There is also a beach park named in his honor in Fort Pierce. This rural part of unincorporated Southwest Miami-Dade is called the Hammocks and Sugarwood is one of the neighborhoods in the Hammocks. Sugarwood Park has a .3 mile lighted loop walking path, basketball courts, playground, benches, and tot lot. There is also a fitness court that features five pieces of easy to use, low impact gym equipment designed for cardio and strength training and even wheelchair workouts. Landscaping in the park includes butterfly attracting plants. This park is great recreational spot for families and people looking to exercise in South Miami.

There are 4 sets of swings--2 are regular swings and 2 other ones are chair-like for those who just want to sit back and recline. Parts of the playground have the blue rubber flooring and other parts are sand. There are no parking lots, but you can park along the street right by the park. Overall, this is a nice park to take a stroll, play some bball, or take kids on the playground.

The park features a skate park with ramps, basketball courts, outdoor fitness equipment, tennis courts, a sand volleyball court, soccer fields, and more. In 2024, the community center underwent a complete renovation and received a 3,000-square-foot expansion. Improvements included a new main hall, upgraded multipurpose rooms with technology, and a kitchenette with new appliances. Additional upgrades included a new roof, doors, windows, flooring, plumbing, lighting, utility systems, and walkways. The center now hosts numerous activities, including seasonal camps, after-school programs, youth basketball and soccer leagues, arts and cultural classes, and structured programs for youth and families throughout the year. In 2025, the playground was completely replaced with a whimsical nature-inspired play area featuring climbing structures, slides, swings, and interconnected walking paths. The park also added a fenced in splash pad, a new basketball court with energy-efficient sports lighting, and bleachers for spectators. The new playground looks loke so much fun. During my visit, I even saw adults relaxing in the netted area at the top of the climbing structure. My favorite feature of the park, however, was the network of walking paths. As i made my way through the park, I spotted numerous butterflies as well as chickens with their adorable chicks. I had an amazing afternoon at North Trail Park.

They also host a annual fire work show here on the fourth of July that is AMAZING! Tons of fun games, entertainment, Food trucks, and Fireworks. Its a must to come and check this out.

Plenty of leagues in the area use this park for their practices and events so if you're a soccer mom- you've likely ended up here. It's a nice spot to walk your dog when it's emptier in the early mornings or late evenings. The park also has parking which makes it a plus for those commuters. Most importantly, there's actually bathrooms which makes things a lot easier when you just gotta go. The area is in the nicer edge of SoMi so the neighborhood is definitely aesthetically pleasing. It's right in between Miller and Sunset on 67th Avenue so you can exit either road and be here in a heartbeat. Now, go enjoy those great outdoors.

I will be measuring distance around the whole loop again because I could have sworn it was right at 5 miles but I'm reading 4.2-4.5 instead so this calls for another bike ride tomorrow! Only reason I'm giving it 4 stars is because I had an uncomfortable experience one time with a huge group of cyclists. They weren't very nice to a group of my friends and I while we walked with our kiddos and strollers. I haven't been able to forget. But other than that I like coming here, especially later in the afternoons when the son isn't so terribly hot and you can get a nice breeze.

The path is usually pretty clear and people who ride it are pretty nice. Just make sure you are wearing bright or reflective clothing as sometimes cars tend to ride a little close to the edge of their lanes which could really ruin your day.

