I got my hair done twice by them. Once for a a rehearsal dinner and the other for a wedding. They first day was just curls and then the next day was an up do. They did a marvelous job! The updo was 90 excluding tip which is fair I think for the location and the amount of effort she was putting into it. She made sure I was happy with how she styled my hair. And showed me how the updo would look like before she did it so I would have an idea. Received lots of complements :) read more

I am staying at the Hilton (even though I live in Chicago) as I am running a very large event here over the weekend. As a treat, I wanted to schedule blow outs for my senior staff who are all volunteers. I called the salon multiple times to make the appointment and no one ever answered, so I used the contact form to send an email. (In all fairness this would have been fairly last minute appointments). I received the following email from the Basia: Our first opening is 11am. So first client can be taken at 11am. Another two clients will have appointment 11::30, and the fourt and fifth around 12:15pm. If you gave me your contact telefon number that will be much better and easier to communicate . Thank you. Sincerely. Basia I replied with my phone number. I never received a call or confirmation that these were confirmed, and based on this email, made other reservations at a nearby salon. I received a call at 11:11am saying I made appointments but no one showed up. I said that the appointments were never confirmed so I made others. She proceeded to call me very unprofessional and rude. I tried to apologize for the miscommunication, but that it was on both of us AND was about to offer to come pay for 50% of the services when she interrupted me to tell me again how rude and unprofessional I am. I generally only leave positive yelp reviews but I had such a negative experience I had to share. I only gave her 2 stars because a colleague of mine went to her last year and said it was great. We all have bad days, but I could never imagine speaking to a client in that way. read more

I'm giving this one star because I can't give it 0. My daughter is, as I type, having her hair "fixed" after Jasmine gave her the worst ombre coloring I have ever seen. I would have been better off buying the ombre kit at Target. My daughter also has an eyebrow threading scheduled- there is NO WAY I would let Jasmine touch her eyebrows after this. Now I will have to pay probably close to $200 to have our old stylist (we moved to Chicago from the suburbs recently) fix her hair, which is absolutely fried from bleaching, coloring & re-coloring. There is no way I will be relinquishing the Groupon to this business, and I can only hope Groupon will refund my money. When I called a little while ago I had the absolute pleasure (sarcasm) of speaking to Olga, who indicated that she was a manager. She explained to me that Jasmine was "fixing" my daughter's hair. The fact that she admitted it was being "fixed" is admittance enough to the horrible job that was done. WHen I informed her I wasn't paying, she became belligerent. TERRIFIC customer service. WOW. My stylist Jasmine was VERY sweet and skilled. My coarse Ainu hair cannot be tamed but she did an amazing job. I was staying at Essex Inn across the street for my friend's wedding weekend and needed help with bridesmaid hair. Very convenient place to get done up for a wedding in the loop. I would give her handiwork 4.5 stars -- I did the other bridesmaids' hair myself but my own hair is very difficult. What detracts from the very positive results was the very unpleasant experience with owner Basia. When I had booked the appointment I explained I was looking to spend no more than $60 and they said they would take care of me and give me a good deal. But of course when the services were finished she wanted me to pay $80, not including tip. When I wanted to use a Yelp deal to offset that she added a restriction and said that the deal was only valid for Chicago residents and that I could not use it. I was in a rush to stick to the wedding day-of schedule so I just sucked it up. But it was pretty lame to feel misled and ripped off. read more

In general, my Yelp reviews are overwhelmingly positive unless I have a truly negative experience at a location. Well, here's one of those reviews. I scheduled a mani-pedi here after seeing their Groupon offer and reading generally positive reviews of their services on Yelp. My appointment was at 10am. The manicurist did not arrive until 1047am. Now, I understand that the post-inauguration protests significantly interfered with traffic but I still managed to arrive on time. Further, the salon had my phone number so why, as a courtesy, I didn't receive a call letting me know of the delay baffles me. After being told she was running late, I was essentially ignored, sitting their like an idiot waiting. In the 40+ minutes, one attempt was made to contact the tech and then I was told she tried calling but there was no answer. When she finally arrived, I gave her the polish I selected and she tells me oh no, this is a special nail polish so I am going to have to charge extra. Really? I had to ask if she was serious, that she arrived significantly late for my appointment and couldn't even extend the courtesy of waiving the up charge? Thankfully she agreed that would only be fair. The mani-pedi was the least relaxing experience I've had pampering myself. It was incredibly rushed and very rough. I do appreciate that the circumstances to start the day were not typical but I still find myself turned off by the level of professionalism demonstrated during my visit. I will not return to Basia. I went to Basia again after setting up a correction appointment with the owner, Basia. She kept the salon open late for me, personally explained the circumstances behind my stylist's rescheduling and did not rush on my hair. She listened to what I wanted and not only did the color come out beautifully, but she took the time to style my hair perfectly since I was headed for a night out after my hair appointment (which was so appreciated and extremely considerate of her!). She did not charge me for these services and she was extremely polite and professional. I fully intend to return to Basia Salon for future highlights and cuts. My hair turned out so well, she took pictures for her portfolio! I am EXTREMELY HAPPY with my hair now and I have Basia to thank for that! Based on my combined experiences at Basia, I advise future clients to not only bring pictures, but also to write down in extremely specific detail what you want so your personal vision for your hair is as well articulated as possible. read more

