC Berkeley. I cannot express how much I adore Mei. She is a wonderful teacher and I wholeheartedly recommend her classes and private tutoring. I took the first two Saturday class series in Mandarin and found myself conversing with my husband's family after the first few classes. They were very impressed with my pronunciation and the materials I shared with them from class. I went back to Mei when I was preparing my wedding ceremony. I wanted to make a vow to my now in-laws in Mandarin, and Mei patiently helped me translate and learn the vow during a private tutoring session. It was worth every penny. One of my favorite moments of our wedding was hearing my mother-in-law's gasp when I started speaking to her in Mandarin. The faces of my husband's family visiting from Nanjing lit up when I addressed them, and they actually understood me! Our Mandarin-speaking friends assured me that my Mandarin sounded great. Whew! I love this school for so many reasons... 1. Mei is a wonderful teacher who speaks Mandarin with a loud, clear voice. She drills every aspect of pronunciation: vowels, consonants, tones, pinyin spelling, and sentence flow. The Basic 1 course is worth the money just to learn to speak the sounds and tones of Chinese. 2. This class uses pinyin (spelling Mandarin with the Latin A-Z alphabet), but the Chinese characters are also present if you wish to learn the characters. 3. We used a really great textbook that focuses on useful words and phrases. After 3 weeks I was surprised at the range of sentences that I could say in Mandarin. 4. Class is interactive and fun, and Mei has an utterly charming personality that puts everyone at ease. She even brings little snacks and treats for the students. 5. Location is great, right next to the Powell St. cable car turnaround. 6. Class size is small. We had 7 students, and some of them were so revved up about learning Chinese that they formed a study group and met after class in the food court at the San Francisco Centre across the street. I have a long-term goal of learning Chinese as well as I can, and the KaiXin language school is a fantastic way to start. Can't recommend it highly enough. read more

I looked at several options around the bay area for Mandarin classes or tutoring and found many options. I finally selected Kai Xin because of the great location, close to Bart/muni, along with the fast and easy emails and conversations with Mei, the teacher. Now that Ive been taking classes for several months it's apparent that Kin Xin was a great choice for learning mandarin. Being a native English speaker it's not been easy to master, however each class builds your confidence and Mei makes sure to keep you motivated. The in class exercises really target student weaknesses and lend to a fun environment to learn and laugh while building your grammar and vocabulary. I used to take classes at ABC Learning in San Francisco, but they decided to cancel my class because class size kept fluctuating. None of the sessions that ABC offered at that time worked for me, so I decided to look elsewhere. I searched around and talked to a few tutors. I even used Yelp, which turned out to be helpful. KaiXin Language School had very strong reviews, and it caught my attention. So I traded some emails with the teacher, Mei, because one of the important things to me was having some structure in the curriculum. Some tutors can go on big tangents and not follow a structure, which can be a nuisance when I'm trying to focus on grammar and sentence structure. Some students can pick up foreign languages quickly, but I cannot do that. Relative to the price, the quality and amount of material Mei covers is solid. Each lesson focuses on vocabulary, grammar, and situational dialogues centered on applicable themes like shopping or traveling. Even though Mei came from China a few years ago, she has adapted to teaching in a more familiar western format that most people will be looking for. This means she doesn't focus only on rote memorization, which admittedly is a big part of learning the vocabulary and characters. In a group class setting, you'll see that many of her students are really interested in learning everything about Chinese. So Mei will delve into the essence of certain characters and idioms. This makes it a plus because we end up sharing a lot of tips with each other. Even her substitute teacher has a similar teaching style to Mei. This shouldn't be a surprise, but Chinese teachers do have their lives, too. Every now and then, they need to out of town for family/vacation. So a consistent teaching style between teachers can be help. I take a Saturday class with Mei, and she has never cancelled a class. We've only needed a substitute once so far. Mei has formed a bond and friendship in some cases with her students because she fosters a more fun, festive atmosphere. In addition to the regular classes, she hosts events social events to help encourage learning about the Chinese language and culture.
