I believe Barrio Queen is a chain Americanized Mexican place in the Phoenix area. There were several locations when we searched for them online.. we went to the one on Tatum, which was located inside a little shopping center in the burbs. Barrio was huge!! With both indoor and outdoor seating! We had a fairly large party and decided to sit outside for some fresh summer air. Wrong decision! It got super hot!!! Especially after all the Mexican food. The tableside guacamole was made to order.. you guessed it, tableside! The addition of pomegranate was a bit different but was a good mix to traditional guacamole! The Queso flameado was a win! Cause who can go wrong with melted cheese and chorizo?! The only downside was that they only gave us 3 tiny tortillas to go with all that Queso. They specialize in tacos but I ordered the Cochinita Pibil cause it was marked "award winning@ and it didn't disappoint. The meat was tender and the sauce was fantastic! I think everyone enjoyed their food.. though the margaritas were super sweet and didn't contain very much alcohol. The Tres Leches also came in a jar and was lacking the milk drenched cake cause it was filled with cream. A good place to have a dinner for a large party, with a great ambiance and nice decor. Food was also pretty delicious for a chain restaurant, though you can't go in with very high expectations. read more

We'd been craving Mexican food for a few days and knew we had to go to the Desert Ridge Barrio Queen. We had our favorite waiter Horacio, who always gives us the best service! Thank you Horacio for a great night! read more

I used to go to the now closed Barrio on 16th St. and was never disappointed. This corporate spinoff from one of the former owners of Barrio makes it just another Mediocre Mexican food chain restaurant. The only thing I found nice about this restaurant were the interior wall designs and nice outdoor patio seating. I went during lunchtime and the restaurant was only 1/3 full, but it took our server 10 minutes to get water to us, another 15 minutes to come back to get our orders, and she never returned to check on us once we received our food from a food runner. The requested sliced jalapenos were missing. The chips and salsa that are a complementary starter were mediocre at best. The chips were fresh and crisp. If you like tomato sauce with a quarter of a teaspoon of chili powder mixed in, this is your salsa. The cup of posole I received was edible, but I've had better out of a can. The chorizo refried beans were flavorless and bland and I'm not sure if there was chorizo in it. I also ordered their version of a Paloma and it was not balanced and far too sweet to complement the food. Barrio Queen is OK for tourists that don't care for spicy food. For those of us that enjoy a tasty and spicier meal, I suggest finding a Mexican food place with an Irish last name. read more

We had a wonderful night at Barrio Queen! Nick was our server and he was fantastic and made our experience very enjoyable.

We ordered wrong. We wanted more of a snack than a meal so we didn't experience the food enough to have an opinion.

Tried to find a place close to everyone we were meeting for dinner. We had a group of 8. Happened upon Barrio Queen. We were so happy! Overall, this is a gem in a mall area! Chips & salsa. Great. Food & drinks. Excellent. Service. Excellent. Vibe. Cool. Handling a group of 8 - amazing! Tacos - choose your filling - carne asada - delicious! My husbands dish? Can't recall. Maybe some one will know what it is? If you do know, I'll update this review. We were all please. When we get back to the area, we will be back. read more

Came here for a girls night dinner on Wednesday night around 6. Wasnt too busy and we were seated right away. Mike was our server and offered great suggestions and was really funny. I got the Queen Enchilada with carne asada and it was really good, very creamy. The veggies were kinda random. The churros were perfect to share and filled with caramel. Yum! Really looked this location. read more

Went here today for the first time in a bit and it still is excellent! Had the carne asada tacos and it's among the best carne I have had. Fresh and NOT salty. Our service was excellent and our server Ricardo was the best! He really is on top of everything going on. Great communicator as well as making sure the experience for us was the best. Wife had the Pazole Verde Bowl and loved it. Will definitely go here more often. read more

This review is from our one and only visit to this place a year ago. The server we had literally refused to let me order tacos without cilantro on them. Why this place is so popular, I have no idea. Even ignoring the cilantro that I couldn't pick off, the food wasn't very good. read more