Learnt how the whole forest has an underground network of fungus. Might sound gross but it is fascinating! There are also this sink hole looking things called solutions that are super interesting to see and learn more about. The hammock is beautiful and you truly feel like you escaped Miami overall. The volunteers did some epic work on the butterfly garden. The bathrooms are clear and there are picnic tables all around. The nature center itself has a nice little exhibit to educate on birds, butterflies, snakes and the like. The staff is very friendly and helpful, and host several events throughout the month to educate and engage with the community. Archery lessons, evening walks, historic c bike rides and others. However, it's a tricky trail. It's not easy to walk because it's pure nature. There is a trail that goes all the way to the end and from there it's a matter of walking all the way back. It's not a circle like other places. Take comfortable shoes with you, and be ready to walk slow, specially in areas full of rocks and moss. Also, there are insects around, and some mosquitoes in a part of the way. Nothing out of this world but if that's a dealbreaker take it into account. // Hermoso, y sorprendente lugar para visitar en una mañana o tarde tranquila, ideal para un paseo lento entre la naturaleza, para apreciar su belleza, y una sutil sinfonía de sonidos entre los árboles, pájaros, ardillas... I love exploring natural areas and I saw a small sign for the R Hardy Matheson County Preserve off…read moreOld Cutler Road. There isn't a parking lot so I took a chance pulling off to the side of the road despite a number of no parking/ tow away signs. The nearest place I can find to park is approximately a mile away. As I was parking a number of other people with fishing gear also pulled over to park and headed to the preserve. The preserve is named in honor of Robert Hardy Matheson, a conservationist and former commissioner credited with helping create Biscayne National Park and MetroZoo. Matheson won his election to the county commission in 1964 by campaigning against an oil terminal in Biscayne Bay. With his support the site was instead turned into a federal park. His family donated the land for the county's first park, Matheson Hammock, and later for Crandon Park on Key Biscayne. Mr. Matheson passed away in 1993 at the age of 73. R. Hardy Matheson Preserve is 813 acres located east of Old Cutler Road. In 1982, the State of Florida purchased 640 acres that make up the majority of the preserve and entered into an agreement with Miami Dade County to manage it. The preserve is bordered by Biscayne Bay Aquatic Preserve to the east, Matheson Hammock Park and a housing development to the north, and the Snapper Creek Lakes residential subdivision, Snapper Creek Marina, and Four Fillies Farm to the west. The preserve contains a rustic hiking trail that takes you to Biscayne Bay. In the preserve is the remains of a prehistoric Tequesta Indian village dating to 500 BC. The site contains a midden, a kind of ancient garbage dump that can tell archaeologists a lot about the people who lived there, a village, and possibly a cemetery. Artifacts found in Snapper Creek include tools made from bones, pieces of broken pottery, and ax heads made out of conch shells. Today you might spot manatees swimming in the creek. The preserve is also home to a high diversity of rare ecosystems including pine rockland, mangrove, hardwood hammock and estuaries. Over 200 species of birds have been recorded here. Since 1910 the preserve has been covered with mounds of fill from the dredging of the Snapper Creek for navigation. Miami Fade County has restored large areas of the preserve and removed invasive plants. In 2012 volunteers from Wells Fargo grew red mangrove propagules and transplanted to the coastline of R Hardy Matheson County Preserve to give juvenile fish and crustaceans a habitat in which to grow. Currently, there are no developed recreational facilities at R Hardy Matheson County Preserve. An informal footpath spans the length of the maintenance berm along the canal. The path begins at the park entrance and runs along the north side of the canal to Biscayne Bay. There is also a graffiti covered cold war era bunker on the preserve. R Hardy Matheson County Preserve is not officially open to the public although people sometimes take the trail from Old Cutler Road and from Biscayne Bay to fish and sight see. In 2012 Miami Dade County developed a 10 year prospectus for the preserve which included making a parking lot, canoe launch, and picnic area. Unfortunately nothing was ever done and this area remains underutilized which is a shame because it has beautiful views of Biscayne Bay if you walk the trail all the way out.

Kendall Green Park and all of Kendall is named for Henry John Broughton Kendall (1840-1914),…read moredirector of the Florida Land and Mortgage Company which purchased the area that became Kendall in 1883. Henry moved to the area in the 1900's to manage the company land. Kendall Green Park is a greenway passive park. Greenways are green spaces that have been closed to motorized vehicles in order to provide people a safe place to travel and exercise. With no cars, they are typically a great place to engage in movement while enjoying the outdoors and nature. They are also an ideal place in urban areas to spot wildlife. Kendall Green Park is less crowded that the larger parks in the area with more amenities. The main draw to this park is the paved walkway that runs along the perimeter of a scenic lake that attracts wading birds, ducks, and iguanas. At the entrance to the park is a butterfly garden. The parks open space is ideal for picnics, relaxation, and outdoor exercise on the walking path which provides a nice setting for a stroll or jog.
