Michele Simmerer is an amazing stylist! I only get a proper haircut every few years and, when I decide it's time, I will book an appointment with Michele. Because she always gives me an amazing new look only using scissors for all the layering because when someone else used a razor to get layers once, I had tons of split ends shortly afterwards. And this bob will grow out beautifully. A few other friends see Michelle also and she makes them look fantastic also. Especially when they go in for color! read more

Michelle Simmerer cut my hair today and she did an excellent job. It's a joy to go to someone who truly enjoys what they're doing.

Michele Simmerer has been cutting my hair for many years, and never disappoints. I'm very conservative, and usually want the same cut everytime - Michele will do that, but also is really good about introducing small changes to my style that always work out well. I get compliments on my cut/style, even after it grows out. She's really skilled, and as a bonus, is fun! read more

Andrea is amazing. She does a great job listening to me and then she takes the time to explain in detail whether what I'm asking for is doable or not given my hair texture. I look forward to my visits and I get so many compliments. The other day I got a compliment on a zoom call. read more

I'm a new client of Michele Simmerer's, and I'm grateful I found her. She's an exemplary stylist. She approaches her work as an artist, and it's obvious she cares about her clients and craft. Michele has cut and colored my hair twice, and both times I've absolutely loved her work. When I see Michele, I feel comfortable telling her, "Do whatever you like." The end result is fun, creative, yet also presentable for my corporate job. I was somewhat nervous about getting my hair cur during a pandemic, but I felt completely safe with Michele. She observes numerous precautions to make sure her clients remain healthy. For example, she takes your temperature, maintains healthy ventilation in the salon, and regularly wipes surfaces with sanitizer. We both wore masks for the duration of my appointment. Michele is extremely personable, possesses a clever sense of humor, and offers great tips on how to style your hair at home. I can't recommend her enough, and I look forward to my next appointment with her. read more

Michele Simmerer is the Queen of Transitioning Your Hair Color! I'm going gray and Michele's skill and eye for color have allowed me to slow down my transition, but keep my natural color. Few people are as good at matching colors and predicting how a treatment will change over time. I can easily go 6 weeks between salon visits because Michele blends my color so that I don't get a "skunk stripe". My hair is down to the middle of my back, she's been coloring it for over a year and it feels healthy and luscious. She's the best for fun, innovative color and beautiful cuts. read more

I love how Michele Simmerer handles color- she did a great job on my hair both cut and color! She made some adjustments to my color and fine-tuned it to something I really wanted but wasn't sure was possible with all of the previous color I had done. She's so experienced with color it was like she had a magic wand. read more

Andrea is just the best, she's been cutting my hair for over 20 years! When we moved an hour away I tried others, but now I just make the drive, it's worth it. I don't usually have a clear idea what I want to do when I get there and she's great about asking questions and coming up with ideas. She gave me a great cut yesterday and today I got compliments everywhere I went, thanks Andrea! read more

Michelle is a breath of fresh air! So glad I took a chance and booked while I'm traveling the West Coast. Michelle is genuine and kind; she really enjoys what she does. I would definitely recommend. I'm going to try and see her again before I fly back to NYC. Thanks again, Michelle! read more

This is my third visit to Barnets salon, and it somehow keeps getting even better each time. My first two visits were with Andrea, who is professional and skilled as she is kind, thoughtful, and SO patient. For context, I am Indian with really thick naturally wavy black hair. Our goal was to bring me to near-platinum blonde with minimum damage, and somehow work around a semi-botched dye job that I got a few months ago at a different salon. After the first session, which Andrea talked me through so clearly (and with great conversation) I left with a dark strawberry blonde. The second time, she brought me up to a very light blonde and fixed any residual brassiness. I walked away feeling like my absolute baddest, best self. THANK YOU ANDREA! And then last night, I had an appointment with Rachel. I booked with Rachel initially because Andrea's slots were completely full before the holidays, and I had a good feeling that I'd be in trusted hands regardless. The appointment went so well, I'd gladly go back to either of them. Rachel was also so incredibly patient and kind, those 3 hours went by like nothing! She works so quickly and diligently, I walked away feeling extremely thankful. Rachel brought me up to a very nuanced golden blonde and my hair somehow feels even softer. I had made a few mistakes with the upkeep of blonde hair (I let it turn brassy! my bad!) and Rachel remedied my foolishness + gave me some amazing advice on how to move forward. Also, hair is not cheap! I made the mistake of trying to take the least expensive route in the past but that's how I ended up with a bad dye job. Barnets is honestly SO reasonable, if you consider the amount of labor + time + resources the stylists put in. They do some HARD work okay! It's absolutely worth it and it hurts my heart to even think of going somewhere else. Thank you for upgrading my entire life Andrea & Heather! read more

