This place has gotten SCARY and creepy!! Let me start by saying that I personally have been camping here since 1988, and my family longer. Someone who looked homeless came unannounced into my campsite at 1030 pm!, when my kids were asleep in the tent. When I asked why they didn't announce themselves they got offended and gave me a really hard time, getting very upset with me, even after simply explaining why I was uncomfortable. This happened 2 different nights. After this they then called my wife while we were on a hike very upset with me for questioning why their staff members came into out site 2 different nights unannounced. I thought, in reality, if I pay $500 for a few nights in the woods I had the right, as a customer, to ask simply why they kept coming into my campsite; but apparently I was wrong when it came to this campground. If you like paying tons of money for campsites to have staff come into your site to bother you in the late hours of the night this is the campground for you. read more

This is an excellent campsite and it's right in the heart of Acadia which can't be beat. Important to note that it's tough to snag a reservation during peak season. We stayed July 4th weekend and when we booked in January this was one of the last tent sites available. Granted it was July 4th, but still something to think about. There are a few lucky tent sites that overlook the water which would be incredible. Maybe next time we can book earlier and snag one. Each site has everything you will need -- a platform for your tent (perfect incase it rains), an electrical outlet, running water, a picnic table and a firepit. It is clean and well-kept, and you are never too far from a bathroom / shower facility. Just note that the shower is $1 for 5 minutes and you'll need quarters. There is a main house where you can buy wood and other supplies. During non-covid times they also have a gathering place where you can buy snacks. I believe the rate is around $50 dollars a night but I'm not sure if the rate changes depending on the weekend, and I wouldn't be surprised if it was higher than normal over July 4th. This is a wonderful campsite and I'd happily return. In comparison, I've also camped at the Oceanside KOA in Bar Harbor and this campsite is way better. Be sure to check it out! read more

Although the sites vary, and are priced accordingly, the grounds are well kept, and the common buildings are either new or renovated. Neat and clean bathrooms, just remember to bring quarters for the shower, which is no big deal as other Acadia camp grounds also use pay showers. Staff is friendly and be sure to check your bill before leaving (everything is charged to your site and you pay when leaving with an emailed receipt, so wait a minute at check-out for the receipt to show up on your phone to be sure the bill is correct before hitting the road). Strikingly beautiful campground. It is right on the coast of Somes Sound with many sites right on the water. The sites themselves are wooded and well spaced from each other. The facilities are fabulous. Loved the Gathering Place for a morning coffee and fresh baked goods. (We also pick up firewood and ice there each day.) First time visit to Mt Desert Campground and highly impressed. I was solo tenting. My site was among the last available (ie far from their best) and was still very pleasant, large, and clean, with an even mix of sun and shade and a large wooden tent platform. Bathroom and shower were a short walk. All bathrooms/showers appeared newly rebuilt and well maintained. Staff at the office and the campground rangers were friendly and helpful. The campground was full but still quiet and peaceful. My only knock on the place is that it's hard to navigate the maze of one-way (and un-named) campground roads. If you're going out for a walk, bring your campground map! All in all a very nice place. read more

Excellent campground! They are perfection for "glamping"! Located just minutes away from Acadia and bar harbor along somes sound! Excellent location for touring all of mount desert island! Even a short distance to the quietside - southwest harbor and down to bass harbor. Campground is well maintained! Clean showers (bring quarters), bathrooms, campsites. Well wooded area! Excellent views of sound from some campsites! You can rent canoes and kayaks and take them out on the sound which we greatly enjoyed - eagles and osprey will be seen - island in sound is a nesting ground you can see the signs for along the kayaking area. The island hopper bus also picks up from this location! WiFi available! Overall I have stayed here 3 times and each has been very pleasant experiences and will be back! read more

We love this campsite. We have been to many campgrounds where we experienced over-crowdedness, unruly inconsiderate campers who blasts music at all hours of the day and dirty bathrooms. Mount Desert Campground is by far, the best run campsite we have been to. The staff are professional yet friendly. Each campsite is well-marked, very clean, some some with wooden platforms. The campsites also have sufficient distance between them so it doesn't feel too crowded (unlike some KOA campgrounds). The bathrooms have hot water showers, and are well-lit and clean. I think this campground attracts a nice crowd where people are generally considerate and friendly. I like that they have repeat campers who have priority to book the same campsites. I look forward to many more years of camping at Mount Desert Campground. read more

