    Flan was eh

Overrated. Probably by enthused tourists. It's a cool little bar and restaurant but the food isn't very great. The cod is their popular dish and it was rubbery. The meatballs weren't very tasty. I like the blonde sandwich which essentially is a grilled ham and cheese. The flan was eh.

Fantastic tucked away restaurant with some authentic Spanish cuisine. The cod was melt in your mouth and the portions are huge.

We decided to try Bar Joan inside Mercat Santa Caterina. We almost passed by this restaurant and the menu was a little out of my comfort zone but the food was so delicious we ate here twice. Our first visit we enjoyed Fideua (a type of paella made with pasta), bread with roasted vegetables topped with anchovy, and grilled squid. To accompany our meal we enjoyed a simple 5 euro bottle of wine. Our favorite was the Fideua. This beautiful dish was delicious and did not have an overly seafood taste as many other paella dishes have had. On the 2nd occasion, we enjoyed a 3-course meal. My starter was a comforting bowl of chorizo and potato stew. My entree was tender steak (Argentinian style). My husband opted for the salad and pork shank which both looked very good. We ended up skipping dessert but the offerings looked lovely. This entire meal was under 15 Euros pp. Bar Joan is truly an amazing find!

Sat outside and had the Croquettes, Patatas bravas, and Chicken kebab. I wanted the garlic shrimp and meatballs but unfortunately they were sold out. Everything we had was good, the aioli and chicken had a curry seasoning which was nice.

Altamente recomendable.

    Cava, beer and tomato bread.

Awesome place. A must visit. Food is incredible. And you can't go wrong with a glass of cava at 10am.

The feta cheese was absolutely disgusting, it tasted like imitation rubber cheese. - The "Al Ajillo" Style Shrimps (GAMBES AMB ALLADA) had a very strange flavor within it, which overwhelmed the garlic flavors. - The Beef Tenderloin (FILET VEDELLA), she had to spit 1/4 of it out because it was too tough. - Everything was overpriced there for the value. If you are in the area DO NOT waste your time nor money dining here!!!

Thank goodness we had a reservation, otherwise the wait time for walk-ins was quoted to be 2-3 hours. We were seated at the counter, smack-dab in the middle of all the action. The drinks were just okay, but the tapas were great! We tried the anchovy dish, jamon, tomato toast, paella, padron peppers, spanish omelette, mussels, and finished with the crema catalana for dessert. All of the dishes were outstanding and they did not disappoint. Service was phenomenal and they were all very friendly and engaging with diners. They guided us on how many plates to order and stopped us from ordering too much, which I appreciate since we weren't sure how big each portion was. Would definitely come back if I had the chance!

Maybe in all of Spain. I could make a case for it to be THE BEST RESTURANT ON EARTH. (Except that title goes to Commanders Palace in New Orleans or Caviar Kaspia in Paris. But maybe not.) Great service. Great food. Great feeling place. Drawbacks? The neighborhood. The entrance to get in is AWFUL. The place is always too crowded and it can get very loud. It's about a 6 minute taxi ride from there. We were seated in the back room with the writing covering the walls. The front bar seemed a little livelier but we took what was offered. Husband had house red wine (3.50 euros) and I had sangria (4.50 euros). Good pours for both. We started with the red shrimp (gambillos) in a lemongrass sauce, about 6 shrimp for 15 euros. Then grilled octopus (which was very tender) over mash potatos and snap peas for 15 euros. We also had a side of grilled bread (4 pieces) for 3.5. We also ordered the Pepita beef with mash potato but took home for dinner as we were full (18 euros). We finished with the homemade corn ice cream with carmelized popcorn and raspberries, which was very unique at 6.5. We added our names to the wall to top off the meal. Service was quick and friendly.