Michele S. listens to you on what you want your cut to be, and I'm always happy with my haircut there. I've had my hair cut by Michelle for many years. I always love talking to her and admiring her aesthetics and taste, particularly in visual kitsch art, and her great taste in music. After Covid, she added all the precautions to make it safe to get a haircut. read more

I love Andrea, she's been doing my hair for a couple of years now. My hair(cut) is fairly easy, but I have thick straight hair that needs more attention and I like that Andrea listens well to what I ask her to do. She pays attention to detail. Last night I went to a holiday party with my brand new awesome hair that Laura gave me. I was feeling pretty good about myself, I have to say, and it seemed like the crowd was agreeing with me. Several adorable boys used my hair as a pretense to talk to me, and this super stylish hipster girl told me she "just love[d my] hair. I think I have found my stylist for life. A million bajillion stars. For Laura and Barnets salon as a whole. Laura was my friend in college but I'd lost track of her. I kept hearing about how this friend and that friend had started seeing her and they seemed to look especially snazzy because of it. I had a bit of a hair misfortune at my regular stylist so I decided to see what Laura could do to repair the craziness atop my head. Laura was just wonderful in every way. She really listened to what I was looking for and gave really thoughtful suggestions. My haircut was great (and so was the head massage) and she is just so personable that it was a lot of fun too. Laura is a talented colorist, and I am into hair adventures, so I've given her free rein to do whatever she likes with my hair. She took me platinum the first time (with full instructions for how to keep my hair healthy) and she has recently added magenta, violet and aqua chucks in a very artful way. I walk down the street and everyone looks and I get stopped regularly by people who tell me they love my hair. I really can't see myself going to anyone else from now on. Not only can Laura create the unique styles I love, she has also given my friends lovely, subtle, flattering cuts that suit them perfectly. I find some of the negative reviews for the salon baffling. I've spent about six hours in there in the past couple months, and have met the owner and another adorable stylist, and found everyone to be so warm and friendly. The atmosphere was just great and so welcoming. Please take the negative reviews with a grain of salt because you will really have a great experience at Barnets! read more

Victoria has been cutting my hair exclusively since 2008. I am a dude (in the truest sense of the word), who is blessed with a ton of hair that grows fast and I play music on the regular, so the mop has to be tamed every now and again. I was raised on Super Cuts and shaved my own head in college. I never used hair gel or spray, and I was never the cute guy that all the girls wanted to date. Yet over the years I, too, have found the value in having a nice haircut, and just like anything else that is local and done by experienced hands, you get what you pay for. Victoria is down to earth and fun while maintaining a focused and professional demeanor. She gives great conversation (truly a huge part of the experience) and the scalp massage during washing is something I look forward to every time. Where Victoria really shines is her great & timeless sense of style. I was rocking the Billy Ray Cyrus look before I came to her (not really, but close), and she immediately got me looking more Rod Stewart/Dave Davies (good, right?), which immediately got me compliments and made me an object of desire among beautiful women. Fast forward a few years later and I've got salt and pepper in my hair; I'm no wild-eyed boy any more. Victoria has evolved with me over the years, always seeing a step ahead to who I am becoming. Now I'm rocking the short/neat look... and the compliments haven't stopped coming. After years of patiently steering me towards using hair products she has finally trained this monkey to do as he his told, and he is most grateful for it. She has always applied a practical approach and never tried to sell me on something I didn't want. When she does give advice is it always spot-on and realistic, I just haven't been open enough to listen to it right away, though eventually I come back around with my tail between my legs. If you are looking to make an affordable investment in your self, styling your hair is actually the easiest and least expensive way to do it. I don't know what I would do without Victoria, and I'm looking forward to giving her my business as long as there is hair on my head. The ladies already know what I'm talking about - it's just a matter of finding the right person, right? DUDE... don't waste your youth looking like a slob! read more

My second cut with Roberto and both times I end with "WOW". Roberto knows hair, especially Latina Hair! I have curly/wavy hair and he knew exactly what to do with it! To top it off, he's an amazing guy! Super friendly! And great convo! He's my official go to guy! read more

