The staff is friendly, and this is located in a strip mall, and there is plenty of parking They have all sorts of Asian produce and dry, canned goods and frozen items as well that you don't typically find in major grocery stores. In the back of the store, they have a hot food area, where they display Filipino dishes for the day, which is supplies last, so I tried to come here as early as I can so that I would have all the options to pick for lunch. They also continue serving their dishes while supplies last and they have combo meals which is affordable and they also have seating area where you can enjoy your food. If you want to sample something don't be shy ask if you can have a taste so you can decide if you would like to order that dish or not. You could also order Filipino catering food here as well, which you would order at the cashier register and depending on how far you are located from the store you can also have delivery as well. Overall, it's a nice local Asian store. I would highly recommend to come here and take a look and enjoy their dishes as well. I will definitely come back here.

We arrived on a Saturday just after noon and plenty of parking spaces were available in the parking lot. The restaurant was very spacious with Filipino decor throughout. Approximately half of the tables were occupied with diners and my party was seated right away. We were pretty hungry and ordered several items to share family style. Pork sinigang arrived first and had the distinct tamarind flavor I expected without overpowering the rest of the dish. Lechon kawali came next and the pork belly pieces were cut into perfect bite sized pieces full of flavor and crunch; the lechon tasted good with and without the liver gravy sauce. Crispy sisig arrived on a sizzling plate and was seasoned very well in the mixture of sauce and onions; I liked that the pieces of pork were mostly meat unlike other places which like to sneak in cubes of fat. Crispy pata kare kare was the next dish to arrive and at first glance the portion was huge; the portion was very generous with pork and vegetables and was very delicious. Lastly, we had BBQ pork and chicken skewers, each of which were marinated and grilled very well. To drink, I had the sago gulaman which was very refreshing and had the right amount of sweetness. Overall, I was very impressed with my lunch at Hong Ning. Aside from the generous portions, the dishes were not too oily or salty and it is rare to dine at a Filipino restaurant that prepares its food in way that doesn't feel like it is clogging up arteries. Along the wall in the back by the restroom is a collage of Filipino and Filipino American celebrities that dined at the restaurant, which surprised me for a restaurant in the suburbs. I highly recommend Hong Ning for anyone craving a great Filipino meal while in the Carol Stream area.

You can tell from the pictures we ordered a little bit of food not too much and let me tell you everything actually turned out surprisingly delicious. I do find the Filipino food is a little bit of hit or miss, especially in the states. However, everything was delicious. In fact, we only had a little bit of leftovers and managed to clean the plates of everything else. This place is truly authentic. You can still tell that it's owned by a family, which I think is fantastic. The decor is incredible as well. But most importantly for me, which is not how photographic the places, but rather the quality and the taste of the food. One fun thing is that the café next-door is also owned by the family that owns this restaurant. And so you can order food and desserts from the next-door and they'll bring it over to you at the restaurant. I will do a separate review of the café as well. Another fun thing was that as we were on the way out from dinner, we noticed that they were setting up a traditional kamayan set up on a table nearby for a party of six. We had the privilege of meeting the owner and he helped tell us about their set up their pricing and also that quite frankly you can customize us any way that you like. It is the classic set-up, where you pick a base (usually rice) and the protein (usually raw fish), and enhance the texture and flavor by directing the counter person to add various toppings and sauces. The counter person was very friendly, giving us plenty of time to make our choice. She was also generous with the toppings, and I'm pretty sure she would have customized it anyway we want. The prep area was very clean, tidy, and organized, with each bin fully stocked with the prescribed ingredients. There is only one size, with one large scoop of fish and rice being the base, and it's plenty. Some toppings are extra: if you get the basic with tuna and no extra-costing add-ons, it is $12. I ended up getting a predefined bowl called the Da Kine (Marinated tuna) for $13, and it was good: nice mix of flavors and made it simple. Some differences from previous poke places we've been: -- they offer a sushi rice option, taking the same hot white rice, and squirting a sushi (vinegar and sugar) mixture on top of it. In my case, it didn't really add much. -- they have a premarinated tuna option, along with the unmarinated. Some places are now letting you choose your sauce spice mix first, and then marinating your protein choice for you right there. It's a bit more work, but I think it does add something worth it. The marinated tuna that I had was fine, but definitely lacked the absolute 'wow' when eating just freshly cubed ahi tuna. It looks like the Poke Bros are THE place for Poke all around Chicagoland, and they have found a good place to source their ahi and salmon (hopefully) daily, as good as can be expected this far from the ocean.
