I frequent Bartaco because the tacos and drinks are amazing, and its cheap in comparison to a lot of other mediocre spots around it. I haven't had a better pork belly taco yet! Last night I called to make a reservation for my sister, our friend, and I on the patio and the host was very sweet and helpful over the phone. After a long day at work I was excited to finally go back to Bartaco, eat and drink and enjoy the weather and company. As expected, service looks different because of the pandemic we're in, but that shouldn't take away from the actual service you receive. I work at a restaurant in Boston as a server so I have first hand experience with what the restaurant industry looks like during COVID-19, but this was just unacceptable.
My sister sat down while I parked the car and she was greeted by a young woman (our server) in that first interaction, and for the rest of the time we were seated our server came not ONE time. During the whole meal I didn't know my servers name, she never came to greet me or our friend who go there 15 minutes after I had. She never said hello, never asked how the food or drinks were, never asked if we were okay or needed anything.. ZERO interaction with us during the entire meal. It was strange.
What frustrates me the most is that at the end of the day, there isn't much of a service aspect if guests are made to order everything online, CHECKOUT, and then leave a tip, before we are provided with a service and before the food has even hit the table. I respect keeping everything as contactless as possible as almost every restaurant in the city is doing, but that shouldn't compromise the guests experience. Anytime we needed something or had a question about something, our server was everywhere else but attending to us. She deliberately avoided us. There were a couple food runners/bussers that assisted us as best they could but it was very disappointing to go out to eat, have a "server", and not be served. Some of the issues we faced: only had one set of silverware, someone dropped guac and chips off at our table before we placed our order and we weren't sure if it was complimentary or an accident, we had a question about a couple of the drinks on the menu, we ran out of water etc. All things that our server is there to help us with as guests, but she never came over.
The fact that we as guests, are made to tip before a service is even provided to us is ABSURD. Unless that tip is for the kitchen staff who produced the amazing food we ate, our server didn't deserve a tip because she never even spoke to us. I tip based on the kind of service I'm given like every other guest does. When you go to pay for your food an automatic 20% tip is ALREADY calculated into your total. It's not till the very end, right before you submit payment does it give you the option to change it. Even then, you don't realize you have the option to customize a tip unless you're looking extremely closely because my sister was able to customize her tip and I wasn't. It's wrong to expect 20% when you've done absolutely nothing to deserve it. I hope they pool because our busser/food runner did all the work.
It's hard being in the service industry and feeling so negative about a dining experience because I wouldn't normally complain about it, but this had to be said. Next time I go to Bartaco, I'll order everything to go and find a place to sit and eat outside in the area because this was super disappointing. read more