We just stayed here (mid July 2009) sites are close together as Fletch said. AVOID AT ALL COST sites A30 & A31. Very rocky and uneven, they have plaforms for your tents, but you can't move without hitting a tree stump, root or rock. Very unsafe sites. Service was fair front desk person must have been new since she seemed overwhelmed, check out was slow and cumbersome. The other thing that was annoying was the showers, $1 for 5 minutes of sometimes hot water. It kept cycling back and forth between cold and hot during the 5 minutes. My second time camping in a week. Have to say I wouldn't go back. You had to pay for showers and they were timed. $1 for 5 min. Needed more time? Rinse and repeat. The front desk wasn't great. I needed some products (female) and she kept asking what I needed. That's not your business. Nearest grocery store was 15 min away and wasn't easy to get to. We were kind of too close to our neighbors. Weather didn't help. read more

A beautiful campground surrounded by an even more beautiful landscape. The waterfront sites are obviously the ones you want but truthfully I don't think I saw a "bad" site anywhere. Note: This is Not the campground you want to go to with a large group of friends and stay up late drinking by the fire. My perception is that is a big no-no here. Quiet hours are clearly abided by; 10pm came and you could practically hear all the fires go out and everyone zip up their tents for the night. I think the campground is ideal for couples or smaller families, definitely not loud groups. Staff live throughout the campground and patrol constantly on golf carts. The bathrooms were immaculate and you can tell they take pride in the cleanliness of the campground as a whole. We had site C29 which was across from the boat ramp so technically we had a "waterfront site" but we also had easier water access than some other sites I noticed. Many of the waterfront sites are located on the edge of small rocky cliffs, you can walk into the water but if you had a kayak or something it may be tricky getting them down in the water (or maybe that was just at low tide?). Next time we come back I'm aiming for site A21 or any of the C waterfront sites, those were the best in my opinion. read more

Very nice campground situated at the top of Somes Sound. Great central location only a few minutes from most of Acadia and less than 15-minutes from Bar Harbor. Check-in process was fast and the staff was super helpful. We booked a site not too long before our trip and were pleased with what we got. All sites seemed to be a decent size with a fair amount of foliage for privacy. There was a wooden plot on each site for for a tent (they provide nails to set it), a picnic table and fire pit. Restrooms were very clean with flush toilets and warm coin-operated showers ($1 for 5 minutes). The restroom we utilized had both a toilet and a shower. However, some people would lock the main door which was annoying when they were only using one part of the space. read more

