This place has become one of my favorite restaurants, especially on a gorgeous spring day. Don't be fooled by its simple exterior. Or, if you are lucky, maybe they have rolled open the whole front wall and given you a peek inside. First tip, go to the website before you head downtown. They have an easy "add me to your waitlist" option that I have always taken advantage of, especially after reading some earlier reviews on Yelp. We had dinner there on a busy Saturday night, with college graduations and Mother's Day around the corner. However, because of adding ourselves ahead of time, we basically walked right into a table. Also, with their pretty inventive order style, we got to choose the pace of our dinner. Each table has a QR code. You add yourself and your guests to your table, and everyone can order either on their own or as a group. It makes it super simple to order exactly what you want, when you want it. This goes for drinks, apps, and the whole menu. This also makes paying the bill super easy and quick. The food is outstanding. Great flavor combinations and a good variety of combinations. On Saturday, our absolute favorite was the baha fish taco. The batter had amazing crunch and delicious seasoning. Oor other standouts include the Tuna tataco, the duck birra, and of course the guacamole! We also love the three table side sauces in the condiment caddie. My advice: taste a little bit of each one, as they have distinctly different flavors. And some HEAT. Staff is super friendly and work as a team. You have a main point person but you'll have different runners throughout your dining experience. I've also heard their bar can make a killer cocktail. Bartaco is a fun hip place right on king street! We only had to wait 15 minutes for a table. I really enjoyed their drinks and appetizers. We ordered the small dip trio for 3 people and it was the perfect amount! They will give you more chips if you ask, too. I loved the different flavors of the rojo and verde salsas, and they had a bit of a kick to them too. The spicy margarita was actually spicy! It was really good. Now the part I didn't like: the tacos. They were SO TINY. I've never seen tacos so small AND they were like $4 each. For a full meal, you would probably need 5 tacos. The fish was disappointing to say the least. It was the teeniest piece of fried fish and it was more breading than fish. So, I would come back here for drinks and apps but not for dinner. read more

Hostess was friendly and sat me immediately after a long day of work with no food I forgot the Bar Taco ordering process but had the kindest server. Didn't get my servers name but she was probably the only server working on a Thursday afternoon and is a Rockstar! Started with a glass of sangria, chips and spicy salsa. Spicy salsa is the way to go and compliment the sangria. Ordered 2 tacos 1 ribeye and should have ordered second, chili lime shrimp taco and black beans, perfect meal. Came in for dinner, and we were told there would be a short 15 minute wait. Thinking nothing of it, we walked over to the bar to order a drink. The first sign of trouble was the $16 margaritas. While yes, they're made fresh, dude, it's a 16 dollar margarita. So as the 15 minute wait expanded into a 30 minute wait and beyond, I noticed the tacos going to all the patrons were very small. I did not see a manager but came back in and she was still talking I said you need to stop talking and serve she said what ? I love Bartaco and have been in multiple different states!! I was excited that they opened in Charleston and have been multiple times and am never disappointed. Yes, the portions are small. I never order tacos as I don't think they're a great value, but the rice bowls are reasonably priced and always leave me full! The margaritas are great. The manager on was really kind, helpful, and funny. It looks like I'm in the minority, but I actually really like the phone ordering/paying because you can keep putting in more food and also leave when you're ready regardless of how busy it is, vs waiting for a server to come by! read more

