I don't typically write reviews, but I made this account for one reason only: to warn others about the exploitative, unethical, and frankly predatory business practices of Barnes Auto and Towing. My friend and I arrived around 8 PM on a Friday night at 126 West Franklin St., where--unsurprisingly--the parking was completely packed due to the game and the weekend rush. We found a lot next to a nail salon and a few other small businesses, all of which were closed for the night. The sign directly in front of the spot clearly stated 90-minute parking, with no visible restrictions. In fine print, tucked far away and barely legible from the actual space, it read "no walk-offs"--something we had no way of seeing or knowing. We returned at 9:30 PM, exactly 90 minutes later, to find the car gone. Shocked and confused, we called the number posted on the large lot sign--Barnes Auto and Towing. A representative informed us that the car had been towed because surveillance cameras had "caught the discrepancy" and alerted them. Not a business request, not a complaint, but a third-party surveillance alert. So the company profits off hyper-surveilled lots, towing cars the minute someone dares to leave--even when the signage is unclear. We were told the impound was just a 6-minute drive away. It wasn't. It was 20 minutes away in another county. Once we arrived, the reality was worse than we could've imagined. The impound lot was tucked into the woods, dark, unmarked, and terrifying. As two teenage girls arriving alone at 11 PM, we felt deeply unsafe. The shack that served as the "office" was dimly lit and poorly maintained. A man behind a small desk greeted us politely, but only allowed one of us to retrieve the car--alone, in the dark, isolated lot. There was no legitimate reason for this. We believe it was simply to separate us, which was both unnecessary and disturbing. The price? $300 in cash or $380 by card--a staggering upcharge, far exceeding the national average of $109 for towing. Who carries $300 in cash? We had to drive all the way back to my friend's house to get it just to avoid the outrageous credit fee. To make matters worse, the gate wouldn't open when my friend reached the car. She had to return to the shack and ask the man to open it manually. Again, he refused to let both of us go together, despite our concerns. Though the night staff member was polite and acknowledged our fears, the situation remained unsafe and unsettling. We later learned he didn't even work for Barnes directly--he was just staffing the desk--and that Barnes receives alerts from surveillance companies, not from businesses themselves. In other words, they don't act at the behest of the lot owners--they profit from catching and penalizing you for even a momentary misstep. The company reportedly tows around to 250 cars a month. From other experiences we've read, they appear to target young people, who may not yet know to scrutinize every line of fine print on a parking sign. We also found it suspicious that they required my friend's ID to "document" the transaction, with no clear explanation why. All in all, if you see the name Barnes Auto and Towing anywhere near a parking lot--turn around. This company thrives on fear, confusion, and misinformation. They charge nearly three times the going rate, demand cash whenever possible (raising questions about documentation), and create unsafe and manipulative situations for vulnerable customers. Beware predators... Who knew that "predatory towing" was a thing? Not me until this past weekend. My sister and I were caught up in what I know now to be a money grabbing scheme by the owner of a shopping center and a local towing company. The towing company "lies in wait" on site for customers to park in the center's lot, as they get caught up in a Draconian rule that states that if you leave the center's property AT ANY TIME (even to say, return a library book), your car is subject to towing. There are security cameras in place that have recently been installed to aid them in their monitoring and apparently the feed is sent directly to the towtruck driver's iPad. Wow. The signage faces inward toward the parking lot, and it is not clear, for example, that the restaurant parking lot, which we used, is part of that mall. Additionally, one cannot read the signs from the street (which would allow a driver to choose another spot, knowing this policy is in place). The police have sent letters to the manager, no word on the effectiveness. Inside 30 minutes after parking at this lot (and yes, we did cross the street heaven forbid, but then came back to the mall to shop and ostensibly stay for dinner), my sister's car was towed. To another county. To the tune of $360 to get it out of the impound lot. Including a $100 surcharge for using a credit card. This is privately owned property, so no ordinances have effect apparently. And predatory? Let's just say that over almost 250 cars have been towed in less than a month. That should tell you one thing. The fact that the towing company has access to security footage and the camera feeds, and from what I heard, makes the call to tow, NOT the shopping center. That should tell you something more. And, the fact that the business owners in the mall are upset about this practice, because it's driving business away. Huh, imagine that. The towing company is BARNES TOWING in Chapel Hill-Carroboro. During my interaction with Barnes, they violated multiple Chapel Hill city ordinances, refused payment, refused to release my vehicle back to me, and hit my husband with their tow truck. Before I continue, I recommend that you read reviews for Barnes on any other platform than Google (check Yelp, Better Business Bureau, and Facebook Reviews). It is much easier to post fraudulent reviews on Google, which they have clearly done. In the hour following my incident with Barnes, they received more than 30 