I had visited Baon Kainan a couple of years ago and they had a limited breakfast menu. So it had been on my radar to return and try more of their menu. Showed up for a very late lunch at their Alberta location. Stepped up and ordered: Palabok-Rice noodles, seafood sauce, ground pork, sautéed shrimp, pork crackling, fried garlic. First, I should have added an egg for $1. This was a little more bland than traditional palabok. Noodles were also a little thicker than I like. Its good, but I do favor the more traditional palabok. Adobong Gulay-Green beans and fried tofu in a tamari and vinegar sauce. My sister had been hoping for the Kare Kare, but they were sold out, so she opted for the Adobong Gulay. I tried a bite and found it tasty. Lumpia-Good lumpia. Says it has longanisa sausage as a filling, but it wasn't the usually strong longanisa taste. Ube Bibingka-ube flavored rice cake, toasted coconut. Not as heavy as a traditional bibingka. It was fluffier (reminded me of marshmallows). And I ate every bite. I felt it was more like a pork plate with the calamansi and mayonnaise flavor. It was a miss for me. The palabok was delicious. For some reason, just for fun, I was searching for JOLLIBEE, because of their Fried Chicken (on which I've not tasted), but Filipinos raved about it. On my search, it showed up Baon Kainan, and we're just 9 mins. from there, so we turned around and was able to park out front. Our order was taken right away. We were also able to find a large table for hubby and I. The food was served in a unique way. They had the Adobo Chicken and sauce, in a separate container to which rice could be added as you wish. The Adobo was very tender and delicious! (I add his Bok Choy with my leftover, but he tasted it. No worries, he's a picky eater, he won't eat them at home, either!) For the first time, I had the Kare Kare with Rice. (No way will I try Filipino food with fries!) Kare Kare had that peanut sauce, which was good, but it was something I've had to dip Egg Roll Salad. Traditional it's not, but that's probably a good thing as Filipino seems to rank near the bottom of Asian food popularity. That is, their offerings should draw-in more who are unfamiliar with the cuisine. It was hit and miss. I didn't connect with their version of Adobo, the staple of Filipino cuisine, we didn't finish it. I guess with this dish I'm a purist at heart. And while I've never been a fan of Sinigang, I definitely didn't care for it here. Conversely, the Kari Kari fries were awesome. Those fries plain would have been satisfying. An ample portion dish for cold weather. It includes a small side of what seems to be fish paste. Likewise, the Ube Bibingke was mouth watering wonderful. So it's a worthy cart, the drawbacks were more personal rather than uniform. That is, they have earned glowing reviews. I love my Filipino food but I love supporting these local businesses even more! We were lucky to find them open until 8PM on a weekday so when the kare kare craving hit we were SO GLAD to find it on their menu. We came close to closing so not a long wait but glad to check them out in their new space near Concourse Coffee. We were able to chat with the owners as well and they were so kind! For this first visit we tried almost half of their menu with the kare kare (with a side of garlic rice instead of fries), palabok, longanisa lumpia, and calamansi cider. The kare kare was traditional but with a kick from the peppers. The meat was super tender and there was plenty of sauce to go around the side of garlic fried rice. As for the palabok they use thin noodles and their sauce had plenty of crunch - yum! My favorite though had to be the longanisa lumpia because who doesn't like longanisa OR lumpia. Since it was a cold night the calamansi cider was a nice option and it was a nice flavor combination that kept me wanting to sip on it more. read more

Kare kare fries (peanut butter beef stew)?! Don't worry they didn't forget the bagoong side (fermented shrimp). The fries was light and krispy. Not your Mickey D's fries either. It was delightful. Kare Kare is one of those ideal and unique Filipino taste that surprises most non-Asian tasters. Normally eaten with white rice, this twist is a nice way to be introduced to Filipino flavors. We finally made it here on a gorgeous sunny Fall day. The food was everything I hoped it would be. They have created a unique fusion of flavors starting with traditional Filipino favorites. Finally got to try this place and we can't wait to return! Their kare kare fries are perfect and will you keep you warm even on the coldest day despite no rice and just French fries!! I visited with my girlfriend for a Sunday brunch after a bunch of friends recommended this cart, and I'm glad we came! It's pretty clear to see why this cart was awarded one of the top food carts in PDX. We ordered the Tosilog, but with eggplant instead of the pork belly. I've never had Tosilog before, and I would've