Disturbing Treatment of Animals & Unprofessional Management Our experience with Barks Bed & Biscuit was incredibly disappointing and concerning -- both in how they treat animals and how they handle hiring. I feel obligated to share this to warn other pet owners and job seekers. To begin, the way the dogs are treated is unacceptable. I witnessed staff dragging dogs by their collars back to their kennels. Employees were also yelling at the dogs to "shut up," including the manager herself, who said this during my daughter's interview. That level of disrespect and impatience coming from leadership sets a terrible example for the rest of the staff and shows a complete lack of compassion. The area where dogs are taken out to use the bathroom is just small pebbles and rocks -- no grass, no real comfort for the animals. The smell was overpowering, clearly not maintained properly, and honestly, I'm worried it could pose a health risk. It was strong enough to make someone gag. My daughter only saw one dog briefly engaged with -- they threw a ball once or twice, then ignored them. That's the extent of the "playtime" they supposedly offer. The rest of the dogs just stood around waiting to go back in. two younger employees were vaping, and one even asked an older staff member to buy them a vape. This level of behavior is completely unprofessional, especially in an environment that should prioritize safety, cleanliness, and responsibility. Now onto the hiring situation with my daughter, which was completely mishandled. She applied for a job, was told she was able to come in for an interview, and asked to return the following week for a one-hour session to see how she worked with animals. She completed that, did well, and was told she had the position. Based on that, she officially gave her two weeks' notice at her current job. She was excited to move into a role where she could work with animals -- something she's passionate about. Then, out of nowhere, she received a casual text message saying they weren't hiring anymore due to things "slowing down." Here's the exact message: "Hey ______ ! Meg decided not to hire anyone else since we are getting slower; there won't be enough hours to give out. once we get busier meg or I will reach out to you! If you are interested in doing overnights then I can send you some info for them! Thank you for coming in last week:) " This is how my daughter replied: Hi, Thanks for the message. After giving it some thought, I've decided I'm no longer interested in moving forward with the position. I appreciate the opportunity to come in last week, but I did find the process a bit unprofessional, especially with the sudden change after my time and effort. I wish you and the team all the best moving forward. They haven't even made the effort to respond to my daughter and apologize. My daughter was devastated. Not only had she been told she had the job, but she was also counting on that income -- especially after just taking her pet to an emergency vet visit that cost a lot. Now, because of their carelessness and poor communication, she'll have no money coming in and has to deal with the fallout of leaving her previous job for an opportunity that was taken away with a text. Between the neglectful treatment of animals, the unsanitary conditions, the unprofessional and immature staff, and the way they carelessly misled a young applicant, I would never trust Barks Bed & Biscuit with my pet -- or recommend anyone consider working there. read more

Barks B&B is our go to place for boarding our two dogs. They are rescues and have separation anxiety but have always come home happy (and clean) from Barks B&B. We pack their meals and bring a dog bed from home they can snuggle on together. I especially love that they have video cameras so I can check on them while we are away. Sometimes they don't answer the phone but leave a voicemail, they always call back within a reasonable time. This reminds me, I need to make their next reservation! read more

Short story: Barks bed and biscuit...highly recommend. Long story: I have used barks multiple times that we have gone out of town for our silky terrier. She is 13 years young and not the biggest fan of other dogs so I am always a bit nervous to kennel her. Bark's has done a wonderful job every time we have used their services they take her out in the office for people socialization instead of putting her in group play times which we very much appreciate. Also, their groomer(s?) are great too! I usually give them free reign to do as they like and she always comes home looking adorable. read more

No experience with their boarding, but I brought my dog for a grooming & bath. Got a call about an hour later that the groomer would not cut his hair the way I requested. I insisted that he'd been shaved before for and actually showed them a picture from last Summer. However, the groomer declined. Having scheduled this a few weeks prior, I insisted on a discount. We recently boarded out dog here, as we have numerous times before. As always, they took excellent care of our dog. We love that we can watch our dog on the camera. We always have our dog bathed at the end of the stay. They do a very good job. We highly recommend Barks B and B for boarding and grooming. read more

We brought our 1 year old 25lb dog here for a night and we had a good experience overall! The staff we met were all very friendly and seemed to be great with the dogs. We like that it's a smaller facility so our dog doesn't get lost in the mix. You can check in via the cameras though we never saw him playing, just laying down in the kennel - they do a mix of kennel and play time. Our dog was happy to see us in the morning but seemed in good spirits overall. We will return for daycare or boarding in the future! Def book in advance, especially in advance around holidays, since they're a smaller facility. read more

I decided to stop in today and get a tour of the facility as my daughter was planning on taking her puppy to that location. I was in the lobby waiting for someone I heard the employee say to a dog "shut up you Fucker" I was shocked and in disbelief that an employee at this facility would speak that way to one of the dogs. He walked in the lobby and I said to him "is that the way you speak to the dogs"? He was totally embarassed and said "sorry just a stressful morning". I would not recommend this facility as our dogs are family and I would not let my dog be spoken that way. Who knows what else goes on behind closed doors. read more

We have been traveling the country for the last year and a half as full time RV'ers. This has given us the opportunity to utilize numerous kennels across the country. While in the Denville area we used BB&B a couple of times. They are wonderful! Our 8 yr old Cavapoo was put on heart medication right before the 2nd time we came to Barks. We were nervous parents about his condition and not being in our care. The great staff at Barks made us feel so reassured that our buddy was in good hands. Plus, as a "helicoptering" pet parent, I have a love/hate relationship with doggie cams! (just ask the staff!) I came here a few times but the last time I took my pup, he came home terrified for over a week. The day he was groomed I received a call from them saying he was being "nippy". When I came to pick him up he looked ok from the cut but his demeanor was completely different. He wouldn't eat, play, or act in his usual playful way. He appeared traumatized and had accidents everywhere which is NOT normal for him. I don't know what they did to him but I will not be taking him back here again. read more