She was so nice and still quick with all their patrons and fresh margaritas. Probably the best spicy margarita I've ever had. They have awesome decor too! We've had Bartaco in Boston Seaport a couple times, and the Fish tacos are always amazing. In Charleston, the size of the fish varied alot, and was generally smaller than Boston. They are still good, but I cant give it 5 stars if I compare to Boston. The Cechive was excellent, but spicy. Like real spicy, but addictively so. A nice spot for a quick lunch. I started with the Sangria and my sister had the Spicy margarita. Both were made with fresh ingredients and were absolutely delicious. Best sangria I have had in awhile! We had the small trio of salsa and guac and then a mix of tacos on tortillas and lettuce. Our favorites were the duck, the pork belly and the cauliflower. Everything was fresh and cooked to perfection. The restaurant is vibrant and they have thought clearly about how to set it up. To top it off, we made new friends at the bar. Bartaco is the best option for Mexican food on King Street (if it wasn't for Matador, possibly the best DT). Their food is fresh, flavorful, and portion controlled. The taco seasonings used here are incredible and their secret little sauces are extra gems to the tastebuds--go for the jalapeño sauce (epic). Best tacos we have had down here thus far. Our top competitor for them was a restaurant in Folly Beach but Bartaco got an extra star! However, if you're a wino, I don't recommend ordering wine here. They serve white wine warm-ish (not cold, that's for sure) and also in a whiskey glass which gets warmed-up pretty quickly. They put mine in a coupe glass so that my hands wouldn't make my Sauvignon Blanc even warmer, haha--thank you!!! Manager walks around nonstop. In fact, we saw him more than our actual waiter and had to ask him for extra trays, napkins and our check. They were about to get slammed though due to the happy hour starting! The overall aesthetic here is so welcoming. We loved the hanging basket light fixtures, mural walls and bright colors used throughout the restaurant. Restrooms were clean! By far the worst restaurant to get delivery orders from. They make Chipotle look fast. Great people. But they will never be straight forward. No transparency. If you ask the staff directly "Are they just firing the food right now?" They will almost always answer "They are just finishing up..." The order will be awhile. Granted the staff was all new... I watched the three waitresses stand and gossip at the bar the whole time. Thankfully the expo came out to inform me of "The Guacamole problem". It was super slow at Bartaco. If you want to eat Bartaco food go to the restaurant in person. Do not waste your time with Ubereats or Doordash. Worst delivery service in Charleston. On a side note. The management and supervisors are great! Friendly. Charismatic. And helpful. Grade A Management. The atmosphere is warm and peaceful. The food is above average. Note, this shitty review is all based around their delivery set up and the waitstaffs lack of transparency and honesty. Be straight forward. This is based on a year of mostly avoiding their delivery orders. Worst dt Charleston take out set up. If you want delivered Mexican inspired food you're better of ordering El Jefe, Juanita Greenbergs, Pink Cactus, or Santis. The food will be equally as good. It was loud, the service was slow, and when drinks finally came, the barback slammed them down, gave us the wrong ones, laughed, and ignored me when I spoke up. I used to be a five star fan of Bar Taco. The Charleston location has a stunning interior and design albeit a lack of restroom capacity. The menu is more limited without carnitas, Al pastor or traditional beef options as in the past or other locations. The food was generally tasty, but underwhelmed. The street corn is fresh and well done. Chips, guac and salsa good. Baja taco was average dominated by a large piece of fried fish (no grilled options). Glazed pork belly taco was the highlight. Sesame rib eye not as generous as in the past. The menu has strayed from more traditional Mexican offerings. Having a few tacos from a local food truck recently that were authentic and hearty indicates the new options that are available. Tacos at Bar Taco were bettered created in the past. You can't get a fresh, clean margaritas at a food truck. This is something that Bar Taco does well. No Mexican dark beers and limited selection. The service is a challenge (March 16 at noon). You can't easily order a custom drink. You use a QR tag to order everything. Makes it transactional. Feels like a fast food restaurant. Servers checked in only occasionally. Super friendly servers. It didn't accelerate the time to table. The 20% tip assessed is rich given the level of service. No rush to go back. read more

My family and I have been waiting for a few years now for Bartaco to finally open here in Charleston. We have been to six other Bartacos and can attest to the quality, consistency, and overall brand of their restaurants. We first went on the Saturday of opening week and were impressed with how they designed and decorated space. Bartacos tend to have a mix of basket-based light fixtures and a "beachy" theme which fits very nicely with the overall Charleston scene. All of the staff was incredibly welcoming and attentive throughout our meal. It was a really nice blend of the usual Bartaco friendliness and southern hospitality. We started off with the Reviver and Pomegranate Caipirinha cocktails which were both very refreshing and not too sweet. Appetizer wise we went with the chips and guacamole and an order of esquites. For the main course, we got ourselves duck tacos, fried oyster tacos, and pork belly tacos. Chips and guacamole were good, nothing too crazy but good, and the esquites had a nice blend of cream, corn, and spice. The tacos were flavorful and had the exact same quality, if not better, than all of other Bartacos that we have visited. I cannot stress enough that it is very rare to find consistently delicious food, especially in a specific restaurant group. Now, just to attest to how good Bartaco Charleston is, we decided to go again on Sunday to celebrate my sister-in-law's birthday. We switched it up and instead ordered tortilla soup and a pork belly rice bowl (arguably one of my favorite meals) and got to enjoy some very fluffy churros for dessert. My wife also ordered a Green Margarita which, like the Reviver and Pomegranate Caipirinha, was very refreshing. All in all, Bartaco is a perfect spot to grab lunch or dinner and we are so thankful that they finally opened up in Charleston. Both days we had JoJo and Dougie as our bartenders, Both get an A+ on their drink skills but get an A+++ on their customer and people skills!!! Try the Margarita (specials rock)!
