It doesn't have 50 amp service nor sewer hookup. However, when you're mins from the entrance of Acadia NP and you have THE most gorgeous views, does that even matter? They also had live entertainment and beer tasting at the pavilion and a small "shack" that serves fresh lobster and ice cream sandwiches every night. Could you ask for anything more?

The view from our KOA on a clear day. What a view!!'

The view was stunning! We lucked out and were here when it wasn't foggy. It was super foggy the day we left. The site is spacious. The staff is extremely friendly and helpful. The people are lovely to talk to. The only issue for me is this KOA is like 1200 miles from my house. Guess that means we have to come back ;)

    amazing views of the sunset.

Great day at KOA stands true at this location. What a wonderful place! Clean and well maintained. This is a perfect place to park your rig while enjoying the area. Pull-through sites are spacious enough to get in and out easily. They also have little cabins to rent if you don't have a RV. They have lots of dog pick up stations around and a nice dog play/run area. Large playground for the kiddos. The Red Lobster Airstream houses a little place to get some food...depends on day to what is available. I can't wait to come back and stay here again!

Nice campground! Friendly staff! Right on the bay! Amazing sunsets right from the campground! Highly recommend!

We aren't the KOA type of campers, but given the beginning of the season and the late planning, we had no choice. Pros: 1. Clean facilities. 2. Decent store (doesn't open until 8am--kind of late for campers). 3. They escort you to your tent site. 4. Each tent site has a cleared-out fire pit and a picnic table. 5. Sensored lights that come on in the dark on the walk to the bathroom at night. Cons: 1. LOUD road behind tent sites. 2. No privacy. 3. A long walk to the bathroom from tent sites. 4. Only 2 shower stalls, although this could be a pro because they were more private than the camp sites. By escorting you to your tent site, they lead you to believe that the road is a private road. Turns out--it's not! We figured this out from the busses and cars flying by our tent site. I don't know much about people who use RV's, but after taking a trip to the bathroom (it's next to the RV section), I noticed there were hundreds of them packed in like sardines. Again, not sure if this is normal, but it didn't look like they had much privacy. Security does drive-bys a few times during the night. KOA got the job done, but it wasn't very conducive to my style of sleeping/camping.

Had a great time here. Super Friendly staff, very clean camp grounds and phenomenal Oceanside view. Highly recommend.

This campground is nice and clean. We had a beautiful site right on the river/bay. We only stayed one night. We accumulated about a half a bag of trash. The next morning when we entered the dump station there is a large dumpster which I assumed was for trash. There was no sign that I saw stating otherwise. I threw our bag of trash in said dumpster. As I reentered my vehicle, an employee cam flying around our van in a golf cart and scolded us for throwing our trash in the dumpster. He said it was for ash and debris from the fire rings. He acted like he wanted me to go in after it even though he said I didn't have to after I asked. If it's not for trash, make a sign saying so. If there is a sign, make it bigger so people can see it.

Never seen one more glorious!! Step away from our KOA RV site.

What a special place! We've traveled The best spots of 32 states now and this KOA is second only to our visit to the Olympic Peninsula. We got the best campsite for our needs with trees over us and secluding our slide-out side while giving gorgeous ocean view from our awning side. And the sunsets are breathtaking! Children and young at heart enjoy exploring the coast with tide pools steps from our door. We didn't have sewer hook up but they have a honeypot service. Water pressure is a little low at times but never posed an inconvenience. Adventures of every sort within short enough drives that we could come back and forth for our dog's needs. Acadia's sights, Bar Harbor or my favorite the Southwest Harbor area. I sure hope we can return soon!

Looking for a place to camp near Bar Harbor? This KOA has beautiful views, wonderful amenities, and great activities - especially for kids. But what makes this place stand out is the friendly and helpful staff that works here. Thanks for making our Maine vacation so memorable.

Loved the views and wished we could have stayed longer. The campground has a resort feel where they friendly greet in the store and escort you to your campsite. Delivering wood and ice is greatly appreciated. Nice bathrooms and showers. I'm glad that I booked an oceanfront site, the experience is completely different compared to being in a woods site. Beautiful sunset. It was pricey but worth it for the views. The site next to us was open one night, which made it even nicer.

Great location! No joke, it's right on the ocean. You have direct access and can even swim in it a bit as the water isn't too deep or cold. In fact it's actually much warmer here than on some of the beaches in Acadia Park. Super clean showers, with nice warm water and a local radio station playing in the mornings. Beautiful sunsets too. Our spot was a little pricey for a campground, over $90 but considering the location of the park and the season not unreasonable. Staff is very friendly and helpful, they go out of their way to help even with small issues.