My dog got kennel cough, left with scratches, and had none of her bedding in her kennel anytime I checked on her through the cameras, only when I called was the bedding put back. When I called to see if they would help cover the treatment cost for her kennel cough I was met with pure indifference and told I signed a contract and that it wasn't their problem. It seems each time I come here, the experience is getting worse. We are not the type to complain because we understand people make mistakes and stuff happens. The first time we went there, it was great and we were pretty pleased. The second time we took her here - they said they didn't have any appointment in their schedule for my dog. We had proof of a phone call when we scheduled the appointment and it was in our calendars. They said they didn't have her anywhere on schedule. Instead of correcting the mistake and getting her in right away, they rescheduled her for two weeks later. That's fine - we understand things like this happen so we wouldn't dock it against them. When he finally took her in, they called because they couldn't finish cutting her because she was "moving too much and trying to bite the scissors". We kind of understand because Rylie had a wound she was trying to protect and is a young dog.... but at the same time.... you're a groomer. Isn't this like something you're used to? Dogs being intimidated by the razors and scissors? Isn't it your job to make sure that you can tame the dogs a little? But in any event, we didn't say anything and let it go. This next time, we took her here - we got a call two hours later. When I answered they were laughing and I had to say hello three times before she continued to talk and tell me what was going on. She said, "hi can you come pick up Rylie? We could only bathe her and nothing else because she was moving too much. The groomer recommends you take her to the vet next time and have her be sedated first before you take her to get groomed." Yeah I will not be spending $300 on a hair cut each time considering she's never had any trouble at any other groomers (but for some reason she does here), but thank you though. I come to pick her up, they don't say anything to me. (Mind you, I was not angry and I did not give them a hard time.) Then they have me pay and tip before seeing my dog. Then they bring Rylie out and her body is shaved, legs were not, face was not, the shave was choppy, and she could not see because her bangs were still so long. They didn't even attempt to correct it. It was so unprofessionally done. I expected for the groomer himself to at least come out and explain what happened, but there was no communication at all. They just handed her to us with a haircut that looks like a 12 year old did it without any explanation. I can understand if my dog gave them a hard time, but you can improvise and give them treats or peanut butter to distract them so that you can correct the choppiness. Which is what we did when we got home and Rylie sat still. In most professions, when a client is being difficult, you finish the work and THEN tell the client you cannot provide them with your services anymore - what you DO NOT do, is give up half way. I have never been so appalled at the complete lack of professionalism from any business in my life. Needless to say, we will never go back here. I don't feel like they gave my dog the care and attention that I would hope someone would take when handling my dog. read more

Barks is the only place I board my full-of-personality Chihuahua. The staff is amazing - they take great care of him! They understand his quirks and are able to give a little extra TLC when he needs it. I don't worry about him when he's there and I can check the cameras to see how he's doing. He gets plenty of play time when we board him. He also does the daycare and runs in with his tail wagging. We could not be happier with the care that Barks provides! read more

If I could give this place 0 stars I would. I had planned on boarding my dog here for 5 days. After seeing how my dog was neglected after 1 day I attempted to call 3 times to get in touch with someone. The owner, Meg, texted me back to let me know the staff was there to take care of the dogs, not to answer the phones. How unprofessional! My dog is staying at your business, you should be answering my phone calls and pick up the phone to talk to me, not text me. My Dog was taken out of the kennel for an hour a day, but Meg lied and said she was out more and walked- which we never saw on the video. Someone went into my dogs grate to "play" with her- for 1 minute and 30 seconds, then took her out for 9 seconds. Meg lied to me AGAIN saying someone played with my dog for 5 minutes then took her for a walk. This place should be shut down. The dogs are mistreated and neglected. The owner just cares about money and not the safety and happiness of the dogs. I would bring my dog back here if someone paid me. It wouldn't surprise me if a dog died here with the way they are neglected. DO NOT GO HERE!! read more

Boarded our two dogs in December when we had to go out of town for several days - loved that I could check in on them via their camera system and see how they were doing. They got baths the day I picked them up and they looked and smelled great. I've since brought them back for baths and nail trims and again they were fluffy, clean, dry and happy. Our new puppy loves going to day care at Barks. When we arrive, the staff makes him feel comfortable immediately. His tail is wagging and he gives the staff kisses. We love the attention and care that the staff provides. When we bring him home after a day at Barks, our puppy is exhausted from playing with all of his friends. With a few day visits in for both of our dogs lily and Chula...so far so good. We are slowly acclimating them as we are traveling on the end of the summer I need a place to board them for a week. We did an overnight trial run this evening and what concerned us is that we can't access them on camera once the lights go out at 9 o'clock. It's too dark and/or the cameras are off? We are first time dog boarders...very anxious...the allure of your place is the 24 hour monitoring by camera. Being able to see them at night is what we really needed to relieve some of the anxiety. What is a possible solution. They are used to having at least a little bit of light not complete darkness. I will share tomorrow when I pick them up what we do here at home... hopefully we can set up something like that. Overall we are very very pleased with the short-term daycare we've been doing and we are going to do several more overnights before our trip, but I would like to have a few things in place... Sorry for the long review and narrative but I just wanted to get some concerns out there. read more