What a great experience! I came here on a whim after buying a Groupon Now! Deal ($95 for a haircut and highlights). Basia was nice enough to make an appointment for me at 7:30PM (even though that meant I would be closing the place out with a 2-hour process). In addition to the highlights, Sam (the stylist) suggested for my roots to be dyed too since my hair was lighter on the bottom due to previous dyeing. Sam worked efficiently and precisely. He was very friendly and made me feel at ease. I have naturally stick straight dark brown hair, which he turned into a wavy rich medium brown w/ caramel highlights. Sam gave me layers to add body to my hair as well as side bangs that swept across my forehead. He kept the length of my hair long, and the cut was exactly what I asked for. In short, my hair looks amazing! I haven't had highlights for years, but after this experience I definitely plan on coming back again and doing it all over again. What a hidden gem! I work in the South Loop, and really wanted to get a haircut on my lunch break. I have not had good luck with a few other South Loop salons, so I went searching around on Yelp before heading out. Basia Hair Design didn't have many reviews, but they were all 5 stars, so I thought I would check it out. It's a bit tricky to find. You have to go down into the basement of the Hilton. But it's well worth it. The space is pretty bare bones. No fancy lighting or elaborate stations. But the staff there clearly knows what they're doing. I was able to walk right in and get a great haircut from Olga. She did exactly what I wanted and helped me think about how I might cut my hair after it grows a bit more. She was super meticulous. I had a groupon and made an appointment with Jasmine. My partial highlights and cut turned out wonderful and the best part, I was in and out in just an hour and a half! I highly recommend Jasmine as a stylist. She is sweet and really tries hard to do exactly what the client wants. I took a risk and got my eyebrows threaded by her too. Oh my. It was painful but so worth it. My unmanaged eyebrows are asymmetrical with more hair on one side than the other. This usually trips waxers up but not her. Nestled in the lower level of the Hilton is a sweet spot where I just went to get a great haircut. A South Loop gem-walking distance from so many places. My hair cut is as good or better than the ones I've gotten at the super expensive salons on the Gold Coast. He listened to my ideas about what I thought I needed, he gave me suggestions, and then followed through in execution and made my hair so much more beautiful than I imagined. I told Sam I wanted my highlights chunky but classy and tasteful, he also suggested my lowlight color be a little warmer than my natural color. Do you ever see a woman with the most beautiful and healthy hair that has not a strand out of place and think she must have spent a fortune on her hair? Thanks to Sam, I'm that woman now! And I didn't have to spend a fortune on it. I was checking out hair of the other women in the salon and they all had beautiful, classy, tasteful, and expensive looking hair. All were fine. Cons: My 7 year old daughter had polish applied to her fingernails and toes (not a full manicure/pedicure. Just polish). I went here last month after getting a Groupon for a cut and highlights and it was terrible! I had to spend over $200 dollars and 3 hours getting my hair fixed the next day at my regular salon (Red Door Spa). First of all, the place was hard to find, no signs or anything, and then it was in the basement and looked like a cheap place from the 80's. I had made an appointment and there were no other customers but I still had to wait forever to get started. I should have left by now, hind sight is 20/20. When they can finally be bothered to get to me the guy talks me into getting low lights for an additional cost. There's no music playing or any separation between stylists stations so when another customer came in I had to spend an hour listening to his entire conversation about back waxing and breaking up with his girlfriend. When everything was finished, at first I thought it looked good. I blame this on the terrible fluorescent lighting because it wasn't until I got home and my boyfriend looked at me horrified and asked why my hair was gray that I could see my "highlights" were bleach blonde and the "low lights" were big BLACK streaks! I have red hair, WHITE and BLACK are NOT highlights and low lights! I had to go to my regular salon the very next morning and spend over $200 dollars and 3 hours having them fix my hair. I was also informed that they never should have offered me low lights, those are only used when someone has had a lot of past highlights and they need to even your hair tones back out some. He just wanted to get more money from me. I do not recommend this salon, I can't believe there are so many good reviews on here for them. The atmosphere and their work is awful. read more

