Not worth the money. This camping area is reaching the limits of their well. In lieu of potable water we were handled gallon jugs of distilled water. The bathrooms are similarly overwhelmed. If you wish to use them; avoid peak times. The electricity at site 43 was also in short supply--something we discovered after hours. This campground could be a cute spot, but it needs an infrastructure update first. read more

This campground was eh. It had running water and electricity as everyone else had said, but a majority of the sites were extremely close to the road, which was not a huge deal considering the road is a loop and only used for those who have to go into the campground/ have a home on the road. No other traffic should really be on there. BUT you do hear the traffic that is on it and see the headlights. Sites are very close to each other and not ever well hidden/ shaded. The bath houses were very clean and private rooms for showers and toilets. They had no camp store because "covid" so that in itself is a little frustrating. The water was nice but a little bit of a walk if you're on the other end of it. Few campsites looked like they were nicely spaced and shaded. So I'd recommend to really get on of those. Overall the campground itself is not too terrible. There's just a few key aspects that aren't achieved. read more

My family and I had a terrible experence. We had sight 3, 4, 5. Looking online it seemed like the sights had woods behind them. Load and behold its a privet home with no privacy in between. If you stay things you should expect expect: A bad aditude from morning shift. Ambulance showing up once a day. Having to call the Ambulance for family member triping and breaking there arm. While staf not caring and wanting you out. Have fun here read more

Beautiful spot right on the coast! We stayed at the Sunrise spot and were the only people at the campground which made it extremely peaceful. Friendly staff! There's a hose for water right at our site along with a nice fire pit and picnic table. Kayak rentals weren't open due to COVID but there's a nice dock right there to put in. Loved watching the lobsterman, birds, and sunsets! Can't wait to stay again. read more

I'm giving this campground 2 stars for one reason. New owners as of 2022 have jacked up the prices with absolutely nothing added to the campground. We have stayed here for a week in August for the last 2 years. We were very excited to book a 2 week stay this year. However, what was just under $400 for a tent site/week is now just over $600!! Needless to say, we are camping elsewhere. As many reviews state, the sites are close together, small, and with very little to no privacy. We were ok with that for the price. Sorry to say, we won't be back. read more

We picked this campground even though it was a little expensive because they had 30amp and water. Hookup. And it was still remote enough to be not in town. The grounds are on the side of the hill leading down from hall quarry rd. We camped at site 11A which was a little sloped front to back but it could be overcome with some blocks. The Somes Sound "beach" is what you'd expect, a rocky slope with a couple of docks. The pool at the office was clean and nicely temped in August. There was always a maintenance guy around taking care of things. Wood is $5/bundle and ice is $3/5Lb. There is fishing and a free paddle boat on the quarry itself but no swimming there. The bathrooms were clean and maintained every day but a hot shower is $1/5 minutes. Overall the campground was great as was Maine and MDI. The weather is fantastic, 70-80 during the day and 60s at night. Did not Need any AC. The only downside was having to taxi into Bar Harbor or into Somesville and pick up the bus because SSVC is about 0.8 miles off the bus route. I love that this campground had no apparent permanent campers. I have found that when that is the case the campground tends to be more run down. read more

Had an awesome time camping at SSVC. The location was excellent- easy to access both Acadia and Bass Harbor area. There is also a grocery store 5 minutes up the road which was convenient. We made sure to pick a site in the center of the campground NOT near the main road- our site name was "Maple." Our site came with water, electric, picnic table, and firepit. Due to COVID, purchasing ice and firewood was on an honor system, meaning that you just wrote in the book up front at the check-in cabin whenever you grabbed either of those items. These were tallied up and charged to the credit card on file at the end of our stay. We took a walk around the campground to explore and really enjoyed that there was access to the water- you can rent canoes/kayaks at the front desk as well. The bathhouse was a 2 minute walk from our campsite and was reasonably clean. Showers were free. Overall, we felt very safe camping here and the noise level was great- there were not any rowdy groups when we were here. read more