Totally craving Mexican when my sis came to visit and this spot was literally a 5 minute drive and I've never ever dined in so we went for lunch. We ordered different types of tacos along with their guacamole and a couple of margaritas. Their drinks were really really good and pretty big size. The tacos had a lot of meat on it but it felt a bit lukewarm not sure if they waited til all the different tacos were ready. You can't go wrong with guacamole and theirs was very lime-y which I loved. We got the flan to top off the sweet craving and it was just plenty. Our server was super attentive and nice and we also got seated fairly quickly for a Saturday afternoon at desert ridge. The reason I didn't give this a 5 stars is cause my sister and I got mauled by mosquitos while we ate, we also saw flies around our food / table area. The worst part for me and maybe it's the combination of meat and sweet but I felt so nauseous an hour after eating and visited the restroom frequently as did my sister. Not sure if I would try this spot again but I did love the decor and ambience. read more

Barrio Queen offers tasty Mexican plates as well as tequila and mezcal based drinks. The tacos are good, with a local twist to the style you'd find in Mexico City, and enchiladas are fantastic, too. Some items are just about perfect - the beef taco reminds me of high-end barbacoa and is absolutely delicious - whereas some others like chicken taco is perhaps a bit less "authentic". The apetizers and desserts, such as coctel de elote, guacamole, flan, and churros, are prepared elegantly, and complement the experience. Barrio Queen is also one of only few places that serves chiles en nogada during their autumn season which distinguishes this place from the ordinary (although often great in their own genre) tex-mex venues. read more

My fiancé and I decided to grab lunch at Barrio Queen due to the glowing reviews I saw on Yelp. We ordered the assorted tacos, the Arizona burrito, and the Barrio guacamole that is made table-side. I absolutely loved the guac - the addition of pomegranate seeds was a new concept for us and added a level of flavor that I didn't know was missing! The tacos were overall bland and while the Arizona burrito was decent, it wasn't anything to write home about. Their outdoor seating area is lovely and parking in the plaza was easy on a Sunday. Since I was only wowed by the guac, I wouldn't recommend making a trip for this spot. We had just checked out from the nearby JW Marriott, so this was a good spot to grab a quick bite. Prices are just so-so for portion size. read more

Came to Barrio Queen with my mom for dinner and it was good! Cute outdoor patio area and I liked all of the decorations. There's also a bar area with tv's in addition to standard seating. The service was really slow for how empty it was, we had to call our server over when we were ready to order/pay and we didn't get water refills, but the food was pretty good! We shared the chopped salad and poblano enchiladas. Both were tasty and good portion size. It could be a fun spot to grab a margarita flight with some friends. There are dozens of Mexican inspired cantinas here in The Valley. But only a few worth calling Mi Casa, Barrio Queen is one of those places. We have eaten here many times and have never been disappointed. Half the seating is outside, in a COVID friendly space. They have a zillion heaters, so you won't get cold. The holiday lights on the tree in the center are year round and a nice touch. We would recommend starting off with drinks and a table side Guacamole. Barrio Queen's version includes pomegranates that created a nice taste. Another appetizer to try would be the Queso Fundito, which has a nice layering of flavors. As for entrées, we have tried and would recommend everything. But their Carne Asada and Al Pastor dishes are all outstanding. See attached photos. Enjoy! read more

I'm sorry but I found it quite bland. It wasn't authentic Mexican food at all. I was pretty disappointed with my meal and was surprised after the wait was so long. It's clearly a popular spot but after seating, it was also clear why this restaurant isn't frequented by the local Mexican population. The service was fantastic and the ambiance was fun, and colorful, so I would consider coming back for drinks but definitely not the food. read more

