Such was my afternoon (and still today) after my visit to Spunk Salon. I'm newly-out trans, and knew there was SOMETHING I could do with my hair to make it easier for others to 'see' me. But I wasn't prepared for how great (and fun!) the entire experience would be! From the warm greeting when I entered Spunk (from the proprietor Suzie), to the affirming consult/complete hair makeover (from Anthony) - and the easy banter between everyone in the salon (including customers and friends of customers) - I felt seen and heard in every way possible! Being transgender can be an utter nightmare at times, particularly when you wade into the murky, overly gendered waters of hair styling. Far too often, you're clocked as a specific gender (and, often, the wrong one) before you even open your mouth - and at that point it doesn't matter what you say, because why would a "guy" want a femme cut? Like I said, nightmare. But Spunk? Spunk is fuckin fantastic. From the first time I set my foot in the door and had my hair cut by Brandon, I felt seen and affirmed. My hair also looked awesome. Getting a dye-job with Shannon made me see myself in a while new light...and cry a little, thanks estrogen. Yeah, it's more expensive than a cheep mall place, but it is so, so, so worth it. My girlfriend was referred to Spunk because of YOU wonderful Yelpers! Upon walking in I immediately noticed that Spunk had an energy about it. I can't quite put my finger on it, but it's reminicsent of a place that I could spend hours in. I absolutely love the various works of art that are displayed on the walls. I, on the other hand, didn't have a clue about what I wanted and she just did her thing and gave me an awesome cut. My girlfriend has gone to her about four times now and she always gets complimented on her hair. Arzo is extremely friendly and personable. Time flies when you're in her care because she knows how to carry a conversation! She as well as another stylist, Suzie, are very hospitable because they checked in a couple of times to see if I wanted a refreshment. My long-time stylist was on maternity and I didn't like calling in and trying to communicate with her clueless receptionist - Hello? Anybody home? So months into her leave, I'm looking a bit like Bigfoot and peeps are starting to back up on the street when they see me. One day, I just got fed up with my do and trolled the length of the Castro, sticking my misbegotten head into every salon I found. On my last try, I stuck my head into Spunk. Suzie was cutting a gal's hair and I loved the look, took a card, called, and got on her dance card. Not at her most convenient time, but she made it work for me. She did a fabulous cut which got me raves for months. Just got my second cut with her and decided my hair has found a new home. I heart Spunk. read more

I love love love this salon. The #1 big reason is because of Anee. She is the best and will never cut your hair in a way she thinks is going to look bad which is awesome. Even when I come in with a crazy idea about how I want my hair she is brutally honest which is necessary because I mean who really wants to go into a salon with a bad idea only to come out looking like you were in a horror movie. ick.. so.. this salon rocks. I am always able to find parking and the place itself is super clean but has an awesome SF Funk about it. There is always new artwork on the walls (good for you to know if you are an artist and want to showcase your work). I sit there for almost 2hours getting my hair done and some places are soooo boring you want to die. Not this place, I have fun looking at what is on the walls as well as enjoy the friendly chatter from everyone there. It is a chill, laid back, funky place with great stylists. I have only been to Anee however so I can only compliment the way she cuts and colors hair but everyone else seems really nice and from what I can tell by who I see getting their hair cut... they all look good.. I was referred to Spunk by someone very close to me. She LOVES Suzie. I've been looking for a great stylist and am sad to say, Suzie wasn't great. I was scheduled for a cut and highlights. When I arrived, I was the second-to-last customer of her day and she hadn't factored highlights into her schedule. She only had time to do a cut. My cut was just ok. Not fantastic. Granted, I wasn't looking for a big change but I had hoped to get her opinion/advice on my hair (it's fine and somewhat limp and gets oily by 4 in the afternoon). I had questions about how to best cut it and style it given the hair texture and the fact that I wear a motorcycle helmet when I commute. Her advice: wash my hair only twice a week! Um, I said oily and limp by 4pm! Exactly how will letting it continue to get oilier and dirtier help volumize it? Like I said, the cut was just ok. I have to further deduct a star because of her attitude. She's not helpful in the advice department and she's a bit on the snooty side. I'll keep looking. read more

Love the oversize chairs and mansion sized mirrors! The space also features a rotating collection of local art, making this place feel like a true community spot. She was rude and aggressive. She didn't listen. She wouldn't discuss what I wanted or didn't want. The haircut was disappointing. The only positive was that she made an effort to be nice and civil to my kid whose hair she was cutting. Though that made it look even more strange how rude she was to me. I had this place bookmarked for awhile and with all the 5 star reviews, I was excited to come and get a haircut, and maybe make some changes. I was able to make an appointment via email (convenient!) for that weekend (not as bad as I thought). I came in to a really trendy looking salon for my appointment with Anee. I told her that I could decide keeping my hair long or cutting it short, and showed her a picture of me with short hair. She thought that I would look younger with long hair so I kept it at that. She trimmed in the back and added more layers. Then in the front she added more layers to frame my face. I also have to add that I have Asian wavy hair that curls up into spirals after I wash my hair, add product, and air dry, so I went in with my wavy hair so that she could see how it looked. Sometimes after haircuts, the spirals don't really since the cut breaks it up, but Anee did a good job. I guess there wasn't as much drastic change as I had wanted, but I'm still happy with the cut. I can now grow it out longer, which I keep trying to do and also give in and cut my hair. Anee also gave me some tips on taking care of my hair and suggested products when I asked about them. So happy that my hair is lighter now. This is a little out of the way for me, so I shall see when my next cut comes up to decide what to doooooo... read more