We stayed at this KOA for 2.5 weeks early this month. I generally like KOA's not because it's a great "outdoors" experience, but because it's kind of like McDonald's - they are predictable: you pretty much know what to expect. Sometimes we aren't as interested in the outdoor experience as we are having a clean, safe and secure place to park our camper while we spend all day every day sightseeing and hiking. OCEANSIDE KOA in Bar Harbor, ME was all that and more. Although it was just my husband and I, we did note a bunch of family/kid oriented experiences including a kiddie train ride. There is a lobster shack and ice cream stand in the premises, neither of which did we try, but I hear the lobster in particular is very good. We didn't use the bathroom facilities, so can't comment there. We did use the laundry room and found it clean and adequate. The front desk has more quarters if you need them. We paid extra for an "ocean side" spot (and so no sewer hookup) but I have a little trouble with that definition for a lot of the spots. It's more "tidal pool side." Some are much better than others: waterside and very wooded, some in a direct visual line for drop dead gorgeous sunsets - we just walked down the road to enjoy them. Ours was treeless, small and faced a tidal pool. I really wish you could pick your own spot at KOA's. I loved the location. It's at the top of Mt. Desert Island: Acadia National Park and the town of Bar Harbor were about a 20 minute drive. Additionally the towns of Trenton and the farther and larger, Ellsworth were right across the bridge - groceries, laundry, urgent care, all the stuff you need (except a Verizon store). Additionally the Island Explorer bus will pick you up right at the camp and take you all over the island for free! Mostly I want to heap accolades on the manager and staff of the park. The night before we were to leave, my husband slipped and fell while hiking and broke his left hand and required surgery (SO HAPPY with Mount Desert Island hospital and Northern Lights Medical Center in Bangor - but I digress). This was post Indigenous People's Day and the island and campground were trying to close up for the season. I found another campground in Trenton but talked to the KOA office to clarify which day we would actually have to move. They could not have been nicer and offered up immediately that we could stay until the services would be cut off, even though they were technically closed - I didn't even have to ask. We appreciated this extension of themselves so much - it saved us a bunch of time and energy and stress while we traveled to the hand surgeon and subsequently to the hospital for surgery. It was just a darn nice thing to do, and I guess the KOA difference! We would definitely, wholeheartedly stay there again. BTW: This was our first trip to Maine - I could write for 20 more pages about the beauty and splendor of this beautiful state. We hit peak leaf color and enjoyed every aspect of the coast from Portsmouth to Lubec. Don't hesitate to go!

We stayed July 4th weekend and when we booked in January this was one of the last tent sites available. Granted it was July 4th, but still something to think about. There are a few lucky tent sites that overlook the water which would be incredible. Maybe next time we can book earlier and snag one. Each site has everything you will need -- a platform for your tent (perfect incase it rains), an electrical outlet, running water, a picnic table and a firepit. It is clean and well-kept, and you are never too far from a bathroom / shower facility. Just note that the shower is $1 for 5 minutes and you'll need quarters. There is a main house where you can buy wood and other supplies. During non-covid times they also have a gathering place where you can buy snacks. I believe the rate is around $50 dollars a night but I'm not sure if the rate changes depending on the weekend, and I wouldn't be surprised if it was higher than normal over July 4th. This is a wonderful campsite and I'd happily return. In comparison, I've also camped at the Oceanside KOA in Bar Harbor and this campsite is way better. Be sure to check it out!

Tried it under new corporate run in 2025 for first time & had to pre-select our site but then with the old system, once you were on your site, it was yours. You pulled in and chose whatever open available site & then went to the office to register. Now you also have to choose ahead of time how many days. With this being said we wanted to stay an extra night. But, now we had to pack everything up & move the RV to another site (of their choice) for just 1 extra night because someone was coming in for the site we were already on for the past 5 days,... It was a last minute booking and the campgrounds in Acadia were all booked out for the nights I wanted. Happened to find this spot, and it was a great decision. The bathrooms are very very clean. They have hot and cold water sinks, paper towels, flush toilets, and outlets. They are individual rooms. There is also wifi in some spots of the campground, there is laundry available. I didn't shower at this campground, but there are also quarter operated showers. I think it 50 cents for 7 mins. I could be wrong though. There water spots where you can wash your dishes too. They ask you don't do it in the bathroom. The camp store/ front office also seemed to have a lot of amenities too and they do sell ice if you need it. There is also a free bus that picks up at the campground and goes to Acadia and also Bar Harbor. Parking can be kind of tough at Acadia and Bar Harbor (more so Bar Harbor then Acadia), so it's a good option. The only downside is the tent campsites felt awfully close to each other. Plenty of shade in the tent campsites, but not a lot of privacy besides behind your car which you'll park in front of your tent campsite. I would definitely stay here again purely because the bathrooms were so clean and felt new.

