Fried chicken $33
Scott F.

3% credit card fee. Bring cash. Food: 4.5/5: The fried chicken $33 is good but over-hyped. It's all white meat. Ask for the sauce on the side; it starts to get soggy the instant the sauce goes on. That sauce has a hot kick to it, and it might be too much for some people. 4.2: margherita pizza $21. Good but the crust was kinda meh. Drinks: 4.5: The Tempranillo red wine $14 was good: Izadi, Rioja, Spain. 4.4: Green M&M cocktail $18 was nice: Mezcal, montenegro, green chartreuse, lime, simple. Served on the rocks. refreshing.

Super friendly staff and nice ambience for a date night! We came for my husbands birthday dinner and ordered the popular fried chicken entree and a pistachio and fig pizza. The pizza was my favorite because it was so unique! I loved the flavors and it was served super hot which I loved. The only thing I noticed was that both dishes felt a little bit over salted. We left feeling super thirsty.

Endive "salad"

Driving thru Santa Cruz we decided to pick up an order to go. This Endive salad for $18.00 was so disappointing! I did ask for dressing and blue cheese on the side but this doesn't seem right.

Herby cucumbers

Funky cool place for good food and drinks. I found this place through recommendation and really glad I came. Industrial space vibe with open windows and side lot parking. Pizza was crisp and meaty. Spicy suppressata with honey had a bit of a kick with sweetness. The herby cucumbers were refreshing with a huge crunch. Service was pleasant and friendly at the bar. I'd definitely come back here again. Enjoy!

Margarita pizza with rocket

Amazing pizza using local, organic ingredients. Super attentive service too. We arrived shortly after opening and we were lucky to get the last available table. We had two margarita pizzas, one with rocket and a side order of cucumbers. Plenty for three adults and a hungry kid. I highly recommend!

Soppressata

Had such a stellar experience at Bantam this evening! From the warm service to DELICIOUS food and wine, I highly recommend if you're in Santa Cruz! We're visiting from LA for a few days and this place is definitely on par with LA standards for GOOD food. We ordered the caesar salad, pickled cauliflower, fried chicken & soppressata pizza, as well as a bottle of Chianti. Highly recommend all of the above and wish we could stomach dessert! The staff were all extremely sweet and personable and we can't wait to come back next time we're in town!

Summary: Best restaurant on the West Side, gets crowded and loud, no reservations, fresh rotating menu Details: There aren't many high-quality restaurants in Santa Cruz, especially on the West Side. It's Bantam and... not sure. They don't take reservations and there isn't a lot of parking. On Fri and Sat, come right at 5pm or wait until 8pm. If it's a nice night, buy a drink from the to-go register at the bar and sit on the benches by Verve. The menu changes frequently but some items are almost always on it. Yes, it's a pizza restaurant but it's also American/Italian. Don't worry - I've never had a bad dish. Some highlights... House-made bread: Dense and crusty, as it should be. Served with salted butter. Get it even if you're getting pizza. Carrot soup: Labeled spicy but only a little kick. The yogurt added a good balance, and the crispy rice gave it a nice crunch. Didn't look like much but it was excellent. Avocado and beets salad: Another surprise. Chunks of beets and beet puree. Olives and almonds. Yum. Can I have another? Prosciutto pie: pizza as it is supposed to be. Thin crust, wood fired, and slightly charred. No tomato sauce. Mozzarella and Reggiano. I'm still dreaming about this. ... If you don't finish it, add an egg and eat it for breakfast. Bacon pizza: not for the faint of heart or the regular pepperoni chain lovers. The flavors of bacon and nectarine and jalapenos. Didn't think I could eat it all. Didn't have any left. Almond cake: holy third surprise! Paired with house made ice cream (small complaint, we wanted a second scoop). Not too sweet and a perfect way to end our meal. The bartender made us a killer marg and an ever-popular old fashion. The wine list is small but good choices at reasonable prices. There's japanese whiskey, if that's your thing. On our most recent visit, our server Spencer was friendly and knowledgeable. Bantam is top notch. No reason to travel to SF; it's right here on the West Side.

Great place to eat and hang. Minus 1 star for the pizza being delicious but the crust is too soggy/floppy so the toppings slide off.

How long is the wait typically, on a weeknight?

