We stopped by B's before heading over to LCA for a concert. We stumbled on this chic restaurant by accident and was very happy we stopped to give it a try. Service from start to finish was pretty good. We had gotten there shortly after they opened so it took some time to order but honestly I didn't mind because we had quite a bit of time before the concert. We were sat in the bar area that had a few table tops, couches, and seats at the bar. This place is a great place for a date and a fun night out with friends. We ordered a few small dishes that felt like a party in our mouth! We started out with the tornado potato that was dressed with Sriracha mayo, pickled ginger, and bonito. If you've ever had Japanese style savory pancake- okonomiyaki, you'll definitely be a fan of this. We also ordered the miso caesar salad, which was absolutely delicious! You could really taste every ingredient in every bite. I just wish they went lighter on the dressing. Still pretty good, I just prefer less dressing on my salads. Also ordered the lobster bao bun that came with popcorn- yes, popcorn! This was definitely unique. For the main meal, we ordered the waygu stirk steak that came with potatoes and mushrooms that was finished off with zip sauce. Absolutely delicious, just a tad on the salty side. We ended the meal off with the taro soft serve with popping boba. Even though it was cold, we were so happy to end the night with this dessert. And the serving size was pretty big. read more

Unfortunately, this restaurant had a lot of misses. Came here with a reservation on a Saturday night. We were seated immediately in the lounge, which is what we had a reservation for. Unfortunately, they messed up 3 of our orders. They brought my friend the wrong drink, they brought out a wrong order, and they neglected to bring my friend a different drink order. The food itself was all too salty and largely disappointing. We got the dumplings, skirt steak, two different buns, and two different skewers. Our favorite was the mushroom skewer, which was really tasty and well seasoned. Everything else I would not order again. The vibes were all great, but the food was super disappointing. The service also was super slow at the end and it took forever to get our bill. I do not plan to try again. read more

We visited Basan before going to see a concert at LCA, and it was the perfect location! There's a lot of parking lots and garages nearby, and it's literally right next to the venue. Upon walking into the restaurant, the first thing I noticed is that the space is gorgeous, and so cozy. We had a reservation so we were seated right away. We decided to go with a few items to share, picking a few things from each menu category. We had the lobster bun, the crab mozzarella sticks, unagi tacos, bacon skewers, chicken skewers, Cacio e Pepe udon, and cookies and cream dessert. Everything was presented beautifully and served quickly. As far as flavor goes, it was all good, but not great. Each item just felt like it was missing a bit of flavor. Overall, we had a decent time. I loved the location, atmosphere, and service, but I just wish the food was a bit better. I would still recommend coming here -- we may have just not picked the best menu items to try. The only other thing I will say is it's a bit of a hike to the bathroom, so just keep that in mind. read more

We wanted to like this place more than we did as it had good reviews. But we were disappointed with both service and food. The beef skewers and the tornado potato were probably the best items. The crab mozzarella sticks were disappointing as they were mostly breading and the filling was more like a pimento cheese with a hint of crab. We had the chef's tasting menu which is only offered at specific times. This experience is a set menu as created by the chef and changes almost daily. Your seats are bar style seating with a front view of the kitchen so you can see everything the chefs are doing! Definitely a cool experience! This is my first time here and I love it! I had the Golden hour which is there version of an old fashioned 10/10! I had the coney bun which was so fluffy and soft I ordered another 10/10 the twice fried chicken bun 10/10 and the Philly skewers 7/10. The vibe inside is calm and cool, the seating is close together but that did not take away from the experience. Sooo. I have always hated some plates BUT Basan has changed me lol. It has become one of my favorite chill night spots after a game, concert or event downtown. I love the design of the whole space, but especially the lounge/bar area. Always a chill and amazing vibe! You might catch a hostess or staff with weird energy once in awhile, but overall the staff and service is great! Now let's get to the food. My two favorite dishes are the BBQ Shrimp Bun which had great flavor and the Tornado Potatoes which are amazing! Simply amazing Asian Fusion dining experience - Basan not only