I really wanted to like this place more, I really, really did. Came here on the last day of our trip exploring the trifecta of National Parks. After being inundated with burgers, I felt like something a little lighter/healthier was in order. AMBIANCE - just off the main strip of downtown Rapid City you'll find this cafe. Cafe is spacious and clean, and is connected to a brewery where, if you're inclined to do so, they will bring your food over to you while you sit there. The Brewery has board games you can play at your table and a variety of pinball machines. SERVICE - service was....ok. I was asking the guy about one of the toppings on the sandwich and he looked at me like I was an alien. Maybe it was his first day? Not sure. He was nice, but not as knowledgeable as you might like for someone working the register. MENU - they had a pretty good mix of sandwiches (hot and cold), and also had a few sides. I also saw they had some homemade lemonades and such, which I was tempted to try, but did not end up trying instead. FOOD - my wife and mother got the badlands sandwich which had roasted sirloin mushrooms, swiss and and side of horeradish mayo. My mom and I both did the rapid city which kind of seemed like a philly cheesesteak sandwich (grilled beef, onions, peppers, jalapenos, smoked gouda with a lime cilantro), while my kids rocked the pastrami. The sandwiches were a pretty good size (at almost $20 a piece, they better be). My kids thought the pastrami was good and after days of burgers, it was a nice change up. My wife liked her sandwich, which was mostly carried by the horseradish mayo. My mom and I thought our sandwiches were just...ok. The meat needed salt, and the lime cilantro was not very flavorful. I ended up stealing some of my wife's horseradish mayo which helped, but just a bit. OVERALL - good not great. Wish the meat was a little more flavorful and the food came out a bit quicker (there was only one order ahead of us and it took a good 20-30 minutes to get our food). Not sure I'd come back. Solid deli with long wait times. We visited around 1 pm on a Saturday. After placing our order, it took 45 minutes to get our food, which seemed excessive for sandwiches, so it seems they're understaffed. Someone working at the connected bar actually tried to clear our napkins/silverware before our food even arrived! Thankfully, the food was good, save for way too much mayo, which was easily remedied. The standout item was actually the sticky bun, which we ate the next morning- one of the best I've ever had! All the drinks also look amazing- we tried some kind of berry lemonade that was exceptional. It was also my husband's first time trying bison, and it was thinly sliced to perfection. It appears that they have an excellent variety of breads. I'd recommend going here if you're not too hungry and have time to wait. And definitely get the baked goods! read more

Needed food. Wanted quick and simple. Nothing heavy. It's how a friend and I ended up here. Just off the main drag of the downtown area, parking is free and a lot easier to find. I don't know what it's like when it's busy because on the day we arrived, the entire area was a ghost town. Not even sleepy - no cars on the road and this cafe was even still opening. Walk in, order and find a seat. Not a lot of seating but there's both indoors and out. We chose to sit indoors as it was a little warm and I didn't want to be out under the sun. See pics of the food. Wanted salad. I tend to always want salad. Went with the Springfield. Crisp and fresh - really enjoyed the toppings and dressing. Harmony. That's how I'd describe this salad. I'd definitely have it again. Grabbed the Hot Springs. Wanted a cold sandwich. Wanted an Italian. Closest I could find and the vinaigrette was even on the side so I could add as much or as little as I wanted. I remember enjoying this sandwich so much I considered grabbing a second for the road. However, we're traveling and gotta try other foods and places. This would be one place I'd go back to if or when I find myself back in Rapid City. We came here after landing at the Rapid City airport as reviews were great for this lunch spot. What we got: *Bison - we were interested in trying bison brisket. Overall, the sandwich was flavorful, but the brisket was very dry. Not one I would get again. *The Paha Sapa - this one sounded interesting with a variety of meat with a three pepper tapenade. I wasn't sure if this was going to be a spicy sauce or not, but it only added a mild kick. I do wish there was more of the blackberry sauce on the sandwich to detect it a little more. Otherwise, this sandwich was full of flavor! Service was very slow, to the point that a couple of tables were going to check in on their order. **June 2025: Tuesday Afternoon Visit** My friend and I wanted something quick but delicious and found this cafe to fit our needs. It's located in the Downtown area of Rapid City and since we came on a weekday we were able to find parking pretty easily. The day was warm and as we entered the restaurant was air conditioned and seemed to be attached to a larger bar restaurant, which is where you'd go if you needed to use the restroom. My friend and I ordered a sandwiches each and shared the salad. They had both indoor and outdoor seating The Noms The Paha ($15.99) - hot sandwich with pastrami, smoked sausage, ham and white cheddar and three pepper blackberry tapenade; this was delicious! the tapanade gave it a nice sweetness with the hearty meats and since it was toasted the crunch of the bread added a nice texture to it Springfield Salad ($13.99) - pecans, spinach, strawberries, orange and gouda cheese; This salad was so refreshing and all the ingredients worked well together. It helped my body feel fueled up with my vitamins. I do feel that the pricing is a bit higher than other cafes in this region; however, these are pretty consistent with the sando shops back home in California. Very yummy sandwiches! Each we ordered were big portions. There's seating in Bashful Bison, which functions both as a lunch spot and deli/market. It is adjacent to the Hay Camp Brewing Company, so you can order food here and sit in the Brewery space and order drinks there if you'd like. The service is minimal; the service takes your order at the register and brings it out to your table when it's ready. I've been to other sandwich shops in the area and trust me, this place is one of the better spots! read more