Christina is my stylist, and she always delivers a great haircut, and is very friendly and also accommodating to my busy schedule and procrastination habits when setting hair appointments. I get my hair cut by Anee, who just started at this salon, but previously was at a nearby salon. She's also cut my roommate's hair since he was a young lad- which is how i found out about her. I have to say that although I've only had a few haircuts from her, she does an excellent job. Its the most I ever paid for a haircut, but I can definitely tell the difference between the haircut I get from Anee and the ones I used to get from other spots that used clippers and shears. Anee uses this cool straight-razor looking thing. The first time I got my hair cut and went home to wash it, I could actually feel the difference as I shampooed. The ends of my hair were...finer...somehow- not the usual pokey mess I associate with a haircut. Also, after a month of growth (about as long as I usually go) my hair still looks even, albiet a bit long, and doesn't annoy me in the way that my old haircuts used to, which would be my impetus for getting a new haircut. This time, I had a friend say to me: hey, your hair is getting a bit long. And I probably would have kept letting it grow, but I have my brother's wedding in a week, and I don't want to make a "statement" in his wedding photos. Oh well, this review was a lot more about my 'sick' haircut than the salon or the haircutting prowess of its practicioners, but I'm really only writing it so you'll know how awesome Anee is. Spunk is AWESOME but really, when I say that, I mean Christina. I came in wanting a shorter cut and some blue color. Christina really listened to me about what I was going for, what I didn't want, how I cared for my hair, what I did for a living, etc., and then came up with a cut that I absolutely love. As for the dye, she did a great job of keeping things somewhat conservative at first in her placement of the dye. If I liked it then I can always come back and get more put in. This turned out to be a fantastic idea as I had job interviews and family events the following few weeks that benefitted from my hair not looking so crazy blue. I've since been back to get more color put in. I really can't say enough about Christina. It has been over 7 years since I've been able to find a hairdresser that is as skilled and sensitive to the customer's needs and vision. It's such a relief to finally have a hairdresser I can really trust. Oh, and can I just say that I would live inside Spunk just to listen to the music all day. Awesome. read more

My co worker recommended Spunk, Suzie specifically. She made me feel very comfortable. I am the 100th reviewer! Yes! I am have been delaying this review since I want to write a detailed review on my stylist and Spunk Salon itself. First off, I have always been a fan of Ben. He used to cut and style my hair back in the days at his previous in the East Bay. But as I was growing out my hair, I didn't realize he left. When I came back and asked for Ben, they I had to settle with a mediocre stylist that didn't please my desired style. From googling and just basic search for salons in the SF. I noticed that Spunk catered to unique hairstyles and yelp reviewers enjoyed their hair styled by Ben. Made an appointment, and was called the next day by Ben himself and got the appointment by the weekend. Came in I was so glad it was the same Ben! Let me tell you, he is great with layers, styling, just plain cutting it in a way that extends the time you need to cut your hair. I had my hair cut in late January and my hair still looks salon fresh. I had a sh*t ton of split ends before my cut, not I don't even know what happened to it. I still use the same shampoo and my diet did not change. I love my hair style! SS is located in the castro, a muni away. Ben is quite flexible with his hours just call in and see what's available! I love Anee! I discovered her back when she worked at a different salon and loved her so much, I followed her as she moved from X Studio Salon to her current place at Spunk. I'm pretty sure I'd follow her to any salon; yes, she's THAT good! :) She listens to what you want, but is also honest and will tell you if she doesn't think it will flatter you. I have been going to her for my haircuts for at least 2 years. Granted, they are infrequent (every 2-3 months or so), but each time she updates my style beautifully. I've since moved 3 hours away from the city, but every time I am there on a visit (which isn't often, unfortunately), I call Anee up to schedule a haircut. She's the best!! I've been a customer of Christina's for the past 10 years and of Spunk since they opened. The salon is a really cool space, awesome energy, great slytlists, etc. All of the stylists are extremely talented. Suzi cut my mom's and my aunt's hair for years before opening Spunk. My true hair love, however, is with Christina Torres. I can't say enough good things about Christina. My hair has been a conversation starter for a decade now and she speaks a language with my hair that no other stylist is able to do. Christina is awesome! I am not very good at describing the styles I want, but Christina always listens patiently and spends the time to understand me. She also tells me honestly if there is something that she can't do because of the way my hair grows, etc. and then she helps me figure out what works for me. I leave with a fun haircut every time. I followed Suzie from GlamaRama which is much closer to where I live. But I much prefer the journey to the Castro to get my hairs did! Suzie has such style and grace and she is a fun and great conversationalist. I love the colors of spunk (shades of green) and the bathroom (gold and regal). I always appreciate a glass of wine after (usually) a hard day of work. I trust Suzie's judgment as a doctor of hair.
