My wife and I have stopped at San Juan for a night, before flying back home after cruise, and Barbacoa was the restaurant that was selected for the dinner. The reasons why we went to Barbacoa - it is a smokehouse, it was recommended by the staff at our hotel, it was literally less than 10 minutes walk and it had a decent rating at Yelp. Let's start with the drinks - I had never tried the particular IPA they had to talk about taste, but it was cold and served fast. Wifey's white wine was good. We have shared Smoked Guacamole for appetizer and it was very good (it would have been simply great if it had a little more salt added). The warm "chips" really made this dish shine, absolutely fantastic. The main course - Smoked Pastrami sandwich with fries was terrific, very big and tasty. I wouldn't change a thing in it. I had a half rack of baby back ribs with coleslaw. Coleslaw seemed like it hasn't been salted at all, but that was the only bad thing I can tell about the dinner. The ribs were cooked phenomenally well, I couldn't stop myself and ate them all. Deserts? Sorry, but no information from me here, because our stomachs were completely full. The staff was very friendly, attentive, efficient and helpful when needed. A real pleasure. The atmosphere of the restaurant is casual, nice and clean, not much to say. I really liked the paintings. Summing up: for the money we have paid it is an absolute gem. Very good food, friendly and efficient service. I should have probably gave 4 stars instead of 5 for some lack of salt in two dishes, but I just can't because I enjoyed the rest of the dinner big time. read more

This place is not great, if you want a true steak experience, go to La Burgett, it's the best. Now on to barbacoa: This restaurant is a roller coaster of different experiences. There were great moments, terrible moments and so so moments. It's truly unfortunate that the experience wasn't better, but in all honesty, I see the promise this restaurant holds. So here goes... The good: The drinks were great! We had sangria, margaritas, etc. The appetizers were generally amazing. We had the cheese balls, the sliders and the wings. They all tasted great were highly enjoyable. The steaks were very well prepared but... The bad: ...there were bland. We had the brisket, 2 rib eyes and baby back ribs. Although all of them were cooked to perfection, they all lacked seasoning and were bland. Although everyone's sides were good, mine, which was macaroni and cheese, tasted of nothing. It wasn't just me, my friends also tasted it and tasted like nothing. I returned the Mac and cheese and it took them a good 10 minutes to give me the fries as a replacement. By this point I had finished my food. Oh well. Overall I think this restaurant has a chance for greatness, but needs to improve a lot to get there. read more

Barbacoa staff was amazing but the food lacked seasoning. Out of our 5 day trip in Puerto Rico this was the most expensive and lowest quality of food we had. Very disappointed with the price and quality of food. The ribs is what they are known for and they tasted funky. The fries were soggy and the Mac and cheese had no salt. The burger I ordered had Puerto Rican bread as buns and the burger was dry. This place was a big disappointment. read more

A group of friends met here for dinner after being suggested this place by a bartender at the old ESJ now St. Claire Mare here in Isla Verde. We wanted a local place, fun atmosphere off the beaten path and with good bbq and meat dishes. And this restaurant didn't disappoint us at all. Great vibe and welcoming once we walked in. I love brisket... I LOVE it. It's the first thing I get at every BBQ place I can get it at. So you should take it seriously when I say that this place has THE BEST brisket I have had in . . . 3 years? It's tender, it's smokey, it's delicate, but it keep's shape. The sauce... (let's take a minute to talk about the sauce)... it was MIND BLOWING. I guess it was a red wine reduction, I should have asked more but I couldn't because I was shoveling delicious brisket into my gullet as fast as I could. The Steakhouse is next to a butcher shop that it's affiliated with (quality). Some of the steaks come direct from the shop so be sure to ask which. Ill be returning soon to try the ribs and, all the sides. Oh, they also had some homemade carrot cake that was some next level moisty desert food. Cream cheese icing and all for your face to enjoy. My wife and I came here for dinner one night. The area of town was a little sketchy, but other than that our experience was great! She got a steak (was a little chewy for her liking but tasted good), and I got the double steakburger which was great! Don't let the neighborhood deter you. This is in the more out of way area and not the best location, but inside is entirely different. We were staying at a VRBO around the corner so it was a perfect location. Great happy hour specials and food. Had mojitos that were fantastic (and quite strong)- we came here twice and each time had assortments of meals that we all enjoyed. Steak sliders, smoked guacamole, steak, burgers- too much to name. Everything was fantastic! On the last night, we even took food to go back on the plane with us the next day!! There was a man playing saxophone for evening entertainment which was fun too! We just had the BEST experience here! We sat at the bar and got to know the owner Ángel. He personally made us drinks and recommended the best food. I ordered mahi mahi croquets from the ones he just caught himself! We also got ribs and pulled pork loaded fries and tried a bunch of amazing sauces - everything was ON POINT. Meat was award winning and stood to prove it, the fries were SOOOO good, the sauces were everything. I feel we have made a friend and definitely a new favorite spot. They have a super cool option for $7 that buys a round of beers for everyone in the kitchen. Ángel knew all their favorite drinks and they each came out to say cheers! I think that's so neat he has that option, have him pour you a shot of coffee Patron! The story and people behind this place warm my heart. Poor food experience to say the least. I've had better barbecue at backyard cookouts than at this place. The wait time after ordering was 45 minutes, and the food lacked flavor. The "roasted" chicken was pale and bland, the chicken and avocado salad was made with wilted lettuce and dried, old chicken. Not worth the price or the time. read more

My boyfriend stumbled across this spot while touring San Juan. The food here is amazing! I had the steak double burger, my boyfriend had the 10 oz steak, my friend had the brisket, her boyfriend had the New York Strip steak and everyones food was so delicious! Me and my girlfriend entered this establishment at 7:53pm, a waiter didn't come to our table until 8:09 to even great us let alone take our order. We received one of our appetizer at 9:10! We told the two different waiters can we just pack our food and go. We canceled reservation in Condado because it's Valentine's days and finding park over there is hectic. There was party of 3 three that came after us, they were taken care of us quick and they received their food faster then us. My girlfriend literally was drinking a Ginger Ale for over an hour. The chiccaron didn't even look like a chiccaron, it look like grilled chicken strips and it was cold. We received the tostones 30 minutes later. It's sad they were good, but just the time it came and the lack of attention. The waiter told us that manager was packing up the food for free, that was kind.
