Albano's Pasta Shop - Short Rib Tortellini

I am hard to please when it comes Italian cuisine. That said, Albano's is definitely delivered!! My…read morewife and I each had a tortellini dish (I the braised short rib and she the lobster) and shared. Both were incredible. The best part is the flavors maintained their own identities instead of blending into one. Too often I have had tortellini dishes at other places that seemed like they were made in a crockpot. However, that is not the Albano's way. The place is very cozy, in a nice town, with very friendly staff. The owner even took time to stop by our table and talk with us...very down to earth. Also, I was impressed by the portion size. You won't go away hungry. I highly recommend making a reservation. We went on a Wednesday evening around 5:00 and they were pretty full. I could easily imagine people lining up outside on a weekend. It's that good!!

Salad was enough for 4 - 6 people. Me and my partner had plenty of leftovers. So many ingredients almost too many to list. The ingredients that stood out were the Asparagus, mushrooms, and broccolini. Ingredients were hot and delicious. We split the Carmelized Onion Tortellini. It was magical. Great buttery taste and the Carmelized Onions oozed out of the tortellini when I cut into it with the fork. We were stuffed when we left and had enough leftovers to eat for dinner the next day. Cannot wait to go back....

The focaccia and the pastas we got were a 10/10. It just all tastes so fresh and like a home cooked meal. We got the focaccia appetizer, the spaghetti, tagliatelle and I got a Negroni sbagliato and my boyfriend had a NA beer. All was great and we had a very nice dinner here.

After visiting the Renegade Crafts Fair, we walked down Division Street looking for a restaurant…read morefor dinner. We discovered Tortello. My husband was attracted by the Michelin Bib Gourmand signs displayed outside, although I noticed they were for 2022-2024, not 2025 or 2026. I also checked Yelp and saw that they had a 4.3-star rating, so we decided to give it a try. It turns out Tortello only accepts walk-ins and does not take reservations. You order from the menu board behind the cashier and pay at the counter, including the tip, before your food is served. You are then given a number to place on any available table. Drinks are picked up from the counter, while the servers bring the cooked food to your table. Staff were friendly and patient. We were not familiar with the menu and it took us a while to decide what to order. It is a rather small pasta place with a row of small tables with banquette and chair seating indoors. We found a table on the outdoor patio in the front which was nice. I had a Zero Proof Hugo Spritz ($10), which was more like a soda. My husband had a glass of House White Wine ($10), and my daughter ordered an Aperol Spritz ($15). For food, my husband and I each ordered a Squid Ink Bucatini ($32 x 2) - Prawns, roasted tomato butter, cherry tomatoes, and garlic scrapes. It was also recommended by the cashier. The flavors were good, but each plate had only 3 prawns, with the detached heads included, which made the plate look a little more filled. My husband felt that the prawns weren't particularly fresh and said that 1 of his 3 seemed close to being stale. Portions were not large, it was enough for me though. For this price point, it was just okay. My daughter did not complain about her Cacio e Pepe ($24) - Spaghetti alla chitarra, imported aged pecorino and pepper. I shared a couple of bites, although the pasta was tasty, it was too al dente and hard to chew. Although we enjoyed the ambiance and service, the food of the night was a bit disappointing. A casual meal that cost $140 before tip was a bit on the pricier side. It included a 3% "Wellness Surcharge". With tips the meal came to $160. We had desserts from the Original Rainbow Cone right next door, which was a nice way to finish the evening. .

Not only does this shop fully support the community -- even naming sandwiches after nearby schools, they also have a wide variety of delicious offerings. I haven't lived in IL for about 10 years and I decided to take a walk down memory lane and visit Berto's like I did regularly so many years ago. It hit theeee exact same. Family traditions so strong you can taste them in every bite and they've now carried that torch successfully for nearly three decades. This family owned Deli is exact place you want to support and the best spot to stop for lunch or a quick to-go dinner to bring home to the family. They also have prepped frozen pasta and sauces. Parking behind the building and cutting through the alley makes it easily accessible.

Definitely the kind of place that's easy to stop into when you're looking for something simple and unfussy. We ordered the Italian beef with hot giardiniera and a garden salad. The standout for me was actually the bread--it was fresh, soft, and really elevated the sandwich. The beef itself was decent, but it was drier than I expected and didn't have as much flavor as I was hoping for. Thankfully, the hot giardiniera added some much-needed moisture and spice, which helped bring the sandwich together. The garden salad was very basic--just lettuce, cucumbers, and tomatoes--but the Italian dressing was excellent and packed with flavor. Sometimes a great dressing is all a simple salad needs. Overall, I enjoyed the experience and would come back, but next time I'd probably skip the Italian beef and try one of their deli sandwiches instead. Based on what I've heard and seen, that seems to be where Berto's really shines.