has incredible robata but many full entrees that are fusion Japanese/Korean dishes (like the cavatelli). Also buns like their perch one which was delicious. Their mocktails are also excellent and I had all of them. Service also exceptional - very attentive and the delivery of food was prompt. Their desserts also were spectacular as well, in particular the ube cake. Interior atmosphere very stylish and cool, and it's located in an apartment complex that looks like a hotel. Also right across the street from Little Caesar's' Arena. Most highly recommended if you are in downtown Detroit! Waitstaff was friendly and attentive to our needs. Boa buns and skewers are featured items. The fried chicken and squash Baos were thoughtfully prepared with flavors melding into a delightful mouth experience! Peanut chicken, cilantro shrimp, and maple bacon skewers were flavorful and scrumptious. We also order a potato twirled on a skewer with both sweet and savory flavors enhanced with picked ginger. We took great delight in eating the chefs creation. The pop tarts were uninspired as the chicken had very little flavor. The puff pastry was yummy, I ate that and left the chicken. This menu item would be a kids menu favorite. The lobster cheese sticks were not a favorite because we don't usually eat cheese sticks. They were not but they felt kitschy (sports bar) in comparison to the rest of the menu. Let me tell that this place is on a whole new level ‍ The food was absolutely phenomenal. We ordered the coney dogs, the perch, the twice fried chicken and the wagyu skewers. The coney dogs with the best I've ever tasted. All were served on a bao buns that were light, fluffy and extremely tasty. We did not like the skewers so much. Our server was on point throughout the entire experience and answered all of our questions concerning the menu. We enjoyed our time there because it quiet, quaint and the decor was unmatched. Came in right after opening before a wings game and while there was a handful of customers we had to wait 15 min to be sat at the 1/2 empty bar only to be served by a waitrer(ess???) instead of bartender. Our first visit to Basan and it did not disappoint. It was very quiet when we arrived at 630 this Friday night. ...no games or concerts downtown tonight. Our waitress was excellent. She explained the menu and offered up her favorites. I had "scouted" the menu so pretty much knew what we wanted. We shared many things and all were very good to great. We particularly loved the potato tornado, lobster bun and Korean pancake. I loved the egg rolls but they were too spicy for my wife...not your typical egg rolls! The chef here is clearly talented and creative with the menu and the delicious sauces and seasonings. The peanut butter brownies brought with the bill were a nice touch and delish. Basan has been on my list for a while now, and a friend and I were in town for a show at the Fillmore tonight so I finally got to try it out. We each started out with a drink, both of which were very good. Our waitress said we should order everything all at once and then they would pace things for us, in terms of food. We each got a bao; I had the fried chicken bao and my friend had the firecracker shrimp. My bao was excellent and one of my favorite parts of the meal. We also tried: Meatball skewers - tasty but overall just okay Salad with miso-goat cheese - beautiful presentation and very tasty, the cheese is kind of like a paste on the bottom though. Tornado potato - fun name, definitely had a seafood taste though. Corn dogs - It's some sort of Thai sausage and was a bit too spicy for me. Kung Pao cauliflower - delicious. I forgot it was vegetarian, it's fried perfectly. Plus they gave us free mochi bread for dessert! Waitservice was excellent as well. Our waitress did say that their menu changes seasonally, so that's every 2 to 3 months for them. We also had an assistant waitress and someone who brought drinks, too. I read in another review that they do happy hour, but my guess is that it's just at the bar. Don't quote me on that though. I would definitely come back here based on tonight's experience. It's a little pricey, the small to mid-range plates are about $10-15 each, and each bao was only one serving, but everything was plated beautifully and pretty tasty. read more