When we booked this site, the online pictures and website map clearly tell a different and decieving story to what you get when you arrive at Somes Sound View Campground. Our site, #11, was right next to #12 and #10. Basically right next to each other, with no separation. During COVID, this is completely unacceptable. The State of Maine should investigate this campsite as there is no social distancing ability with campers sloted like parking lots. The person who greeted us was pleasant, but not understanding. We attempted 4 times to contact the owner, Michael Musetti but he never responded back. Asking for a refund despite their no refund policy. Don't believe the good reviews as they are definitely planted false ones. Visit the site or do a Google satelite view to see the real representation. Shame on me for not doing more research. VERY DISAPPOINTED with the whole situation. read more

This is a well managed campsite. We stayed at "Maple" and found it to be terrific. Being there during high season in early August, the campgrounds were definitely crowded. While there was a lot of people, it wasn't to loud and we felt that we had privacy. Next time we definitely want to try to book way ahead to get a view of Somes Sound!!! So beautiful! read more

It seems that marketing has gotten ahead of operations here. HTR Resorts, the owner of this campground, bills their sites as "luxury" camping. Yes, they are near great locations (in this case, Acadia Nat'l Park), and the campsites themselves were nice spots and relatively spacious for large tents, screen rooms, and parking. The neighborhood was also pretty quiet. But for the average nightly $80 price we paid for a tent site, I would say that I've had similar great sites at awesome locations with FAR better bath house facilities for less than half that nightly price. Some inexpensive improvements in the bath house would go a long way (hooks, mirrors for each sink not just one, filled soap and paper towel dispensers, etc). Going beyond that, though, to match actuality with "luxury" marketing claims would be better! If you need ideas, some local competing campgrounds could give you ideas :) read more

There has been no hot water in the Women's showers for our entire stay. Apparently, upon talking to the management, it's been out for 9 days. Their solution is for women to use the Men's showers. I'm not really comfortable telling my 13 year old daughter she needs to use the Men's showers. I understand that plumbers are somethimes hard to find, but after 2-3 days it's inexcusable. Given how much we are paying, they needed to provide a better, more immediate solution. We will not come again. read more

This site is just ok. Pros: -Centrally located -Water and electric available -Shaded sites -Bathhouse -Proximity to Somes Sound. Cons: -Most sites are right next to the road -Low water pressure at sites -You pay $1 per "5" minutes of shower, it was more like 3 with 1 minute of almost hot water -The wood bundles are $5 and teeny bundles of fast burning wood. -Limited shop supplies -No dump station -The wifi is only available near the office I don't think I will be back to this site, just not worth the high price. read more

Quiet, beautiful campground. We enjoyed our stay in the starfish cabin very much. It had a lovely view across the sound and amazing stargazing at night. Bathhouse was clean and a short walk from the cabin. The campground was just 20 min from both bar harbor in one direction and bass harbor in the other direction. Would stay here again. read more

Stayed here for two nights in late June. Friendly employees, clean facilities. The first night we got a water view site. It was nice but not much of a view compared to the other sites since there was a fence obstructing the view of the water. It was a nice night camping at a reasonable price. The second night we paid an extra $20 for a water front site and it was money well spent. Saw Dolphins and seals about 50 feet from our tent and felt very secluded. Woke up to beautiful views. Worth it if you don't mind spending a couple extra bucks. read more

From my understanding there are new owners/management at Somes. The place was beautiful and I couldn't say enough good things. The bathrooms were the cleanest I've ever seen at a campground. We were at the anchor site with a waterfront view for the first week of June. We went on the provided kayaks and saw dolphins while we were in the waters! I have to say we lucked out because the weather was perfect and it was during their off season so we got all the attention from Roger the property management. 45 minutes into our arrival Roger visited our site to make sure we were settled and he would always stop his golf cart to make sure we were enjoying ourselves. Our car broke down (not that I minded because we got to stay longer) and Roger as well as the woman in the office helped us every bit of the way to get back on the road. From start to finish our experience was everything Bar Harbor should be and Somes Sound View Campground was a huge part in that. PS Roger, it ended being a throttle plate that needed to be cleaned. $30 later and we were back on the road. Thanks again! read more

