It was my birthday weekend and I love to treat myself as a tradition to loaded nachos to celebrate! I heard somewhere that you cannot consume calories on your birthday. It sounds like a myth, but I'm going with it. Haha! My family and I were able to make a reservation at Barrio Queen, easily via OpenTable. Their patio was available if you wanted to sit out there, but really it was closed because of the heat so we sat inside. We had a nice, spacious booth for the four of us and the hostess was super sweet and accommodated us right away. We were greeted by our server, Hanna, who was absolutely amazing. The service was so fast. She listened to everything and she was super sweet to the kids. The kids got to color while they waited for their milk and they ordered off of the kids menu. It's very family, friendly and for 8 to 9 dollars you can get your meal, drink, side, and dessert for the kids which I think is a great price. My son ordered the cheese quesadillas and my daughter had the steak tacos. They had rice and beans and fruit as their sides and a drink of milk. Later they would get ice cream for their dessert. When we went, it was about 430 on a Friday and they have happy hour between three and six so we ordered mostly off of the happy hour menu. I ordered the watermelon agua Fresca and summer fajitas off of their seasonal menu while my husband ordered tortillas, tacos, and quesadillas off of the happy hour menu. I thought the happy our menu was amazing. For five dollars each plate you can get so much food. Altogether we were in and out and about an hour. The place itself was lively. Parking is plentiful outside in the lot. Prices are beyond reasonable. The music is fun and upbeat. You have to get the guacamole. They bring over the car and make it there right in front of you and it's delicious and healthy, too! Hanna told us the way to get such flavor and everything they make is just to roast everything. Good tip. We also had Joe, the manager come over to make sure we had everything we needed. Altogether, my family and I had the best time. My husband even said this is a five star experience and my son said this is the best place ever! My daughter loved the music and was dancing the whole time. If my family is happy, I am happy. Truly a great place to spend my birthday. Also, Hanna brought over a complementary birthday dessert. A lava, chocolate cake with ice cream and strawberries on the side. Doesn't get much better than that. We will be back, Barrio, Queen! Which I believe stands for neighborhood queen. I wanted to share feedback about our visit tonight during happy hour. We usually have great experiences at Barrio Queen, which is why this stood out. Unfortunately, service was very inattentive. At the beginning, our server offered water and we requested four waters, but they were never brought until we asked again. Throughout the meal, we repeatedly had to request basic items such as utensils, salsa..etc. What was most disappointing was that our server never checked back on our table to see if we needed anything or how our meal was. The next interaction we had was being handed the check, which made us feel rushed and as though the goal was simply to get us out the door. We enjoy Barrio Queen and have had much better experiences in the past, so I wanted to bring this to your attention in hopes that it can be addressed. read more

I wanted my review to go up in star rating (1st visit was a generous 4 stars) but, even if I'm feeling generous, I have to say this time was not as good. Server was great - both times. Ambiance is fun and modern. But the food was not. It's like no one tastes what they are serving. This time I ordered the Chili Relleno de vegetales. The sauce tasted like warmed up salsa tbh. The dish was watery (see photos). The relleno did not appear to be breaded or fried. It was a pretty wet Chili filled with corn, cheese bits and other veg. $19. Just not good. Idk why I even took the rest of it (I ate about 1/3rd before I tapped out) to go as I tossed it in the trash as soon as I got home. It came with a generous side of beans that were epic in their saltiness! Just not good. A manager stopped by to ask how things were but I hadn't had more than a taste of my food. He was nice tho. I ordered the Jamaica Agua Fresca and it was so overly sweet that I dumped an entire glass of water in it to decrease the sweetness. And when I say sweet, it was sweeter than extra sweet tea. Had it been diluted, it would've been the highlight of the meal along with the free chips. I keep hoping they work out the kinks but I am not dying to come back. Which is too bad because I can see they are trying. It appears most of the problems stem from the back of the house. Barrio Queen is such a vibrant and festive spot--an absolute blast of an atmosphere paired with some seriously crave-worthy food! The guacamole? Oh my goodness...SO good. And those pops of pomegranate? Total game-changer--adding the most perfect little burst of sweetness and texture in every bite! I went with the trio of enchiladas, served with refried beans and rice, and it felt like such a treat to enjoy a full, delicious meal that's gluten-free (quick heads up: the carne asada is marinated in beer, so if that's a concern for you, you'll want to skip that option!) We always have the best service on taco Tuesday. Avie and Hanna are always the best waitresses and we always have fun with both of them.