What a wonderful way to start the day! We love finding great Happy Hour specials and let me tell you! We found a great one! I'll start by saying that the ambiance is a chill, but upscale vibe. A great place for hanging out with a group, or for sate night. They had a variety of seating options. All very charming. Our bartender was a wealth of knowledge. Very accommodating, polite, friendly, and patient. She made our evening all the more special! I started with the RDR, which tasted like a sweet tart. Mmmmm. He chose the Sake flight. Both were great choices! We then got a variety of happy hour small plates. I love small plates because it gives me the opportunity to try a bunch of things I wouldn't usually try. The meatball and chicken skewers were awesome. Neither of us liked the Octopus. It is a texture thing. It's also hard to get over the suckers. Lol. I don't like the buns too much but we chose three. I ate the insides but left the bun to him. The chicken and brussel sprouts were amazing! As were the firecracker shrimp. My favorite item by far was the unagi spring rolls. 3/24 I was going to give it 2 stars but we felt so disrespected. We came before a wings game with 3 couples, the first couple who was there didn't get served by Damaris K for what they said was 20 minutes. Then at another point we had been waiting again to be served after getting passed by Damaris K 5 times and no recognition. When we finally could grab his attention. He kind of snapped at us saying he'll be right back and then waited another 10 minutes to come back. Ended up going to the bar to grab a drink because we were sitting empty handed for 10-15 minutes. After paying 14 for half a shot in a Jamo ginger I kindly walked to the bar and asked for a shot of jamo. Bc the drink was weak as hell. I was met with confrontation about how they make it all fresh. Listen I don't care, if you're gonna charge $14 for a drink, it needs to be perfect. The drink was good it was just weak. After this we were served looks from the bar the rest of the night as we tried to get out of there into the game. Overall, pretty uncomfortable situation. Among use we had a variety of drinks and they were all good. As far as the food we have mixed reviews. Waygu burger and chips were very good. Chicken skewers were really good the peanutty sauce was good and we actually dipped other things in it. Crab mozzarella sticks were tasty and wayyy than i thought and just a hint of spice. The chicken wings were good and crispy. The miso Caesar was good. It didn't taste like Caesar but was a refreshing salad. Lobster boa bun and Shrimp skewers were ok. Was a bit nervous about our meal because of the mixed reviews I've heard, BUT we thoroughly enjoyed our dinner at Basan! The location was perfect as we were watching a game at LCA. Our server was fantastic and kept a really great flow so we could get in & out in a timely fashion for the game. We had the following & I'm ordering the below in the order of MUST GET to still good but if you had to pick...get it next time. *Corn Dogs (thai herb sausage. unagi mustard. chili crisp ketchup) - maybe the best corndog I have EVER had in my life. The exterior was crispier and the ratio of batter to sausage was awesome. The thai herb sausage was super flavorful! *Scallop Motoyaki ( miso mayo. trout roe. garlic chips.) - If you've had baked dynamite at a Japanese restaurant, this is reminiscient of that in the best way possible. I've been looking for a good dynamite in Michigan and I'm glad to have found it here! Plating on this was gorgeous too! If you haven't had dynamite - think oyster Rockefeller with a baked/creamy consistency but dynamite uses kewpie mayo (aka the best mayo haha) *Udon (mentaiko butter. sixty minute egg.) - housemade udon?! AMAZING! They also cooked it perfectly so it wasn't soggy. It's also literally a sixty minute egg but cooked at such a low and slow temp that the egg yolk is still silky and delicious! *Octopus Skewer (gochujang. fried garlic.) - grilled perfectly as the texture was perfect & not rubbery at all. It tasted very gochujang foward, but I enjoyed it! I also appreciate how they cut and skewered the octopus which made it really easy to eat. *Brussels Sprout bun (smoked tomato. crispy shallot. ginger) - just comes with 1 so make sure you order multiple if you want! This was really good! Had good flavors and texture which can be tricky with brussels! *Tres Leches (ube. caramel. cardamom whip.) - we had to save room for dessert! I honestly probably wouldn't get this again as I was attracted by the ube but the flavor was mostly dominated by the cardamom whip. Also, I really enjoyed the cocktails I had: *Basa Basa Old Fashioned (whisky. chrysanthemum. angostura. buckwheat honey. yuzu kosho.) - great old fashioned! no complaints *Shibuya (japanese whisky. rye. domaine de canton. chili infused umeshu. dashi. lemon hawthorne. orange.) - if you're a martini lover like me -- you'll love this more savory cocktail! Despite the chili infusion of the umeshu, this wasn't spicy at all to me (which was good!) Basan Detroit lives up to all the hype I've heard about it! The place is super cute and the staff were lovely. It's a little awkward to get to, granted when we went there was a massive concert at little Cesar's area so that may be why we had trouble finding parking. But one you get there you won't regret it. Our server was well versed in the menu and gave great recommendations! I would love to give a special shout out to, the brussel sprouts bao bun! I haven't stopped talking to