It's not as bad as everyone says. We stayed at the Spruce site which is by the side of the road, but it was definitely "private" from other campers as I had requested. We heard a lot of traffic every morning/night but it is manageable. We felt a bit like we were not part of the campground though being on the outskirt but we didn't have to climb a steep hill every morning to leave the place so it was completely fine by me. Going to the bathhouse was a slight struggle in the middle of the night though. The site was big enough for one tent and every site has a water faucet. We did not have electricity but with the view of the quarry it was $40 a night + tax. The shower was clean with a bench area to leave your stuff. Plenty of space. Cold water showers are free if you can deal with the freezing water. You can return the unused tokens for cash if you don't use them up. The picnic area down by the Somes Sound was nice but we didn't get to spend too much time there. there's also kayak/canoe rental. read more

Reserved well in advance of our mid August Trip. My wife and I called to add our two adult sons to our Travel Trailer site (#49) a few weeks before hand and they told us "a tent would not fit and that we would have to reserve an additional site". We Got to the site and found it was huge! We saw other campers with two tents on their sites and more than 4 people. My sons had to wait an additional day to check into their site ( #4) which had a private residence abutting it!. My sons ended up camping on our site the entire time in their tents. SSVC charged us an additional $138 for the extra site that we did not use for the three days they were there. I asked where they Black and Gray water dump site was and they said they don't have one??? The people who own the place are thieves. Steer clear. read more

This campground is on the site of the old hall quarry. The large marble stones taken from the quarry line each campsite and firepit. Somes View has waterfront right on Somes sound, with its own dock and kayaks available for rentals. Waterfront sites are available, with gorgeous views (although not very private). Know that picking one of these requires a walk up a seriously long, steep hill to get to the bathroom. We tent camped in a waterview site. Private property abuts the campground, so we had a view of the sound, as well as someone's bedroom window. But overall I wasn't disapointed. Bathrooms were clean and nice, with token showers. Although we were in the midst of the monsoon of 2009, the campground has managed run off wonderfully. And we got a terrific deal for notoriously expensive mount desert island camping. So-so Good: Campsites have running water and electricity Bathrooms and showers are in good condition, better than average Nice view from their dock Not-so-good Campsites are small and very close together, with little or no bushes, etc. in between, meaning very little privacy Some campsites are just a few feet from the road - together with the small size of the campsites it can feel like people are driving right next to your site Staff/office only available from 8am - 8pm and they seem understaffed during the day. At 11 am the office closes so staff can clean bathrooms and check the sites. This means that the bathrooms are basically not cleaned from 8 pm to 11 am - by the morning the bathrooms can be pretty dirty, out of paper, etc. It also means that if issues arise during the night (when we were there someone locked the bathroom doors sometime during the night) there is no one to respond. read more

We stayed here pretty much just for a place to sleep...it was cheaper than a hotel. Nice view, clean token showers ($1 for 5 min of hot water), the platform was nice, cause it stormed and our tent only got moderately wet. You can't swim in the quarry and we didn't go down to the beach. Don't expect much from the WiFi, you have to stand next to the camp store. And like most camp stores buy your supplies before you get there. read more

Our trip was ruined by the incredibly rude groundskeeper who drove amongst the camp on his four wheeler all evening. Instead of coming and having a conversation with us about his concerns, he yelled at us from the road and threatened to kick us out without reimbursement due to our talking and laughing at 8 o'clock in the evening. On a holiday weekend. It was not our fault the campground piles their campsites right on top of each other so there is nowhere for the sound to disperse. I've never seen someone let so little power go to their head. read more

My husband and I recently stayed at Somes Sound View Campground and were very unhappy. Upon arriving at the campground, we noticed the campsites are extremely close together and anything BUT private. Our site abutted a fence and we could see every other camp site clear as day. At night we could hear the guy in the next campsite snoring. We could barely fit our Dodge Charger in the campsite and off the road. The bath house was dirty and smelled like mold. Like clockwork at 10PM not one site had a fire going let alone a lantern. It was like mom had told all the kids to go to bed. We reserved Friday through Monday but ended up forfeiting our reservation fee and getting a hotel in Bar Harbor first thing Saturday morning. read more

Great camp ground for the money! We were able to book last minute and were surprised at how pleasant the grounds were. The showers and bathrooms were very clean and well maintained. As others have said make sure you check the map to see which site you are booking. We were at Cedar which was nice, however some were on the road and other abutted a fence. Beware and read the fine print in their cancellation policy. Even with the death of my father, they wouldn't refund our reservation. They say that their business season is so short that they cannot afford refunds. They can refund this...we're taking our business elsewhere and telling everyone that we know.
