The inside is spruced up these days, and the parking lot is usually full of work trucks. Takeout is fast and service is always prompt and usually cheerful. The menu is "diner-meets-Appalachian-bistro" and reasonably priced. Nathan's hot dogs, all the breakfast things, soup beans & cornbread, chicken fried & Salisbury steaks, fried bologna sandwiches, and the next thing in my hitlist (if I can ever NOT get a burger here) is the pork tenderloin sandwich.

What I appreciate is that J's has its own distinctive taste In the barbecued meat and baked beans. I am not sure whether it's Memphis or TN or whatever but it is fabulous. French fries perfect, salad was fresh but could have used more toppings ie not enough onion and tomato. Corn dog was a splurge but it was good as well. Prices are extremely reasonable and I like it's a short drive from our home here in precious E-Town. I also like that they have friendly people working there who are patient and helpful. I wish they would go to online ordering but hey I can live without it. You know a place is good when BBQ places in Johnson City say "compared " to J's Highly recommended or

It came with a side of fries and a drink. The hamburger was soooo good, that I will come back have the same order! The fries were nice and crispy too! The service was top notch as the waitress kept refilling my drink and checking up on me. The place is so cute inside with many small tables you can eat your meal. I love this place! One thing to note, the menu prices are based on cash. They do take credit cards but there is a surcharge in using them. I will definitely be coming back!

The service was very friendly and the food was tasty with ample portions. The cost was very reasonable. If I were to be in the area again, I wouldn't hesitate to stop here for breakfast again. After the food and conversation, I continued on my way to Elizabethton for a round of golf.

We stopped for dinner the first night and I went back in the morning for breakfast. Nothing fancy small diner that the locals frequent. They have daily specials. They have all of the regular southern fair. Bestie said the cornbread reminded her of her nana (who was from Harlan County, Kentucky - so that tells me this is OG Appalachian cornbread). It's not like your typical Northeastern sweet cornbread. The menu had all your typical southern fair chicken fried steak soup beans, and cornbread. They serve breakfast all day. She got the beef vegetable soup with the cornbread. Beef vegetable soup was Campbell's. I had the patty melt, which was amazing. It was a 10 ounce freshly made patty on rye toast with grilled onions and Swiss cheese. It was the best patty melt. I've had in many years. My meal came with a small side of critical cut fries that were delicious. Service was friendly and fast. We went with besties's cousin for breakfast the next morning. I have the two eggs over easy with a biscuit and sausage gravy and two strips of bacon. That biscuit was amazing as a sausage gravy. Bacon was crisp and delicious. Service was again very fast and friendly they checked on us numerous times to freshen our coffee, which was greatly appreciated. If you're staying near Bristol or in Bluff City etc. check out the Bluff City Diner. It doesn't look like much from the outside, but the food was really good and the prices are extremely reasonable plenty of offstreet parking easy access for those who might have mobility issues.

The outdoor area can be loud due to its close proximity to the busy street. Not really much of a view; just the parking area and passing cars. Plenty of parking in front and to the side. They do have an inside dining area, but the host didn't give us that option. Our waitress was nice but wasn't very knowledgeable about the food; I asked her if the shrimp poboy came on hard or soft bread. She said soft so I ordered that. It was toasted to the point of being rock hard; actually cut my lip on it. Otherwise the poboy was pretty good, just hard to eat. The wife enjoyed her burger, but it wasn't anything special. And neither of us cared much for their side of chips; it's clearly their attempt to be different by not serving the usual French fries. But in our opinions, it's a fail. They were neither a tasty potato chip nor a fry, but something in between, that even ketchup couldn't make tasty. Interesting place to visit once, but I doubt we'll be back.

There is room adjacent to the building and more along the highway. I did not notice any specific handicapped spaces but the paved lot and no steps makes travel and entry fairly easy. We were greeted as we walked in and told to find a seat anywhere. Seating is a mix of booths and tables. We selected a small table on the other side of a half wall that splits the seating area into two parts. Our waitress dropped off menus and took our drink order right away. The drinks came back quickly and we asked for a few more minutes to look through the fairly large menu. After a couple more minutes, our waitress came by without being reminded and took our order. The food took a good 20 minutes to arrive. A few people who arrived after us got their orders before us so I don't know if there was a mix up in the kitchen or what. The food was hot when brought to the table, so for whatever reason ours just took longer. The Sunrise breakfast includes two eggs, a meat choice, and either biscuit or toast. The eggs and bacon were cooked as requested, and the biscuit was light and fluffy. My dining partner asked for jelly and was brought small cups of butter and jelly. There was plenty to enjoy on the biscuit without having to open the typical little jelly containers. The country breakfast included two eggs, a meat choice, and a biscuit and gravy. The eggs were cooked as requested. The sausage patty was done but not overdone. The biscuit was excellent, and the sausage gravy seems to be made from real fat so it has a ton of flavor. There was not a lot of sausage pieces, but certainly enough to notice. The flavor was outstanding and was the highlight of the meal. Blue Gills is an excellent choice for breakfast, and I am now looking forward to trying their lunch menu. There are a couple burgers that caught my eye.
