Delightful way to spend a Sunday morning/afternoon here with the live jazz music, delicious affordable dishes, and young crowd. I had the eggs benedict salmon dish which was very yummy, and much cheaper than other times I've had it in Manhattan. Its very French here, so if there's something about the French you don't do, then you may want to continue on elsewhere. I would eat here again if ever in Brooklyn again. read more

Went to this place while visiting my roommate over winter break with a friend. Really cool spot. Had coq au vin, absolutely delicious. The server was very friendly, conversational. Ambiance couldn't have been better, it was a great place to share a meal among friends. Felt much like one of the restaurants I visited in Paris, gives off a good French feel. Live music can be terrible at many restaurants, but here it was great. Would definitely visit again. read more

Came here for a dinner on a Sunday night with my boyfriend. Although I wasn't looking to eat too much, we ended up eating a ton. There was live music in the front of the restaurant. I ordered a glass of red wine. My boyfriend started with the duck salad (very good but the flavor was a bit overwhelming -- maybe a bit too much dressing) and ordered a fish entree (can't remember which one). I tried the special that night: duck breast which was good (but not the best duck dish I've ever had). Overall our meal was good and I would most likely come back since we're always in the area. read more

A bit crowded, yes, but nonetheless I had a pleasant time. As long as you're Assertive and ask for a table, I think you'll get one just fine. Went on a Monday afternoon so it wasn't so loud. Burger bar tabac is pretty good. Duck salad was also nice. I don't live in the area but if I did I'd go back, so try it once if you haven't, it's a cute scene. read more

I've been here at least a half dozen times now and I've never been let down by the food, drinks, service or atmosphere. It's basically the heart of the Cobble Hill/Boerum Hill neighborhood intersection. If you're looking to complain, you'll find a reason. If you're looking for a great time and good food at decent prices, you'll be happy. Pretty much CASH ONLY. read more

We ordered the Croque Monsieur and Eggs Norwegian, and they were both solid. The fresh lemonade added a refreshing touch to our rather heavy brunch. Another bonus, dog parents: you can sit in the outdoor tables and tie your kid on a nearby tree. read more

A romantic french bistro bar right on Smith St that delivers. I sat at the bar on cold Saturday afternoon after a walk through Brooklyn during my most recent visit. I had a couple draft IPAs then enjoyed the steak and eggs with frites. The steak was cooked just as I had ordered it and everything came out hot and well-seasoned. The draft pulls were done well and the bartender was kind and the right amount of chatty. The manager/owner (not sure if he was both) came around to great everyone around the restaurant. Made you feel like you were a regular and that they appreciated your business. If I lived in the area, I would definitely become a regular. Intimate bar for a casual lazy weekend stop. read more

I love this place for its atmosphere and for the good times I've had here with good people. I do not love this place for the terrible boxed wine that is served for $9 and passed off as a legitimate wine. I do not have anything against boxed wine but this stuff was MERDE. Get a better house red!!!!! read more

I had a nice dinner here this week. The live music (on a weeknight) was a pleasant surprise, and it was the only restaurant in the area that actually had a crowd. The volume inside was a little loud and I had a hard time hearing the waiter- might be nice if they had the specials written somewhere besides the exterior of the restaurant. I had a delicious duck salad, with a side of mushroom risotto while my boyfriend had the trout. Both were very rich and flavorful. Considering the quality and size of the portions, the menu seemed very reasonably priced. The service otherwise was nothing to rave about, but certainly better than the service I'm used to receiving at Williamsburg restaurants. Update: came back again this week. This time, no wait thankfully. The tuna tartare was very tasty as an appetizer. I had the scallop salad also, which was fine, though the contents of the salad itself didn't feel that thoughtful in terms of complementing the scallops. My boyfriend had the swordfish, which was also fine, but nothing special. I guess I'll just have to figure out what the best things on the menu are, and stick to those. read more

Very friendly.....until they've got their tip. Then it's "um, you guys have to leave because we have a line up waiting for tables" This not even 10 minutes after paying the bill and leaving a 20% tip. Unbelievable, last time I go there, I've never, ever seen that kind of behavior. Absolutely the worst, low down customer service. read more

Last time I was in, I had my usual mussels + duck salad, but also had the special, a tomato and goat cheese tart. Fantabulous. Amanda, you're my favorite server at Tabac yet. Awesome suggestions and a hell of a lot of patience for putting up with me and 5 girlfriends. Pancho still lovya baby but Amanda is my new number 1. read more

I arrived for the first time at Bar Tabac to hear the sounds of Lipbone Redding, a great band, and a must see. The atmosphere is French themed but, in my opinion, that is where the similarity ends. The food was not good. The fries were greasy and the burger was mediocre. The worst was the lack of customer service. I had to look for a waitress then interrupt her conversation to get seated then the food took too long and the fries were cold. Worst of them all... the waitress did not tell me that the credit card machine was out of service so after the meal she told me I had to go to an ATM and pull out cash. So this mediocre burger and a beer cost me $20 plus the ATM fee. Hum, I was very disappointed. read more