people about it since we left. I've even made plans to go back and get it the next time I visit Detroit. The pear butter that comes with the tofu donuts is delicious! Totally bummed out. I think and hope this was just a bad day. Was able to grab a bar seat before the Red Wings game. Ordered a cocktail it was decent- tons of options to choose from. There was a bit of a mishap at the bar and a guest had a drink and glass spilled on him. No one was hurt and everything was fine after. The bartender seemed very flustered. I ordered the tuna app and it was not the best tuna I've ever had. I wouldn't order it again, just a lot of soy type sauce on it. I then ordered the crispy wings. After sitting there for 20 minutes I had a bad feeling. I assumed the worst and indeed she never entered my order. At this point it was time to get ready to leave for the game. She rang them in after I said don't worry about it now there isn't enough time. She blamed the spilling of the drink suggesting I ordered the wings when that happened. Regardless if that was true which it wasn't it didn't need to be mentioned. She offered me a drink I declined. She offered it several times, no thank you. I asked for my check. She never came back!!!! I had to ask the other bartender to give me my check. And go figure guess what was on it, the wings! So then I had to ask the other bartender to take them off. Real inconvenient. Never heard from her again as the other bartender checked me out as if I asked for this experience. Nonetheless, I left them a hefty tip because the mediocre tuna wasn't their fault. And the male server he seemed nice. As I walked past after the game I didn't see her at the bar, curious if she went home for the night. Basan was alright. My friends and I picked it because when we looked at the menu online it looked promising and it was right next to Little Caesars Arena which we were heading to next. We weren't expecting it to be a shareable where you order portions of food for a table and share it all around. That being said, the portions weren't even big enough to share anyways. We ordered the corn dogs and chicken skewers which only came with two. The only things I actually enjoyed was the cheesy udon and the Kung pao cauliflower. I will give them kudos for having vegan options though. The service was good. They accidentally added two orders of corn dogs on our receipt, but kindly took it off when asked. The setting was made to be romantic with dim lights so you can't really take good pictures in there. Considering the expensive menu and the small portions, I would not go back. read more

After being in downtown Detroit for dinner, we were looking for a place to enjoy a night cap. Basan came listed and it was close by so we decided to check it out. Getting there: Basan is in the first floor of the Eddystone Apartments building and parking nearby shares with Little Caesars Arena so if it's an event day, close parking might be limited. From our spot in the lounge area, we saw people leaving the arena after a game so if you are going to an event there this could be a convenient place to stop before or after. We chose to sit in the lounge as we planned on just having a couple drinks. The ambiance was nice and the velvet couches were comfortable for lounging and relaxing. I can't speak to the food but all of the drinks and mocktails we tried were good. Service was attentive and all the staff we interacted with were friendly and professional. The only thing I didn't love was the bathroom location. You have to take stairs or the elevator down a level to get to the bathroom. It was inconvenient and since it is open to the whole building, I felt uncomfortable knowing anyone could access it and it wasn't attended. We went here for our first time, and it was to celebrate Valentine's Day. As you can imagine, reservations were pretty full. So we took a slot at 4:45. The ambiance of the restaurant is very nice. We are in the restaurant side near the windows. But the middle area with books and fireplace is very cozy. We started with two Valentine's Day cocktails, and for the life of me I can't remember the names. Mine was something Sunset, and my wife got something with lime. They were both very tasty. We decided to get several smaller plates and one main course. We had the firecracker shrimp bun, I very much enjoyed it. The flavor was fantastic, a little difficult to split between two people, but very good. We had the octopus skewer, my wife really enjoyed them. I thought they were just ok. I prefer calamari to octopus, for me it's a little too chewy (octopus). The flavor wasn't bad, it was just ok for me though. The Ahi Tuna Poke, we both really enjoyed this. It was tasty and fresh, and the flavors worked very well together. My only complaint is the tuna is chopped in very small pieces. I like when you get tuna in small slabs, I feel like that would have worked better when trying to balance