Ok, so I am writing this review specifically for astrud. She is amazing. A total gem in this sea of sf hairstylists. Here is the deal.. I am a hairstylist myself. I have owned an amazing and stylish little salon here in the city for over 10 years. I know an amazing artist when I see one. I actually interviewed astrud myself when she first moved here from new York. I was beside myself with excitement that we would have talent like her working in our shop. The thing is.. Astrud is not only talented but she is thoughtful, humble, crazy stylish, and has been taught from the best. Her fashion forward Sassoon inspired ways are special and artsy not just trendy. Sadly for me, astrud took another job. That being said, I am so impressed I send clients her way all the time. I am telling you this girl is the hidden gem. You won't be disappointed. I promise. I had been fantasizing about having big, heavy bangs for years, despite my fine hair (grass is always greener syndrome). I've had several people try several times to fulfill my hair fantasies, to no avail. My cowlick always made my hair lay awkwardly, and I had become resigned to the fact that my hair fantasies could never be actualized in reality. I made an appointment at Barnet's Salon with Astrud with the intent of getting my hair trimmed. She sat me down in her chair, and she asked the question, "Is there anything you've been wishing you could do with your hair?" So, I confessed that I would love to have 60s style bangs, but I just didn't think it was possible with my fine hair. She had a simple solution...pull more hair from further back to create the bangs and provide enough weight to thwart the cowlick. I came out of the salon with a really pretty, easy hairstyle that I can maintain. Oh, and Astrud was really sweet and easy to be around. Thank you Astrud and Barnet's Salon for a great haircut. I need to make an appointment again soon. read more

I've hemmed and hawed about writing this review for a few weeks... I was in need of a haircut, and am still a bit of a newbie to California. Barnets was close to my house and get awesome Yelp reviews. Where I went wrong was not requesting one of the stylists that are continually 5-star rated. I instead blindly made an appointment, and was put with the newbie gal who I found out mid-cut just started working at Barnets. The stylist that cut my hair was sweet as can be. A real doll. Her skillset though, was novice at best. I left feeling like, oh man this is a bad cut. I went home thinking I could style it myself and zhush it up. Nope. I had three obvious lines of blunt disconnected layers that at best made me look like a soccer mom. I couldn't even hit it with a curling wand because the layers were that hacked. I didn't trust having it fixed by the same stylist, so I wore my hair up in a topknot for two weeks and shelled out yet another 70 bucks to have it fixed at another salon. :( read more

I live up the street from Barnets, so I thought I'd give it a try. I saw Astrud, who was fairly new there, for a cut. I took a picture with me, and she did an amazing job. She is very quiet, but it was nice not to have to make dumb chit-chat. I got tons of compliments on my hair, so when it was time to get the highlights done, I went back to her. Again, she did a great job. I asked for something "funky," which I have done at tons of other salons, and they usually give me boring highlights. Astrud gave me big, chunky blond highlights in my naturally brown hair. She is fantastic! Bonus to the salon: they are open Sundays and Mondays (depending on the stylist). Drawbacks: they do not accept credit cards. Not the end of the world, but kind of a pain and a little amateur. Additionally, they are really expensive. For my last cut and highlight there, I think I paid $250, tip included. It's totally worth it if you can afford it, but I had to go elsewhere after that trip. All in all, I would recommend Barnets, specifically Astrud. read more

I had never been to Barnets but thought I would give it a go after seeing all the great reviews on Yelp. And let me just say, I have found MY new hairstylist! Now my hair is short, and short hair cuts aint easy (Ive had more bad ones than good ones). But.... MARISSA IS THE BOMB! She has mad skills and you can really tell that she loves what she does and gets very into the work when she is doing it. She took a good amount of time talking to me before the cut... got to know my daily hair routine, made suggestions on what might work best, offered tips and genuinely seemed really stoked to cut my hair. Her enthusiasm was super refreshing and essentially got me really stoked with confidence that she could pull off a wicked short hairdo. So i sat back, and just let her rip and OMG.... out came my bomb-ass FIERCE hair-did!!!!! :) I highly highly recommend Marissa... especially if your thinking about getting a new do and need some coaching, as well as technical skill. read more

Simply put, victoria soto did the impossible with my hair. Back in August my hair was pretty damaged and that pretty awful coppery color that anyone who has diy'd their own blonde from brunette transition is well familiar with. It was looking bad. I talked to several stylists, all recommended that i go back to my natural color. F-that. I wanted the color i was born with (a sweet golden haired child) and sent Victoria some pictures of me as a kid to give her an idea of what i was hoping for. She confidently said, We can do this! and set the right expectation that it was going to be a process that gradually would get me there. It looks healthier now than it ever has, and the color is great, long lasting, and the cuts she's been giving me (about every 2 mos since i'm lazy and cheap) still look great and grow out perfectly. She's done such a great job with my hair, that I sent my girlfriend to her, who's hair matters as much to me as my own (i'm the one looking at it, right?) Victoria again worked her magic and gave her the best cut i've ever seen on her. I love seeing my cute girlfriend preening in store windows at her hot new haircut. Thank you Vicki!!! read more

