    BBQ Plate
    Nate H.

This is a pretty cool little place on Main Street in Marion. It is a stand alone with some outdoor seating, but it seems most people just grab to go or eat in their cars. They have a couple of different options: BBQ, Hot Dogs, Burgers, and other typical BBQ joint dishes. I went with the BBQ Plate, so that is what most of this review will pertain to. The BBQ Plate was around $8, if I remember correctly. It came with a big pile of pork BBQ, hushpuppies, fries, and slaw. The BBQ came presauced and they also included some individual packets of Texas Pete. The BBQ was kind of odd. I feel like some of these areas through the mountains don't stick to a traditional Eastern or Lexington style. The BBQ wasn't really chopped, minced, or pulled. It was just kind of just a pile of pork. Hard to explain. The sauce wasn't really much of anything. I guess I would describe it as tangy. No smokiness to speak of. The BBQ wasn't terrible. It just definitely isn't something I would go out of my way for. The fries were very good and crispy, and the slaw was alright. The hushpuppies were probably the worst part. They were so dry that I couldn't even finish off a whole one without drying out my whole mouth. We ended up getting some apple sticks and ice cream for dessert. The apple sticks were basically baked apples with fried battered around them. They were very good, especially with vanilla ice cream. The ice cream that they serve is the type that you got in the cafeteria as a kid. I'm talking about the kind in the little styrofoam tub with a wooden tab to eat it with. May have been the nostalgia, but it tasted really good. This hut shares a parking lot with a gas station, and if you want to use the bathroom, you'll have to use the gas station's (Hut's bathroom was out of order when we went). There are a couple of tables where you can eat beside the hut. The employees were friendly and this place has some local charm to it. The Bar-B-Que Hut is not something that I would go out of my way for, but if you are traveling through Marion, it is a better option than all of the chain fast food that is in the area. Also, I think that if I came back, I would opt for the burger. That seemed to be what most of the locals ordered.

Hush puppies, slaw, fries, pulled pork - no bun. Perfect vacation food...

Very good hush puppies and pulled pork. It is definitely a hut, so take out is necessary as there's no tables to sit and eat. It's worth the ride. Local people suggested here when we asked " Where do you go for barbecue?"

Very excited to try this place. Was definitely packed. Cars pull in, cars pull out. I peeked through the order window and there had to have been 40 burgers (hand formed) cooking on the grill at once. Service was quick and friendly, Yes, they do accept credit cards. The prices are very good, especially when there's a special. I only paid $5.50 for a large BBQ sandwich, fries and a drink. The sandwich comes with slaw and pickles on it. The barbeque was good, average to maybe a little better than average. What I didn't like was the giant super soft sesame seed bun it was served on. The crinkle cut fries were crispy and hot, just like I like them. The outside dining area was pretty grubby and could have used a good wipe down. As I was leaving I couldn't help thinking that maybe, based on the number of burgers cooking, that I should have gotten a burger...

Been coming here since I was a kid, good eats!

My daughter used to manage a German Restaurant, the owners being German immigrants, so she's pretty discerning when it comes to German food - let me tell you, she was absolutely blown away! She said hands down, all 3 items were the very best she's ever had. I opted for the Rueben, which, I was equally impressed with - the corned beef was tender, hardly any fat, and the dressing was to die for. Desert was equally as delicious, their Cheese cakes are nothing less than phenomenal - and lets just say their pasta salad and pimento cheese found its way home with us to enjoy with dinner that evening - amazing! I'd give them 100 starts if I could, a must stop if you're nearby - or worth driving if you're not. Can't wait until next year to come back!

We chose to split the Reuben since we have early dinner reservations and each got a side. Even at 1/2 the sandwich and side it was very filling. The sandwich was hot and delicious. The pasta salad was also very good. The desserts today was Banana Cake and Hawaiian Cake. I got a slice to go. Go for the good food and warm hospitality!

I stopped in my first day and got the LT sandwich, which was amazing, but I ended up spending almost as much time looking around the store as I did eating. They have everything from local mustards and honey to tinned fish, seasonings, and a whole section from a local creamery with ice cream, yogurt, smoothies, etc. Everything seems thoughtfully picked out and locally sourced when possible, without having the ridiculous prices you sometimes expect from a place like this. The staff was also amazing--genuinely friendly, helpful, and happy to talk about the food and everything they carry. I liked the place enough that, despite having an entire city of restaurants I'd never tried before, I came back the very next day. This time I got the grinder, which ended up being my favorite, along with the roast beef, which was also delicious. Between the sandwiches, the people, and the frankly ridiculous amount of good shit packed into the store, everything about this place was great. There are plenty of places I didn't get a chance to try while I was in Asheville, but I have absolutely no regrets using two lunches on this one. I'll definitely be back next time I'm in town. There is local artwork displayed on the walls as you enter. You place your order directly at the counter, take a number, and your food is brought out to your table when it is ready. The menu is quite large, and it took a bit of time to decide on my order, but I ultimately went with a combo including a half ham wrap, a drink, and a side of pasta salad. The cashier was very good about openly telling everyone in line about price differences from the printed menu before ordering. Because the kitchen was experiencing a significant delay, it seemed like they quietly upgraded me to a whole wrap as a nice peace offering! It came cut into two parts, with one part wrapped neatly in foil. Personally, I really wish they offered a "build your own" option where you could just choose your own specific bread, meat, cheese, and toppings, rather than having to hunt through the large preset menu options to find a combination where you like everything. I was really surprised by how incredibly small the side portion of pasta salad was--about the size of a standard salad dressing container! I've honestly never seen a side dish served that small before, so I posted a photo of the two side by side to show the exact comparison. Next time, I would skip the combo entirely and just order the sandwich on its own. The ham wrap itself was really good, and the small bite of pasta salad was very tasty. However, it did take quite a bit longer than it should have for the food to leave the kitchen, so this slow wait time could definitely be an issue for someone on a tight lunch schedule.
