Their dog washing stations are amazing and reasonable with everything included (shampoo to use, washing tub, towels, brushes, and blow dryer included in one price). As someone with a disability, it's a big deal to be able to wash my girl in a space that will not require hours of clean up for such a resonable rate! I have had our dog groomed several times and twice after requesting groomer NOT shaving the tummy or under tail it was done anyhow. Our dog was bright red and had major irritation for 4 days . I can't recommend this place enough. My hound Clio was always giving the best treatment and came back spic and span every time. It can be a challenge to line up my schedule with theirs but it's well worth it and it's an incredible value for what they deliver 5 stars. My review is for a phone transaction with this company. We recently adopted a feral husky-poo, who is very fear-reactive, and is able to back out of pretty much any harness you put on her. We got Martingale collars at the suggestion of our trainer, but the pup has such flight reactions that she pulls excessively on the collar, which I fear she is hurting her neck from pulling (she has developed a dry-cough recently). After much research, I found a harness that may help her, and needed to get it quickly (so I can safely get her to vet). Called on a Sunday, and the woman who answered the phone was SUPER nice, checked to see if they had my pup's size (and color!), and they did. Even though they are not open on Mondays, the woman made arrangements for me to pick up the collar when I got into town (we are coming to Richmond from out of town for only a few days). What AMAZING customer service...without ever having entered this store, I am a fan. I will shop here when they are open, and my sweet, solid white feral pup...who WILL need groomed....will go here soon! They are rude and unprofessional. I asked them to not butcher my dog and to not shave him to the scalp. They will argue and get defensive if they are wrong. The groomer hung up abruptly. Do not bring your dog there for a grooming. Becca doesn't not do a good job. Brought my dog twice to give her another chance and both times I had to cut her fur after getting home to correct what she did. When I got my dog home from the last groom she only cut around her eyes and feet. Did not clip her nails. She was there for a full groom so I don't know what she did for 3 hours. We took our Westie boy here for years, but are now going to have to find a new groomer. Things have gone downhill! The last two cuts on our terrier mixes have been rough. The cut on our miniature schnauzer mix was recently butchered. See the pictures for the before and after. We asked that she be left as long as possible with a shaped up schnauzer head with some minor mats being cut out. She is a rescue and went through a thorough reshaping and wonderful grooming in Northern Virginia. Bark and Sparkle's staff ruined all that hard work. When questioned, Linda the owner, proceeded to lie about having discussed the cut with my wife and then admitted Bark & Sparkle does not take pet parents' request. They felt shaving her down would be the 'humane option'. We were ridiculed by the owner for not brushing and caring for our dog which was inappropriate and condescending. I couldn't believe what I was hearing after supporting this business for many years. The audacity of this woman is appalling and the community should be made aware. We are very experienced pet parents of terriers and toy breeds. The few mats our pup had were VERY minor and could have been brushed out or delicately scissor trimmed by any professional groomer. They either made a mistake on her face and covered it up with a shave or were not willing to take the time to do the cut properly or acknowledge their mistake. Instead they blamed us and charged nearly $100 to completely ignore our wishes as pet parents and put our pup through a rushed, harsh, nearly skin tight shave. After the recent snow, our one hundred pound Bernese Mountain Dog was stinking to high heaven. Enter Bark and Sparkle. We found them via Google search and showed up to use the self service bath tubs. We got a $2 discount for being first time customers and a huge drawstring bag full of sample goodies from the shop. We usually take our big boy to Petco for grooming but will be back if he needs a quick bath in between his normal appointments. read more