I've followed Andrea around from salon to salon like a compliant puppy, desperate for good hair when the mood strikes me. Andrea has done everything from spending 5 hours lifting home-dyed black out of my hair (oh, evil Feria, the bane of any hairdresser) to cutting off all my hair and bleaching it platinum blonde. In between, she's also given me any number of respectable, I-might-fit-in-over-at-the-triangle styles. Which is to say that she's versatile, which is nice for folks like me who may want to blend in with the soccer moms one minute and go indie rock hipster the next. The only downside to Andrea: her popularity prevents that "I want my hair cut right this second" instant gratification. But that's OK - gives me a week or so to decide what I want her to do anyway. And I have taken advantage of the same-day cancellation here and there. I dig the new salon. Warning to the Hindi: cows are revered here in the "they make awesome chairs" way. (And oh, they do.) read more

I can speak first to the woman who's been cutting my hair for 9 years. Andrea Bolding rocks. Through 5-hour bleaching sessions (she still keeps trying to get me back to blonde) and more romantic up and downs than I care to detail, Andrea always has a kind ear, steady hands and great style both with fashion and hair. After many years of business partnership and then renting a chair, Andrea has opened her own spot on 16th Street -- it's cool without being hipster, swank without being luxe and chill without being too mellow. Plus... if you ask nicely, she'll let you plug your iPod into her Bose docking station for the most musical haircut you've ever experienced. If you're wondering where the name comes from (no apostrophe mind you) pick up a rhyming Cockney slang dictionary... or just ask Andrea. read more

Haircut/Style "This was my first visit to Michele. If there is such a thing as a "hair whisperer," Michele personifies the term. I got my haircut by jarod for the first time yesterday. It's hard for me to realax in a salon chair cause I'm such a control freak with my image but early on I could tell so was he and I could tell he had an elevated taste level. Another thing I liked was he asked a lot of questions which told me he was listening to my wants. So I began to relax and let him do his thing. Today I feel more confident than pre cut. I absolutely love my style and am looking forward to working with him again. read more

I've been seeing Laura for years, and she is an ace! I often come in with a rather vague idea of what I want to do, and she helps me get specific before she even starts cutting. She does wonders with layers and helps me have bangs, even with my ridiculous cowlick. I constantly get compliments on my haircuts, which are just enough funky and just enough professional. They grow out really well, too. As for her personality, Laura is kind, professional, and engaging. Can't recommend her more highly. read more

Laura has been my hairdresser for 4 years...I'm part of the group that moved with her from Keter to Barnets. My hair is fabulous - color and cut. She listens to my wishes, consults with me about how what I want will actually look, and proceeds when I'm ready. To explain her amazing range, my 65 year old mother (who's just grown her hair out from chemotherapy) also (and has been for 4 years as well) only sees Laura. Laura was kind, compassionate and really helpful during this incredibly traumatic time in my mom's (and my) life. She's a good friend of our whole family. Andrea too is super great! I have sent everyone I know to Barnets. read more

I've been trying out new stylists near my home for convenience. I was excited to give Barnets a try based on all these great reviews and was not disappointed. Marisa did a great job. Such a good job that I referred 4 friends to her within 2 weeks who are now her regular clients. You can tell by her professional manner and skill that she used to own her own salon in Las Angeles. I am hooked and will not let anyone else cut my hair. Mission (District) complete! So why 2 stars? Because Marisa doesn't work here anymore. Obviously I am now fiercely loyal to her but that is just part of the "I've experienced better." The salon was better when she was here. This is a cold salon without her. The ego almost forces you out the door. I was relieved when Marisa didn't display that personality. Any salon owner who is vehemently obsessed with a single, bad Yelp review (from someone who gets upset that they don't take credit cards... puh-leeez) has issues. You can't please everyone. That's why smart business owners hire different, talented people to help them grow business. Hiring Marisa was a smart move. Firing her... not so much. Barnets, thanks for introducing me to a wonderful stylist! I'm hooked. read more

I confess, I use to just go to Mission Street and walk into any old Salon and I thought that was OK. There was never any real style and people could tell. I was spending all my time picking out shirts, but almost none on my hair. Then a friend of mine named Victoria said I should come into her salon and try it out. What a difference! I feel so much sexier! She totally transformed me. I will never go back to my old ways. Victoria talked to me at length about what I wanted and gave me some very constructive ideas. Then once we figured out what to do she crafted my hair. Now people compliment my hair not just my shirts and... well :) Barnets is also a very nice salon with a very comfortable atmosphere. If you are looking for a new salon/hair dresser, check out Barnets and ask for Victoria! read more

