Understand that less than 20% of students actually achieve their PPL. The challenges are cost, availability of instructors and planes, weather, instructor objectives, personal availability, and other minor obstacles. Instruction quality can be both lacking or superior depending on who is teaching. If your goal is to get your PPL quickly, a flight school is a bad choice. Do some research before you decide. I didn't and I've spent over 4 years, $90K, and have had 5 instructors in pursuit of my PPL. If you're not in a rush and are just curious, it will work for you. It isn't easy and requires commitment. Get some guidance and explore the alternatives. Instructors have to complete your training and sign you off for your check ride. If they leave for better opportunities, you have to start over. At $300 and hour for rental and instructor cost, it gets expensive fast.

The Sundance Flying Club has a pretty crappy website. But don't be fooled by that. If you're looking to pay extra for a pretty website and a prettier office, go for it. If you're just looking for great people who are experienced, knowledgeable, and friendly, give Sundance a call. They answered all my questions before I showed up, and they answered a whole slew of other questions while I was there. Also, I learned that I'm actually too short to reach the pedals :/ (That's right, if you're short you might have issues) But no fear, we found me a booster seat! For a full hour I was a pilot! Master and Commander of the skies! It was fun and controlled, mixed in with just the right amount of bumpy air. After I landed, I got a certificate and my official first pilot hour logged! Truly Awesome.

Squadron 2 Flying. Club is located at Reid Hillview Airport. It's a small flying club where you can…read morelearn how to fly a plane. I stopped there today and spoke with Nick about the club and what it means to be a member. Nick tells me that when someone wants to learn to fly they can take lessons from instructors at the airport. In addition, there's a small lounge that you can use to take a little break in. When I was there today I picked up a magazine that was titled, "Learn to Fly!" It was full of information about airplanes and different courses that you can take to become a pilot. Generally the cost is anywhere from $50-$70 per hour. And it takes anywhere from 60 to 100 hours to learn to fly a small plane. Once a year this flying club has a special Saturday where they are open to the public and they provide flights and more information about the services they offer. If you want to become a pilot... I think this is your first stop in San Jose! The people are wonderful and friendly and the services they offer are awesome! Take some time on the weekend and go check them out. You never know... You might find a new passion in flying small airplanes! And when you go there... Tell them Karen sent you and you read about them on yelp!
