Perf dive with a funny bartender. The drinks were flowing as they should. Shuffle board in the back! Ambiance is as expected.

Don't go here, it could be such a great bar but the place has such a negative vibe due to the unwelcoming attitude of the bartenders and owner. read more

Strong dive bar in a city with many good options. Cheap beer and wells. Can't ask for more than that folks. GB

Cool little dive bar in the middle of town!! It's a great place to stop for a quick drink while shopping downtown. Great service and a lot of history. Right on the Riverwalk. It's a real treasure 1.50$ for PBR 16oz. and a Full bar. Fun stop!! read more

I have been here a few times and have waited to post my review based on what my next experience could be. I like it here a lot, the atmosphere is fun and relaxing. The music is great, especially with the music box available to choose what you want to hear also (have to pay for that). There is a pool table which is nice and gives it more of that bar feel. Service is okay, always a little stand offish but you get what you need. This is another place that looks small on the outside, but when you walk in there is actually a lot more room and there is an outside also. It's not a huge back patio but it's there when you need some fresh air. I absolutely hate their restrooms. This is one place out of all the bars/restaurants in Wilmington that I would rather avoid. As you can see from my photos there are a ton of holes in the wall, a space between the door and bar area, and just overall uncomfortable. I do not like going somewhere I feel like someone is watching me. There are holes at every level that make me feel like I'm being surrounded by eyes and I get the creeps, especially when I can see the light shining in from the bar. Besides that, it's a good place to start drinking on a Friday/Saturday night. read more

$1.50 16oz pbr and $4 wells on a Saturday night in this economy; I can't imagine anyone having a bad time here. Usually with these prices there are two weirdos at the bar but they had a good crowd and good music. read more

Can't beat these prices. $1.50 for PBR tall boy. Not too much of a line on a Saturday night. Decent crowd once inside. Great dive bar vibes at an affordable price. read more

One of my favorite dive bars in Wilmington! I absolutely love the grunge look of it and how welcoming it feels. My favorite part of this bar is the TouchTunes !! I love when the costumers have a day in what music they want to listen to. read more

They just offer drinks but the owner is awesome an will give you all the trivia about the bar including super Mario brothers movie.

Nice place, very friendly dive like but still cool. Mix of people old/young local/tourist and, ugly/pretty (us), over all nice place to have a few cheap drinks and talk to locals and listen to Juke box read more

this place has such a nice vibe !! they make really good drinks and the service is so great!!!

It takes 5-9 times in the Barbary to appreciate the Barbary. Is it a dive bar? Absolutely it's a dive bar. But if you haven't been a regular in a dive bar at some point in your life, then you have not lived. This is a dive bar, and a good dive bar at that. read more

Decided to check this place out while we waited for the Little Dipper up the street to open. We were fully prepared to spend money but it was is we were invisible. There was only 3 people plus the bartender in there so it wasn't like he was to busy to acknowledge us. After waiting 5 minutes to be asked if we wanted anything, that we needed to come to the bar to order or even a hello we left. It might be the oldest bar in Wilmington but it's also the least hospitable. read more

First, let me state that the Barbary is not for everyone. But I love the place. $1.50 PBR pints all the time, and that's what 90% of the bar drinks. The place is almost always crowded, usually with the same people. If you're looking for somewhere classy - go somewhere else. If you're looking for somewhere interesting, though, I haven't found anywhere with more interesting people than the Barbary. read more

The place where bad decisions are born! Great local dive bar. Interesting crowd, but everyone is friendly. read more

Maybe I'm not a very discerning dive bar consumer. When the lighting is dim, drinks are cheap, service is friendly, and patrons are gruff, I'm at home. When a cab driver tells me that she "cannot even" or that she fears knife throwing hijinx at a dive, my interest is piqued. Though Barbary Coast's knife throwing days are over, the lighting is still low, drinks are hella cheap, and both bartenders and patrons are friendly. What I'm trying to say is this place is very much my speed. read more

Definitely a dive bar. Maybe it's the fact I've only been here twice, but here goes. If you're 10 beers deep into an evening, head here. If you're looking for something a sailor might not even touch, pick up your ladies here. If you're looking for a place where the bathroom doesn't smell like barf, do not come here! All the cons out the way, the service was awesome, the drinks overflowing, and all for a good price. This place puts the dive into dive bar. read more