I loved my experience staying at Mount Desert Campground. The staff at Mount Desert Campground is super friendly, helpful, and you can tell they love their jobs. Our site was A24, which was inland, so if I would do it differently I would grab a spot closer to the water maybe, but still private, quiet, and clean space, despite the countless families also camping. Short walk to the restrooms. Bring quarters! Cold showers are free but four quarters will give you 5 min of hot water(just a tip: Keeping them in plastic film canisters in each of your shower caddies will help a LOT). I recharge and get healing properties from showering.... so i took my time with a leisurely shower therapy session of about 15 minutes but it's possible to go for shorter if you are a normal person lol Our site had running water and electricity making our camping experience super pleasant, but some of the sites don't, which I would suggest if you choose to "rough it". We cooked and ate almost every meal on site too, which was nice by the campfire..We were quite fond of the tee pee method...Anyway for your convenience they sell bundles of firewood, kindling(the thinner slivers of wood finely chopped for starting the fire) and ice. The Gathering Place is a great space where in the mornings, breakfast is served(apple cider donuts and coffee but only dairy milk, so bring your stash of nut milk from your camp if you should be a vegan or have a dairy allergy) and in the evening they sell ice cream. The Gathering Place has free Wifi, .....adorable red rocking chairs...., and decent cell service so that was AWESOME when we were planning the activities on our adventures. There is also an endless amount of board games and books to keep kids busy between the hiking, kayaking, canoeing, etc! Speaking of hiking, kayaking, etc: 1. Beehive Cliffs Trail & The Bowl Trail. Opt for the [450 ft elevation] peak that overlooks Sand Beach and looks like a Hawaiian landscape from the Northeast(If you squint a little) and make it one of the highlights of your trip... I wasn't dressed for the occasion but I saw people taking a dip in the Bowl 2. Jordan pond -rent a bike or bring one from home and explore carriage roads!! 3. Cadillac Mountain. Not so much of a hike, it was suggested that it was more a spectacle to view that will surely take your breath away. There is plenty of parking so we drove and so did a lot of other people there. We caught it during overcast and it was still amazing.. Definitely shoot for a sunrise or sunset if you can! There is a cute gift shop here too. You don't necessarily have to go in there and buy everything in sight but if you were wondering, the author of this yelp review did and is now very broke, but everyone back home gets to enjoy a little piece of Maine :-P 4. Bar Island! This was fun to see. You can take the trail during low tide only, so I urge you to find out when that is and give yourself enough time to get down there(Wear comfortable shoes- You have been warned!!) 5. Bass Harbor Lighthouse. Still actively operated by the US Coast Guard, who lives there with their family so be mindful of that and be polite. There is a nice trail to wonder off onto... Check Pinterest for pictures if you need some persuasion! :-) 6. Canoeing! We rented a canoe from Mount Desert Campground, since they have rentals conveniently on site. The girl behind the counter takes payment, and hands you paddles and jackets. We walked out to the path to the entryway between two campsites and found a hidden stair/ramp. Below the stair and ramp is a finger dock where you will find all the kayaks and canoes, "MDC" is marked on what we could take out. I would recommend going out for the full 8 hours and bringing a water tight container with cameras and snacks for a proper trip. Be sure to go to Acadia Visitor center, get ideas from the rangers, and step up your game and opt for a waterproof map. Also just a warning, the bathrooms next to the Gathering Place is a shared bathroom, so don't make the mistake I did and leave all your belongings and clothes sprawled out all over the place and freak out when someone comes in.... This bathroom may have one single toilet stall, a vanity mirror, 1 single shower so it is misleading! you have been warned so you don't find out in complete terror like me lol My experience was made memorable exclusively because of the accommodation of Mount Desert Campground and the sweethearts working there. If you are looking to tent-style camp at a simple, clean, safe campground which is close to everything Mt. Desert Island has to offer, this is the place! We stayed here for a few days before Labor Day weekend. Fairly large campground, perfect location, less than a ten minute drive from everything! You could actually bike to Acadia park, but those Maine-iacs drive over 50 mph on the state roads, so be careful! This is a prime spot if you want to save some cash, play in Acadia in the am, hang out in Bar Harbor in the afternoon...have S'mores for dinner.....it's SO easy. They offer platforms and fire pits at each tent site. Some sites are near the water. There are CLEAN restroom and shower facilities peppered at strategic locations all over the campground. The showers were 5 min. of hot water for $1.... The sites are a little close together, this is NOT deep woods camping people....but if you plan ahead and make a reservation (which is a must BTW) you could obtain a sweet semi-secluded site...just ask. They have kayaks and canoes for rent....also highly recommended. One minus....they have a very strict cancellation policy...bottom line is if you need to cancel, expect to forteit your entire deposit. read more

Good choice for camping on MDI. It is centrally located so you can easily get to either side of the island. I would call this a high end campground (prices were high compared to others) but you get alot for your money. 1. This campground is right on the Somes Sound which means you can see the water from some of the campsites and you can launch boats and kayaks without leaving the campground. Also, there is a floating dock where kids can fish for crabs - all of the kids seemed to love it! On water campsites are more expensive - if you are going to rent one of these be sure to check the site out first....our perspective was the early A sites on the water wouldn't be ideal because everyone drives through that section to get to the other campsites...also the ones on the water right next to the dock or boat launch would not be ideal...people constantly walking by... 2. They have hot showers on the premises. It is $1 for 5 minutes and it takes about a minute to get hot...so I spent $2-$3 each time... Better than having to go off campground for the shower. Other: - All sites have firepits with grates attached - You pretty much have to drive wherever you want to go...wouldn't bike on the 50 MPH road... :( -General store open 7-10 am and 6-9 pm - No refunds for any reason - $42 per night off water, with tent platform read more

I did more hiking than hanging at the campsite, but zero complaints about the campground. Some of the cleanest bathrooms I've seen, though the one by the Gathering Place appeared close to brand new. There's limited cellphone service, but who cares? A lot of good spots right on the water, but any of the sites work. I had a cheap, small one and it was still excluded and private. $1 per 5 minutes of shower time is tough, but that's most places on the island. read more