I recently dined at Barrio Queen and unfortunately had a very disappointing experience. The food was far from what I would consider authentic, the salsa on the enchiladas tasted bitter, having made plenty of red sauce at home myself I'm very familiar with how typical chilis such as Guajillo, used in this cooking style should taste like. All enchiladas missed the mark. But, the biggest issue was the refried beans, they tasted extremely sour, and rancid as if they had gone bad. This really ruined the meal. To our server's credit, she was attentive from start to finish and genuinely tried to make things right by having dishes remade and even doubling up on rice. What was most disappointing, though, was that when the bill came, there was no adjustment or acknowledgment from management, despite it being clear that the dining experience had not gone well. I still tipped our server 20% because the issue was not her fault, but this is where management should have stepped in. To make matters worse, I ended up with an upset stomach. This was our first visit here since moving here in July 2024. We arrived on a Saturday night after church at about 5:15 PM. There was still plenty of seating and a band was scheduled to play outside. Travis was our server and he was excellent. We would definitely ask for him next time. He was very friendly and really on top of things. Within just a minute of sitting down he'd already brought our chips, salsa and waters. He shared his recommendations which were right on point. We requested a special margarita which he wrote down the ingredients and brought it back. Nice! We ordered the winter special of the birria chimichingas and they were amazing! They came with rice and beans, which were some of the best we've ever had. We wish this would be on the menu all year round. The salsa that came with the chips was not spicy, but it had a nice little smoky flavor. Delish. I ordered the birria queso tacos, and a Carne Asada taco. The steak taco was pretty good, but the Quesa birria taco was excellent! They are both street taco size, which was fine for me as I shared my husband's rice and beans and had one of his five chimi-chingas. We had the best fajitas that we've ever had! We ordered the combination steak and chicken. The flavor was amazing and the ratio of veggies to meat was just right. Also, the complimentary salsa was so good!! Used it as an addition to the rice as well as just for my chips. The server we had was also great. We were one of her first tables as we were there for lunch. My SIL tends to give servers a hard time (in a funny way) and she handled it perfectly! Not worth the price. I've had better food at Taco Bell. Ordered the carne asada burro made a change to it and had black beans in it which was not flavorful at all and very little meat and what meat I had was fat and grizzle. My granddaughter ordered taco and was not impressed at all. Definitely will not return. Service was good but kitchen was slow for as few people that were inside. This place is over priced for what food they offer. Went there tonight and sat at the bar. They delivered the wrong dinner. The manager said she works bring more chips and never did. They tried to replace my meal but it never came out and the person I was with already finished her dinner, so we just left and I never ate. Super poor service and I'd never go back. Mom and I ate here last night. Very nice artwork with lots of fun things to take in. Bright and clean, modern Mexican style. Server named Landon could not have been nicer. He made our guac with pomegranates table side. It was the best guac I've ever had. The skinny margaritas in cute glasses were excellent. Our food was perfect. Absolutely terrible and weird. First of all, our server was really nice. Now that I think about it, I think she was trying to make up for what she knew was going to come which had nothing to do with her and everything to do with how horrible the food is. We ordered the guacamole appetizer. It was made at our table by our server. The weirdest guacamole recipe I've ever seen - who puts pomegranates in guacamole? Barrio Queen does, that's who. The guacamole was barely mixed up and the pomegranates were just sitting in the middle of it. Super weird. We also ordered the chicken quesadillas as an appetizer. They came out cold and seasonless. I ordered for my main meal two of the Camaron asado tacos. I should've heeded the previous reviews and skipped these. I found one shrimp on each taco. But it was full of purple cabbage. They were also very watery. Again, super weird. I was in town visiting family and therefore I had never been to this place. It was recommended by my sister. I didn't want to be rude and complain but upon arrival on a Saturday evening there were barely any people inside- that should've been a clue. I often read yelp reviews as a measure of people's true experience of a restaurant, this is my first post. Way to often we go home disappointed in our experience In New places. For this reason we tend to circle back to our favorite over the years (barrio queen). After having an early dinner out on new years eve we left extremely disappointed in our meal. From Soupy queso (was easily able to suck through a straw) and pescado tacos with the consistency of mashed potatoes to service that felt pretty uncaring. The kicker... on the way home my wife said "I would have been happier with taco bell considering the cost". I haven't been able to shake that comment. Do better in 2026 or you will lose more of your local customer base. read more

The only thing that is worth coming back to this place is the margaritas. The service is spotty, took too long to get our drinks/appetizer, and to put in our food order. I do have to shoutout one of the guys here for checking on us and getting us chips/salsa when our server was busy with other tables for long periods of time. They were busy and I think they only had one server outside which falls back on management, there should've been 2-3 servers outside with how busy it was with it being a Friday evening. Most of the time the portions are so small for the price. Have to mention I think it's fun for the kids to have an area to play outside but it's very loud and distracting which can be annoying while eating. read more

Had the best experience here. I don't usually write these, but we just had an excellent time. My family came in during a rush with a large party. The staff was obviously flustered and busy but you wouldn't have been able to tell with our waitress Avie! She was Jonny on the spot! We had a group of 9 and never had to wait on drinks, got food ordered quickly. The time took a bit because of our party size, but she was constantly checking I. We got the nachos and they were good nothing crazy to rave about! They do not serve queso on the side but they were still fine. We also ordered carne asada tacos which were also just fine! I think our experience would've been 10 time better if our waitress was friendly and nice. At a certain point my friend was so confused cuz our waitress seemed to roll her eyes at us! The simple change of what were the best chips of any Mexican restaurant in Phoenix to the new thin, weak, and odd textured ones doesn't bode well for them. I ordered the birria taco, which arrived a bit soggy, but fantastic flavor. It is not fried on the exterior, so notate the preference. Ordered a side of rice and beans and it's enough to share between 3 people. Wow! The pozole was yummy too! Great frozen mango margarita too! We had dinner there two days ago for my father in laws 70th birthday. 1. My daughter was served a taco plate with worms in her food. No kidding - live worms. 2. The manager was devastated and called the GM. They comped us 50% of the meal. Which I thought was crazy, if you find actual worms in your food, that should be full comp with an apology. 3. The server then told us that Barrio Queen management doesn't normally allow them to give anything special for a birthday but this one time they would allow my father in kay to have a small children's churro!