all the other ingredients together so you can have it in one bite. The small pieces were hard to keep together to get everything in one bite. Again, I'm nit picking, but in my opinion larger slices would be better. We had the crab mozzarella sticks, sooooooo good. Easily one of the best things we tried, they were fantastic. Our main we split was the rainbow trout, it was excellent. The fish was perfectly cooked, the sauce and flavors were great, this was my favorite of the evening. For dessert we had to try the tofu donuts and they did not disappoint, they were awesome. The customer service was on point from when we walked in until we left everyone greet us. They were very nice and helpful. The place had a really nice atmosphere. It was relaxed with an upscale feel. The food was amazing. So most of the plates are small plates for two people. We had the Brussels sprout bao bun, shrimp bao bun. I recommend the Brussels sprouts. We also had the tornado potatoes, miso cabbage, and kung pao cauliflower. The cabbage and cauliflower were very flavorful, the sauces are great. For entrees we shared the walleyed and udon. Both very good. I loved the udon. Dessert we had all three the tres leche the cardamom whip was so wonderful. I could have had that by itself. Went to see Childish Gambino at LCA(which was incredible btw), and stumbled upon Basan, which is located right across the street from one of the LCA entrances. SO glad we stopped in! The whole staff was wonderful, especially our server Faith! They were well coordinated with one another and were kind enough to ask if we were going to the show and accommodated us so well trying to be on time for it. The vibe is very cool and clean, no complaints there. The drinks were great. The server that seated us recommended perfect ones for my boyfriend and I. All the food was delicious, we had the unagi roll, a few Bao buns(the Brussels sprouts one I had was mouthwatering! Came into Detroit for a concert on a Sunday and decided to walk to the game from our hotel... this place is right next to Little Caesars and I would highly recommend stopping in if you're there or anywhere else in the city for that matter. Had a great experience at Basan. Made dinner reservations for 5:30, but we decided to head in at 4:30 to see if they could seat us early since we realized doors to Ed Sheeran opened at 6. The hostess was very friendly and was able to accommodate us immediately. Alex was our server, and she was awesome! She was knowledgeable on the menu, gave us a a few recommendations on dishes to try, and also went over drink recommendations. We were asked to order everything at once so that the kitchen could time out our food properly, which we happily obliged. Their menu is not extensive, so it was easy to pick a few dishes from each section. We ordered the following: Lobster Bun, Octopus Skewer, Ahi Tuna, Scallop Motoyaki, and Branzino. The Lobster Bun, Scallop Motoyaki, and Branzino were by far our favorites! The Lobster Bun was stuffed with meat, so you were actually getting more lobster than bao bun with every bite. Well worth the price. The Scallop Motoyaki, we are still talking about today. The scallops were buttery and paired perfectly with the roe and garlic chips. The Branzino was light but was very meaty. It tasted super fresh. For drinks, we got the Basa Basa Old Fashioned, the Shibuya, the Bachelor Hall, and the Bangarang Spritz. We liked all of the drinks except for the Shibuya. The flavor was just not something that we preferred. Toward the end of our dinner, Alex gave us two glasses of champagne on the house to celebrate my birthday, which I really appreciated! Then, inebriated us almost fumbled the experience by accidentally giving her a 10% tip (sorry, Alex!), but we were able to go back in to the restaurant and adjust our tip once we realized our math wasn't mathing. Basan was difficult to rate as overall as there was some great food, and was not a bad experience, with the exception one very low point, but it wasn't there for the price point. So if you read no further: Do not order the short ribs. As other reviews have mentioned, they are very fatty. Cut thin, and the darkness of restaurant did not help, but parts were so chewy it became almost inedible. Which is too bad as the flavor is actually very good. I understand short ribs are fatty, but these were not done well (see Takoi). On to the good: We also shared a couple buns, meatballs, the spiraled potatoes, and the fish. All of these dishes were good, but particularly the buns were very overpriced for what they were. The meatballs were awesome, but tiny. The cocktails were great, while also pricey, the price was similar to other places in the area. The ube cocktail in particular seems to become a signature of theirs. I would return to their bars area for cocktails and maybe bites, but based on my experience I would not do a full dinner in the near future. read more
