Ice and wood are sold on the premises
Monica S.

Since there are no reservations for this campground, I called and asked about the availability for tent camping during the first week in August. If you arrive around 10am, you are highly likely to get a tent spot. Here is everything I liked about this place: * Clean bathrooms with soap and paper towels * Showers cost 25¢ for 5 minutes (so luxurious) * Drinking Water from a spigot nearby * Dishwashing area with hot water * Guests observe the quiet hours * Pool is heated, clean, and large with fantastic views of the ocean * Trees provide lots of shade * Acadia National Park free shuttle stops at the campground * Mini store inside registration * Sells firewood and ice * Blueberry bushes next to pool, but beware of ticks after picking * 12pm checkout * Electric site, extra charge * Travelin' Lobster is 15 minutes away * ice cream and lobster rolls are sold across the street If plane flights are on sale, I would definitely camp here again.

Lot by the water

First of all, we got there super late and they were so kind to placed us in their overflow space. In the am they paced us in our lots and I was able to get about 6 spaces to fit my whole family. The camp is amazing, pet friendly and everyone is cordial. We will definitely go back. It's close to bar harbor and Acadia. We had such an amazing time.

We have camped here several times over 43 years. The owners are friendly. Bathrooms clean with 25 cent showers for 5 min which is plenty of time if you are organized. Sites are all pretty decent. Some are more prime with ocean and Mountain views. There are pits to burn firewood. Restaurants and grocery stores nearby. Most beautiful Acadia National Park just a few miles away. There are no reservations here so it's first come, first served. You drive around, pick your site, set up then go let the office know which spot is home sweet home for your duration. I recommend. Also there is a swimming pool and playground and they are good about maintaining the quiet hours.

Tent camped here in Oct. 2020 and loved it! Got a tent spot with a water view, it gets windy there so make sure you tie your tent and everything else down really good! Bathrooms and showers were clean and the campground is just a few miles from the Acadia Nat Park entrance.

Great customer service and beautiful campground! Several spots to choose from - ranging from no electric to full hookups. We showed up the Monday prior to Labor Day and there were several sites available - it got much more packed closer to Friday/Saturday. The showers are coin operated ($0.25 for 5 minutes), but they are HOT which was perfect during the cool evenings (do be careful and test it out before entering, though, because you could potentially boil lobster with how hot it gets). First come, first served, but worked well with our timing and flexibility.

Oceanfront tent only campsite when the weather wasn't so nice

Camped here for two nights over Columbus Day weekend this year after a campsite I'd booked previously turned out to be closed. This place does not take advance reservations. Instead, you have to go there and pick from the campsites that are available. This worked out very well for me since I was already in the area and in need of a place to stay, but if I was traveling a long way during a busy camping time, that might make me nervous. There were a lot of open campsites on Columbus Day weekend though. I picked an oceanfront tent site toward the back of the campground. It was very quiet and not too far to the restrooms. There are a lot of RV sites here as well. My tent site had no shade, but it being October, I didn't want any. I could see the water from my site! There are tent sites with more shade toward the front of the campground. Showers were 25cents for 5 minutes of hot water. The pool was closed in October. My campsite felt very exposed when one of the nights turned cold and rainy, but that's the site I picked. All around I was very pleased with my experience here.

I camp here every year. Can't beat the price. Nice choice of sites; wooded or open. Can be a little rowdy during the peak season.

Parking can be kind of tough at Acadia and Bar Harbor (more so Bar Harbor then Acadia), so it's a good option.

We stayed July 4th weekend and when we booked in January this was one of the last tent sites available. Granted it was July 4th, but still something to think about. There are a few lucky tent sites that overlook the water which would be incredible. Maybe next time we can book earlier and snag one. Each site has everything you will need -- a platform for your tent (perfect incase it rains), an electrical outlet, running water, a picnic table and a firepit. It is clean and well-kept, and you are never too far from a bathroom / shower facility. Just note that the shower is $1 for 5 minutes and you'll need quarters. There is a main house where you can buy wood and other supplies. During non-covid times they also have a gathering place where you can buy snacks. I believe the rate is around $50 dollars a night but I'm not sure if the rate changes depending on the weekend, and I wouldn't be surprised if it was higher than normal over July 4th. This is a wonderful campsite and I'd happily return. In comparison, I've also camped at the Oceanside KOA in Bar Harbor and this campsite is way better. Be sure to check it out!

Stayed here labor day weekend 2025, and to say its was a complete and utter disappointment would be…read morean understatement. For years my wife has wanted to stay at this campground and when we finally made it happen it was such a disappointment. We booked our stay in March 2025, and reserved an ocean front back in site water electric. We arrive and they have is in a pull through across from the Ocean Front site we booked water and electric. My wife called the office to see if a mistake was make and Brenda at the office implied that my wife had no idea what she had reserved even though we had an email confirmation showing we had reserved an ocean front site. Brenda then completely dismissed my wife saying well we don't have any available anyway. There was no attempt to make this right whatsoever. We understand booking issues arise but for no communication prior to our arrival of the change was frustrating especially since we would have chosen a full hookup site had we been informed of the unavailability of an ocean front site. Our site was incredibly unleveled causing us to be unable to use the main entrance to our camper requiring our guests to walk through our bedroom to gain access to the bathroom and living room of our camper. We had emailed the campground about the experience as their handout requested to contact them before writing a bad review. Well it's over two weeks later and no one has responded to my wife's email. I would strongly recommend you skip this KOA they certainly do not care about your experience just your money!