Told Shirley (the owner) I would be back "next year" to help out, and here I am, Aug. 8th, 2019, sad to leave after spending 4 weeks in the grand teepee, helping out around the camp. Off route 1, into the woods, to grandmama's RV we go! But it is so much more... tent sites, group sites, great trails, and great vibe from the surrounding community. But what you really want to know is; this is a great base for exploring coastal Maine & Downeast. Now understand 2 things... Downeast is on the coast, but when the term 'downeast' is used, it is very much a reference to the culture of the folk who grew up and live here and have also known it through the generations of their family. Once you get here, you're in the thick of what "coastal Maine" really is without the crowds of Bar Harbor, Acadia National Park, etc.. from Cottonwood you will find within 20 mins. Never crowded beaches with all the beauty of those other places... and you can also make a day trip of getting to Easport or Calaise and just breath in New Brunswick! Oh yeah, bring your passport... One of the other things I love about camping here, are the various small sites that are suitable for bicyclers and bikers who travel with minimal gear and need to stop for short stays. Even though its right off the road, once in, you're cast into the woods! Oh yeah, and I can't think of another camp with such a great bath house along this route... Cottonwood Camping is truly a great experience and my pick as a base for exploring Downeast, Coastal Maine, the far north on the east side of the U.S. Shirley Cotton makes it happen! She is the BOMB!!

Reserving this campground is tricky. Exactly 60 days in advance of your desired trip, you must be…read moreon recreation.gov at 6am (if you're in CA) and have in mind a handful of spots that you'd like to park your tent. In fact, it's a good idea to check online which spots might potentially be available a few days before you actually book. If you make a mistake while reserving, may the good Lord have mercy on you because corrections are more difficult than the reservation itself. Camping in Blackwoods is pleasant, clean, spacious, has respectful guests, and plenty of trees to tie up a canopy to protect from the sudden rain showers. With much to like, there's quite a bit of inconvenience. Having no showers on the premises is my biggest gripe. After hiking for most of the day, there's no getting around needing a shower. If you drive (that's right, drive) down the road a little ways outside the campground, there's a place that sells showers for $3 in quarters (that's 12 quarters) for 4 minutes. Apparently, you can obtain 12 quarters with a credit card, but reviewers warned that sometimes the machine is out of order so BYOQ. While Blackwoods asks that you only bring local wood for campfires (within a 50 mile radius), our party found the local firewood (which can be purchased at the shower place or across the street from the shower place) too wet from the frequent showers. Thus, making a campfire was challenging and frustrating even for our resident Eagle Scout. Undeniably, the restrooms are clean, but I found myself without toilet paper in some of the stalls. Luckily, a friend was able to hand me some TP. Speaking of paper, there are no hand towels or soap in the bathroom; however, I did see one outlet in the bathroom that some were using to charge their phones. Another inconvenience is that there is no dishwash station. In fact, not only do you wash your dishes at your camping site by walking to the spigot to get water (make your own hot water), but you have to walk to a different and farther station to dump your dishwater out so as to not clog the pipes with food. When it comes to dishwashing, there's a lot of walking back and forth. Get your 2 buckets. Get some water for washing and another for rinsing. Walk back to camp site. Heat up the water. Wash your dishes. Rinse your dishes. Walk to wash water disposal. Walk back to camp site. For entertainment, the amphitheater had nightly presentations. On one occasion, we attended one on animals in the park, but at the first sound of thunder, the ranger called it and we all had to go back to our camp sites. Surprisingly, our campground and Acadia NP in general was bereft of animals. Living in the suburbs of CA, one can see more wildlife than in Acadia NP. Before arriving at the NP, I had full intentions of using the free shuttles, but the shuttle schedules and transfers could cost you hours of time so we opted to drive our own car and brave the limited parking. Camping successfully at Blackwoods requires grit and determination. If you got it, go for it.

I found the combination of rocky coastline, dense evergreen forests, and mountain summits accessible within a relatively compact area meant there was always something worth stopping for. The scenery shifted constantly as I moved through the park, and keeping a camera within reach at all times was not an exaggeration. Cadillac Mountain is the natural anchor of my visit. The drive to the summit is worth doing on its own, but I chose to hike the Gorge Trail leading up to it on foot. It was a serious undertaking that included real rock climbing sections and rewarded me with views that felt genuinely earned. I budgeted a full half day for the hike rather than driving. The summit itself has a gift shop, and the views from the top looked out in every direction with nothing obstructing them. A reservation for the Cadillac summit road costs a few dollars and needs to be booked online in advance, so I handled that before I arrived. The Beehive Trail is another strong option for hikers who want something with more exposure and elevation gain than a standard walk. I also built Sand Beach and Thunder Hole into my loop drive, and the carriage roads offered a different pace entirely, peaceful and scenic with no vehicle traffic to contend with, making them ideal for biking if I had access to wheels. Parking was a genuine challenge during peak season and on weekends in particular. Arriving early in the morning was the only reliable way to secure a spot at the popular stops without waiting an hour or more. A late fall visit would hit a sweet spot where crowds thin out considerably, the air is crisp, and the park takes on a quieter quality that peak season cannot offer. I made sure to buy my park pass at the visitor center and did my research on seasonal hours before I went, as services and shuttles wind down toward the end of October.
