I visited The Book Trader a few days ago. What an experience!…read more First of all, they have every type of book imaginable. From cookbooks to sci fi, from fantasy to biographies, from adult romances to children's picture books! You could find books from the 1600s all the way until the 21st century. The Book Trader is exactly what its name says: it trades books. You can bring books, which they will give you store credit for and then you can buy books for cheaper than they would cost in a regular store. This was such a great idea, in my opinion. I traded in 2 books and bought one. Now, aside from being separated vaguely by genre and authors' works being mostly together, there is no other sorting system to this store. Books, as you can see in my pictures, are all over the place and it is very hard to walk around parts of the store. If you want a specific book...good luck! Also, make sure you have cash on you. The store only takes cash and checks.

My favorite is their curation of books which also reflects US social/political/economics at any moment in time you are there, although the space holds books on any subject you want to look for. I know that when I walk in there I will for sure find something that would catch my interest. Probably because the store is located right across Princeton University campus, the selection of books is always very educational and diverse in voices and subjects. But unlike in other bookstores near universities, I noticed, Labyrinth still maintains an independant vibe. Once I walked in for books about writing, and found lots of books I have not heard about or seen in B&N or any other bookstores. It was like a breath of fresh air to walk into a bookstore and find something different than what I am used to seeing and discover new material. Books are priced the same way they are in other bookshops. Staff is friendly and knowledgeable. Labyrinth also offers games, it's own branded merch and art by NJ local artists. I found books I absolutely love--some I discovered on my own and others that were personally recommended by the store's fabulous curator, and owner Peter. When I mentioned a book I had recently read and loved--Tomorrow, and Tomorrow, and Tomorrow by Gabrielle Zevin--Peter immediately jumped up, went straight to the bottom shelf, and pointed it out. There was even a handwritten staff recommendation and summary attached to the book. Many of the books throughout the store have these thoughtful mini-reviews, which made browsing feel so personal and engaging. I love the overall vibe of this shop. The selection of gifts is just right: a charming mix of journals, candles, book-themed merchandise, and a few toys--including stuffed animals. I fell in love with a stuffed bear and now I'll have to go back because I didn't purchase him (regret!). I want to tell you about a holiday kindness done for my family by a local business…read more My family is a comic book loving family. I donated my old collection of books and graphic novels to the high school, we hit all the movies, etc. Of course this makes us supporters of the geekery here in Matawan. So much so, I follow them across social media. Well at the start of March when the pandemic was starting to get noticed, I lost my job as a private company school bus driver because of school closures and my son became very sick, not covid related. Worryingly sick. We were at the ER three times, ended up with a specialist at Children's Hospital in New Brunswick, and finally a diagnosis with an autoimmune disease, something terrifying during a pandemic. It's been hard and scary, and now we're stuck inside like my son is the boy in the bubble, and I've talked about this on Twitter over the past month. Well the geekery reached out to me on Twitter. They noticed its been a hard time for us and how sick my son has been and asked if they could bring him an Easter basket to brighten his day. Less than 5 minutes later there was a package on my back doorstep. Thank you to the geekery for offering something fun and unexpected! It's good there's still kindness being shared during this frightening time. I hope when this is all over and we can start going out to the shops again, the geekery is still around filled with heroes both fictional and very real.
