To place this boulangerie among the top is a grand statement indeed, and I stand by it. Miss Madeleine consistently churns out freshly baked goods that you can smell half a block away. If you're lucky, you may arrive on a day when the bread baskets are being filled with items fresh from the oven, which was the case on my last visit. I come here for my favorite treat from the menu: the ham and cheese croissant. Flaky on the outside yet soft and custardy on the inside, cheese light and melty slathered all over the tender sliver of ham. Warm, of course, having been pulled out not too long ago from the oven. I've tried other goods from this shop, including the leek and chives pastry that is packed full of flavor, and a slice of pistachio cake, also delicious and not too sweet. Miss Madeleine is a neighborhood favorite, and it will soon be yours if you give it a chance.

It's flaky, buttery, chocolately, and tender with some crispy edges. The cinnamon ones were good, but the chocolate ones are my favorite here. The cheese & cherry rugelach were delicious and fluffy with the right amount of sweetness and filling. I've previously had some of their other items, and can also recommend the dark chocolate babka (which I was lucky enough to purchase one time while it was still warm), the pistachio cherry croissant, and the spicy cheese stick. We also tried the almond pear tart, which was excellent. The crust was buttery and crisp, and the frangipane had a wonderful almond flavor that paired beautifully with the pears. We ordered the pear almond tart along with the set of three cream puff choux. Both were excellent, but the cream puffs were definitely the highlight. The choux shells were light and delicate, while the fillings were rich without being overly sweet. The salted caramel was my favorite--beautifully balanced with just the right amount of sweetness and a subtle hint of salt. My partner especially loved the lemon meringue, which was bright, refreshing, and full of citrus flavor. The pear almond tart was equally memorable. The almond filling immediately reminded us of a galette des rois frangipane, making it comforting, buttery, and incredibly satisfying. Combined with the pears, it struck a wonderful balance of richness and fruitiness. Everything tasted thoughtfully made with high-quality ingredients, and it's easy to see why Barachou has developed such a loyal following. It apparently used to be a standalone brick & mortar but turns out, it's located inside Cafe D'anvers now. We were looking for a few minutes before figuring that out. They have 5 flavors to choose from; we went with the Hazelnut Praline. The hazelnut was rich, nutty, and sweet while the mousse was creamy, smooth, and light. I really enjoyed it and definitely could've eaten another 3oz on my own! Aside from it being a bit hard to find (some signage would help), it was a great try!