Every time I bring my doggos here for a nail trim the people are great. They are good with the dogs and friendly. My dogs don't come back to me upset in any way! I love the mail grind option. Found SEVERAL scabs on my puppy, and to top things off the lady at the front desk was also extremely rude, no sense of customer service. My puppy was shaved almost to his skin, and his ears were just chopped straight. No talent whatsoever, seems like there was no training in any area of this place. Extremely dissatisfied with this business. I'll try to keep this review short. Today was the 3rd time that I have taken my 10 year old Maltipoo to Bark & Sparkle to be groomed. Today is also the last time I will ever take my dog there to be groomed. First of all, the young ladies that are managing the phones & booking appointments need some training in phone etiquette and how to politely talk to clients. They were very unprofessional, seemed aloof, and just plain rude. They're the first point of contact that clients interact with-you would expect them to be friendly and helpful. That's definitely not the case. I spoke with an employee the day prior to my dog's appointment about how I would like him cut-exactly how they had done it the previous 2 times, but trim his tail & ears a bit shorter. When my husband got home from picking up our dog and I saw his cut, I had to do a double take. He looked exactly the same as he did when he left that morning. His face was dirty & obviously hadn't been cleaned, his tail & ears hadn't been touched, his belly was cut uneven, he didn't even smell the normal 'freshly groomed' scent. I immediately called and spoke with an employee and explained to her that I was very unhappy and wanted to know what they were going to do to fix it-especially since I had just spent $70.00 on his cut! We decided that I would bring my dog back tomorrow and they would fix the areas that I wasn't happy with. He would need an entire groom, he had hardly been touched at all. After reading numerous reviews about B&S I have since decided not to take him back to be fixed. Numerous people talked about how their dogs were cut, bleeding, botched...that's the absolute last thing I would want to happen to my dog. We will most definitely be taking our business elsewhere. Very disappointed with our experience and the fact that we just wasted $70. Upon further inspection, my dogs nails were not even cut. This place is an absolute joke. They are an excellent staff, really care about your pets health, well being and nutritional advice is spot on! i have a elderly pug with skin and tummy issues and the ACANA Duck and Pear formula (s) that Linda uses with her own dogs is AMAZING!! Pug is feeling great! I haven't used the tubs or salon, but they appear very clean, as staff are constantly cleaning& sanitizing. As well, all the doggies look great coming out of the salon! I live in downtown Richmond and work in the Woodlake area, so I was delighted to see that there is a pet store that carries Fromm, which can be hard to find. I can't speak in reference to the groomers since I was just picking up dog food, but the young lady checking me out was incredibly unfriendly. Even when I came up to the counter with a 12-pound bag of dog food, she didn't acknowledge me. I was like "Can I get this?" I tried to make conversation with her, and she just wasn't having it. I was wondering what I had done or said to warrant such unfriendly treatment. It was awkward! I am pretty new to the Richmond area, but in the past, one of the greatest things about mom 'n' pop-type pet food stores--as opposed to the big box Pet Smart type places--is the community aspect. The relationship between customer and groomer may be much better here, but the retail situation leaves much to be desired! read more

I visited the shop looking for education and guidance to care for my 8month old poodle. I was met with relentless shame and judgement. the owner explained in no uncertain terms that I am an abusive and neglectful dog owner and that he is in immense pain. my dog is the focal point of my life and is brushed often. things escalated quickly when the owner tried to physically prevent me from taking my dog with me, and telling me that she was concerned for him. she ultimately deadbolt locked me inside her establishment to wait for the police that she had called. once they did it was explained to her that her behavior was illegal and unsubstantiated and I was free to go. I will go forward and find a groomer with more heart and more empathy. someone who understands that poodles roamed the earth long before people came along who realized there's big money involved in playing off the sympathies of pet owners by making their dogs look like big sissy's. read more

We LOVE Bark and Sparkle and will forever bring our pups here for nail trims and grooming. I have a loving beagle who's TERRIFIED of nail trims, so much so that vets have suggested sedation when he needs them trimmed. This was out of the question for us. We heard the owner handles situations like ours and always request her every time to cut his nails! Shes been the only one to do it quickly and as trauma free as possible! I couldn't be more thankful for this business and lovely staff. P.S. the shampoo they use smells AMAZING and lasts a good while! I was so disappointed with the services I received from bark and sparkle my little 7 pound dog looks like a shaved rat for $70 they couldn't even put a bow in her hair or a bandanna around her neck she has no eyebrows no cute face just completely shaved down I brushed her every night she had long beautiful hair soft I asked for a puppy cut or a summer trim I specifically said do not shave her she came out looking like a shaved rat and what's interesting is that you leave your tip before you get and see your dog so that's interesting I wish I had seen her before I left a tip because the tip would've been zero I will never return. read more

I just got home with my cocker spaniel. I couldn't be more in love. They treated me amazingly, despite being a mess when I dropped her off, shaved her completely (most places take it on themselves to leave her "poof" on the top of her head), and were super quick. And the prices are amazing. Cheaper than a lot of the other groomers I've been too, and did a much better job (and their prices actually included nails and a bath, unlike others I've been too). read more