Barrio Queen had been sitting in one of my collections folders for quite awhile, before getting the chance to visit. I chose this location, because 1) I thought it was the original location, and 2) I thought it had a gift shop. I was wrong on both counts. Sort of. This location is not the original location, but that means nothing, especially after my visit. This restaurant IS very popular, and we had a short wait, with two other groups ahead of us and 2 behind us. We were able to check out the menu while we waited, and while not huge, it still took me some time to figure out what I wanted, even after we were seated for a few minutes. We were seated as far back in the restaurant as one could possibly get, and right outside the bathrooms. This wasn't as terrible as it sounds because it actually gave us privacy compared to many of the other tables. We had a good view of the bar, and all around us was various beautiful Dia de los Muertos decor. The bathroom even has fun DDLM murals! I ordered the Trio Enchiladas de Mole: 1 chicken, 1 pork, and 1 beef enchilada, each covered with a different mole: green for chicken, red for pork, and brown for beef. It was served with a side of sauteed vegetables, and black refried beans topped with cheese. I already knew I was going to get a margarita, but I wasn't sure what kind, until I saw the Death's Door on the menu. The name intrigued me because, in Wisconsin, we also have a Death's Door, but it is a whole different thing (look up the history of Door County). The Death's Door Margarita is Habanero, Jalapeno, and Chile de Arbol infused tequila, Ancho Reyes, Azunia Agave Nectar, and fresh lime juice. Being a sucker for spicy drinks, I of course had to have it. Remember how I said this place has a gift shop, sort of? Well, when you first walk in the door, there is a small area of merch to the left, including clothing and mugs. I had my eye on a skull mug, $18, but was going to think it over during dinner, and maybe grab one on the way out. Lo and behold, the Death's Door is $16 solo, or $28 with a skull mug! For a savings of $6, it was a no-brainer...I got the mug. Now, as we were settling up the bill, I asked our server about the mugs, assuming we would get new, unused ones (mine had a small area of peeling paint, and no, I was in no danger of consuming it). She said we could take the ones we had, or she could bring us new ones. We opted for new ones. Unbeknownst to us, she went to the merch shelf, and unexpectedly brought all of them to our table for us to choose! We thought she would either just bring us new ones, or tell us to pick ones off the shelf as we left. Overall, we had a good time, and everyone left stuffed and happy. This is one restaurant that I will DEFINITELY be returning to! 12/2023 read more

Its 100 degrees in Phoenix today and the have all the doors open. Its hot in here and there are flys everywhere. WTF

I usually have no faith in tex mex food, but decided to give this place a try since I had a gift card. Got it to go, but ambience looked nice, appreciate the live bolero band & the molcajete/guac station. I got the award winning cochinita pibil and that was one of the most trash food dishes I've ever had from a high standard place. 95% of the pork was fat. Service is probably nice but this place reminded me why I hate Tex mex read more

Loved the food and service. Had my favorite dish Black mole enchilada which was wonderful. The mole incorporated all the necessary spices plus unsweetened chocolate. Do yourself a favor and order it. Great food/drinks and cool vibes! We Love Bario Queen! We've only been to their Scottsdale and Desert Mountain locations, both are good! Friendly staff. They offer bar, inside and outside seating. Chips and salsa are always fresh and tasty! Try their guacamole, it's topped with pomegranate seeds - delicious! We love their chopped salad, it has romaine lettuce, queso fresco, diced red onions, red peppers, avocado, grilled corn, black beans, pomegranate seeds and tortilla chips. Served with chipotle dressing. Also recommend the Carne asada meal. Order an extra side of roasted Anaheim chiles - they are stuffed with cheese and very flavorful. read more

I grew up in California and I know what a good Mexican is and this definitely was not it. The place was overcrowded due to it being located at an outdoor mall. Took us about 20 minutes to get a seat and then about 30 minutes for them to even come and serve us. Only thing I can say that I really liked was the salsa and the refried beans that they serve when you get there. But the tortilla chips they tasted a little more store-bought than homemade. I don't think I would give them a second try if I was in town and I needed to choose Mexican food. Which is kind of disappointing because it's located in Arizona. And I know Arizona has some great Mexican food. Just having to choose this place because it was close to the hotel at the mayo clinic. read more