It can take a long time...up to an hour. We stopped going there since the last 2 times my husband (a person of color), had to wait for a table while others who came after us were given a table before us. We just couldn't take it anymore. Good luck… Read more

What had enticed us to go to VIM was the creativity of the menu. There were combinations I hadn't seen before and it seemed that the chef was bouncing around the globe choosing ingredients to combine. The result? Every bite is a sensation in your mouth! Different spices, flavors and textures combined to make you slow down and savor the experience. We shared a salad and two entrees (pork and filet) and tried to make sure we saved room for dessert since I had read that the owner was master. Every dish we had we enjoyed from the first bite to the last! And the desserts? Holy smokes! The chef is known for the chocolate cake (which was divine and very rich) but the cheesecake was another level! It was like eating creamy clouds of deliciousness. The service was spectacular! In a world where customer service is sometimes hard to come by, VIM knocks it out of the park. Our waiter, Cole, was incredibly knowledgeable, personable and attentive. I have read a couple reviews knocking the ambiance or configuration of the restaurant . There are limited tables and a lot of space between them. The ceilings are high, also giving a lot of space to the restaurant. It definitely has a different feel, but what it does is allow is for you to talk to and actually hear your dinner companions!! That is nearly unheard of in restaurants now, where they are optimizing every square space by cramming tables so close to each other that you can barely hear yourself think. I appreciated that as an additional part of the wonderful dining experience. You are best to get a reservation. There is a bar that I believe takes walk-ins, but when we got there at 6:30 it was full. We will definitely be coming back!

The food was delicious, great flavors and unique combinations that excite the palette, the watermelon was a big highlight for me. This will not be my last visit, I look forward to coming back hungry for more!

The food was genuinely good. I had the skirt steak, my wife had the greens and farro salad, and…read moreboth were excellent. Our server, Aya, took great care of us -- she's not the reason for this review. The problem arrived with the check: a $5.18 line item labeled "SVC Fee" that didn't appear on the menu or the table. When I asked about it, our server said there was nothing she could do. I asked to speak with a manager. Without an introduction or any salutation whatsoever, Shannon just launched right into a rationalization that "a lot of restaurants are doing this now" and explained that processing fees cost the restaurant $7,000-$10,000 a month, that they've been adding the surcharge "for a few months," and that "no one has batted an eye." She offered a $10 gift certificate (which I declined) and agreed she'd "explore" adding the fee to the menu (it's not presently on their website either). She said she doesn't want customers to be "confused" like I was. No, I wasn't not confused about anything. It isn't the $5.18. It's the principle, and the law. California's SB 478 (Civil Code § 1770(a)(29)) requires advertised prices to include all mandatory fees. SB 1524 carves out restaurants -- but only if those fees are "clearly and conspicuously displayed, with an explanation of [their] purpose," on any advertisement, menu, or other display containing the price. That disclosure requirement has been in effect since July 1, 2024. As of July 1, 2025, the disclosure must also meet the heightened formatting standard in Civil Code § 1791(u): larger or contrasting type, set off from surrounding text. The receipt labels the charge "SVC Fee." But a service charge is squarely a mandatory fee subject to SB 1524's disclosure regime. And even taking management's verbal characterization at face value -- that it's a credit card processing surcharge rather than a service charge -- a cryptic three-letter abbreviation appearing for the first time on the check satisfies neither "clearly and conspicuously displayed" nor "explanation of its purpose". Disclosing a mandatory charge for the first time on the receipt isn't compliance, and it certainly isn't transparency (as Shannon characterized it). It's statutorily noncompliant billing -- "no one batting an eye" notwithstanding.

Needed more windows or something, and a clearer vision for the decor and experience. You ordered at a front counter that felt like a you were in an impromptu kitchen. It is super nice to have a tasty spot that is open later on the westside, where most restaurants close promptly at 8 or 9. And the pizza was delicious! Really solid 4 pieces of Detroit style with tasty toppings and fun options. We for the "almost maui," but it was cool to see how many vergitarian options there where. Looking forward to trying more! They had a lager on tap, which was pretty exciting given their limited options and the IPA heavy focus in this town (). The owner was really nice and came over to see how we liked the beer and food. I see some people complaining about the price, but Detroit style pizza is really filling! Two pieces is a whole dinner, and at $12.50 (most average $25 a pie here) it is hard to find a cheaper dinner in town. The board game vibe was unpretentious and fun, and what it might lack in decor it makes up for in its other charms! A cute spot!