We have been here twice for grooming. The first time was with our dog who needed a bath and brush really bad. We had gotten bad at not brushing her as often as we should. The price was reasonable ($50). The did the furminator deshedding treatment and our dog looked amazing when she was done about two hours later. The groomer told us she brushed her for over an hour getting the undercoat out. We couldn't have been happier on our first visit. The second visit was for a cockapoo we were fostering who needed a summer cut. Once again the groomer did an amazing job and he looked like a different dog, but in a good way. The staff are always friendly and willing to talk to you about anything. We have never done the self-grooming here but are willing to give it a try with the cockapoo. Our dog didn't respond well to the self-grooming at another location so we will stick with the grooming. read more

We loved Bark & Sparkle! I took my Golden, Ellie, here for a full service groom. The shop is nice and clean, and the service is great. Their website is very thorough. Linda helped us out at the front, checking Ellie in. My pup's "stylist," Chelsea, came out to meet us, which was great. It's nice to shake hands with the person who is about to handle your precious pup. We discussed the trim I wanted for Ellie, and I felt comfortable leaving her there. Chelsea is sweet and calm, and my dog loved her! The grooming was super fast, and when I picked Ellie up, she was tail waggin' all around the shop, looking FAB. Excellent trim, not to short, not to long - the perfect Golden grooming. I appreciated that they didn't feed her anything without asking, because my pup has a sensitive tummy. I also like that she genuinely smells clean, not like dog perfume. The price was right, actually a bit cheaper than quoted. Chelsea did a great job and paid attention to details with Ellie's trim. She looks ready to go somewhere fancy! This shop is great, I'll be back to use the self-service tubs to save my back in between groomings. We've been to many groomers over the life of my 14 & 10 year old dogs life, we have really enjoyed the experience of the full service grooming here! The price is wonderful, and my dogs who used to go in and refuse to move go back happily with the groomers. Cute are always just as asked for! One time we had a small medical issue with my older dog and the owner took us next door to be with us and the vet looked her over. We found a new vet that day too! read more

DO NOT BRING YOUR DOG HERE! If I could leave less than 1 star I would. After reading other reviews, I find a similar pattern happening with how disrespectful this owner is and the company she runs. I have brought our Goldendoodle to Bark & Sparkle several times in the past without issues. However, yesterday we picked up our dog from a routine haircut and it was horrific. He was gushing blood out of his foot from them cutting his nails too short. (I have pictures of my car seat from the blood coming from his foot) We brought him back into the building to find out why he was bleeding and they brushed it off like it was nothing, put some ointment on him and sent him on his way. His nails were cut so short from the quick it looked like they were done with very dull scissors. Additionally, his hair was cut so short that he started bleeding down the side of his body and shoulders once we got home. They shaved his head, face, and entire body and he has razor burn all over him. They cut his whiskers, which is the worst thing you can do to a dog, especially when his face was not matted. I understand that the mats on his back would be hard to get out, but that is why we don't go to Petco or Petsmart to get a botched job. Our dog was obviously uncomfortable and clearly under a lot of stress leaving, which he never has been before. After calling numerous times about how bad our dog was treated and obviously the "level of care" they provided was less than satisfactory. The owner called back to tell us that she would give us a 10% discount on our next visit. We explained that we would never be bringing him back after how terrible his hair cut was and the emotional stress that was put on our poor dog. She told us that the groomer was not as experienced as her other technicians and to send pictures of the blood on our dog. Unfortunately, she called us back hours after we had called that morning, not expecting to need photos of the abuse our dog endured and cleaned him off. She said that was the only way we would be getting a refund. After calling her back and explaining that not an acceptable response she stated that we could "pray to Jesus". She continued to say that if "we don't believe in Jesus, than she doesn't want our business anyways." I don't know why religion was brought into this conversation in the first place. On top of all this she stated she has "fired clients" because of their religious beliefs... Is that legal to discriminate against religious beliefs as a business owner? YES. Regardless, my dog being abused at her establishment has nothing to do with her religious beliefs or mine. I honestly just wanted my $99 refunded and I would have been fine. After she told us that she would not be giving us a refund, I stated we would be writing a review about the abuse our dog endured at her business, she said "Great! Free publicity for me". I do not know how her doors are still open with the business owner treating clients this way or her groomers treating an animal this way. This is animal abuse and is unacceptable. All I wanted was a refund and I got excuse after excuse how she couldn't refund our money because we did not believe in her religious beliefs. Linda Theuerkauf is not spreading the "Word of God", as she so eloquently put it, she is disrespectful and obviously does not care about your fur-babies or your business after the terrible customer service we have experience.
