Visited the drive thru at Bantam Chef in Chesnee, S.C. This place has been in this location since the 1950's so I've been told. It looks like a museum as much as it does a restaurant. Every trip here for me is like stepping into a time tunnel! The food is good; sometimes really good. Giving in to my lust for hotdogs, I pulled in line and waited my turn to order. The entire process went acceptably fast. When I put my brown paper bag in my truck; the chili aroma was fantastic! I couldn't wait to get home. These hotdogs were four star solid! I wasn't let down! FIRST TIME CUSTOMER! Beware of dishonest cashiers, that purposely give dishonest answers to food inquiries. Came in one hour before closing, to get a bite to eat. I chose their BBQ Sandwich, only after asking whether or not if the BBQ was store bought or fresh cooked or smoked there. The cashier quickly responded that it was smoked out back. Immediately after taking the first bite, I realized that a lie had been told; because the meat was tasteless. Also it was a very, very, tiny $5 BBQ Sandwich, to say the least. I thought this was going to be a neat place to eat. When you walk in you order first to the left pick up on the right. a bit confusing when it is your first time there. I wish I had read some of the reviews. There was a Rib eye special, the girl said it was around 7oz. It had to be maybe at the most 3-4 oz. It was super thin. I wanted Rare and it was so over done. I left most of it, I just couldn't finish. The baked potato was ok and the side salad just lettuce, a couple pieces of tomatoes and lots of cheese. They don't carry blue cheese dressing (FYI) There were a abundance of flies in the kitchen as we watched them cook. The place was not too clean, alittle older dated interior. I know this wasn't a 5 star restaurant but I was hoping it would be pretty good. The hole in the wall type of place. The decor was 50's and I liked seeing the old cars and Elvis statue. It's a shame the food was not up to par but you live and learn, we certainly will not go back this was not a great dining experience. Ordered 4 milk shakes and a tender meal. Waited for an hour straight to finally get my milkshakes and food. When I received it my fries were room temp or colder weren't even lukewarm. Tenders were okay but the wait isn't even remotely worth the food quality. They were not backed up i want to make that very clear there were around 4 other people that were waiting on their food. My friend said he talked to a man that was waiting for an hour and a half and still was waiting. Milkshake was 100% impossible to get through the straw I had to use a silver spoon because it had the same texture as a tub that had been sitting in the freezer for a day. If i could rate this a 0 I really would the guy running the deep fryers was moving almost comedically slow. I don't know if it was a seriously bad day for the restaurant or what but I will not be going back. If you are in any hurry whatsoever please do yourself a solid and do not go here. The employees look like they're moving in slow motion. When we finally got the food, my food services burger was thin but undercooked. Ish - I stopped by this place once before passing through town and I thought it was a cool throw back from days gone by but it's about food, service and customer service. The order process is like the old style cafes, go up to the counter and order the food and then wait. The food was acceptable and the service was only at the counter so if you need refills or or something else you do it yourself. I wasn't impressed with the taste but then again you're not paying a bunch for it. Also, the coffee area was not in a good condition and I wasn't a fan of their open availability of the coffee mugs, many of them were very dirty and so was the prep area The inside is decorated with memorabilia from multiple eras and they have a ton of military memorabilia but they don't offer a military discount for service. When I asked if they support a military discount I got a harsh look from the lady at the counter. I'm not upset they don't offer it but the feedback I get when I ask for it. read more

You gotta go there once, or twice, or may be a few times just because of the decor. A great 50s style diner. A part of the diner has an old 50s studebaker in there. Licence plates adorn the side boards and cheesy witty posters all over. The food itself isn't remarkable but it's an homage to the 50s style. I had a roast beef melt with curly fries and an orange fanta malted milkshake. 12$ for all of this. For us non locals, it's worth taking kids there just to have them walk into a bygone era. read more