new 5-star reviews --even though they told me my car was only the one of two they had towed that evening. On the evening of November 28, Barnes Towing stole my vehicle from the McDonald's parking lot on Franklin Street. Before picking up our food, my husband and I walked across the street to pick up our boba order. Less than five minutes later, as we were walking into the McDonald's, we saw that our car was in the process of being hooked up to a Barnes Towing tow truck. When we spoke to the driver, who we believe is named Jason Leonard, he told us we could pay $140 cash or $200 on card to get our car back. He then told us that we had five minutes to get cash from an ATM before he took our car. My husband began walking to the ATM, and checked Google Maps for directions. He saw that the ATM was a 0.5 mile walk away, meaning he would have to walk a full mile in under five minutes to prevent our car from being towed. Many people understand that walking a mile in five minutes is impossible. When my husband returned, he attempted speaking to the driver, who had shut himself in the tow truck with his window rolled up. When my husband tried to offer paying by card, the driver yelled that it was "too late" and began pulling our car out of the lot, hitting my husband with the tow truck in the process. We were forced to call law enforcement and were able to file a police report against Barnes Towing. After taking the bus to an ATM and calling an Uber for the 30-minute trip to the car lot, which is a very dark, sketchy property in the middle of nowhere, we were able to get our car back for $260 (it would have been $360 to pay on card, which they tried to get us to do). Daniel, the man at the office, laughed at my husband and I when we told him that one of his drivers had hit my husband with a tow truck. He then refused to give us the name or contact information for a manager or for Barnes's lawyer. When asked about the 30 new Google reviews that happened after our car was towed, he shut down and refused to speak to us. The following day, I learned that the tow driver reported our car as being towed to the police after he had already removed the car from the lot--a clear violation of city ordinances. So, you park at CARR MILL MALL - the parking is free and there's no signs around the actual parking spots saying there are ANY limits - but if you walk across the street to the other little shops, they are lying in wait to tow you. My car was towed yesterday within just a few minutes of leaving the Franklin St. Panera Bread parking lot. I ended up paying over $300 by the end of this horrible experience. I went to Panera to pick up lunch, and I was also picking up a take-out order from Chipotle, which is next door. I went to the Chipotle first, walking about 100 feet away from my car and the parking lot. When I exited the Chipotle, about 5-7 minutes later, I saw my car being towed. I had seen the signs about towing, but never imagined it would apply for momentarily visiting the establishment next door before going into Panera. I called Barnes Towing right away and they said it would be $360 to get my car back if I paid by credit card, and $260 if I paid by cash, which just proves that they are out to scam people for cash. I had no choice but to get the money and pay over $40 for an Uber to the yard, which was a 20-min drive away. When I got to Barnes Towing, a sketchy chain-link yard filled with cars, I asked the woman at the window if there was any way to reduce the fee, and she very matter-of-factly said "$260 is already the reduced price for paying cash." She only ever responded to my protests with "I understand," clearly without any understanding. I didn't know predatory towing was a thing until this happened and I looked up the reviews for Barnes Towing, which are all the same! This company is predatory and preys on young people and females in general. I parked in Paneras parking lot on west Franklin st, there were no parks at chipotle which was directly across the street. My order was already ready so I ran in to get it. It took only 1 minute. I came out and this guy was already hooking my car up. He said you left the premises I said sir I was gone for 1 minute. He said it doesn't matter how long you were gone, once you step off of this premises. And he pointed out the sign that I clearly did not see. He said that Panera called him bc they have surveillance but it was literally 1 minute and his company is 17 mins away so how is that even possible? I believe he watched me and waited until I walked in chipotle. He said $200 cash right now and I'll unhook it, I said I don't have cash. I only had apple pay. I called my dad, he tried to pay over the phone, the guy said we don't take cards over the phone and the card would have to match the name of the car that's towed. He said it'll be $350 when you come to get it. My dad had to drive 45 minutes to come get me. We get there and it's in a dark wooded area, they only let one person in the dark lot to get the car so my dad went because he didn't want me to go alone. It seems Barnes Towing and Panera have started cracking down on parking at that location for any reason other than going inside Panera. They are waiting at the public parking lot behind Chipotle and Panera and will attempt to tow your car as soon as you step off the "property." I attempted to park at the Chipotle for my lunch (to-go order that was already done) but the lot was full, and they were doing electrical work next to Chipotle that looked to me like the road was closed. I parked at Panera knowing I would be in-and-out. I was inside Chipotle for all of two minutes and when I came out, my car was already hooked. They charged $140 to get it "unhooked" and said they did not take credit/debit cards, which is against Chapel Hill towing laws (and punishable by a misdemeanor). I will be reporting it to the Town and suggest