gotten the pork belly version if I were alone, but after I tried the eggplant, I would dare say that it'd be almost impossible for the pork belly version to have been better. The eggplant is lighted coated and then deep fried to perfection, resulting in a crunchy exterior and a very light and fluffy interior. I'm not even an eggplant person, but I loved it here! The garlic rice was also cooked perfectly, and I found that there was just the right amount of garlic in it. The two sunny-side up eggs added creaminess once the yolks were broken, as they slowly oozed over the rice sitting below. The onions and cherry tomatoes gave a slight smokiness from hitting the flattop, as well as some needed acidity to cut through the other savory flavors. The way the dish was executed, I can't help but think that it was the perfect representation of Filipino cuisine - an exciting combination of salty, savory, and acidic. We also ordered the Ube Bibingka for dessert, and it was amazing! The cake is extremely light, with the ube flavor coming through for a perfect amount of sweetness. And the coconut crumble topping gave some crunch and textural contrast. Would absolutely order this again. There wasn't a line to order when we came, but we did have to wait about 15 minutes to get our food. The cart is a 2-person operation, so be patient. They're super nice too, and I loved that we were able to chat it up with them a bit while we were waiting. There's only outdoor dining here, as there's 2 long wooden tables that serve the patrons for all of the food carts in this pod. There are some parts of the tables that're covered by umbrellas to shield you from the heat, but I didn't mind getting some sun while eating. Pricing is reasonable given the amount and quality of food that you get. It'd be tough to find anything cheaper, and I know that it's already tough to find good Filipino food to begin with. There's tons of street parking around that's free - we didn't have any trouble when we came. If I remember correctly, there's a 2-hour parking time limit, but not sure how enforced that is. Absolutely love this cart! Show them as much love and support as possible, because they deserve it! Whenever we visit PDX again, we'll definitely come back. read more

Came here on a family dinner. Easy to order, very clean location. Customer service was friendly and chill. I ordered the signature Chicken Adobo over rice. The chicken was grilled and braised in a soy-vinegar broth. The meat was tender and fell off the bone. The chef is obviously very well trained and takes his craft seriously. My wife ordered the Vegan sisig. It was the first time she tried calamansi, and she loved her dish. Very flavorful and very beautifully presented. The more Filipino food in Seattle, the better! Baon is a pop-up that is hosted out of Ben Paris and their food is DELICIOUS. We first tried them back in August and ordered their salmon singang and chicken adobo. But this is not your mom's cooking! The salmon in the sinigang was lightly smoked. Everything was so well balanced and the smoky flavor didn't overpower the soup. The bok choy in the adobo was fermented (surprise!) which worked so well with the vinegary tang of the dish. Our orders were 3-course meals and we got Shanghai lumpia and a cucumber tomato salad on the side. Bibingka (sweet rice cake) was for dessert! We're from Seattle and this place was definitely worth the drive. This place leveled up every Filipino dish I've ever had growing up. The adobo fried chicken tasted like crispy pasta. The acidity in the pancit bihon was well balanced with the infused ground pork. Ending my meal with the ube bibingka and honey butter was like a #ratatouille moment. And to top it off their customer service was exceptional. I was there right before they closed and they had run out of most of their food so to make it up they gave us free dessert and their last pancit bihon which they were probably planning to eat for lunch at the end of a very long and tiring shift. We feel so fortunate to have Baon Kainan nearby. We have been following these folks since they have done a couple killer pops up at Matta a few months back. Now we can have their food any time! Boan Kainan does have a small but SOLID menu! The main dishes are excellent. Tender braised beef kare kare fries is like a better version of poutine. The chicken adobo is among the best I've had with a thick tangy gravy. The lone vegetarian option is a mushroom and jackfruit sisig - it's unique and stands on its own, though - it doesn't feel like an afterthought (comes with a perfect soft boiled egg too). Calamansi tea is great on a hot day and Filipino spaghetti is good too, with a hearty meat sauce and sausage. I've had other Filipino spaghettis that were too sweet for my taste but this one is not. All this food is very filling but we've had it twice in one weekend now so you know it's good. Save room for dessert, too - The bibingka is really great.