Very dirty. Building is run down and you can tell they don't spend money on it. Dust everywhere. The staff is rude and the older lady that runs the drive thru is not friendly at all. Drive thru lines take forever we were in line 30 min. Chesnee wouldn't be the same without Bantam Chef. Excellent home town feel, always friendly faces, and the little "museum" like area is lots of fun to look at. I've been coming here for over ten years and have never had a less than pleasant experience here. The biscuits made from scratch are DELICIOUS! We were looking for local flair on a drive through South Carolina and boy did we find it! In a tiny town called Chesnee is a tiny diner called Bantam Chef. This is the type of place where the employees all have two first names like "Marie Sue" or "Emma Jane" and a thick deep south drawl. The ladies in front of us actually had a conversation about whether the one had remembered her teeth! No kidding!! They have a pretty big menu of typical diner fare but it is all really CHEAP. $3 for a bacon cheeseburger with all the fixins'. $2 for a heap of fries or onion rings. Milkshakes and ice cream. I must say the my burger was actually great as were the fries. The onions rings were the big, crispy kind and would have been delicious too if they hadn't been overcooked. My boy got a kids meal which came in the cutest paper car which he loved so much we brought it home. The place was pretty filthy. As we opened the door I remembered that smoking is allowing in South Carolina restaurants. As a nonsmoker in Florida I'm spoiled that I can dine smoke-free anywhere. The place stunk of stale cigarette smoke but after being in it for 10 minutes you didn't notice it as much. The floor looked like it hadn't been mopped in weeks. There were black and white checkered tiles but they looked were more like grey and black. The ladies room was so nasty we changed my toddler's diaper in the car. Even the grunge and grime of the place somehow seemed to fit. There was a big crowd at lunchtime so I'm sure it attracts business from quite a distance. I can only review the drive-through, since I haven't had the chance yet to venture inside. My bf has family in Chesnee, and we were there recently for a wedding. We pass the Bantam Chef, whenever we're in town, and I always get a chuckle from the giant rooster, car rear end, Capt. America and other 50's memorabilia on the roof and building. With cousin D's house right down the road, and no one wanting to cook, we made the Bantam Chef's big, delicious biscuits our choice two mornings in a row. These are real, Southern biscuits done right: no lead dough balls or barely held together dried crumbs here. The biscuits are moist yet fluffy and light with a mild, flaky, buttery flavor. I had mine with bacon and egg. The portion of bacon was very generous. The country ham biscuit was well-laden with salty, meaty goodness as well. Our cousin opted for a local specialty, Liver Mush. It's a patty made from pig liver, other parts, spices and corn meal. It's apparently got lots of flavor, and is a real "comfort food" for Carolinians. If you're in the area, definitely give the Bantam Chef a try, for the atmosphere and for the food! read more

I don't get the hype of this diner. Nearly everything about it is just below average. It's run down, the staff seems nonexistent, and the food doesn't live up to its reputation. It ain't horribly expensive or anything, but the food is just not really good. I had a "large bacon cheeseburger" with fries. These fries were average. And think of the burger like this; a skimpy, small and dry frozen patty with bacon and Velveeta cheese. The place is stuck in the past, although not in a very good way. There was sticky floors, poor maintenance, etc. Maybe it's that I went late at night. Staff seemed just merely there, like they hate their job. And we didn't get lids with our cups. There is some really rad 1950s decor and a couple of arcade games, but that's about the only saving grace. I did like the room full of classic cars. While the exterior may look inviting, you simply can't judge a book by its cover. I honestly wouldn't come here again as the food was pretty forgettable. After sitting in the same spot in the drive thru for about 15 minutes I left my spot to go inside and see what was taking so long to find not one person inside of the restaurant. Out of curiosity I sat there and called the store twice and watched as all of the employees just walked by the phone while it was ringing off the hook. While randomly driving through Chesnee, SC Geocaching my family stumbled across this little gem. We initially were excited by the giant metal Captain America on top and then lured in by all of the other crazy decor. The atmosphere is very kitschy and classic at the same time. You kind of have to visit here to experience it. I don't want to oversell it, but it reminds me of the back country diner version of the House on the Rock. The selection is crazy (this place has one of the most expansive menus I have ever seen) and the food comes out fairly quickly for how insanely busy the place seems to be. Seriously, I've been here three or four times and there has always been a massive crowd. Still, things seem to run fairly efficiently. Controlled chaos and all of that. The food is good. Not great, but good and definitely enhanced by the atmosphere (which remains the key selling point here). Personally, I like the food here a bit better than the Beacon in Spartanburg (which is another place where the experience is the key selling point). This is definitely worth making a short day trip of if you're looking for something unique. It has solid food and the appeal of an old time roadside tourist trap. read more

While I was asking if we could get fresh food the lady was very rude and did give us some hot fries, a bowl of mp microwaved in front of me and didn't apologize for any of it all the while others were bringing their plates back with cold food , things left off and terrible. We had flights to catch @ Spartanburg/Greenville airport and left everything on the plates . We go out lots of places as a family with 4 adults / 4 kids and rarely do we have this type of experience. We googled restaurants near our location and The Bantam Chef came up and even though it had a 3.6 star review we took a chance and will know better next time . They even do an array of breakfast foods, including livermush! The service is friendly but not always the fastest. The atmosphere is great, right out of the 1950s almost, with Elvis, Marilyn, Studebakers and many other decor accents. Good prices. Easy parking. My husband had a hamburger snd the burger was very thin. He wasn't impressed. I had a ribeye, tossed salad, baked potato and rolls. The food was served on a metal tray. Was not very appetizing in the metal tray. The salad consisted of lots of lettuce, lots of shredded cheese, large pieces of tomato and diced onion. The steak was ok and fairly big.