What a fun place to just hang out and relax! Stopped by last week around midnight and it was still going strong...but I guess that's NY for you. An great mix of so many different demographics: suits in after work, hipsters, the Banana Republic crowd, a date night couple. There's definitely an authentic French Bistro feel to Bar Tabac that I enjoyed. The food was hearty, filling and reasonably-priced. I do wish they would've turned down the volume on the music just a bit, but otherwise, I recommend Bar Tabac. read more

They allow dogs in the outdoor seating area (thank goodness) and accept Amex or cash only. The mussels were really good, but the onion soup? The onion soup was killer. Just thinking about it now makes me wish I had a bowl of it. Nom nom nom. read more

Amazing place! Had such an awesome time with some good friends on Wednesday. The place is lively, such a great upbeat restaurant and staff. The manager was great and very hospitable! He was greeting and talking to everyone, I felt at home here. The live band played and such good music. Now the food, We had Foie Gras with Parsnip for an appetizer, it melted like butter, so delicious, so savory! I had the Seafood Bouillabaisse for the main course, omg, it was perfection. The seafood, scallops, shrimp, clams, mussels and vegetables were all cooked to perfection! My friends had rack of Lamb with ratatouille and some delicious watercress and Steak Frites and after 4 bottles of wine an Old Fashioned , Stella on draft and a bottle of Champagne we finally had dessert. Chocolate Cake x2 and Creme Brûlée x2. All and all, we had a blast and definitely will return. Completely recommend Bar Tabac! read more

Been wanting to try this place for awhile. We were seated outside next to a table of men who were smoking cigarettes (blowing directly at us). They also brought their own speaker and proceeded to loudly play hair metal. Best of all, we were never given menus, water, and no one came to take our order. I spent 10 years in the restaurant industry and there is no excuse. We left after 15 minutes of being ignored. read more

After researching for hours where to go to have great coq au vin and a great evening with my husband I decided to go to Bar Tabac. What a great decision! My husband's family is 1/2 French and so I've been lucky to experience the real deal.. This restaurant didn't disappoint. The flavors were authentic, the execution of the dishes was solid, and the atmosphere took me back to the great times I had in Paris. The service was great and I felt way more comfortable than in Balthazar's (which I love, but feel it's a little bit too much for a random occasion). read more

While the food was pretty good, it wasn't amazing and there isn't a $10 brunch-- coffee and bloody mary's are separate-- in my book a sin against brunch and all things good. BUT, what I really really didn't like was the incredibly BAD loud music playing things like "Ohh baby I love the way..." and possibly the worst musak-like cat stevens cover of 'wild world' ever. And the table are so close together that someone apologized for putting 'his arse in my face' and unfortunately, when leaving, I was forced to do the same to some unsuspecting customer. If I want ass in my face, I'll go to Manhattan, thank you very much. read more

Yes. Yes. Yes, please. I'm not always a huge fan of French food....but dude. Their sides are so good. And live music makes me feel classy. read more

Bar Tabac - French Near Me - Brooklyn, New York

Came here for dinner on a Wednesday and food was delish and for a relatively reasonable price considering the area of brooklyn. I had the trout almondine with haricot verts. The trout was good enough but the haricot verts were delish! Drinks were pretty good, well made and more than just the regular vodka soda. Staff was really nice and gave us free bday shots! Only real complaint was the size of the outside table we sat at- incredibly small, couldnt maintain order with entrees, drinks and bread basket read more

Bar Tabac - So very good. - French Near Me - Brooklyn, New York

A fine spot to grab a drink and listen to a cover band. Family-friendly, locals spot, no pretense.

Crowded - you definitely want a reservation if you're going to eat here, unless you don't mind waiting. Authentic - our waiter had a French accent. Ok, so maybe that's not the mark of authenticity, but it made me happy. Mussels and wine - can't go wrong with this selection. I got the mussels dijonnaise, and everyone at the table asked for extra bread so they could sop up the sauce. read more

Went here with the best friend for a hangover brunch and loved it. It's super cute inside (though cramped) and the staff is great. We sat at the bar because the wait for a table was ridiculous, but that was just fine as the bartender was really attentive. Food was not the best ever, but still tasty. We got the french onion soup, eggs bar tabac (runny eggs over a ratatouille/hash type deal), and eggs benedict with smoked salmon instead of ham. That salmon dish was amazing - definitely the best out of the dishes. Though the place is really small and doesn't provide much elbow room, I would definitely make it a point to at least go by for a snack on my next trip out east. it doesn't hurt that they all have French accents and will talk in French amongst themselves. *swoon* read more

