Barbely's is one of the most unique Restaurants on the Eastern Shore of MD. It is only open Friday and Saturday evening. But let me tell you it had some of the Best Maryland Fried Chicken that this retired Chef has ever eaten. Biscuits that are lighter then air. Coconut Muffins with Honey Butter are served as you sit. The menu is limited to some real traditional dishes. Crab cake , Freire Shrimp and or Flounder . Great sides like Coleslaw, Southerb style Green beans, Mustard Greens, Mashed Potatoes, and Macaroni and Cheese. Desserts are first rate and are all homemade. Service can be harried and disjointed but it's more then made up by the superb food. It's a Maryland Gem, definitely a real find. read more

This is comfort food at it's finest! We are very partial to family owned and run restaurants that serve quality comfort food. It doesn't get any better than Barbely. Janice, the grandmother, is front of house and makes the to-die-for scratch desserts. (I'd go there just for those!) Bruce, dad, is a master in the kitchen, and Jason, son, is a most efficient waiter. We feel at home the minute we walk in the door. I can't think of anything we've eaten there that was not excellent. The stuffed pork chops with gravy are so wonderful you'll dream about them. This is a restaurant that was opened by Hungarian immigrants in the 1950s and their recipes are still in use today. We were looking for dinner on our long drive back to Philadephia, and boy did we luck out finding this place. An old general store turned down home restaurant in the middle of nowhere, Maryland eastern shore (between Snow Hill and Berlin). According to my family, this place packs them in all on account of word of mouth. Make a reservation - it is only open Thursday - Saturday at 4:30. It is my understanding that a couple and their son are the primary owners, chefs, and operators of this joint. Family recipes made with all fresh ingredients. The decor is antique and kitchy, and everything you you see also has a price tag for purchase. The tables are straight from your dining room. Drinks come in mason jars - yee haw. I had the petite crab cake which was plenty large for me and fried to perfection. A lot of crab, a little filler, some spices for flavor - just the way it should be. For sides, I chose mac n cheese and green beans. The mac n cheese was more casserole in nature, not creamy. It was okay but wouldn't make my m&cheese top 10 list. The green beans had a good flavor but were a little on the peppery side. Everything about my plate screamed homemade, which I loved. My husband had the prime rib and raved over the included au jus, as it was sweet and delicious. His steak was cooked well but the cut was more boney/fatty than he'd normally prefer. My grandpa loves the peas&dumplings soup and many people told me the fried chicken was also a must have. The biggest must-have are the homemade desserts - strawberry pie, lemon meringue pie, and apple dumplings on the day we went. The sweet muffins on the table were also heavenly. Basically, where we hail from, mom and pop places are few and far between so I'm instantly in love with all of those I encounter while traveling. read more

Thought to myself, should this be 5 stars, Yes but that would mean that its perfect however there is room for improvement. A+ to the food. A+ to the setting. And super A+ for the staff. The owner was there to check on us, (party of 11 people) & the chef came out to see how we liked the food. About the the only thing i would have liked to see was the menu. Even on regular paper, a little microsoft word, might do wonders. I like to believe its because of the freshness of the food it keeps changing. I loved the old time feel to the place. WOW! I do not know how we have never heard of this place until now. Home cooking like I have not had since my grandmother could no longer do Sunday dinners. I got stuffed pork chops with mashed potatoes and gravy and lima beans and corn. My husband got grilled rockfish, fried shrimp and a crab cake. For dessert, we got Barbely's cake and an apple dumpling. Every bite brought back memories from days long gone. This place is in my tiny hometown so I might be a little bit biased. But it is a diamond in the rough. Worth a drive if you are staying in Ocean City. Delicious Eastern Shore homestyle food in a quaint historical setting, and yes, it is in the middle of nowhere. Our table's favorite dish was the lima, corn, and dumplings soup studded with salty ham. Actually, my one critique was that everything was just a bit too salty. I have been here twice it a hidden gem. We only found out about it from locals. Our first time there I had soft crabs and were delicious. But in June we went and my mother and I ordered crab cakes and were not very good at all. Was all filler and very little taste. Being from Maryland we know good crab cakes. Husband had fried chicken and loved it. Will definitely go back but never ordering crab cakes! read more

Great homemade food in a rustic setting. Kinda like an old-time store. My son & I dined here one evening based on a friends' recommendation & we were pleasantly surprised. Reminded me of my grandmother's cooking since I was born & raised on the eastern shore. The peas n dumplings soup was ok...needed a little more salt n pepper & would have liked it thicker.
