Its a shame to only rate Fork with two starts because I was really looking forward to having a local area 'farm to table' restaurant that's small with an interesting menu that appears to be Charleston-like. Not what I experienced at all.
Last night was a gorgeous evening so after calling for a reservation and being told that only outside seating was left, this party of four was quite delighted to check out the new restaurant and sit outside for what we thought would be a great experience. Like many others who have offered feedback, I too had visited the previous establishments at this address and had been disappointed so I was quite excited about the buzz Fork's created.
My first disappointment was having been seated at the 4 round just outside the front door. Unavoidable so I'm setting aside that fact in my review.
We couldn't decide on a bottle of wine so ordered a couple of drinks which came pretty quickly. We had been given a 'briefing' on the menu choices and after looking them over we decided on a bottle of white and a glass of Malbec. Well, about 10 minutes later, we got a GLASS of white and a glass of Malbec. The server that brought the wine was confused b/c we had not order a glass of white - we'd ordered a bottle. After taking it away, she brought it back and said we could have it, and that she'd entered the order for the bottle. The bottle did come a few minutes later and was a very nice white wine but served at room temperature.
We ordered a few small bites (appetizers) that were OK. Nothing to brag about but nothing we would consider sending back. That said, when the appetizers came, the server had no idea who had ordered what so there was a shuffling of plates after the server set them down. When our server came back around for our dinner order and it was mine turn, this was the conversation...
Me: 'I see there's a chicken dish on the menu'
Server: 'Yes there is'
Me: 'OK, what sort of chicken'
Server: 'It's backed'
Me: 'OK. Is it 1/2 chicken, a 1/4 chicken....'
Server: 'Its a breast'
Me: 'I'll have the flounder'
I know this restaurant has only been open a month. And our server is on week 2 (we asked). The chicken is part of the permanent menu - there is NO reason that he should not have rattled off a description of the dish and sell it to me. Very disappointed about that.
Our dinner came and again, confusion as to who order what. We had a couple of flounder dishes, the short ribs and that Hadduck. The plates were large and the serving sizes small. The flounder is a very nice white fish with a subtle taste - all I could taste was the mountain of mushrooms. I'd order the Lemongrass, Five Spice & Local Mushroom Ragout and tasted NO lemongrass bc the mushrooms overwhelmed the fish. The ribs were very tasty and tender - excellent flavor profile. And this comes from someone who is a BBQ judge and knows his meats and sauces. I can't tell you how the Hadduck was because no comment was made one way or the other (that I heard, anyway)
Luckily, the company was good so we were OK paying the bill but I will not rush back here and not recommend it to my friends. No matter how interesting your food combinations look/taste, if you are going to charge high prices (the prices don't 'look' high but when everything is a la carte, it adds up) you need to 'wow' the diner. That, plus the fact that the servers can't get it right starting with drink orders and not being able to speak to a dish that is a permanent part of the menu, it's a disappointment as far as this diner is concerned. read more