I am in accordance with everyone, except one person, that Marisa is a truelly great hairstylist. She cut my hair drastically and I could not have been happier with the result! She is down to earth, passionate, and just really good at her job. This salon is now pretentious and blahhh with out her and I don't really see why I would recommend anyone to go here now. It is a loss to your business and a loss to our neighborhood that she no longer works here. read more

My review is for Vicki, the sexy, gorgeous and talented stylist hottie at Barnets. Trust me when I say that I have somewhat complicated hair. I feel blessed, don't get me wrong, but it's big, curly and often unwieldy. I've had a hell of a time in my life finding folks who can not just cut, but actually STYLE my crazy head of hair. Because of this, I get my hair cut about once a year so I can avoid the disappointment. You know what I'm talking about...! But then there's Vicki! She's been the only person that I will allow to cut my hair on the West Coast. Seriously. She is the shizznit. She can tame the wildest beasts of mane and make you feel like a rock star when you walk out. Thank you Vicki, you are a Super Star my friend! read more

I had my hair done by Jarod. At first, I just wanted highlights but then I asked him if he thought I needed a haircut because the ends of my hair were pretty fried. He said that I should so I told him to chop off 2 to 3 inches off the bottom. He told me that he chopped off way more than 3 inches but my hair was still super long. He did an AMAZING job with the color and the cut. I usually go to the salon near my house and the owner was really nice but he always gives me the typical asian haircut. Jarod was really nice and funny too. The music there was superb too. AND, he was really cute. xD read more

Michele Simmerer for president! Full disclosure - I went to her at Color Box for years before her move to Barnet's. She's a wiz with the sciz & a wealth of charm to sit with. The first time I had her cut my hair, I forgot my 'like this photos'. I was terrified due to past bad experiences. But I explained to her what I was going for & she more than nailed it. Oh ya and she can do some hair! after years of abuse I didn't even realize from stylists cutting my fine hair with razors(a no no i found out) in one session she brought me from whack to SHOWS AS FUCK .her coloring talent is rad too, shes really a doll. its a small shop, only like three chairs in the whole place, but its super dooper major. One complaint is they don;t take cards which annoys me bc i like to not have to worry about checks .they are always playing good music, and I think the westerny theme is very cute. Andrea has been cutting my hair for the past 17 years. I first went to her when she had a place in the Lower Haight, and I was thrilled when she opened up Barnets in the Mission, where I live and work. The truth is, I'd follow her to the ends of the earth. She is that good. I have crazy hair-- frizzy and curly in its natural state. I wish my hair could always look like it does when Andrea's finished with it. She's encouraged me to experiment a bit over the years -- fun pops of red and blue, some highlights, choppy bangs, side-swept bangs. Now we're talking about ombre, which I'm excited about. I love that she has lots of ideas about how to change things up, while respecting my comfort zone, I've also gone to Andrea for the occasional blow-out or up-'do before a wedding or special occasion. She's done everything from 40s glamour to 60s chignon to 80s punk. She's spent years in this business and is a total pro, and yet she's constantly educating herself, learning new skills and innovating along the way. Barnets is an awesome shop. Terrific location and shockingly, the parking is actually easy. I'm looking forward to my haircut in a couple of weeks! read more

Go see Laura at Barnets Salon. I can't say enough about her... I started going to her a year or two ago when she was in Berkeley, and I'm delighted she's moved into my 'hood. She knows what goes and what doesn't go with my face and isn't afraid to try something new with my hair. She is very sweet and friendly, and there is always a good conversation involved when you are sitting in her chair. I get compliments on my hair all the time, whether it be the cut or the color (this was my first time with color, EVER!). She's a great stylist, and a worth every penny. I walk past this place every single day, and finally decided to get my hair cut there. I called at noon and they had an opening for me at 3, which was great because otherwise I would have probably put it off for another 4 months, even though my mom recently reminded me that my hair looked really cute a few months ago, but now it was at kind of an awkward, in-between length. Anyway, they were able to take me the same day, and when I got there, Sandra took great care of me. She yelled at me for washing my hair every day and never styling it and pretty much neglecting it, but instead of throwing me out of the salon when I told her that I really only get around to having my hair cut about every 6 months instead of the 6 weeks that she recommended, she gave me a great cut that's very easy, wash-and-go, just like I need. The decor is cute and comfy, and the prices are totally reasonable (I was concerned when I saw that Sandra was raising her prices to $55 for a men's cut, unsure what this would mean about how much a woman's cut cost, but was relieved to find that $55 is a flat rate). I'll definitely be back, and maybe after a few more pep talks from Sandra I'll actually start blow-drying my hair. read more