After three family trips here, we won't even consider other options for tent camping on Mt Desert Island. I'm now booking a 5 week stay, I love it that much. We consider ourselves campground snobs, with very high expectations. Mt Desert Campground offers: 1) Great central location 2) Very nice tent sites 3) Clean, nice bathrooms 4) Ask for a quiet site off of the main traffic roads. 5) It's tents and small trailers only, so it's all wooded and very natural. 6) Family owned, with friendly caretakers that live in the campground. There is a personal pride that really comes through here. Everything is well run and family friendly, without a bossy dictator enforcing rules. The only downside is a lack of mobile phone service here, but you can make skype calls with the free wi-fi at the Gathering Place. Because I do "working" vacations, I'd love for them to extent the wi-fi to the whole campground. That would help mitigate the mobile phone void problem. read more

We will never camp anywhere else in the Northeast. We have been to MDC 4 times over the years with our kids and friends. The attention to detail, the cleanliness, the strictly observed quiet hours, the landscaping/setting - compare to no other campgrounds we've been to. The thought of dealing with rowdy, gas-grill-toting campers is very unappealing to us. We have dealt with patient office staff who have helped us choose a site - and we are very finicky and high maintenance. We love that their store keeps it to fresh pastries, coffee and ice cream, and doesn't sell Jiffy Pop. The bathrooms and sites are immaculate. Just wish it weren't soooo far away and that I could have a tempurpedic mattress in my tent. Quality experience, the Four Seasons of camping! read more

We drove through the campground and were amazed at how clean it was, and the sites on the water are beautiful! I've camped at this campground at two separate times, and both times were great! I like the water sites, but I noticed that there are very few bad camp sites here. Even the regular ones are nice! I always get a platform tent site. They're great because they keep you off the ground, which can get quite wet, and are also nice and level. And the campground itself is located in the center of the island, so it's a perfect location to get anywhere you need to go! Interestingly enough, in the fall, LLBean does a yearly photo shoot at the campground. I was lucky enough to see some of the action! It can be quite a spectacle sometimes though, and I had to leave that day, so I didn't stay very long. The showers are coin operated and it takes a little time for the water to warm up, so bring lots of quarters! Also, the floor in the bathhouse is not a solid plank floor - there are gaps between every floor board. It's not so bad until a cool breeze comes up when you are using the toilet. Also, I would lay a towel down on the floor when you are using the shower. I've seen kids walk around down there, and I'm not interested in teaching them human anatomy! LOL I've never had any problems with the service at the campground. But after I check in and register, I rarely have any interaction with the staff. They also rent kayaks and such there. I haven't done that yet, but it is definitely on my list of things to try. I've never used the WiFi either, mostly because I am looking to get away from all that when I come up to Maine. Some other interesting points: -My boyfriend woke up early one morning and saw a bald eagle. Seeing one of those in the wild really made his day! -If you go out on the dock after dark, you can see glow in the dark algae. You're not supposed to go out on the dock at night, but people do it anyway. read more

It is noteworthy that the few bad reviews have generally "take it or leave it" replies from the owners. I am happy that so many of you have had such a wonderful time -- bravo. We had a different experience. But for starters -- this place is like a cult. People have been coming here for as long as 50 years. They all know each other. They drive huge campers with inspirational messages on the sides and decorate their campsites with signs and flags. I am sure they bake pies and send each other holiday cards. They told us how this is their "home away from home" and how campsite number D3 or B12 or Red #2 whatever has been where they stayed as kids. Parents dress alike in matching browns, sandals, and low priced patagonia knockoffs. This is not what I would call a camp site. It is like an weird forest based elks club for extremely (extremely) white people from places I have never visited like Cairo, Illinois or Crestview, Michigan. Many people here have an LL Bean addiction. Wedid not see many tents that were not part of a family that also had a camper. I think that Airstream has a sales office here in the campsite. The showers by the way are filled with mosquitos. I have been to public showers in Armenia, Ukraine and the Congo and I would say these are neck and neck. There is just something about slimy soap covered plastic, abandoned shampoo bottles and cold water that makes me smile. The fire pits are small and allow for no air flow. So bring a bellows or, like 90% of the folks we saw, bring your own quad burner stove and 100 gallons of jet fuel. Next time we might bring our VIKING 25,000 BTU range just to fit in. We have been up to this area in Maine before and stayed in Black Woods at Acadia. It is quite a difference because at Black Woods people get out of their tents (because they are actually camping) and then leave the campgrounds to hike. The place is a ghost town during the day. At this campground people get out of their king size beds in their campers and make sausage, egg, bacon, grits, pancakes, and waffles for their first course. Walk down to the 'gathering place' (swingers anyone?) to overpay for a those famous bagels from Maine and chat with the Tom Smith, Sally Jones, Bill Wilson, Dr. Bob or Chip Davis. "What great foliage don't you think?" is a famous ice-breaker here. Going on -- the front desk people are icy cold. Even colder than the showers. The people checking in next to us said the same thing, as did someone we spoke to on the pier. Our campsite was fine-ish until our neighbors showed up at 8pm and proceeded to scream with their children until after 11pm. Asn they were so close there was no privacy. This was the case with many of the sites we saw. Thing is, at a real campsite, people set up during the day because you cannot pitch a tent at night. When you are traveling with your townhouse on a flatbed you can show up anytime, including 10p when others might be TRYING TO SLEEP. The noise was so unbearable that we did not sleep until midnight. They were playing guitars and more. By 11:30 pm I knew all about their family, their kids and their dogs. The next day we decided to leave early and I told the front desk ice-cube that we were leaving because of noise and she just sat there stone faced. If your idea of dinner is a big steak, long walks give you agita, Lipitor is your friend and you know how to bake Rhubarb pie, well, you have found your home away from home. Now go get those Mephisto walking shoes and come on down. Advice to management, work on your people skills. read more