everyone affected by them do the same. Not sure how they sleep at night doing what they do. I know I wouldn't be able to. I also don't know what Panera gains from this -- there were plenty of parking spots and most of us would be gone in a couple of minutes. I sat in my car in the Panera parking lot for the rest of my lunch just to prove a point that I was taking up a spot longer by staying on the property than I would have if they just let me get my food from Chipotle and leave. This is going to be a long one... Around 4 o'clock on February 10, 2025 I was going to pick up my wings from Heavenly Buffaloes at 407 W Franklin St, Chapel Hill NC 27516,which is directly next to the McDonalds on 409 W Franklin St, Chapel Hill NC27516. As I turned into the only entrance of the parking lot for HeavenlyBuffaloes, I noticed parking to my right. The first parking spots I saw were McDonaldsmobile order parking spaces, which obviously I wouldn't park at one of thosespots. So, I went further down and parked at a random spot next to the McDonalds and directly next to the wing place. My guess is that it is 15-20 feet from the HeavenlyBuffaloes establishment. There were towing signs all throughout the parking lot, saying "Parking for Customers Only". Does it say McDonald'sCustomers only? No. I arrived at this parking lot at 4:32pm according to Life360and then went inside Heavenly Buffaloes to pay for my to-go order, and according to my apple pay purchase that was at 4:36pm. At that moment I see a man walking around my car, so I get my boyfriend and we go out there, so my guess it's probably still 4:36pm. I noticed my car is already hooked up to the tow truck. I tell him that I have been parked here for 5 minutes, and he says,"You have no way to prove that" and I respond with "Yes, Ido" and he doesn't let me continue. I also told him that, "there is no indication that this parking spot was only for McDonald's customers". He said that it is very clear, because of the difference of the concrete in the parking lot, saying that the rough concrete was obviously the Heavenly Buffaloes parking, and the smoother pavement was McDonalds. He then points to a very thin strip of pavement on the side of Heavenly Buffaloes restaurant where there is aMASSIVE tow sign and says that this is obviously where I should have parked.Mind you there is not a single parallel parking space along where he pointed, so why should I just ASSUME that this is where to park and not in a parking spot. He was extremely aggressive and did not let me speak. Whenever my boyfriend or I spoke up he made it seem like we weren't allowed to be upset because he is unlawfully trying to tow my car. Then I ask him how much it will cost to drop my car (unhook the vehicle), and he tells me it's $200 cash. I tell him I don't have cash, and he says it will be $260 credit/debit. And at this moment he gives me a time limit of 10 minutes. Then he goes into his car around 4:38 ish, according to when I started calling people. We were very freaked out about this whole situation, so my boyfriend started taking pictures of his truck and the signs, the first picture was taken at 4:41pm. Then he comes out and sends me the work order to sign via iPhone (4:48pm). I asked him a question about the information I thought I needed to fill out. Instead, he snaps at me and says, "I didn't tell you to fill out anything, just sign".Which came off EXTREMELY aggressive, and felt I was being rushed due to my 10-minute timer until he took my car away. Once I submit that document, he sends me a new link to pay for the drop fee (4:50pm) & then at 4:54pm I get a confirmation for the payment & then he unhooks my car and leaves. BUT you know what is so strange about this situation is...1) I parked my car at 4:32 and noticed he was looking around my car at 4:36, but my car was already completely hooked up, that means he did that in 4 minutes from the time I walked inside and when I saw him. 2) He told me he got a call from the parking lot security cameras either from the McDonalds higher ups or his companies higher ups, that wasn't very clear. But you know what's so INTERESTING about this is that the work order that was sent to me at 4:48 pm, said that the Date/Time Requested for this tow was 2/10/2025 @ 4:42PM. Do you know why that's SO strange? Because we had already spoken with him at that point, and my boyfriend was taking pictures of the tow truck at 4:41pm. So how is it that he got a call about my car, but it was already hooked up and we have already been speaking to him before that point. Well, maybe it's because he didn't get a call and was parked on the other side of the McDonalds watching the cameras and as soon as I stepped foot in the wing place, he came to tow my car. So, first he lied to me saying that he got a call, which obviously didn't happen because I was already knee-deep in a conversation with this man at 4:42. Another thing that is super interesting is once I told him I can't pay with cash, weirdly enough he goes into his truck and then according to the time stamps, this is when the so-called "tow was requested" at 4:42. And according to this company's horrible track record, and numerous complaints of this exact thing. Barnes Towing is a car theft operation. I join the chorus of people whose cars were stolen within 30 mins of arriving in the lot. I wonder how much of this cash is being reported to the IRS. Unethical business. Engages in predatory towing at Carr Mill Mall. They charge $260 cash to release your impounded car, plus another $100 if you pay with a card. As a AAA member, I will be contacting AAA to ask that they no longer partner with this business. read more

This business lies to people they are towing claiming they only accept cash to release your car; therefore forcing people to pay only by cash. If you don't pay cash they tow and then ask you to pay twice the amount to get your car back!
