The restaurant is situated off the beaten path in the business district, but it's impossible to miss with the huge smoker sitting out front. It's a small restaurant with just a few tables and the ordering situation is a bit wonky (just one small window to order and pickup from). The staff was ultra-friendly and the food came out quick. As for the food, it was just okay... The BBQ itself wasn't bad, but it was definitely precut and kept in warmers (this would give a pit master down in TX a myocardial infarction as this is a huge "no no"); the sides were actually really good though. The total was about $30 for lunch, which to me was a bit high based on the quality of the BBQ. Overall... Not bad, not great, but not certainly TX BBQ.

I ordered it one time when I didn't feel like having meat, and I was honestly surprised at how good it was. That said, when I am in the mood, I love their tri tip sandwich with the spicy barbecue sauce, and dipping it into their beans just takes it to another level. It's so good that way. I also love driving by and seeing the giant chicken on the roof. And if you see smoke coming from the place while you're on the freeway, you already know it's time to pull over and grab a tri tip sandwich. Definitely one of those spots that keeps you coming back.

The dishes used for the banchan with the lunch special still have a somewhat dated appearance, including some chipped pieces. Considering the relatively high price of the lunch special, I would think updating the presentation and serving ware would be worthwhile. The service, however, remains friendly and efficient. I ordered the bulgogi, and while it wasn't bad tasting, it didn't seem to be prepared properly. The meat texture was a bit mushy and onions had no caramelization, and the dish lacked the rich, savory flavor and texture that makes good bulgogi so enjoyable. It almost tasted as though it had been cooked at too low a temperature. Unfortunately, the banchan were also disappointing. They were very bland overall. The carrot in the potato-and-carrot dish had an odd taste that reminded me of cleaning solution, so I actually spit it out and didn't eat the rest. The kimchi portion was extremely small and, frankly, didn't look particularly appetizing, so I didn't try it. The radish was also very basic and lacked much flavor. The two wontons were unremarkable, although the radish soup was still good, as it usually is. The salad was fine as usual, and the mixed rice was tasty. Ultimately, though, when I'm paying around $23 before tax and tip for a lunch special and receiving such small portions and inconsistent food quality, I don't feel the meal represents a good value. I really wanted to give this place another chance because I enjoyed my earlier visits, but unfortunately, this most recent meal left me disappointed.

Super shareable and perfect as a starter. 10/10. The Cauliflower Tacos were a reminder that you absolutely do NOT need meat for a great taco. These were hearty and loaded with (again) incredible sauces. My friend was obsessed and I get why. They were good, but I would prefer a meat protein taco at a spot like this. 7/10 for me. Gunsmoke is located in Downtown Santa Paula. I didn't pay close attention but I don't believe they have private parking. If you don't know SP, there is street parking and some parking lots. I would be mindful when you are planning to come for parking. I came with a friend midday so there was plenty of parking and seats as well so we got seated right away. I was happy to see the non meat options they have available. I was a bit bummed out they didn't have their hummus but it's just another excuse for me to go back. I did end up getting their cauliflower tacos. My friend got their avocado fries and their devil eggs. I had never had devil eggs, and tried those and were so good. I wanted more but I had already had all my tacos. I did appreciate the owner coming to greet us and finding out I was pescatarian. He was nice, mentioned that even though they are a BBQ spot, they still want to value those customers that don't eat, and asked if there's anything I think of to let him know to see if they can add it to the menu. Really appreciated that. Overall, bummed out I wasn't able to try their BBQ. The options I did try were all really good. I would come back.