This is just not worth the money and my time, a big disappointment. About 6pm on a Thursday we came in two adults and two kids, 2 people in front of us in line so ordering didn't take long. We were stuck in Rapid City for a couple of days due to an issue with the hotel we were staying at. After having some disappointing sandwiches a couple of days prior, and seeing the promising ones served here, we decided upon Bashful Bison to keep our minds off the hotel situation. We were a little confused when we first walked up, since we couldn't find the Bashful Bison sign anywhere - it turns out that this sandwich shop is actually inside the Hay Camp Brewing Company Building. The place was quite full for lunch - we placed our order at the front and waited for our food. The sandwiches are made fresh to order and took a good 20 minutes before they were ready. For seating, we could select seats inside the windowed sandwich area, or inside the brewery section. We chose to take the sandwiches to go since we still had some issues at the hotel we needed to solve. The Rapid City ($14.49) - Very nice sandwich, with plenty of tender grilled beef to whet the appetite. The beef is cooked perfectly for the sandwich. They don't drain the meat, so all of the juices soak into the bun and add plenty of moisture. They mix quite a bit of onion, peppers and jalapenos on top of the meat, adding fresh sweetness and a tiny bit of heat. They then melt several slices of smoked gouda, giving a stretchy cheesy quality to every bite. A generous amount of aioli is spread on the sub, giving additional fat and moisture. The sub is quite dense and chewy and manages to encapsulate all the ingredients quite well, with the cheese acting as additional binder to help keep all the peppers from sliding out. Eating this sandwich is still slightly messy, given the cheese stretch and the juices dripping out. (5/5) The Bison ($17.49) - This sandwich is kind of their version of a bbq beef brisket sandwich. There's nicely melted cheddar cheese, a bunch of pickles giving a bit of a tang and crunch, and plenty of sweet and tangy bbq sauce - not enough to drown the sandwich, but enough that it covers all the ingredients. The star here is the bison meat. All of the bison meat I had on this cross country trip were quite lean with little to no fat. The sliced bison brisket on this sandwich was the sole exception - instead of being dry and lean, the brisket had some fantastic fattier portions, giving a bit of a contrast in texture and taste. This is a solid sandwich, although I'd probably prefer it with something other than bbq sauce. (4/5) We didn't find any other eating options in Rapid City to be particularly interesting, so we went back later for dinner and decided to dine in. I guess this is more of a lunch destination because the place was pretty much completely empty at 6:30 PM and the sandwiches only took about 5 minutes to come out. The Summerset ($12.99) - The Bashful Bison gives you a big pile of salty but very flavorful corned beef. The meat is actually quite moist and not too overly salted - some other corned beefs I have trouble eating without having a huge glass of water on hand, but this was manageable without. They absolutely slather the top bun with mustard, giving quite a strong mustardy kick with every bite. Possibly a bit too strong for me! A slice of cheddar completes the interior of the sandwich, although in this case it was kind of cold and not melted at all. My favorite part of the sandwich was actually the bun - it's served warm and is very chewy and soft. (4/5) The Spearfish ($14.49) - This sandwich is very similar to The Rapid City which I had for lunch. The only difference is the change in meat from beef to chicken, which still remains moist and flavorful. I did find this one to be a bit spicier than the other sandwich, but that didn't detract from my enjoyment at all. I liked this one just as much as The Rapid City. (5/5) I ate here twice in a single day. If that's not a ringing endorsement of a restaurant, I don't know what is. If you're in Rapid City and you want a nice sandwich, Bashful Bison is where to go. Bathrooms - Larger restrooms in the brewery side of the building. They are kind of bizarre. I don't really recommend using the stalls because there are gigantic gaps in the door and the bottom of the door is way higher than the usual skimpy American toilet stall doors. If you want any kind of privacy, avoid the stalls. read more

Mary Beth at a tourist center mentioned this restaurant for dinner so the six of us said why not and decided to try this sandwich place. Each couple split a sandwich, the Somerset, the Spearfish and the Hermosa and we all really enjoyed our sandwiches. Each sandwich very good, and the sub rolls big but not too big. The owner, Shawn I think, is a very friendly man who was totally open to any changes like 'cheese on the side' for someone who can't eat dairy or extra mustard and other similar requests. In telling him we enjoyed our sandwiches he introduced me to Lilla, who makes the sandwiches and seems like a fun lady. The price of the sandwiches very fair and two of us went to the bar that they share an open door with and got "homemade root beer," which we enjoyed. We recommend this restaurant to anyone looking for good sandwiches and wanting to go somewhere local as opposed to a chain store when in Rapid City. read more

Really pricey for a sandwich. Had a cold wasa which is veggies and cheese on a sourdough bread slices. It was good and a decent size sandwich. Each sandwich is 12 and up. No sides come with it. The teas are $5 and no refills. My dad had the bison sandwich which had a good amount of meat on it and some sauce but that's about it for $18. It was a nice try but not sure I would go back. Great stop for some sandwiches off the Main St. area in Rapid City. The folks here are friendly and the meats in the sandwiches are very good. Also, they had good drinks. The menu is full of unique sandwich creations filled with great flavors and fresh ingredients. We ordered the Bison Chili, The SpeaSpearfish sandwich and another sandwich with BBQ Bison, they were all incredible!! We checked out the Brewery and got their homemade Root Beer and Orange Cream Soda on draft! Both were alcohol free but brewed on-site and filled with flavor! So my husband had just told me about this place as we were driving around. I was definitely interested in trying it because I love sandwiches of all kinds. The Bashful Bison is located inside Hay Camp Brewery and it is amazing. I got "The Badlands" sandwich which had grilled tenderloin and oyster mushrooms and a horseradish mayo. Everything right up my alley. And when I tell you. Wow. Amazing. So flavorful and delicious. The workers were also absolutely amazing! We placed our order and went to go get a drink quick and planned to go pick up our food and the cashier brought it right to us!