What an incredible place. Stayed with my fiancé, but the magic of the camp ground had me wishing I'd spent my childhood summers growing up there. Camp sites are well Maintained and even though you see your neighbors, it feels like one big community rather than being over crowded. The cove is an imaginative kids dream where hey can jump off the dock, swim to an island and catch crabs. The perfect place to get them off their iPhones. We came here at the end of the summer season (first weekend in October) so it was nearly empty and the weather was perfect. We stayed at C12...great campsite! Had a view of the water and some flat rocks right below where you can nap! Bathrooms...more than we could have asked for! This is one of the tougher reviews I have had to write-because the place is very pretty. I had an amazing water-front site-but frankly the attitude I got from Donna (one of the owners) is enough from keeping me from going back. In short, I guess a lot of people had arrived around the same time as I did, so I was told to go look at a site and come back to check in. I dealt with a gentleman who was nice enough. So I found a site, then came back to register. I was told to then go put stuff at the site so someone didn't "take it". I asked if I could just pay so I wouldn't have to come back yet another time...frankly I felt like the system they have in place stinks. I realize often it's not that busy and maybe their current system works, but who wants to drive (or walk) up to office 3 times. Luckily when I was dealing with Donna, who was in my opinion rude and even inhospitable, the gentleman offered to go down and hold the spot while I filled out the form and paid. Later on I called about something on my cell, and got a really crass "cells don't work in the park come up if you need something". I was just trying to get the code for the wireless before they closed (it was Sunday). I had asked about wireless when I was checking in (on the first visit) but wasn't told what it was. Maybe I was an exception, but I was made to feel so uncomfortable by Donna that while I camp all the time, and always when I am visiting Acadia, I don't think I can come back here. If she was an employee I would say the owner should fire her, but she is one of the owners... I realize maybe some of it was me, maybe I should have just gone down and come back (for a 3rd time) but I also know terrible customer service when I see it as I have my own business and so I ask a lot of the people who work for me, and I am a tougher customer because of it. That said, the best way I can vote is with my wallet. I probably stayed another night and saw if she was in a better mood on the following day, but in the end I just decided that she is probably unhappy in her work and that's her life...and I don't need to be a part of it. It's too bad because it's a gorgeous place...and the rest of my vacation I have only dealt with the most pleasant people in Maine. Oh yeah, one thing I really didn't like was how noisy the place can be. Cars from the main road. Cars from the camp road-and at all hours. Oh and the birds will definitely wake you up if you camp by the shore. Overall, beautiful place, but mixed customer service and very, very loud is what I experienced. I think I am going to stick with camping at Seawall campground on the quiet side of the island... I posted this on Trip Advisor as well. I guess I would only add that sites are pretty darn close together-depending on the site. I didn't mind the camping on a platform-but who brings a hammer... I get the impression this place wants you to come back to the camp office 10 times a visit. I like to go once and be done with it. So it rained the entire time we were there, which unfortunately made this experience less than pleasant. Thankfully we were on the platform tent sites right by the water, which made for a slightly drier weekend. The views were absolutely gorgeous, and worth the trip in itself. This would probably be a great place to bring kayaks and slip right into the water from your campsite. The bathrooms and showers were also surprisingly clean, which was a nice plus. We came on Memorial Day weekend and while you would have thought it would have been super busy, apparently we were the only ones stupid enough to think that camping in a torrential downpour would not be that bad. That being said, I can't wait to come back when it's sunny. read more