Webster's definition of "Dive Bar"! What you'll see: blue collar/artistic locals drinking PBR beers. Its a dog friendly bar. I actually saw a dog sitting on a bar stool at the bar! Claims the title of oldest bar in Wilmington. read more

We were looking for a dive bar and this hit the spot. Cheap drinks, a good mix of people and a good bartender. They had 3 dollar orange bombs which I loved! Amanda the bartender was funny and attentive! TouchTunes on the jukebox so you'd hear the whole spectrum from rock to rap and country. This bar has been around since I was underage and just as fun as I remember! read more

Haven't been tere since 2000. Loved everything about it including Zeus or Hercules (can't remember) the dog that layed across the floor. Anyone tell me the name of the underground hideout bar I used to go to down the street? It's killing me. Rumors of spirits hangin out in the place? read more

Definite dive bar. Like seriously look dive bar up in the dictionary and this place has a photo. i love it. Captain Norris is a reg and will literally call his car service to take you home or he will buy you a shot. Jukebox is always active and they have pool, 5 dive bar stars read more

Word on the street is that it lowers your core score to review dive bars on Yelp. I'll compromise and give Barbary the appropriate one star rating. Beware of 5 star dive bars, they may have already been invaded! Look closely for designer vans/chuck taylors, abercrombie v-necks and concert t-shirts, proving they were there. How did I not pick up on this sooner. Dammit. I feel like a douche. read more

I love this place, when i go home to Wilmington (for christmas or during the summer) its the first bar I go to. Its a great dive bar and its the only downtown bar that express the Cape Fear culture. (umm you know what i mean, i need another PBR) Cheers to all my friends in the Port City. read more

Stopped in for a quick beer with wife last month. First off, you don't usually find a bar this nice and seedy in this kind of area. Wood floor, dark, couple of folks playing pool. First suprise, behind the bar is the beer collection. They have over 100 different brands of bottled. A bunch of good drafts too. And cheap cheap cheap!!! Out back door, tiny little patio overlooking Cape Fear river. Girl on cell phone next to me selling, uhhh... "something" to a friend of hers. Didn't seem to be concerned at all that I was obviously not a regular. This was middle of day, can't vouch for late at night. Some "sketchy" graffiti in toilet, so who knows? But during day, had the nice atmosphere of a few friendly folks, some looking ruff, some dressed up, just loving "a good beer buzz early in the morning..." very nice, if you are from the steel belt, or certain parts of Boston, you will like the look and feel. read more

I downloaded the Yelp App just to mention how awful this place is. We stopped in to drink a beer, play some pool, and listen to some good music. We spent $20 on the juke box just to come and find out they don't allow the best song in the world, which is Africa by Toto, obviously. They didn't even give us a refund for it. On top of that, the pool table was broken and shuffle board is slanted too badly to even play. There is no dart board, as advertised. We put another $10 or so and bumped Cardi B to the top of the list before leaving. Oh yea, Cardi B is allowed but not Toto . This place was for the birds! read more

A great local bar. Very eclectic in it's clientele. The door guys and the bartenders will make you feel very welcome. Always has great drink specials running. This is the oldest bar in Wilmington, so it's fun to feel a part of the social history of downtown. Be sure to include this on your list as you explore downtown. Don't forget to enjoy the back deck! read more

Last time I was in Wilmington I visited this bar for the first time. I don't know why the hell I didn't the last time. I ended up spending most of my night here. It has everything. A great beer selection, pool tables, jukebox, and a diverse crowd. This place definitely isn't for everyone...and then again, it totally is. There were so many different walks of life that anyone could feel comfortable here. The place just reeks of comfortability. The bartenders kicked ass and the crowd was cool. Definitely a must hang when in Wilmington. read more

Beer joints, not many authentic ones left. But Barbary Coast is the real deal. It used to be wild but now it's mild so your girlfriend or mama is gonna be pretty safe here. PBR has never tasted better when it comes from a tap and even the most snobbish of my craft beer friends will gladly stop in Barbary Coast for a pint of PBR. read more

Awesome bar. The sinks are pretty broken in the bathroom. It's dirty. I loved it.