They changed their tortilla chips! Their previous chips were so thick and delicious! Their food is good and I especially like their taco selection. Their margaritas are excellent. My go to for American Mexican. Always fresh and yummy. Fun atmosphere as well. I go to the Desert Ridge location. Haven't tried the other(s)

I've been here twice for happy hour and have only increased my rating from 2 to 3 stars. I really wanted to like this place but I'm honestly struggling with the food & to be honest, some of the service as well. Hostess: lovely and seated us timely Waiter/server: while on the patio for in-person visit one. We ordered the "special of two tacos and a margarita for $12," the queso fundido with chorizó on the side, and a Margarita. The waiter brought us a shot of tequila and margarita. When we asked why the menu said "margarita" and we had a shot of tequila, he pointed to the tequila bottle on the menu and said "see, tequila." ‍ummmmm. Ok. Sure. We ordered another margarita and went on with it. My friend enjoyed her vegetarian tacos. The thing about the queso fundido that truly baffles me is actually being there at the restaurant and receiving a hot cast iron pan with cheese that melted but congealed still. The queso fundido also lacked any depth of flavor and definitely killed any desire I would have of ordering it again. Super disappointed. Happy hour visit two Hostess: lovely and sat us timely. In my opinion, TOO MANY PEOPLE in the restaurant and on the patio. While I understand Ducey lifted his restrictions, I do not agree and find it to be incredibly short sighted. That said, everyone wants to go out like the virus is gone or on it's way out. I will say there were even more people there by the time we left and it honestly did not make me want to come back again. For the food or for too many people and possibly contracting the virus. Waiter/server: pleasant enough and ok-ish on time. Not going to say too much about timing because I don't know the staffing situation and like I said, TOO MANY PEOPLE! In any event, he confirmed the "two tacos and margarita special" was in fact "margarita was not a shot of tequila," we ordered that again for both of us. My friend with the vegetarian tacos and me with the carne asada tacos. She enjoys the vegetarian tacos & says they are good. The carne asada tacos lacked seasoning on the actual carne asada. It NEEDED everything in the tortilla to give it depth and flavor. Let's not be hasty, it wasn't a lot of depth. Again, I really wanted to like this place. I know many do. I just can't get behind it. So disappointing. read more

The food was great, the drinks delicious. The service was not great, slow and forgetful. My parents had been here for a lunch earlier in the week and suggested we come back for a lunch as a group. Overall we had a decent visit, mostly thanks to the tasty food. Definitely DESPITE rather poor service. I was deciding on which cocktail I might want when I saw that they offer a margarita FLIGHT. It had two that I definitely was interested in trying and I am always keen to try more. So I was down. The Toloache (blueberry flavor) was my favorite. All the cocktails that were ordered, shared, and enjoyed amongst the table were delicious. As for our food, I got a selection of three tacos. The pescado (pretty dang tasty), chorizo (my fave almost everywhere that has a chorizo option, and that stands here), and the barrio pollo (my least favorite...a bit blah and bland in comparison to the other three). Non-premium tacos are three for $14 which feels pricy, but they were filling and tasty so under 15 bucks for a meal isn't bad. We also shared an order of the queso fundido for the table. It was good, but we very quickly ran out of tortilla chips which more than half our queso remaining. Getting a server's attention to ask for more chips was an ordeal. Not to mention getting waters refilled and another round of drinks...our whole visit could have been like 20 minutes shorter with more attentive service. We sat outdoors, in December 2022, which was lovely. They have heaters too, should that be requested. My mom wanted to ask that one be turned on near us, but again...getting someone's attention to do so was difficult. The food was good enough that if there was a future return trip to Phoenix, I would certainly not mind going back. But the one visit we had left something to be desired for our experience. read more