I got my nails done here for my wedding. The owner did my manicure and pedicure herself, and they turned out great. She was even able to salvage the nail I broke about a week before. I tend to destroy manicures in no time flat, and I didn't get a single chip for nearly a week, and they still looked OK two weeks later. The pedicure has held up for over a month now. Negative points though because I told her I needed to be back in my hotel room by a certain time to meet my makeup artist and I had to leave her waiting in the lobby for 15 minutes because my appointment ran long. i have been Basia's customer for about 3 years. i first dealt with Sam for my highlights and base color, then when he left, she took over and did what i would call an overall good job (ok, had to go back a few times to remove some orangey parts). That means spending $210 every about 45 days (calculate the total spent there), in addition to keratin treatments & occasional trims. i think she is among the most expensive salons in chicago, but no money is spent on improving the salon's appearance. It looks very basic. it was nice to feel treated like a guest and be able to schedule easily. We always had a very friendly relationship, not really a stylist/customer one. Unfortunately it ended in a very unpleasant way for me. My last visit was extremely stressful, as i could feel negative vibes from her, and it was similar during the previous visit....45 days earlier. So both times were unpleasant. When i asked her what was wrong, why she was stressed, she kept saying she was fine. She was coughing and her voice wasn't clear. i wanted to check if she was sick to protect myself, she flat out said "NO, i am NOT sick. i am in PERFECT health". She kept coughing over my face all the time, including during the shampooing. i thought "okay, looks like she IS sick after all, and that i will be contaminated". The visit was long, and When i briefly expressed my frustration with the fact that my stylist was taking out her bad mood on me, i got yelled at in a sort of a blow up / nervous breakdown where she said she was "worried about" (something that i won't disclose here). So i was right from the start that something was wrong. To be honest, i was shocked to find myself in this truly awkward, uncomfortable and unpleasant situation and have to endure 1 more hour of negative vibes there. i didn't say anything, and even though i empathize with her issue, it does NOT justify yelling at your customer and acting stressed out all the way TWICE in a row. After all, she is not doing me a favor, i am paying BIG bucks for those visits. i was stupid enough to leave a tip but was in a rush to get out once and for all...with a 1.5 INCH chunk of platinum/yellow hair on the top of my head and copper orange on each side when i had insisted i wanted to get away from the chunky look. When i pay $210, i expect a better job. Here is the "scoop": the very next morning i woke up with throat ache, mucus, all over body aches and a runny nose and am still struggling with it, and struggling to work. If i had not been contaminated by Basia who was careless and unprofessional enough to cough around customers and make them sick while denying she is sick, i would not have updated this review. i remember i had a 70+ year old Esthetician long time ago whose husband was literally dying from cancer and who was always incredibly professional and nice everytime, even after he passed away....We all have worries in our lives, and when i go there i have my own worries too, and you do too. it does NOT justify taking them out on your customers, ESPECIALLY a long time one. This is just entitled, spoiled behavior. When you are unable to deal with stress and work at the same time, you stay at home. When you are SICK, you wear something to cover your mouth or you inform your customer, or you stay at home. This is all just so unprofessional and ridiculous. But there are many hair salons in chicago to choose from. read more

I usually stick to one stylist but she burned my hair and then cut it like an ugly birds nest with too many sticks on one side, so I had no choice but to sever the relationship. Heartbroken and ticked off, I went on hair strike and waited too long to get a highlight and cut. My hair was droopy and ugly and I was as stubborn as my fuddy father is in going to the doctor. I am always leery of going to a new salon but I knew the day would come when I needed to look like a human being again. I took a chance, bought a groupon and I am soooo glad I did. I had really good luck. Among the other reviews here, I am going to add another great review for Sam. I explained what I wanted, got what I wanted and walked out feeling like a million bucks in under 2 hrs. The best thing about this place is their flexibility. I felt like if I asked them if I could come in for an updo for a surprise ball gown function, they would stick around just to help me, without question. They just want to be there for their customers, hopefully gaining repeats. I will be one of them. AND Basia is a quirky host and Prince Jordan her little old-guy rescue Yorkie is ADORBS. I got a haircut and higlight deal from groupon for $95, so i thought, why not? They had availability that afternoon so timing was extremely convenient. Finding the place was a bit of a challenge as they are in the basement of a hotel. The salon needs a facelift, but if you go in with the attitude that you are getting a good deal, the glitz and glam aren't needed...I got my hair cut and highlighted with Sam, who was really nice. However, I felt not attentive. I have gotten higlights many times before... and he seemed to have left the highlights in for a rather long time. As i was waiting someone else came in to get a blow dry last minute. While i patiently waited, 5 minutes turned into 20+ minutes. At one point I had to interupt their conversation and remind Sam that I still needed tending to. The highlights didn't turn out as even as i had hoped (i don't like the chunky look and even after mentioning it, his resassurance proved inadequate). The haircut was great, but I don't think i will return. But then again... i only paid $95 - so what could i expect? I would only go if you needed a last minute fix and you got a deal. read more

Went to the salon with a Groupon for a keratin hair treatment. Jasmin was great, but the treatment did nothing. I'm sure their haircuts and highlights go well, but do not waste your time or money if you are going for a keratin treatment. I completely understand that keratin treatments do not completely eliminate curls (and was reminded so when booking my appointment) but I honestly saw zero change when they promised it would relax the curls (also Jasmin said my hair wasn't even that curly, so I think the treatment should have at least worked a little bit easier for me than for others.) I'm sure it's a great salon for other things, but not for keratin treatments. I couldn't imagine if I had not had a Groupon and paid the full $300 for a treatment that didn't work. read more