Folks, I don't really know what to say other than 'you just gotta come here!'…read moreI love this place! I came through on a hum last year, stayed for 2 nights and 3 days. Told Shirley (the owner) I would be back "next year" to help out, and here I am, Aug. 8th, 2019, sad to leave after spending 4 weeks in the grand teepee, helping out around the camp. Off route 1, into the woods, to grandmama's RV we go! But it is so much more... tent sites, group sites, great trails, and great vibe from the surrounding community. But what you really want to know is; this is a great base for exploring coastal Maine & Downeast. Now understand 2 things... Downeast is on the coast, but when the term 'downeast' is used, it is very much a reference to the culture of the folk who grew up and live here and have also known it through the generations of their family. Once you get here, you're in the thick of what "coastal Maine" really is without the crowds of Bar Harbor, Acadia National Park, etc.. from Cottonwood you will find within 20 mins. Never crowded beaches with all the beauty of those other places... and you can also make a day trip of getting to Easport or Calaise and just breath in New Brunswick! Oh yeah, bring your passport... One of the other things I love about camping here, are the various small sites that are suitable for bicyclers and bikers who travel with minimal gear and need to stop for short stays. Even though its right off the road, once in, you're cast into the woods! Oh yeah, and I can't think of another camp with such a great bath house along this route... Cottonwood Camping is truly a great experience and my pick as a base for exploring Downeast, Coastal Maine, the far north on the east side of the U.S. Shirley Cotton makes it happen! She is the BOMB!!

I can honestly say this place was easy to find and very photogenic. Easy to recommend.read more

Reserving this campground is tricky. Exactly 60 days in advance of your desired trip, you must be…read moreon recreation.gov at 6am (if you're in CA) and have in mind a handful of spots that you'd like to park your tent. In fact, it's a good idea to check online which spots might potentially be available a few days before you actually book. If you make a mistake while reserving, may the good Lord have mercy on you because corrections are more difficult than the reservation itself. Camping in Blackwoods is pleasant, clean, spacious, has respectful guests, and plenty of trees to tie up a canopy to protect from the sudden rain showers. With much to like, there's quite a bit of inconvenience. Having no showers on the premises is my biggest gripe. After hiking for most of the day, there's no getting around needing a shower. If you drive (that's right, drive) down the road a little ways outside the campground, there's a place that sells showers for $3 in quarters (that's 12 quarters) for 4 minutes. Apparently, you can obtain 12 quarters with a credit card, but reviewers warned that sometimes the machine is out of order so BYOQ. While Blackwoods asks that you only bring local wood for campfires (within a 50 mile radius), our party found the local firewood (which can be purchased at the shower place or across the street from the shower place) too wet from the frequent showers. Thus, making a campfire was challenging and frustrating even for our resident Eagle Scout. Undeniably, the restrooms are clean, but I found myself without toilet paper in some of the stalls. Luckily, a friend was able to hand me some TP. Speaking of paper, there are no hand towels or soap in the bathroom; however, I did see one outlet in the bathroom that some were using to charge their phones. Another inconvenience is that there is no dishwash station. In fact, not only do you wash your dishes at your camping site by walking to the spigot to get water (make your own hot water), but you have to walk to a different and farther station to dump your dishwater out so as to not clog the pipes with food. When it comes to dishwashing, there's a lot of walking back and forth. Get your 2 buckets. Get some water for washing and another for rinsing. Walk back to camp site. Heat up the water. Wash your dishes. Rinse your dishes. Walk to wash water disposal. Walk back to camp site. For entertainment, the amphitheater had nightly presentations. On one occasion, we attended one on animals in the park, but at the first sound of thunder, the ranger called it and we all had to go back to our camp sites. Surprisingly, our campground and Acadia NP in general was bereft of animals. Living in the suburbs of CA, one can see more wildlife than in Acadia NP. Before arriving at the NP, I had full intentions of using the free shuttles, but the shuttle schedules and transfers could cost you hours of time so we opted to drive our own car and brave the limited parking. Camping successfully at Blackwoods requires grit and determination. If you got it, go for it.

Acadia National Park is one of those places that genuinely lives up to everything said about it,…read moreand it stands apart from the big western parks in a way that makes it its own distinct experience. I found the combination of rocky coastline, dense evergreen forests, and mountain summits accessible within a relatively compact area meant there was always something worth stopping for. The scenery shifted constantly as I moved through the park, and keeping a camera within reach at all times was not an exaggeration. Cadillac Mountain is the natural anchor of my visit. The drive to the summit is worth doing on its own, but I chose to hike the Gorge Trail leading up to it on foot. It was a serious undertaking that included real rock climbing sections and rewarded me with views that felt genuinely earned. I budgeted a full half day for the hike rather than driving. The summit itself has a gift shop, and the views from the top looked out in every direction with nothing obstructing them. A reservation for the Cadillac summit road costs a few dollars and needs to be booked online in advance, so I handled that before I arrived. The Beehive Trail is another strong option for hikers who want something with more exposure and elevation gain than a standard walk. I also built Sand Beach and Thunder Hole into my loop drive, and the carriage roads offered a different pace entirely, peaceful and scenic with no vehicle traffic to contend with, making them ideal for biking if I had access to wheels. Parking was a genuine challenge during peak season and on weekends in particular. Arriving early in the morning was the only reliable way to secure a spot at the popular stops without waiting an hour or more. A late fall visit would hit a sweet spot where crowds thin out considerably, the air is crisp, and the park takes on a quieter quality that peak season cannot offer. I made sure to buy my park pass at the visitor center and did my research on seasonal hours before I went, as services and shuttles wind down toward the end of October.