This first review is only after having a few drinks there with friends. Being new to the neighborhood I'd never heard of this place but quickly found myself immersed in a classy french scene packed with smiles and fine smelling wines. I sampled the Gaillac as well as the Malbec and was happily full-filled with sweet aromas and distinct flavors. Had a few bites of the fries while I was on the bar which were nicely complimented with ketchup and mayo. But the real reason why I enjoyed my time here was the french trio of classical guitarist and fiddler accompanied by a beautiful, sprawling voice. Never caught there name (don't think its really important) but if you're ever sauntering down Smith st and catch a note flowing from this place be sure to swing through. As an added bonus they were filming How to Make it in America here the next afternoon. Also, I will have to add a review for the food next time. read more

Go for the burger. It's delicious. So is the Caesar salad. A little over priced for what they are but there is often really fantastic live music. Note: takeout is not as tasty as dining in and the portions seemed smaller. So just stay for dinner and chill. read more

I absolutely love this place in terms of the atmosphere, enthusiasm and vibe ... the reason I'm giving it four stars rather than five is the food is not absolutely great ... it's good, and some things are actually great (get the brochettes .... 5 for $25, delicious and also filling for two) but it's not the place you think about going when you want really amazing food. That being said, atmosphere many times takes precedence when the food is at least good and my mood is such .... this is one of those places. First of all, I love the fact that it has outdoor seating. We have a large dog and we can sit outside with him while we eat and sip from a bottle of wine .. always a plus when I can take him with us. For a while they stopped allowing this (I was VERY bummed) and suddenly you can bring them again, so I'm happy. Second of all they have live music several days a week. Sunday, Monday and Thursday nights and Sunday mornings. It's a variety of international music (reggae, french, flamenco, spanish) and it's always a great back drop to the meal (again, this is a place that's all about the atmosphere). It's rarely too loud (unless you're sitting right up front) and still within ear shot even if you're sitting outside or in the back. Third, the staff is great, the bartenders, managers, wait staff and even the musicians are so friendly and go out of there way to make sure you have great time ... If you haven't tried it yet, give it a whirl, I think you'll be happy you did. read more

I stopped in one random weekday for lunch after a little shopping, and was pleasantly, pleasantly surprised. Service was quick--I was seated immediately by the owner, the waitress came by with water and bread and took my order as soon as I was ready. I had the most perfect omelet and fries, with just the right bit of salad on the side, exactly how they do it in France (and the owner is French, I believe, which makes sense). I'd been missing France pretty badly when I found it, so the experience really made my whole week. I got the feeling that it would be a great weekend brunch place, and from reading the other reviews on here, it looks like I'll have to go back soon for it! If only I lived closer. It seems like a great local place that caters to regulars and random walk-ins (like myself) alike. Definitely will be back! read more

Grabbed a quick bite and drink here with friends. Veggie kabobs and baked clams. Of what we tried, food was nothing special. The inside reminded me of cafes in Italy. It's a bit tight inside, but I think that's part of the charm. Maybe it gets better for brunch or dinner. I hear there's often live music, which would add to the experience. I'd definitely be willing to come back to find out. read more

I went on a Monday evening for a meal by myself. There was a band that plays there every Monday night that was a nice addition to the atmosphere. The service might have been lacking but I'm also a sucker for anything French. However, the prices of the food definitely do not reflect the quality. It's not real French (or Parisian for that matter) cuisine. I will definitely go back, probably several more times just because I can sit and reminisce of when I would go to similar corner cafés in Paris. read more

The food, service and cocktails are casual and hearty with an elegant flare- as if you walked into this little bistro while strolling in Marmantre. Sipping your aperitif is only disrupted by people constantly squeezing past you. The restaurant is very narrow and one less table would give you some breathing room. read more

One of my favorite brunch places. Certainly worth the trip to Brooklyn (just off the F train.) Crowded, definitely not posh, but effortlessly chic. Same owner as "Jules" in the East Village, minus the pretentious customers. Can't beat the $10 brunch and free live jazz on weekends. Eggs Norvegienne are quite divine. They don't usually take reservations for small parties but the wait has never taken more than 10-15 mins. And whomever complained of kids - it's more the exception than the rule, you can ask to be seated in the back, and the jazz music will definitely cover any background noise. Budgeting note: alcoholic drinks can be quite pricey, even more than the brunch itself. Ideally, check the latest prices before ordering. read more

Had dinner here last night. Place was crowded and a bit chaotic, but we were told to grab a drink at the bar and wait outside and within the promised 30 minutes we were seated inside. The restaurant is homey and quaint even though it is chaotic. I was just disappointed that the food wasn't as nice as the surroundings. I ordered the burger which was overcooked. I might have sent it back had someone inquired if everything was alright. Nobody did. We were just thankful that after a long wait we were able to get bread and water. I don't mean to criticize the wait staff, they were all lovely, professional and great, including the bar tender. I think that the issue was that there weren't enough of them to satisfy the needs of the restaurant. Bottom line, if I go back, I will order something else, although nobody in my party seemed overly enthusiastic about any of the food we ordered. read more
