Definitely the place for mystery books... who knew there were so many? This could have had every topic ever written, and you would've convinced me it was a 'regular' bookshop. There are also used and signed volumes. Legend has it one is hollowed out in the shape of a wrench. Pardon my failing old man memory, but I believe it was friendly employee Mike that I had a nice chat with at the back of the store (maybe *too* friendly. What a treasure trove of incredible books, all at great prices!…read more Friends of Library groups are such an incredible force and I'm so inspired by the Friends of Webster Library for running this wonderful store, the proceeds of which benefit the Webster library and other east side branches. I stopped by one afternoon and could have spent all afternoon browsing! I was lucky enough to snag a few copies of Demon Slayer, a few Julia Turshen cookbooks, a Christmas movie, and more! The prices were great - I don't think anything was more than a few dollars. The staff was really friendly and pointed out a second Julia Turshen book when they saw one in my pile. I'll definitely be visiting the Book Cellar again! To enter the Book Cellar, enter the library branch and walk straight ahead. You'll see a sign that will guide you down the stairs to the book shop. From the way the owner spoke about crystals you can really tell how passionate he is about it. Their wide collection of crystals are incredible, they even have the authentic moldavite, I have been looking for it everywhere. The prices were reasonable. Definitely will be getting crystals from here only.

But Mercer Street Books & Records is a place with heart and soul. While the Strand might have tons of new stuff, Mercer has some quirky, delightful, and downright weird stuff. Niche stuff. Magazines that are 20 years old (we are talking about art, music, and culture mags, not Vogue or People). Worn and well-loved used volumes of poetry, film. Languages (huge German and Spanish section). Some records, though nothing recent. Mostly things from the 40s-50s-60s, maaayyyyyybe some a little older. Show tunes. Soundtracks. Patty Duke. Fashion, design, music (Jazz, rock, British Invasion). Was bummed there was no hiphop section, but I'm not sure I should have ever presumed there would be one. Religion, fiction, history, and more. Mostly organized. Loosely may be a better word. Makes it more like a fun treasure hunt, the way things are arranged. Maybe in the design section, you might find a random copy of, "Making Dinosaurs Dance" or a Netter's anatomy coloring book. Both are in some way about art and design, but they are unexpected discoveries. Mercer is smaller than the Strand, but not as busy or as crowded, at least not on the Wednesday night I went. As I said on my review of the Strand, the person I presume to be the owner of this shop was there working the register. I could be wrong about the owner part, but I could tell the guy was old school LES and village. Beatnik hat, scarf, vest, round rimmed glasses, beard. As far as value, a lot to be found here. Good prices and some interesting finds. And loved that they were playing jazz. Whereas other stores might feel commercial and crowded, this felt like a hidden community spot.

We were out for my husband's birthday on 10/26/23. We saw this shop and stopped in to take a look…read more They really didn't' have anything that interested us, so as we were about to leave, my husband asked the Lady if she had any coins. She said that she did and went to get a tin from behind the counter. The whole time she kept saying that she didn't really know that much about coins but proceeded to pull out some of the larger coins for us to view. My husband chose two of the $1.00 coins she showed him and some small change. After looking them up on her phone, she told us $40.00 for the 1900 dollar and then said $150.00 for everything he had chosen to purchase. The second coin was dated 1797 Trade dollar. When we got home the next day, I looked them up for him to check the values. My first clue was when I could only find "Trade dollars" minted in the 1800's. I then dug deeper and found out that it was a fake. After reading information on them, it was suggested to put a magnet to it to see if it stuck. Well, it did! I immediately checked the 1900 coin also. Guess what? Fake also. Lesson learned for $150.00 is always carry a magnet with us and have the equipment you need to verify what you have in your hand. I'm just glad we didn't get taken for any more than we did. Buyer beware is the right phrase for this shop!

Even with a sign on the door stating closed returning at a specific time, if you return after that time, they are not always open. The door will be locked and if you knock, no one answers. The first time I did this, I had to call and spoke to somebody. The second time however, I did not bother. The store does have a decent selection of mostly jewelry items for sale. If you were looking for antiques, this is not a traditional antique store.

I was approached by another mother also trying to do the same for her children. naturally the kids were filling each other out and walking around the store as I waited to make my purchase. my daughter had her scooter parked inside the front of the store with her Helmet attached. The person who was ringing me up (which I believe to be the owner) Made the most disgusting comment after asking my child directly if the scooter & helmet belonged to her & she replied yes. He told my child she should probably put on the helmet while in the store. I Immediately left and did not complete the purchase. I felt so embarrassed & walked out. I couldn't even phantom the words to say. Because I could not believe someone would talk to a child in that manner. I eventually called the store and told them what happened and received an apology from another employee.

A patron for many years this store has serviced union for 30 years. The owners are helpful and should you need to catch the newest author or best seller he is happy to accommodate. That's how it was with The Town Book Store, a neighborhood fixture that was once located across the street many years ago. Now in a cute corner of Westfield, this cozy, beautiful store is very welcoming. You step in and see a counter to the right and books (along with plush animals and more) throughout the rest of the shop. There are even a couple nice chairs in a nice little waiting area off to the side. Walk towards the back and you find shelves with featured books and even a sale section. The woman behind the counter was extremely friendly and it was nice chatting with her as my girlfriend and I looked over the books selection. The store seems to largely aim towards kids. The kids section is extensive with the adult sections are a bit less packed with selections. That said, my interests skew towards scifi/fantasy and graphic novels, and you cannot expect every store to carry those in bulk. There was also a shelf dedicated to the town of Westfield itself, with books that covered the history of the town and even a pack of greeting cards with paintings of buildings from around town! This is not the flashiest bookstore around, but that's the charm. I absolutely recommend a visit if you are in Westfield.
